On the distribution of shapes of sextic pure number fields

The shape of a number field $K$ of degree $n$ is defined as the equivalence class of the lattice of integers with respect to linear operations that are composites of rotations, reflections, and positive scalar dilations. The shape is a point in the space of shapes $\mathscr{S}_{n-1}$, which is the double quotient $\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(\mathbb{Z}) \backslash \mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(\mathbb{R}) / \mathrm{GO}_{n-1}(\mathbb{R})$. We investigate the distribution of shapes of pure sextic number fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[6]{m})$, ordered by absolute discriminant. Such fields are partitioned into $20$ distinct Types determined by local conditions at $2$ and $3$, and an explicit integral basis is given in each case. For each Type, the shape of $K$ admits an explicit description in terms of shape parameters. Fixing the sign of $m$ and a Type, we prove that the corresponding shapes are equidistributed along a translated torus orbit in the space of shapes. The limiting distribution is given by an explicit measure expressed as the product of a continuous measure and a discrete measure.

On the average $2$-torsion in class groups and narrow class groups of cubic orders with prescribed shape

We study the distribution of $2$-torsion in class groups and narrow class groups of cubic fields and cubic orders subject to prescribed shape conditions. The \emph{shape} of a cubic order in a number field is a natural geometric invariant taking values in the modular surface $\mathbb{H}/\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. Fix a subset $W$ of the modular surface with positive hyperbolic measure and boundary of measure zero. Refining the methods of Bhargava and Varma, we prove that among cubic fields with shape in $W$, the average size of the $2$-torsion subgroup of the class group is $5/4$ for totally real fields and $3/2$ for complex fields, while the average size of the $2$-torsion subgroup of the narrow class group for totally real cubic fields is $2$. We also obtain analogous results for cubic orders satisfying prescribed local conditions at all primes.

Counting rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$ with prescribed local conditions

We explore distribution questions for rational maps on the projective line $\mathbb{P}^1$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ within the framework of arithmetic dynamics, drawing analogies to elliptic curves. Specifically, we investigate counting problems for rational maps $ϕ$ of fixed degree $d \geq 2$ with prescribed reduction properties. Our main result establishes that the set of rational maps with minimal resultant has positive density. Additionally, for degree 2 rational maps, we perform explicit computations demonstrating that over $32.7\%$ possess a squarefree, and hence minimal, resultant.

Distribution questions for isogeny graphs over finite fields

In the first part of the paper, we fix a non-CM elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ and an odd prime $\ell$ and investigate the distribution of invariants associated to the $\ell$-volcano containing the reduction $E_p$, as $p$ ranges over primes of good ordinary reduction. Let $H(p)$ be the height of the volcano and let $d'(p)$ denote the relative position of $j(E_p)$ above the floor, and let $r\ge 0$ be an integer. Assuming that the $\ell$-adic Galois representation attached to $E$ is surjective, we derive an explicit formula for the natural density of primes $p$ for which $H(p)=r$ (resp.\ $d'(p)=r$). In the non-surjective case, we show that all sufficiently large heights occur with positive density. In the second part of the paper, we analyze the distribution of $\ell$-volcano heights over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and consider the limit as $q\to\infty$. Using analytic estimates for sums of Hurwitz class numbers in arithmetic progressions, we compute exact limiting densities for ordinary elliptic curves whose $\ell$-isogeny graph has a prescribed height $r$.

Selmer stability for elliptic curves in Galois $\ell$-extensions

We study the behavior of Selmer groups of an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ in finite Galois extensions with prescribed Galois group. Fix a prime $\ell \geq 5$, a finite group $G$ with $\#G = \ell^n$, and an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ with $Sel_\ell(E/\mathbb{Q}) = 0$ and surjective mod-$\ell$ Galois representation. We show that there exist infinitely many Galois extensions $F/\mathbb{Q}$ with Galois group $Gal(F/\mathbb{Q}) \simeq G$ for which the $\ell$-Selmer group $Sel_\ell(E/F)$ also vanishes. We obtain an asymptotic lower bound for the number $M(G, E; X)$ of such fields $F$ with absolute discriminant $|Δ_F|\leq X$, proving that there is an explicit constant $δ>0$ such that $M(G, E; X) \gg X^{\frac{1}{\ell^{n-1}(\ell - 1)}} (\log X)^{δ- 1}$. The asymptotic for $M(G, E; X)$ matches the conjectural count for all $G$-extensions $F/\mathbb{Q}$ for which $|Δ_F|\leq X$, up to a power of $\log X$. This demonstrates that Selmer stability is not a rare phenomenon.

