The non-Abelian Chern-Simons path integral on $M=\Sigma \times S^1$ in the torus gauge: a review

In the present paper we review the main results of a series of recent papers on the non-Abelian Chern-Simons path integral on $M=\Sigma \times S^1$ in the so-called "torus gauge". More precisely, we study the torus gauge fixed version of the Chern-Simons path integral expressions $Z(\Sigma \times S^1,L)$ associated to $G$ and $k \in N$ where $\Sigma$ is a compact, connected, oriented surface, $L$ is a framed, colored link in $\Sigma \times S^1$, and $G$ is a simple, simply-connected, compact Lie group. We demonstrate that the torus gauge approach allows a rather quick explicit evaluation of $Z(\Sigma \times S^1,L)$. Moreover, we verify in several special cases that the explicit values obtained for $Z(\Sigma \times S^1,L)$ agree with the values of the corresponding Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant. Finally, we sketch three different approaches for obtaining a rigorous realization of the torus gauge fixed CS path integral. It remains to be seen whether also for general $L$ the explicit values obtained for $Z(\Sigma \times S^1,L)$ agree with those of the corresponding Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant. If this is indeed the case then this could lead to progress towards the solution of several open questions in Quantum Topology.

Torus Knots and the Chern-Simons path integral: a rigorous treatment

In 1993 Rosso and Jones computed for every simple, complex Lie algebra g_C and every colored torus knot in S^3 the value of the corresponding U_q(g_C)-quantum invariant by using the machinery of quantum groups. In the present paper we derive a S^2 x S^1-analogue of the Rosso-Jones formula (for colored torus ribbon knots) directly from a rigorous realization of the corresponding (gauge fixed) Chern-Simons path integral. In order to compare the explicit expressions obtained for torus knots in S^2 x S^1 with those for torus knots in S^3 one can perform a suitable surgery operation. By doing so we verify that the original Rosso-Jones formula is indeed recovered for every g_C.

Infinite Dimensional Analysis and the Chern-Simons Path Integral

Using the framework of White Noise Analysis we give a rigorous implementation of the gauge fixed Chern-Simons path integral associated to an arbitrary simple simply-connected compact structure group G and a simple class of (ribbon) links in the base manifold M= S2xS1.

From simplicial Chern-Simons theory to the shadow invariant I

This is the first of a series of papers in which we introduce and study a rigorous "simplicial" realization of the non-Abelian Chern-Simons path integral for manifolds M of the form M = Sigma x S1 and arbitrary simply-connected compact structure groups G. More precisely, we introduce, for general links L in M, a rigorous simplicial version WLO_{rig}(L) of the corresponding Wilson loop observable WLO(L) in the so-called "torus gauge" by Blau and Thompson (Nucl. Phys. B408(2):345-390, 1993). For a simple class of links L we then evaluate WLO_{rig}(L) explicitly in a non-perturbative way, finding agreement with Turaev's shadow invariant |L|.

From simplicial Chern-Simons theory to the shadow invariant II

This is the second of a series of papers in which we introduce and study a rigorous "simplicial" realization of the non-Abelian Chern-Simons path integral for manifolds M of the form M = Sigma x S1 and arbitrary simply-connected compact structure groups G.

Chern-Simons theory and the quantum Racah formula

We generalize several results on Chern-Simons models on Sigma x S1 in the so-called "torus gauge" which were obtained in arXiv:math-ph/0507040 to the case of general (simply-connected simple compact) structure groups and general link colorings. In particular, we give a non-perturbative evaluation of the Wilson loop observables corresponding to a special class of simple but non-trivial links and show that their values are given by Turaev's shadow invariant. As a byproduct we obtain a heuristic path integral derivation of the quantum Racah formula.

An analytic Approach to Turaev's Shadow Invariant

In the present paper we extend the "torus gauge fixing approach" by Blau and Thompson (Nucl. Phys. B408(1):345--390, 1993) for Chern-Simons models with base manifolds M of the form M= \Sigma x S^1 in a suitable way. We arrive at a heuristic path integral formula for the Wilson loop observables associated to general links in M. We then show that the right-hand side of this formula can be evaluated explicitly in a non-perturbative way and that this evaluation naturally leads to the face models in terms of which Turaev's shadow invariant is defined.
