Controlling Quantum Materials by Growth: Thermodynamics, Kinetics, and Defect Engineering in Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit a wide range of semiconducting, metallic, correlated, and topological electronic states that arise from strong coupling between lattice structure, dimensionality, and electronic degrees of freedom. In these materials, crystal growth is not merely a preparative step but a thermodynamic boundary condition that establishes chemical potentials, defect populations, polytype stability, and access to metastable phases. As a result, synthesis determines the structural and defect landscape from which collective electronic behavior emerges. In this Review, we develop a unified thermodynamic and kinetic framework that connects growth conditions to phase stability, defect energetics, and microstructure. We examine how chemical potential constraints define stability windows, how supersaturation and mass-transport regimes govern nucleation and morphology, and how nonequilibrium pathways enable kinetic trapping and polymorph selection. Bulk and thin-film synthesis approaches, including chemical vapor transport, flux growth, physical vapor transport, solvent-assisted crystallization, chemical vapor deposition, and molecular beam epitaxy, are placed within a common thermodynamic and kinetic map to clarify how distinct growth regimes produce characteristic disorder profiles and structural phases. By explicitly linking synthesis variables to charge-density-wave order, superconductivity, band topology, and correlation effects, this Review establishes crystal growth as a central parameter in determining the effective electronic Hamiltonian realized in experiment. This perspective provides a physically grounded framework for improving reproducibility and guiding deterministic control of emergent quantum phases in layered materials.

Magnetic Frustration in CuYbSe$_2$: an Yb-Based Triangular Lattice Selenide

The Yb based triangular lattice delafossites $A$Yb$X_2$ ($A$ = alkali metal, $X$ = O, S, Se) have recently been studied as quantum spin liquid candidates. We report the synthesis of powders and single crystals of CuYbSe$_2$ with a perfect triangular lattice of Yb$^{3+}$ moments. Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements reveal no evidence of long-range magnetic ordering down to $1.8$~K in spite of a significant antiferromagnetic exchange between Yb$^{3+}$ moments, suggesting a frustrated magnetic system. Electrical resistivity measurements indicate insulating behavior, consistent with the localized nature of magnetic moments. Heat capacity reveals that CuYbSe$_2$ can be treated as an effective spin $S = 1/2$ triangular lattice antiferromagnet below $\sim 50$~K. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on single crystals reveals weak magnetic anisotropy. These properties position CuYbSe$_2$ as a promising candidate for a quantum spin liquid state and as a new platform for exploring exotic magnetic ground states in triangular lattice systems.

Controlled growth of polar altermagnets via chemical vapor transport

Altermagnetic properties have been recently proposed in polar magnetic oxides, M$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni), where improved characteristics of stronger magnetoelectric coupling and higher magnetic transition temperatures were observed. Thus, understanding their microscopic origins is of fundamental and technological importance. However, the difficulty in growing large single crystals hinders detailed experimental studies. Here, we report the successful growth of large single crystals of the pyroelectric antiferromagnet using two representative compounds, Fe$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ and NiZnMo$_{3}$O$_{8}$. Growth was optimized using various parameters, finding the transport agent density as a primary factor, which depends strongly on the position of the pellet, the starting powder form, and the volume of the ampule. We demonstrated a controlled growth method by manipulating the convection and diffusion kinetics. High-quality crystals were characterized by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Laue diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and Raman spectroscopy. Manipulation of magnetic properties through nonmagnetic Zn doping was shown in NiZnMo$_{3}$O$_{8}$. Our results enable the detailed investigation and manipulation of their unconventional altermagnetic and multiferroic properties. This study provides crucial insight into the controlled growth of other functional quantum materials.

