Exploring $\widetilde{R}_2$ Leptoquarks and Majorana Neutrinos via same-sign dimuons at the HL-LHC

We study the phenomenology of scalar leptoquark (sLQ) $\widetilde{R}_2$ coupled to right-handed neutrinos (RHNs) at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), focusing on signatures that depart from those targeted by conventional sLQ searches at the LHC. If sLQ is heavier than the RHN, for $\mathcal{O}(1)$ Yukawa, the decay of sLQ to RHN and jet can dominate, leading to distinctive final states that are only weakly constrained by existing analysis. We consider the same sign dimuon and multi-jet signature. This is particularly a unique and clean lepton-number violating signature, benefiting from low Standard Model backgrounds and directly sensitive to the Majorana nature of the RHN. A comprehensive analysis is performed by combining the sLQ pair and single production mechanisms at $\sqrt{s}=14~\text{TeV}$, allowing us to assess the sensitivity reach of HL-LHC over a wide range of sLQ masses and Yukawa couplings. We demonstrate that pair production dominates the sensitivity at the TeV scale, while single production becomes increasingly important for multi-TeV sLQ masses, enabling the HL-LHC to probe regions of parameter space beyond the reach of current direct and indirect constraints. Our results highlight the strong complementarity between production modes and emphasize the unique capability of the HL-LHC to test sLQ scenarios involving RHNs. The framework presented here provides a well-motivated target for future experimental searches and offers a pathway toward simultaneously probing sLQ dynamics and parameter space of a Majorana RHN.

Exploring Scalar Leptoquarks at Muon Collider via Indirect Signatures and Right-Handed Neutrino-Assisted Decays

Scalar leptoquarks (sLQs) appear in a wide range of ultraviolet-motivated extensions of the Standard Model and provide a natural link between the quark and lepton sectors. In this work, we investigate the discovery potential of an sLQ doublet $\widetilde{R}_2(\mathbf{3},\mathbf{2},1/6)$ that couples to light quarks and right-handed neutrinos (RHNs) at the proposed muon collider. We analyze both indirect probes arising from $t$-channel sLQ exchange that affects the high-$p_T$ behavior of dijet spectra and direct searches exploiting pair and single production of the sLQs, incorporating the full interplay of kinematic thresholds and decay topologies. We find that indirect probes at muon colliders deliver remarkably robust sensitivity to the sLQ-quark-muon coupling over a broad mass range. Assuming a sub-$\mathcal{O}(1)$ Yukawa coupling, we achieve a $5\sigma$ sensitivity up to sLQ masses $\sim 4.0$ TeV ($7.0$ TeV) at $\sqrt{s}=5$ (10) TeV center-of-mass energy with $\mathcal{L}=3~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ ($10~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$) integrated luminosity. Direct production channels provide complementary reach: pair production dominates below threshold, while single production, driven by the sLQ-quark-muon/RHN interaction, decisively extends the mass reach well into the multi-TeV regime. We demonstrate that with $\mathcal{O}(1)$ Yukawa couplings, the single production channel can probe sLQ masses up to $3.0$ TeV ($6.0$ TeV) for $\sqrt{s}=5$ TeV ($10$ TeV). Together, these channels enable a unified exploration of parameter space far beyond the projected capabilities of the HL-LHC, including regions where conventional charged-lepton signatures are subdominant.

TooLQit: Leptoquark Models and Limits

We introduce the leptoquark (LQ) toolkit, TooLQit, which includes leading-order FeynRules models for all types of LQs and a Python-based calculator, named CaLQ, to test if a set of parameter points are allowed by the LHC dilepton searches. The models include electroweak gauge interactions of the LQs and follow a set of intuitive notations. Currently, CaLQ can calculate the LHC limits on LQ ($S_1$ and $U_1$) couplings (one or more simultaneously) for any mass between $1$ and $5$ TeV using a $\chi^2$ method. In this manual for TooLQit, we describe the FeynRules models and discuss the techniques used in CaLQ. We outline the workflow to check parameter spaces of LQ models with an example. We show some illustrative scans for one- and multi-coupling scenarios for the $U_1$ vector LQ. The TooLQit code is available at https://github.com/rsrchtsm/TooLQit