Counting elliptic curves with prescribed entanglements

We establish asymptotic lower bounds for the number of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with prescribed entanglement of division fields, ordered by naive height. Such elliptic curves are obtained as $1$-parameter families arising from certain genus $0$ modular curves. We apply techniques from the geometry of numbers and sieve methods to prove that the number of elliptic curves with unexplained entanglements $\mathbb{Q}(E[2]) \cap \mathbb{Q}(E[3]) \neq \mathbb{Q}$ and $\mathbb{Q}(E[2]) \cap \mathbb{Q}(E[5]) \neq \mathbb{Q}$ and naive height $\leq X$, grows as $\gg X^{1/9}$ and $\gg X^{1/12}$, respectively.

Arithmetic invariants of torus links

The classical analogy between knots and primes motivates the study of Alexander polynomials through an arithmetic perspective. In this article we study the two-parameter family of torus knots and links $T_{p,q}$ and analyze the asymptotic behaviour of the zeros of their Alexander polynomials $Δ_{p,q}(t)$, defined with respect to the total linking number covering. We prove that as $p,q\to\infty$ these zeros become equidistributed on the unit circle and derive an explicit formula for the limiting frequency with which primitive $r$-th roots of unity appear. To capture finer statistical information, we introduce the moment sequence of the zero distribution and compute its generating function in closed form. We further examine the Iwasawa theory of the corresponding branched covers, determining the Iwasawa invariants. The logarithmic Mahler measure of $Δ_{p,q}(t)$ vanishes identically and the associated homological growth in towers of abelian covers of $S^3$ branched along $T_{p,q}$ is subexponential.

Diophantine stability for elliptic curves on average

Let $K$ be a number field and $\ell \geq 5$ a prime number. Mazur and Rubin introduced the notion of diophantine stability for a variety $X_{/K}$ at a prime $\ell$. We show that there is a positive density set of elliptic curves $E_{/\mathbb{Q}}$ of rank $1$ such that $E_{/K}$ is diophantine stable at $\ell$. This has implications for Hilbert's Tenth Problem over $\mathscr{O}_K$. This problem asks whether there exists an algorithm that decides in finite time whether a finite system of Diophantine equations over $\mathscr{O}_K$ has a solution.

Remarks on Greenberg's conjecture for Galois representations associated to elliptic curves

Let $E_{/\mathbb{Q}}$ be an elliptic curve and $p$ be an odd prime number at which $E$ has good ordinary reduction. Let $Sel_{p^\infty}(\mathbb{Q}_\infty, E)$ denote the $p$-primary Selmer group of $E$ considered over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. The (algebraic) \emph{$μ$-invariant} of $Sel_{p^\infty}(\mathbb{Q}_\infty, E)$ is denoted $μ_p(E)$. Denote by $\barρ_{E, p}:Gal(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})\rightarrow GL_2(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})$ the Galois representation on the $p$-torsion subgroup of $E(\bar{\mathbb{Q}})$. Greenberg conjectured that if $\barρ_{E, p}$ is reducible, then there is a rational isogeny $E\rightarrow E'$ whose degree is a power of $p$, and such that $μ_p(E')=0$. In this article, we study this conjecture by showing that it is satisfied provided some purely Galois theoretic conditions hold that are expressed in terms of the representation $\barρ_{E,p}$. In establishing our results, we leverage a theorem of Coates and Sujatha on the algebraic structure of the fine Selmer group. Furthermore, in the case when $\barρ_{E, p}$ is irreducible, we show that our hypotheses imply that $μ_p(E)=0$ provided the classical Iwasawa $μ$-invariant vanishes for the splitting field $\mathbb{Q}(E[p]):=\bar{\mathbb{Q}}^{ker\barρ_{E,p}}$.

