Nanocircuits in loop structures: continuous waves preclude gauge invariant wavelengths

Tunnel junctions for quantum computing require discrete spectra from continuous waves on a doubly connected coordinate or loop. For an electron on a metal ring discrete spectra follow from discontinuous Bloch waves. Can both propositions be true? We find using a gauge function originating in the Lagrangian that continuity on a ring or loop violates gauge invariance of the de Broglie wavelength. This same gauge function shows that Lagrangians for the electron on a ring and the charge on a junction are mutual transforms. Thus persistent current on a metal ring and the Coulomb blockade on a tunnel junction seem to be the same dynamical theory based on discontinuous Bloch waves on the compact perimeter of a circle

Quantum Mechanics on a Ring: Continuity versus Gauge Invariance

Remarkably we find that for a ring with linear boundary conditions such that the eigenvector and its derivative are continuous, there does not seem to be a way for the well-known de Broglie relation to be gauge invariant. Certain nonlinear boundary conditions assure gauge invariance, and lead to eigenfunctions with a discontinuous but differentiable phase and a continuous spectrum. A discrete subset of this spectrum forms a Hilbert space, while another subset is excluded by the nonlinear boundaries. We conclude that discontinuous momentum eigenfunctions are tenable, and that it is possible that quantum mechanics can have nonlinear boundary conditions in some circumstances.

Nonlinear Boundaries in Quantum Mechanics

Based on empirical evidence, quantum systems appear to be strictly linear and gauge invariant. This work uses concise mathematics to show that quantum eigenvalue equations on a one dimensional ring can either be gauge invariant or have a linear boundary condition, but not both. Further analysis shows that non-linear boundaries for the ring restore gauge invariance but lead unexpectedly to eigenfunctions with a continuous eigenvalue spectrum, a discreet subset of which forms a Hilbert space with energy bands. This Hilbert space maintains the principle of superposition of eigenfunctions despite the nonlinearity. The momentum operator remains Hermitian. If physical reality requires gauge invariance, it would appear that quantum mechanics should incorporate these nonlinear boundary conditions.

Re-Thinking Schroedinger Boundary Conditions: the Simple Rotator is Not Simple

A contradiction arises when applying standard boundary conditions to a simple quantum rotator with a single coordinate. New boundary conditions for the Schroedinger equation are proposed that involve only gauge invariant quantities, and that can be applied beyond the immediate problem. The use of gauge invariant boundary conditions has important consequence for energy flow in or out of a simple rotator.
