An Energy-Efficient Lyapunov-Based Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Controller for Electric Vehicles

As electric vehicles (EVs) are increasingly adopted as platforms for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), enhancing their energy efficiency becomes critical. With the emergence of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) offers improved traffic flow, safety, and energy efficiency by enabling real-time coordination among EVs. However, conventional CACC algorithms neglected acceleration and regenerative braking dynamics in their implementation. To address this gap, this paper proposes a third-order dynamic model for EVs which has been derived from real-world experimental data. We also propose a novel, practical, and energy-efficient Lyapunov-based CACC controller explicitly designed for EV platoons. The proposed controller is requiring lower control gains while ensuring string stability and energy efficiency. To validate its effectiveness, we conduct both simulation and experimental environments, demonstrating that our approach reduces velocity fluctuations, maintains string stability at lower headway times, and improves energy efficiency of the CACC platoon by up to 38.5% compared to a baseline CACC.

Post Fusion Bird's Eye View Feature Stabilization for Robust Multimodal 3D Detection

Camera-LiDAR fusion is widely used in autonomous driving to enable accurate 3D object detection. However, bird's-eye view (BEV) fusion detectors can degrade significantly under domain shift and sensor failures, limiting reliability in real-world deployment. Existing robustness approaches often require modifying the fusion architecture or retraining specialized models, making them difficult to integrate into already deployed systems. We propose a Post Fusion Stabilizer (PFS), a lightweight module that operates on intermediate BEV representations of existing detectors and produces a refined feature map for the original detection head. The design stabilizes feature statistics under domain shift, suppresses spatial regions affected by sensor degradation, and adaptively restores weakened cues through residual correction. Designed as a near-identity transformation, PFS preserves performance while improving robustness under diverse camera and LiDAR corruptions. Evaluations on the nuScenes benchmark demonstrate that PFS achieves state-of-the-art results in several failure modes, notably improving camera dropout robustness by +1.2% and low-light performance by +4.4% mAP while maintaining a lightweight footprint of only 3.3 M parameters.

An Actor-Critic-Identifier Control Design for Increasing Energy Efficiency of Automated Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles (EVs) are increasingly deployed, yet range limitations remain a key barrier. Improving energy efficiency via advanced control is therefore essential, and emerging vehicle automation offers a promising avenue. However, many existing strategies rely on indirect surrogates because linking power consumption to control inputs is difficult. We propose a neural-network (NN) identifier that learns this mapping online and couples it with an actor-critic reinforcement learning (RL) framework to generate optimal control commands. The resulting actor-critic-identifier architecture removes dependence on explicit models relating total power, recovered energy, and inputs, while maintaining accurate speed tracking and maximizing efficiency. Update laws are derived using Lyapunov stability analysis, and performance is validated in simulation. Compared to a traditional controller, the method increases total energy recovery by 12.84%, indicating strong potential for improving EV energy efficiency.

Orchestrated Couplings: A Time-Varying Edge Weight Framework for Efficient Event-Triggered Multiagent Networks

In this paper, we focus on reducing node-to-node information exchange in distributed control of multiagent networks while improving the overall network performance. Specifically, we consider a multiagent network that is composed of leader and follower nodes over a time-varying, connected, and undirected graph. In contrast to existing works on the event-triggered distributed control literature, we propose a time-varying edge weight event-triggered control framework. In this framework, each node dynamically adjusts its edge weights by increasing them during the transient (active) phase and decreasing them during the steady-state (idle) phase of the multiagent network. This not only reduces the number of events in the network but also improves the performance (i.e., convergence speed and control effort) of the overall multiagent network. System-theoretically, we first prove the closed-loop stability of the proposed event-triggered distributed control framework, where we then show that this framework does not exhibit a Zeno behavior. Finally, illustrative numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the efficacy of this framework.

Control of Cooperative Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: Review of Applications, Challenges, and Algorithms

A system of cooperative unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is a group of agents interacting with each other and the surrounding environment to achieve a specific task. In contrast with a single UAV, UAV swarms are expected to benefit efficiency, flexibility, accuracy, robustness, and reliability. However, the provision of external communications potentially exposes them to an additional layer of faults, failures, uncertainties, and cyber-attacks and can contribute to the propagation of error from one component to other components in a network. Also, other challenges such as complex nonlinear dynamic of UAVs, collision avoidance, velocity matching, and cohesion should be addressed adequately. The main applications of cooperative UAVs are border patrol; search and rescue; surveillance; mapping; military. Challenges to be addressed in decision and control in cooperative systems may include the complex nonlinear dynamic of UAVs, collision avoidance, velocity matching, and cohesion. In this paper, emerging topics in the field of cooperative UAVs control and their associated practical approaches are reviewed.

Optimal Control of Nonlinear Systems Using the Homotopy Perturbation Method

This paper presents a new method for solving a class of nonlinear optimal control problems with a quadratic performance index. In this method, first the original optimal control problem is transformed into a nonlinear two-point boundary value problem (TPBVP) via the Pontryagin's maximum principle. Then, using the Homotopy Perturbation Method (HPM) and introducing a convex homotopy in topologic space, the nonlinear TPBVP is transformed into a sequence of linear time-invariant TPBVP's. By solving the presented linear TPBVP sequence in a recursive manner, the optimal control law and the optimal trajectory are determined in the form of infinite series. Finally, in order to obtain an accurate enough sub-optimal control law, an iterative algorithm with low computational complexity is introduced. An illustrative example demonstrates the simplicity and efficiency of proposed method.
