Weak geometric lemma for ADR boundary of a uniform domain implies uniform rectifiability

We resolve a conjecture of Guy David and Svitlana Mayboroda. We show that if $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a uniform domain with $(n-1)$-dimensional Ahlfors David regular boundary $E = \partial \Omega$, and if $E$ satisfies the Weak Geometric Lemma, then $E$ satisfies the Bilateral Weak Geometric Lemma. In particular, $E$ is uniformly rectifiable.

Dirichlet Green's functions with singular drifts at the boundary of convex domains

In convex bounded domains in R^n with n >= 3, we establish interior pointwise upper bounds for the Dirichlet Green's function of elliptic operators in the unit ball B(0,1) in R^n, n >= 3, whose principal part is the Laplacian and which include a drift term that diverges near the boundary like a negative power of the distance with exponent strictly less than 1. This work extends an earlier result for operators with such drifts in the unit ball, and streamlines the proof in particular to adopt it to the question in convex domains.

On the dimension drop for harmonic measure on uniformly non-flat Ahlfors-David regular boundaries

We extend earlier results of Azzam on the dimension drop of the harmonic measure for a domain $\Omega\subset \R^{n}$ with $n\geq 3$, with dimensional Ahlfors regular boundary $\partial\Omega$ of dimension $s$ with $n-1-\delta_0 \leq s\leq n-1$, that is uniformly non flat. Here $\delta_0$ is a small positive constant dependent on the parameters of the problem. Our novel construction relies on elementary geometric and potential theoretic considerations. We avoid the use of Riesz transforms and compactness arguments, and also give quantitative bounds on the $\delta_0$ parameter.

The doubling property of the elliptic measure, for elliptic operators with drifts satisfying an average diverging condition

We show doubling of the elliptic measure corresponding to the operator with an elliptic principal term and a drift that diverges, on average on Whitney cubes, like the inverse distance to the boundary, with a small constant. Essentially a small Carleson constant assumption on the drift, this generalizes earlier results with the hypothesis of pointwise smallness of such a drift. This relates to recent perturbative results of rough Dirichlet solvability in domains with drifts or potentials that satisfy a Carleson measure condition, which have also been considered earlier by Hofmann-Lewis and Kenig-Pipher. While we work in 1-sided chord arc domains, these results are new even for the half-space. In the process, we also prove Hardy inequalities in such domains with Alhfors-David regular boundary, using a stopping time argument.

Pointwise bounds on Dirichlet Green's functions for a singular drift term

We introduce a technique to obtain pointwise upper and lower bounds for the Green's function of elliptic operators whose principal part is the Laplacian and that include a drift term diverging near the boundary like a power of the inverse distance with exponent less than 1, in the unit ball B(0,1) \subset \mathbb{R}^n, n \ge 3. The constants in the upper estimates are uniform in B(0,r) for each r < 1, with explicit dependence on r. The drift here belongs to C^{1,\alpha}_{\mathrm{loc}} and may, more generally, be majorized by a function radially integrable up to the boundary. These appear to be the first such estimates for non-coercive drifts and remain new even for smooth drifts, suggesting extensions to singular potentials and other settings where energy methods fail.

BMO solvability with singular drifts on ample sawtooth domains implies $L^p$ solvability

For a linear elliptic operator with a singular drift that satisfies a finite Carleson measure condition, we prove that there exist `ample' sawtooth domains of the unit ball $B(0,1)\subset \R^{n+1}$ so that a BMO solvability assumption in these sawtooth subdomains implies that the elliptic measure satisfies the weak $A_\infty$ condition with respect to the surface measure on this `ample' sawtooth domain. This is a quantifiable absolute continuity condition, which is equivalent to saying the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem is solvable for some $1<p<\infty$. Such singular drifts have been considered in the literature in the context of perturbative $L^p$ Dirichlet solvability problems, by Hofmann-Lewis and Kenig-Pipher. By an ample sawtooth domain, we mean a sawtooth domain whose boundary coincides with the boundary of the unit ball, except for an arbitrarily small fraction. The methods can be naturally extended to show the result for more general bounded Lipschitz domains.

A counterexample for pointwise upper bounds on Green's function with a singular drift at boundary

We show an example of a sequence of elliptic operators in the unit ball with drifts that diverge as the inverse distance to the boundary, for which we do not get uniform upper estimates for the Green's function with the pole at the origin. Such drifts have been considered in the literature in the study of the $L^{p}$ Dirichlet problem for both the parabolic and elliptic operators. Our construction provides a counterexample to an earlier claim of Hofmann and Lewis.

Conditional upper bounds on the least character non-residue

We extend known methods to establish upper bounds on the least character non-residues contingent on different zero-free regions within the critical strip, in particular on bounded rectangles within the critical strip along the $\sigma=1$ line at arbitrary heights. This relates to earlier conditional results on least character non-residues, and recent results of Granville and Soundararajan on character sums.

Ergodicity in the linked twist map with oppositely oriented shears

We reduce the earlier known optimal shear parameter for which ergodicity is established in the linked twist map with two linear shears in opposite sense, in the most general setting. Further, here we obtain ergodicity with possibly only one-fold twists in either lobe, while earlier results only applied for twist parameters at least 2. Almost hyperbolicity is easily established for shear parameters greater than 2, while in the most general setting of the linked twist map with both shears of equal magnitude, ergodicity was earlier established in the most general setting by Przytycki for shear parameters greater than 4.15 with at least two-fold twists in each lobe. Here we reduce this optimal shear parameter to 3.47 in the general setting. These techniques can be effected to make further improvements when additional assumptions are made on the dimensions of the strips or when the linked twist map is modified in other natural ways.

