Remarks on the disproof of the unit distance conjecture

We present a short, digested, human-verified version of the recent OpenAI-generated counterexample to the Erdős unit distance conjecture, and a sequence of reflections on it. The argument relies crucially on ideas that may, at least in retrospect, be attributed to Ellenberg-Venkatesh, Golod-Shafarevich, and Hajir-Maire-Ramakrishna.

Geometry-of-numbers methods over global fields II: Coregular representations

We develop geometry-of-numbers methods to count orbits in coregular vector spaces having bounded invariants over any global field. We apply these techniques to bound the average ranks and determine average Selmer group sizes of elliptic curves and Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves over any base global field $F$ of characteristic not $2$, $3$ or $5$.

Geometry-of-numbers methods over global fields I: Prehomogeneous vector spaces

We develop geometry-of-numbers methods to count orbits in prehomogeneous vector spaces having bounded invariants over any global field. As our primary example, we apply these techniques to determine, for any base global field $F$, the density of discriminants of field extensions of degree at most 5 over $F$.

Counting number fields of fixed degree by their smallest defining polynomial

When do two irreducible polynomials with integer coefficients define the same number field? One can define an action of $\mathrm{GL}_2 \times \mathrm{GL}_1$ on the space of polynomials of degree $n$ so that for any two polynomials $f$ and $g$ in the same orbit, the roots of $f$ may be expressed as rational linear transformations of the roots of $g$; thus, they generate the same field. In this article, we show that almost all polynomials of degree $n$ with size at most $X$ can only define the same number field as another polynomial of degree $n$ with size at most $X$ if they lie in the same orbit for this group action. (Here we measure the size of polynomials by the greatest absolute value of their coefficients.) This improves on work of Bhargava, Shankar, and Wang, who proved a similar statement for a positive proportion of polynomials. Using this result, we prove that the number of degree $n$ fields such that the smallest polynomial defining the field has size at most $X$ is asymptotic to a constant times $X^{n+1}$ as long as $n\geq 3$. For $n = 2$, we obtain a precise asymptotic of the form $\frac{27}{π^2} X^2$.

Finiteness theorems for some representations of $\mathrm{GL}_3$

Let $n \geq 2$ be an integer and let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$. We prove that the set of ternary $n$-ic forms with coefficients in $\mathcal{O}_K$ and fixed nonzero discriminant, breaks up into finitely many $\mathrm{GL}_3(\mathcal{O}_K)$-orbits. This generalizes a result of Birch--Merriman in the binary forms case. We also prove a similar finiteness result on the $\mathrm{GL}_3(\mathcal{O}_K)$-orbits of the 27-dimensional representation of $\mathrm{GL}_3$ with highest weight $(4, 2)$.

Secondary terms in the counting functions of quartic fields

We prove that the smoothed counting function of the set of quartic fields, satisfying any finite set of local conditions, can be written as a linear combination of $X,X^{5/6}\log X,X^{5/6}$, upto an error term of $O(X^{13/16+o(1)})$. For certain sets of local conditions, namely, those cutting out ``$S_4$-families'' of quartic fields, we explicitly determine the leading constants of the secondary terms. We moreover express these constants in terms of secondary mass formulas associated to families of quartic fields

Secondary terms in the counting functions of quartic fields II

We determine the smoothed counts of $S_4$-quartic fields with bounded discriminant, satisfying any finite specified set of local conditions, as the sum of two main terms with a power saving error term. We also prove an analogous result for quartic rings (weighted by the number of cubic resolvents), deducing as a consequence that the Shintani zeta functions associated to the prehomogeneous vector space $\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathrm{Sym}^2(\mathbb{C}^3)$ have at most a simple pole at $s=5/6$.

The second moment of the size of the $2$-class group of monogenized cubic fields

We prove that when totally real (resp., complex) monogenized cubic number fields are ordered by height, the second moment of the size of the $2$-class group is at most $3$ (resp., at most $6$). In the totally real case, we further prove that the second moment of the size of the narrow $2$-class group is at most $9$. This result gives further evidence in support of the general observation, first made in work of Bhargava--Hanke--Shankar and recently formalized into a set of heuristics in work of Siad--Venkatesh, that monogenicity has an altering effect on class group distributions. All of the upper bounds we obtain are tight, conditional on tail estimates.