Exploring Low-Dimensional Magnetism in Cobalt Vanadates, ${A}$CoV$_{2}$O$_{7}$~(${A}$~=~Ca, Sr) : Crystal Growth and Magnetic Properties of Effective Spin-1/2 Zigzag Chains

We report the successful growth of high-quality single crystals of \ACVO, a quasi-one-dimensional zigzag chain compound containing Co$^{2+}$ ions, using the optical floating zone method. The crystal growth was stabilized under high-pressure argon-oxygen gas with slow growth rates, overcoming challenges associated with the incongruent melting behavior of this material. X-ray diffraction confirms the zigzag arrangement of Co$^{2+}$ ions, forming a quasi-one-dimensional chain structure. Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements reveal an antiferromagnetic phase transition at the N\'eel temperature ($T_{\text{N}} \sim 3.5$ K) and negative Curie-Weiss temperatures, indicative of dominant antiferromagnetic interactions. The distorted CoO$_6$ octahedral geometry and strong spin-orbit coupling suggest that Co$^{2+}$ ions likely exhibit an effective $J = 1/2 $ Kramers doublet state. The results presented here demonstrate the potential of \ACVO\ as a platform for investigating low-dimensional magnetism and quantum magnetic phenomena. These insights shed light on the role of the ${A}$-site ion in tuning the magnetic interactions, which will foster future research into the field-induced behavior in these cobalt vanadates.

Cluster Spin Glass State in Ba$_3$Sb$_{1+x}$Co$_{2-x}$O$_{9-\delta}$: Cation Disorder and Mixed-Valence Co Dimers

We investigate the structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of \BSCO\ ($x$ = 0.04, $\delta$ = 0.54), a hexagonal perovskite featuring face-sharing CoO$_6$ octahedra that forms Co dimers. DC and AC magnetization measurements reveal a frequency-dependent spin-freezing transition consistent with glassy dynamics. AC susceptibility fits best to the Vogel-Fulcher model, indicating collective freezing of interacting spin clusters. Isothermal magnetization follows the Langevin function, suggesting finite-sized magnetic clusters rather than isolated paramagnetic moments. Non-equilibrium dynamics, evidenced by thermoremanent magnetization and memory effects, further support a spin-glass-like state. Heat capacity shows no sharp anomalies, and neutron powder diffraction confirms the absence of magnetic Bragg peaks down to 1.5~K, ruling out long-range magnetic order. Rietveld refinement reveals significant Co/Sb intersite disorder ($\sim$~30\pct) and oxygen non-stoichiometry, introducing exchange randomness and frustration that drive the spin-glass-like behavior. Electrical resistivity exhibits Arrhenius-type temperature dependence with an activation energy of 0.173~eV, consistent with semiconducting behavior. Temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction shows no structural phase transitions, confirming that the spin-glass-like state is not lattice-driven. Our results establish \BSCO\ as a cluster spin-glass candidate, where Co dimers, disorder, and geometric frustration prevent long-range order, leading to slow spin dynamics. These findings highlight the role of cation disorder and oxygen vacancies in stabilizing unconventional magnetic states in cobalt-based hexagonal perovskites.

Strong coupling of lattice and orbital excitations in quantum magnet Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$: Anomalous temperature dependence of Raman phonons

We report low-temperature Raman signatures of the Heisenberg quantum magnet Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$, showing clear anomalies in phonon mode frequencies and linewidths below $\sim$100 K. This crossover temperature lies in between the Jahn-Teller (JT) temperature scale ($>$ room temperature) and the temperature scale associated with the spin exchange interactions ($<$ 12 K). Our experimental observation is well captured by a novel secondary JT transition associated with a cooperative reorientation of the orbitals giving rise to anomalies in the temperature dependence of Raman frequencies and linewidths. Such orbital reorganisation, in turn, affects the spin-spin exchange interactions that decide the fate of the magnet at lower temperatures and hence provide important clues to understand the energetics of the possible lower temperature quantum paramagnetic phase.

