Ansatz for the Jahn-Teller triplet instability

A threefold degenerate electronic state is Jahn-Teller unstable with respect to symmetry lowering distortions, which transform as the five quadrupolar modes. The solution of the corresponding vibronic Hamiltonian is constructed using the analytical method introduced by Bargmann, as an alternative to existing group-theoretical methods based on coefficients of fractional parentage. It involves the construction of an Ansatz which incorporates SO(5) to SO(3) symmetry breaking. The resulting Jahn-Teller equations are derived, and solved in terms of radial polynomials and Gegenbauer functions.

On excited state reaction path in reversibly switchable fluorescent proteins

A set formed by five reversibly-switchable fluorescent proteins (RSFPs) display spread over 40~nm in absorption maxima and only 18~nm in emission. The five proteins -- Dronpa, rsFastLime, rsKame, Padron(anionic form) and bsDronpa -- carry exactly the same chromophore and differ just in a few mutations. Thus they form an ideal set for mechanistic investigation. Starting with the results of molecular dynamics simulations we use QM/MM calculations to investigate the effects controlling the spectral tuning . In this contribution we show that the models, which are based on CASPT2//CASSCF level of QM theory, reproduce the observed absorption trend with only a limited blue-shift of 4.5 kcal/mol and emission trend with even smaller blue-shift of 1.5 kcal/mol. Using CASSCF QM/MM calculations we analyze the chromophore's charge-transfer patterns during the absorption and emission, which, in turn trigger a cascade of hydrogen-bond-network rearrangements indicating a preparation to an isomerization event. We also show how the contribution of individual aminoacids to the chromophore conformational changes correlates with spectral tuning of the absorption and emission. Furthermore, we identify how the conical intersection topography correlates with protein's photophysical properties. In conclusion, we establish a detailed mechanistic explanation of variations in photo-switching speed as well as higher sensitivity of RSFPs to mutation observed for light absorption relative to light emission.

The Quantization of the Rabi Hamiltonian

The Bargmann-Fock representation of the Rabi Hamiltonian is expressed by a system of two coupled first-order differential equations in the complex field, which may be rewritten in a canonical form under the Birkhoff transformation. The transformation gives rise to leapfrog recurrence relations, from which the eigenvalues and eigenvectors could be obtained. The interesting feature of this approach is that it generates integer quantum numbers, which relate the solutions to the Juddian baselines. The relationship with Braak's integrability claim [PRL 107, 100401 (2011)] is discussed

Methyne Capping in the Boron Buckyball : A Viable Possibility

We report the electronic structure of methyne boron buckyballs B68(CH)12 and B72(CH)8 obtained by substituting respectively 12 and 8 boron cap atoms by methyne CH groups on the boron buckyball B80. DFT calculations and minimization techniques have been employed to characterize the structural and electronic properties of endo and exo isomers of these molecules in Th symmetry. A vibrational frequencies analysis predicts that only endo-B72(CH)8 corresponds to a true minimum on the potential energy hypersurface with a cohesive energy similar to the boron buckyball. The viable existence of this carboron buckyball opens new perspectives for a synthesis of large boron clusters.

Chemical Bonding in the Boron Buckyball

A symmetry analysis of the valence shell in the boron buckyball B80, shows a perfect match with the symmetry of the valence shell in C60 .The cap atoms participate in the bonding by 30 orbitals which transform as the sigma bonds along the 6-6 edges. Far reaching consequences for chemical and physical properties of B80, which until now only exists in silico, are expected.

The Boron Buckyball has an Unexpected Th Symmetry

The boron buckyball avoids the high symmetry icosahedral cage structure. The previously reported Ih symmetric structure is not an energy minimum in the potential energy surface and exhibits a spontaneous symmetry breaking to yield a puckered cage with a rare Th symmetry. The HOMO-LUMO gap is twice as large as the reported value and amounts to 1.94 eV at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level. The valence orbital structure of boron buckyball is identical to the one in the carbon analogue.

The Canonical Form of the Rabi Hamiltonian

The Rabi Hamiltonian, describing the coupling of a two-level system to a single quantized boson mode, is studied in the Bargmann-Fock representation. The corresponding system of differential equations is transformed into a canonical form in which all regular singularities between zero and infinity have been removed. The canonical or Birkhoff-transformed equations give rise to a two-dimensional eigenvalue problem, involving the energy and a transformational parameter which affects the coupling strength. The known isolated exact solutions of the Rabi Hamiltonian are found to correspond to the uncoupled form of the canonical system.