Boosted top quark inspired leptoquark searches at the muon collider

The proposed muon collider presents a promising avenue to explore various classes of beyond the Standard Model (BSM) particles. In this paper, we investigate the discovery prospects of the scalar leptoquark (LQ) $S_1$ at a muon collider. We consider two benchmark center-of-mass (C.O.M.) energy scenarios: 5 TeV and 10 TeV. We assume that the LQ decays into a top quark and a muon. The collider analysis for an LQ decaying into a top quark is distinct from that of lighter quarks. A TeV-scale LQ decaying into a top quark can produce an exotic, boosted fat-jet signature. In addition to the usual searches based on pair production of LQs, we also examine the single production mode, which depends on the $S_1 t \mu$ coupling. We demonstrate that systematically combining the pair and single production modes significantly enhances the discovery potential of the LQ at the muon collider. Our signal topology includes at least one hadronically decaying top fat-jet and two oppositely charged muons, thereby enabling the incorporation of the single production mode. We show that even with single production alone, it is possible to probe LQs as heavy as 4.5 TeV (9.0 TeV) in the 5 TeV (10 TeV) C.O.M. scenario for $\mathcal{O}(1)$ couplings.

Vector leptoquark contributions to lepton dipole moments

Leptoquarks (LQs) can contribute to the magnetic and electric dipole moments of charged leptons, which the current experiments have measured with good accuracy. We revisit the parameter spaces of TeV-scale vector LQs that contribute to these observables and study how these models fare against the LHC bounds. We show that significant portions of the parameter space are excluded when the current LHC data is utilised effectively. We find that only $U_1$ and $V_2$ can explain the observed positive shift in $(a_\mu^{\rm exp} - a_\mu^{\rm SM})$ through a lepton chirality-flipping contribution with $\mathcal O(1)$ LQ-quark-lepton coupling. We also see how these two LQs can fit the electron dipole moment and atomic parity violation measurements. We find that the current electric dipole moment measurements of the muon cannot restrain the LQ-quark-lepton couplings within perturbative regions.

Fresh look at the LHC limits on scalar leptoquarks

The scalar-leptoquark (sLQ) parameter space is well explored experimentally. The direct pair production searches at the LHC have excluded light sLQs almost model agnostically, and the high-$p_{\rm T}$ dilepton tail data have put strong bounds on the leptoquark-quark-lepton Yukawa couplings for a wide range of sLQ masses. However, these do not show the complete picture. Previously, Mandal \emph{et al.} [Single productions of colored particles at the LHC: An example with scalar leptoquarks, \href{https://doi.org/10.1007/JHEP07(2015)028}{J. High Energy Phys. 07 (2015) 028}] showed how the dilepton-dijet data from the pair production searches could give strong limits on these couplings. This was possible by including the single-production contribution to the dilepton-dijet signal. In this paper, we take a fresh look at the LHC limits on all sLQs by following the same principle and combine all significant contributions -- from pair and single productions, $t$-channel sLQ exchange and its interference with the Standard Model background -- to the $\mu\mu jj$ final state and recast the limits. We notice that the sLQ exchange and its interference with the background processes play significant roles in the limits. The $\mu\mu jj$-recast limits are comparable to or, in some cases, significantly better than the currently known limits (from high-$p_{\rm T}$ dilepton data and direct searches), i.e., the LHC data rules out more parameter space than what is considered in the current literature. For the first time, we also show how including the QED processes can noticeably improve the sLQ mass exclusion limits from the QCD-only limits.

Right-handed neutrino pair production via second-generation leptoquarks

No direct experimental constraints exist on Leptoquark (LQ) couplings with quarks and right-handed neutrinos (RHNs). If a LQ dominantly couples to RHNs, it can leave unique signatures at the LHC. The RHNs can be produced copiously from LQ decays as long as they are lighter than the LQs. LQ-induced RHN production has never been searched for in experiments. This channel can act as a simultaneous probe for RHNs and LQs that dominantly couple to RHNs. In this paper, we consider all possible charge-$2/3$ and $1/3$ scalar and vector LQs that dominantly couple to second-generation quarks and RHN. We study the pair and single productions of TeV-scale LQs and their subsequent decay to sub-TeV RHNs, realised in the inverse seesaw framework. We also consider RHN pair production through a $t$-channel LQ exchange. The single LQ production and $t$-channel contributions can be significant for large LQ-RHN-quark couplings. We systematically combine events from these processes leading to a pair of RHNs plus jets to study the prospects of LQ-assisted RHN pair production. We analyse the monolepton and opposite-sign dilepton final states and estimate the discovery reach at the high-luminosity LHC.