Partial molecular orbitals in face-sharing 3$d$ manganese trimer: Comparative studies on Ba$_{4}$TaMn$_{3}$O$_{12}$ and Ba$_{4}$NbMn$_{3}$O$_{12}$

We present a molecular orbital candidate Ba$_{4}$TaMn$_{3}$O$_{12}$ with a face-sharing octahedra trimer, by comparing it with a related compound Ba$_{4}$NbMn$_{3}$O$_{12}$. The synthesis of the polycrystalline powder is optimized by suppressing the secondary impurity phase via x-ray diffraction. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on the optimized samples reveal a weak magnetic hysteresis with magnetic transitions consistent with heat capacity results. The effective magnetic moments from susceptibility indicate a strongly coupled $S=2$ antiferromagnetic trimer at around room temperature, whereas the estimated magnetic entropy from heat capacity suggests the localized $S=3/2$ timer. These results can be explainable by a partial molecular orbital state, in which three $t_{2g}$ electrons are localized in each Mn ion and one $e_{g}$ electron is delocalized over two-end Mn ions of the trimer based on density functional theory calculations. This unconventional 3$d$ orbital state is comprehended as a consequence of competition between the hybrid interatomic orbitals within the Mn trimer and the local moment formation by on-site Coulomb correlations.

Pressure tuning of structure, magnetic frustration and carrier conduction in Kitaev spin liquid candidate Cu$_2$IrO$_3$: X-ray, Raman, magnetic susceptibility, resistivity and first-principles analysis

The layered honeycomb lattice iridate Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ is the closest realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, primarily due to the enhanced interlayer separation and nearly ideal honeycomb lattice. We report pressure-induced structural evolution of Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ by powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) up to $\sim$17 GPa and Raman scattering measurements up to $\sim$25 GPa. A structural phase transition (monoclinic $C2/c \: \rightarrow$ triclinic $P\bar{1}$) is observed with a broad mixed phase pressure range ($\sim$4 to 15 GPa). The triclinic phase consists of heavily distorted honeycomb lattice with Ir-Ir dimer formation and a collapsed interlayer separation. In the stability range of the low-pressure monoclinic phase, structural evolution maintains the Kitaev configuration up to 4 GPa. This is supported by the observed enhanced magnetic frustration in dc susceptibility without emergence of any magnetic ordering and an enhanced dynamic Raman susceptibility. High-pressure resistance measurements up to 25 GPa in the temperature range 1.4--300 K show resilient non-metallic $R$($T$) behaviour with significantly reduced resistivity in the high-pressure phase. The Mott 3D variable-range-hopping conduction with much reduced characteristic energy scale $T_0$ suggests that the high-pressure phase is at the boundary of localized-itinerant crossover. Using first-principles density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations, we find that at ambient pressure $\rm Cu_2IrO_3$ exists in monoclinic $P2_1/c$ phase which is energetically lower than $C2/c$ phase (both the structures are consistent with experimental XRD pattern). DFT reveals structural transition from $P2_1/c$ to $P\bar{1}$ structure at 7 GPa (involving dimerization of Ir-Ir bonds) in agreement with experimentally observed transition pressure.

Rare-earth tuned magnetism and magnetocaloric effects in double perovskites $R_2$NiMnO$_6$

We present a comprehensive experimental study of magnetization and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in double perovskite (DP) materials $R_2$NiMnO$_6$ with $R =$ Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy. While a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition, with T$_{\rm C}$ in the range $\sim 100 - 200~$K, is a common feature that can be attributed to the ordering of Mn$^{4+}$ and Ni$^{2+}$ magnetic moments, qualitatively distinct behavior depending on the choice of $R$ is observed at low temperatures. These low-temperature anomalies in magnetization are also manifest in the change in magnetic entropy, $-\Delta S_{M}$, whose sign depends on the choice of $R$. In order to understand these results, we present theoretical analysis based on mean-field approximation and Monte Carlo simulations on a minimal spin model. The model correctly captures the key features of the experimental observations.