Malle's Conjecture for Galois octic fields over $\mathbb Q$

We compute the asymptotic number of octic number fields whose Galois groups over $\mathbb Q$ are isomorphic to $D_4$, the symmetries of a square, when ordering such fields by their absolute discriminants. In particular, we verify the strong form of Malle's conjecture for such octic $D_4$-fields and obtain the constant of proportionality. Our result answers the question of whether a positive proportion of Galois octic extensions of $\mathbb Q$ have non-abelian Galois group in the negative. We further demonstrate that the constant of proportionality satisfies the Malle--Bhargava principle of being a product of local masses, despite the fact that this principle does {\em not} hold for discriminants of quartic $D_4$-fields. This is the first instance of asymptotics being recovered for a non-concentrated family of number fields of Galois group neither abelian nor symmetric. Previously, this was only known for abelian fields, degree-$n$ $S_n$-fields for $n=3,4,5$, and degree-$6$ $S_3$-fields.

Counting integral points on symmetric varieties with applications to arithmetic statistics

In this article, we combine Bhargava's geometry-of-numbers methods with the dynamical point-counting methods of Eskin--McMullen and Benoist--Oh to develop a new technique for counting integral points on symmetric varieties lying within fundamental domains for coregular representations. As applications, we study the distribution of the $2$-torsion subgroup of the class group in thin families of cubic number fields, as well as the distribution of the $2$-Selmer groups in thin families of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. For example, our results suggest that the existence of a generator of the ring of integers with small norm has an increasing effect on the average size of the $2$-torsion subgroup of the class group, relative to the Cohen--Lenstra predictions.

Secondary terms in the first moment of $|{\rm Sel}_2(E)|$

We prove the existence of secondary terms of order $X^{3/4}$, with power saving error terms, in the counting functions of $|{\rm Sel}_2(E)|$, the 2-Selmer group of E, for elliptic curves E having height bounded by X. This is the first improvement on the error term of $o(X^{5/6})$, proved by Bhargava--Shankar, where the primary term of order $X^{5/6}$ for this counting function was obtained.

Geometry-of-numbers methods in the cusp

In this article, we develop new methods for counting integral orbits having bounded invariants that lie inside the cusps of fundamental domains for coregular representations. We illustrate these methods for a representation of cardinal interest in number theory, namely that of the split orthogonal group acting on the space of quadratic forms.

On the asymptotics of cubic fields ordered by general invariants

In this article, we introduce a class of invariants of cubic fields termed generalized discriminants. We then obtain asymptotics for the families of cubic fields ordered by these invariants. In addition, we determine which of these families satisfy the Malle--Bhargava heuristic.

Non-trivial bounds on 2, 3, 4, and 5-torsion in class groups of number fields, conditional on standard $L$-function conjectures

We prove new conditional bounds on the the $m$-torsion of class groups of number fields of any fixed degree, for $m=2$, $3$, $4$, and $5$. Our methods first recast the problem in the language of class groups of Galois modules, which allows us to relate these torsion subgroups to Selmer groups of elliptic curves. We then obtain a global estimate using the refined BSD conjecture, in a similar way to how one normally uses the Brauer-Siegel bound. Our methods are potentially very general, but rely on the existence of motives with very special $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$-cohomology. In particular, the restriction to $m=2$, $3$, $4$, and $5$ stems from needing an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ with $m$-torsion subgroup isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}\oplusμ_m$.

Exceptional jumps of Picard ranks of reductions of K3 surfaces over number fields

Given a K3 surface $X$ over a number field $K$ with potentially good reduction everywhere, we prove that the set of primes of $K$ where the geometric Picard rank jumps is infinite. As a corollary, we prove that either $X_{\overline{K}}$ has infinitely many rational curves or $X$ has infinitely many unirational specializations. Our result on Picard ranks is a special case of more general results on exceptional classes for K3 type motives associated to GSpin Shimura varieties. These general results have several other applications. For instance, we prove that an abelian surface over a number field $K$ with potentially good reduction everywhere is isogenous to a product of elliptic curves modulo infinitely many primes of $K$.