Leptoquark-assisted Singlet-mediated Di-Higgs Production at the LHC

At the LHC, the gluon-initiated processes are considered to be the primary source of di-Higgs production. However, in the presence of a new resonance, the light-quark initiated processes can also contribute significantly. In this paper, we look at the di-Higgs production mediated by a new singlet scalar. The singlet is produced in both quark-antiquark and gluon fusion processes through loops involving a scalar leptoquark and right-handed neutrinos. With benchmark parameters inspired from the recent resonant di-Higgs searches by the ATLAS collaboration, we examine the prospects of such a resonance in the TeV-range at the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) in the $b\bar{b} \tau^{+}\tau^{-}$ mode with a multivariate analysis. We obtain the $5\sigma$ and $2\sigma$ contours and find that a significant part of the parameter space is within the reach of the HL-LHC.

Combined explanation of $W$-mass, muon $g-2$, $R_{K^{(*)}}$ and $R_{D^{(*)}}$ anomalies in a singlet-triplet scalar leptoquark model

In addition to the long-standing anomalies seen in the muon $g-2$, $R_{K^{(*)}}$, and $R_{D^{(*)}}$ observables by various independent experiments, the CDF Collaboration has found another significant one in the $W$-boson mass. These anomalies might be intertwined at a fundamental level and have a single new-physics explanation. In this paper, we present a simultaneous solution to these anomalies with two scalar leptoquarks of roughly equal mass -- one weak-singlet $S_1$ and the other a weak-triplet $S_3$ -- which mix through a Higgs portal. The solution has only a few new couplings and TeV-scale leptoquarks, making the solution testable at the LHC. We put a lower and upper bound on the leptoquark masses in this setup from the current LHC data and the assumption that all new couplings are within the perturbative limit.

Precise LHC limits on the $\rm{U}_1$ leptoquark parameter space

A TeV scale leptoquark (LQ) is one of the promising explanations of the recent anomalies in the semileptonic decays of $B$ mesons. Among the various LQs, the vector $\rm{U}_1$ is capable of explaining the anomalies in both $R_{D^{(*)}}$ and $R_{K^{(*)}}$ observables. We use the current LHC data to put bounds on the parameter space of $\rm{U}_1$ relevant for the anomalies. Precise bounds are drawn by recasting the latest $\tau\tau$ and $\mu\mu$ searches by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. We find that it is imperative to include the resonant production modes for obtaining limits in the low mass regions. For higher mass points, the non-resonant production modes play a dominant role.

Improving third-generation leptoquark searches with combined signals and boosted top

Search strategies for the third-generation leptoquarks (LQs) are distinct from other LQ searches, especially when they decay to a top quark and a $\tau$ lepton. We investigate the cases of all TeV-scale scalar and vector LQs that decay to either a top-tau pair (charge-$1/3$ and $5/3$ LQs) or a top-neutrino pair (charge-$2/3$ LQs). One can then use the boosted top (which can be tagged efficiently using jet-substructure techniques) and high-$p_{\rm T}$ $\tau$ leptons to search for these LQs. We consider two search channels with either one or two taus along with at least one hadronically decaying boosted top quark. We estimate the high luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) search prospects of these LQs by considering both symmetric and asymmetric pair and single production processes. Our selection criteria are optimised to retain events from both pair and single production processes. The combined signal has better prospects than the traditional searches. We include new three-body single production processes to enhance the single production contributions to the combined signal. We identify the interference effect that appears in the dominant single production channel of charge-$1/3$ scalar LQ ($S^{1/3}$). This interference is constructive if $S^{1/3}$ is weak-triplet and destructive, for a singlet one. As a result, their LHC prospects differ appreciably.