Probing signatures of fractionalization in candidate quantum spin liquid Cu2IrO3 via anomalous Raman scattering

Long-range entanglement in quantum spin liquids (QSLs) lead to novel low energy excitations with fractionalised quantum numbers and (in 2D) statistics. Experimental detection and manipulation of these excitations present a challenge particularly in view of diverse candidate magnets. A promising probe of fractionalisation is their coupling to phonons. Here we present Raman scattering results for the S = 1/2 honeycomb iridate Cu2IrO3, a candidate Kitaev QSL with fractionalised Majorana fermions and Ising flux excitations. We observe anomalous low temperature frequency shift and linewidth broadening of the Raman intensities in addition to a broad magnetic continuum both of which, we derive, are naturally attributed to the phonon decaying into itinerant Majoranas. The dynamic Raman susceptibility marks a crossover from the QSL to a thermal paramagnet at ~120 K. The phonon anomalies below this temperature demonstrate a strong phonon-Majorana coupling. These results provide for evidence of spin fractionalisation in Cu2IrO3.

Emergence of weak pyrochlore phase and signature of field induced spin ice ground state in Dy$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$; x = 0, 0.15, 0.3

The pyrochlore oxides Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ are well studied spin ice systems and have shown the evidences of magnetic monopole excitations. Unlike these, Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ is reported to crystallize in a distorted fluorite structure. We present here the magnetic and heat capacity studies of La substituted Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$. Our findings suggest the absence of spin ice state in Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ but the emergence of the magnetic field induced spin freezing near T $\approx$ 10 K in ac susceptibility measurements which is similar to Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$. The magnetic heat capacity of Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ shows a shift in the peak position from 1.2 K in zero field to higher temperatures in the magnetic field, with the corresponding decrease in the magnetic entropy. The low temperature magnetic entropy at 5 kOe field is Rln2 - (1/2)Rln(3/2) which is same as for the spin ice state. Substitution of non-magnetic, isovalent La$^{3+}$ for Dy$^{3+}$ gradually induces the structural change from highly disordered fluorite to weakly ordered pyrochlore phase. The La$^{3+}$ substituted compounds with less distorted pyrochlore phase show the spin freezing at lower field which strengthens further on the application of magnetic field. Our results suggest that the spin ice state can be stabilized in Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ either by slowing down of the spin dynamics or by strengthening the pyrochlore phase by suitable substitution in the system.

A magnetocaloric study on the series of 3d-metal chromites ACr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ where A = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn

The 3d-metal chromites ACr$_2$O$_4$ where A is a magnetic ion, show the paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic phase transition at T$_C$ while for non-magnetic A-site ion, ACr$_2$O$_4$ show paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition at T$_N$. In this report, we present the detailed study of magnetic and the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of the 3d-metal chromites ACr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ (where A = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) near T$_C$ and T$_N$. We find the magnitude of MCE (-$\Delta$S$_M$) decreases on decreasing the magnetic moment of A-site ion with an exception for CuCr$_{2}$O$_{4} $. Additionally, to know more about the order and nature of phase transition, we have made a scaling analysis of (-$\Delta$S$_{M}$) for all the chromites across the phase transition temperatures T$_C$ and T$_N$.

Rotating magnetocaloric effect in the ferromagnetic Weyl semi-metal Co$_{3}$Sn$_{2}$S$_{2}$