Ergodicity of a surgered flow on unit tangent bundle of hyperbolic surface

Starting with a trivial periodic flow on $\mathbb{S}M$, the unit tangent bundle of a genus two surface, we perform a Dehn-type surgery on the manifold around a tubular neighborhood of a curve on $\mathbb{S}M$ that projects to a self-intersecting closed geodesic on $M$, to get a surgered flow which restricted to the surgery region is ergodic with respect to the volume measure. The surgered flow projects to a map on the surgery track that can be taken to be a linked twist map with oppositely oriented shears which generates the ergodic behavior for sufficiently strong shears in the surgery.

Open intervals in sums and products of Cantor sets

We give new arguments for sums and products of sufficient numbers of arbitrary central Cantor sets to produce large open intervals. We further discuss the same question for $C^1$ images of such central Cantor sets. This gives another perspective on the results obtained by Astels through a different formulation on the thickness of these Cantor sets. There has been recent interest in the question of products and sums of powers of Cantor sets, and these are addressed by our methods.

Difference sets in Quadratic Density Hales Jewett conjecture with 2 letters

The Quadratic Density Hales Jewett conjecture with $2$ letters states that for large enough $n$, every dense subset of $\{0,1\}^{n^{2}}$ contains a combinatorial line where the wildcard set is of the form $\gamma \times \gamma$ where $\gamma \subset \{1,2,\dots n\}$. We show in an elementary quantitative way that every dense subset of $\{0,1\}^{n^{2}}$, for sufficiently large $n$, contains two elements such that the set of coordinate points where they differ, which we term the difference set of these two elements, is of the form $\gamma_{1}\times \gamma_{2}$ where $\gamma_1, \gamma_2$ are both nonempty subsets of $\{1,2,\dots n\}$. Further we give several non-trivial examples of dense vector subspaces of $\{0,1\}^{n^{2}}$, where in each case the wildcard set of the combinatorial line that can be obtained has restrictions on its size and shape.

Marstrand type slicing statements in $\mathbb{Z}^{2}\subset \mathbb{R}^{2}$ are false for the counting dimension

We show that for $1$ separated subsets of $\R^{2}$, the natural Marstrand type slicing statements are false with the counting dimension that was used earlier by Moreira and Lima and variants of which were introduced earlier in different contexts. We construct a $1$ separated subset $E$ of the plane which has counting dimension $1$, while for a positive Lebesgue measure parameter set of tubes of width $1$, the intersection of the tube with the set $E$ has counting dimension $1$. This is in contrast to the behavior of such sets with the mass dimension where the slicing theorems hold true.

A Marstrand type slicing theorem for subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^2 \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ with the mass dimension

We prove a Marstrand type slicing theorem for the subsets of the integer square lattice. This problem is the dual of the corresponding projection theorem, which was considered by Glasscock, and Lima and Moreira, with the mass and counting dimensions applied to subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$. In this paper, more generally we deal with a subset of the plane that is $1$ separated, and the result for subsets of the integer lattice follow as a special case. We show that the natural slicing question in this setting is true with the mass dimension.

Sums of powers, and products of elements of the middle third Cantor set

The questions of the measure and finding open intervals in certain sets of sums and products of elements of the middle third Cantor set (or a variant of it), have generated considerable interest recently. A broad general framework that makes it possible to deal with these questions was outlined by Astels. The question of finding the measure of the product of the middle third Cantor set was considered recently in an article by Athreya, Reznick and Tyson. Astels' methods apply to product sets upon considering a generalized logarithmic Cantor set, while Athreya, Reznick and Tyson's methods become difficult in dealing with sums or products of $m$'th powers as $m$ becomes large. With a new elementary dynamical technique, we can deal with both the questions of sums and products in a satisfactory way, and the proofs are of the same level of complexity as that of an elementary proof of the fact that the sum of two copies of the middle third Cantor set is $[0,2]$. Further, some observations are made on the question of intersections of one central Cantor set with an affine image of another central Cantor set both with arbitrary parameters.

On certain partition bijections related to Euler's partition problem

We give short elementary expositions of combinatorial proofs of some variants of Euler's partitition problem that were first addressed analytically by George Andrews, and later combinatorially by others. Our methods, based on ideas from a previous paper by the author , enable us to state and prove new generalizations of two of these results.

Glaisher's Partition problem

We generalize the well known Glaisher partition bijection result. For given positive integers n, d, both greater than 1, we provide a rich family of bijections between the set of partitions of n where at least one part is divisible by d, and the set of partitions where at least one part appears d or more times.

An elementary argument for the magnetic field outside a solenoid

The evaluation of the magnetic field inside and outside a uniform current density infinite solenoid of uniform cross-section is an elementary problem in classical electrodynamics that all undergraduate Physics students study. Symmetry properties of the cylinder and the judicious use of Ampere's circuital law leads to correct results; however it does not explain why the field is non zero for a finite length solenoid, and why it vanishes as the solenoid becomes infinitely long. An argument is provided in (American Journal of Physics 69, 751 (2001)) by Farley and Price, explaining how the magnetic field behaves outside the solenoid and not too far from it, as a function of the length of the solenoid. A calculation is also outlined for obtaining the field just outside the circular cross section solenoid, in the classic text Classical Electrodynamics by J.D.Jackson, 3rd ed, (John Wiley and Sons, INC) Problems 5.3, 5.4, 5.5. The purpose of this letter is to provide an elementary argument for why the field becomes negligible as the length of the solenoid is increased. An elementary calculation is provided for the field outside the solenoid, at radial distances large compared to the linear dimension of the solenoid cross section.