LHC Bounds on $R_{D^{(*)}}$ motivated Leptoquark Models

Most of the popular explanations of the observed anomalies in the semileptonic $B$-meson decays involve TeV scale Leptoquarks (LQs). Among the various possible LQ models, two particular LQs -- $S_{1}(3, 1, 1/3)$ and $U_{1}(3, 1, 2/3)$ seem to be most promising. Here, we use current LHC data to constrain the $S_{1}(3, 1, 1/3)$ and $U_{1}(3, 1, 2/3)$ parameter spaces relevant for the $R_{D^{(*)}}$ observables. We recast the latest ATLAS $\tau\tau$ resonance search data to obtain new exclusion limits. For this purpose, we consider both resonant (pair and single productions) and non-resonant ($t$-channel LQ exchange) productions of these LQs at the LHC. For the limits, the most dominant contribution comes from the (destructive) interference of the non-resonant production with Standard Model backgrounds. The combined contribution from the pair and inclusive single production processes is less prominent but non-negligible. The limits we get are independent and competitive to other known bounds. For both the models, we set limits on $R_{D^{(*)}}$ motivated couplings.

Precise limits on the charge-$2/3$ $U_1$ vector leptoquark

The $U_1$ leptoquark is known to be a suitable candidate for explaining the semileptonic $B$-decay anomalies. We derive precise limits on its parameter space relevant for the anomalies from the current LHC high-$p_{\rm T}$ dilepton data. We consider an exhaustive list of possible $B$-anomalies-motivated simple scenarios with one or two new couplings that can also be used as templates for obtaining bounds on more complicated scenarios. To obtain precise limits, we systematically consider all possible $U_1$ production processes that can contribute to the dilepton searches, including the resonant pair and single productions, nonresonant $t$-channel $U_1$ exchange, as well as its large interference with the Standard Model background. We demonstrate how the inclusion of resonant production contributions in the dilepton signal can lead to appreciably improved exclusion limits. We point out new search channels of $U_1$ that can act as unique tests of the flavour-motivated models. The template scenarios can also be used for future $U_1$ searches at the LHC. We compare the LHC limits with other relevant flavour bounds and find that a TeV-scale $U_1$ can accommodate both $R_{D^{(*)}}$ and $R_{K^{(*)}}$ anomalies while satisfying all the bounds.

Boosting vector leptoquark searches with boosted tops

At the LHC, a TeV-scale leptoquark (LQ) that decays dominantly to a top quark ($t$) and a light charged lepton ($\ell=e,\mu$) would form a resonance system of \emph{boosted-$t$ $+$ high-$p_{\rm T}$-$\ell$}. We consider all possible vector LQ models within the Buchm\"{u}ller-R\"{u}ckl-Wyler classifications with the desired decay. We propose simple phenomenological Lagrangians that are suitable for bottom-up/experimental studies and, at the same time, can cover the relevant parameter spaces of these models. In this simplified framework, we study the pair and single production channels of vector LQs at the LHC. Interestingly, we find that, like the pair production, the cross sections of some single production processes also depend on the parameter $\kappa$ that appears in the gluon-vector LQ coupling. We adopt a search strategy of selecting events with at least one boosted hadronic top quark and exactly two high-$p_{\rm T}$ leptons of the same flavor and opposite sign. This combines events from the pair and single production processes and, therefore, can enhance the discovery potential beyond that of the pair-production-only searches. For $5\sigma$ discovery we find that vector LQs can be probed up to $2.55$ TeV for $100\%$ branching ratio in the $t\ell $ decay mode and $\mathcal{O}(1)$ new couplings at the $14$ TeV LHC with $3$ ab$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity.

Enhancing Scalar Productions with Leptoquarks at the LHC

The Standard Model (SM), when extended with a leptoquark (LQ) and right-handed neutrinos, can have interesting new implications for Higgs physics. We show that sterile neutrinos can induce a boost to the down-type quark Yukawa interactions through a diagonal coupling associated with the quarks and a scalar LQ of electromagnetic charge $1/3$. The relative change is moderately larger in the case of the first two generations of quarks, as they have vanishingly small Yukawa couplings in the SM. The enhancement in the couplings would also lead to a non-negligible contribution from the quark fusion process to the production of the 125 GeV Higgs scalar in the SM, though the gluon fusion always dominates. However, this may not be true for a general scalar. As an example, we consider a scenario with a SM-gauge-singlet scalar $\phi$ where an $\mathcal O(1)$ coupling between $\phi$ and the LQ is allowed. The $\phi q \bar{q}$ Yukawa couplings can be generated radiatively only through a loop of LQ and sterile neutrinos. Here, the quark fusion process can have a significant cross section, especially for a light $\phi$. It can even supersede the normally dominant gluon fusion process for a moderate to large value of the LQ mass. This model can be tested/constrained at the high luminosity run of the LHC through a potentially large branching fraction of the scalar to two jets.