The rotating magnetocaloric effect (RMCE) is a recent interest in magnetic refrigeration technique in which the cooling effect is attained by rotating the anisotropic magnetocaloric material from one orientation to the other in a fixed magnetic field. In this work, we report the anisotropic magnetocaloric properties of single crystals of the ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_{3}$Sn$_{2}$S$_{2}$ for magnetic field $H\parallel c$ axis and $H\parallel ab$ plane. We observed a significant (factor of $2$) difference between the magnetocaloric effect measured in both orientations. The rotating magnetocaloric effect has been extracted by taking the difference of the magnetic entropy change ($\Delta S_{M}$) for fields applied in the two crystallographic orientations. In a scaling analysis of $\Delta S_{M}$, the rescaled $\Delta S_{M}(T,H)$ vs reduced temperature $\theta$ curves collapse onto a single universal curve, indicating that the transition from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase at 174~K is a second order transition. Furthermore, using the power law dependence of $\Delta S_{M}$ and relative cooling power RCP, the critical exponents $\beta$ and $\gamma$ are calculated, which are consistent with the recent critical behavior study on this compound \cite{Yan2018}.

A magnetocaloric study of the magnetostructural transitions in NiCr$_2$O$_4$

The spinel NiCr$_2$O$_4$ is known to show a ferrimagnetic transition at $T_c = 70$~K, and magneto-structural transitions at $T_s = 30$~K and $T_o = 20$~K\@. We present a detailed magnetic and magnetocaloric effect (MCE $= -\Delta S_{M}(T)$) study across these transitions. The $-\Delta S_{M}(T)$ shows a positive anomaly at $T_c$, $T_s$, and $T_o$. In addition to these anomalies, we report a new unreported feature at $T \approx 8.5$~K where $-\Delta S_{M}(T)$ shows a negative anomaly or the inverse MCE. An Arrot plot of the isothermal magnetization data reveals important information about the nature of the possible phases revealed in $-\Delta S_{M}(T)$. We have also made a scaling analysis of the $-\Delta S_{M}(T)$ data around these transitions. This analysis suggests that the transition at $T_c$ is a second-order Mean field like transition, the transition at $T_s$ is not second order and is non-mean field like, while the new transition at $T = 8.5$~K is non-mean field like but is second order in nature. Our study demonstrates that magnetocaloric effect is sensitive to magneto-structural changes in materials and can be used for the identification of new phases and transitions.

Exotic low-energy excitations emergent in the random Kitaev magnet Cu$_2$IrO$_3$

We report on magnetization $M(H)$, dc/ac magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T)$, specific heat $C_{\mathrm{m}}(T)$ and muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements of the Kitaev honeycomb iridate Cu$_2$IrO$_2$ with quenched disorder. In spite of the chemical disorders, we find no indication of spin glass down to 260~mK from the $C_{\mathrm{m}}(T)$ and $\mu$SR data. Furthermore, a persistent spin dynamics observed by the zero-field muon spin relaxation evidences an absence of static magnetism. The remarkable observation is a scaling relation of $\chi[H,T]$ and $M[H,T]$ in $H/T$ with the scaling exponent $\alpha=0.26-0.28$, expected from bond randomness. However, $C_{\mathrm{m}}[H,T]/T$ disobeys the predicted universal scaling law, pointing towards the presence of low-lying excitations in addition to random singlets. Our results signify an intriguing role of quenched disorder in a Kitaev spin system in creating low-energy excitations possibly pertaining to Z$_2$ fluxes.

Large Magnetocaloric effect and magnetic phase transitions in Nd$_2$NiMnO$_6$

We present combined experimental and theoretical investigations on the magnetic and magnetocaloric behavior of Nd$_2$NiMnO$_6$. The relative cooling power (RCP) which quantifies the usefulness of a magnetocaloric (MC) material is estimated to be $\approx 300$ J/Kg near the ferromagnetic transition at $T_C \approx 195$ K. This RCP is comparable to the best known MC materials. Additionally, the magnetic entropy change has a broad profile ($T_C - 50~{\rm K} < T < T_C + 50~{\rm K}$) leading to an enhancement in the working-range of temperatures for magnetocaloric based cooling. These features make Nd$_2$NiMnO$_6$ a superior magnetocaloric material compared for example, to the nonmagnetic counterpart Y$_2$NiMnO$_6$. We identify the mechanism for the enhanced RCP which can guide search for future MC materials.