The second moment of cubic Dirichlet L-functions over function fields

In this article, we study the second moment of cubic Dirichlet L-functions at the central point $s=1/2$ over the rational function field $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$, where $q$ is a power of an odd prime satisfying $q \equiv 2 \pmod{3}$. Our result extends prior work of David, Florea and Lalin, who obtained an asymptotic formula for the first moment. Our approach relies on analytic techniques (Perron's formula, approximate functional equation, etc), adapted to the function field context. A key step in the construction is to relate second moment to certain averages of Gauss sums, which are estimated in loc. cit. using results of Kubota and Hoffstein.

Mazur's growth number conjecture and congruences

Motivated by the work of Greenberg-Vatsal and Emerton-Pollack-Weston, I investigate the extent to which Mazur's conjecture on the growth of Selmer ranks in $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of an imaginary quadratic field persists under $p$-congruences between Galois representations. As a first step, I establish Mazur's conjecture for certain triples $(E, K, p)$ under explicit hypotheses. Building on this, I prove analogous results for Greenberg Selmer groups attached to modular forms that are congruent mod $p$ to $E$, including all specializations arising from Hida families of fixed tame level. In particular, I show that the Mordell-Weil ranks in non-anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $K$ remain bounded for elliptic curves $E'$ such that $E[p]$ and $E'[p]$ are isomorphic as Galois modules.

Deformations of reducible Galois representations with large Selmer $p$-rank

Let $p\geq 5$ be a prime number. In this paper, we construct Galois representations associated with modular forms for which the dimension of the $p$-torsion in the Bloch-Kato Selmer group can be made arbitrarily large. Our result extends similar results known for small primes, such as Matsuno's work on Tate-Shafarevich groups of elliptic curves. Extending the technique of Hamblen and Ramakrishna, we lift residually reducible Galois representations to modular representations for which the associated Greenberg Selmer groups are minimally generated by a large number of elements over the Iwasawa algebra. We deduce that there is an isogenous lattice for which the Bloch-Kato Selmer group has large $p$-rank.

Iwasawa theory and the representations of finite groups

In this note, I develop a representation-theoretic refinement of the Iwasawa theory of finite Cayley graphs. Building on analogies between graph zeta functions and number-theoretic L-functions, I study $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-towers of Cayley graphs and the asymptotic growth of their Jacobians. My main result establishes that the Iwasawa polynomial associated to such a tower admits a canonical factorization indexed by the irreducible representations of the underlying group. This leads to the definition of representation-theoretic Iwasawa polynomials, whose properties are studied.

On the Iwasawa invariants of Artin representations

We study Iwasawa invariants associated to Selmer groups of Artin representations, and criteria for the vanishing of the associated algebraic Iwasawa invariants. The conditions obtained can be used to study natural distribution questions in this context.

An analogue of Kida's formula in graph theory

Let $\ell$ be a rational prime and let $p:Y\rightarrow X$ be a Galois cover of finite graphs whose Galois group is a finite $\ell$-group. Consider a $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-tower above $X$ and its pullback along $p$. Assuming that all the graphs in the pullback are connected, one obtains a $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-tower above $Y$. Under the assumption that the Iwasawa $μ$-invariant of the tower above $X$ vanishes, we prove a formula relating the Iwasawa $λ$-invariant of the $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-tower above $X$ to the Iwasawa $λ$-invariant of the pullback. This formula is analogous to Kida's formula in classical Iwasawa theory. We present an application to the study of structural properties of certain noncommutative pro-$\ell$ towers of graphs, based on an analogy with classical results of Cuoco on the growth of Iwasawa invariants in $\mathbb{Z}_\ell^2$-extensions of number fields. Our investigations are illustrated by explicit examples.

On Malle's conjecture for the product of symmetric and nilpotent groups

Let $G$ be a finite nilpotent group and $n\in \{3,4, 5\}$. Consider $S_n\times G$ as a subgroup of $S_n\times S_{|G|}\subset S_{n|G|}$, where $G$ embeds into the second factor of $S_n\times S_{|G|}$ via the regular representation. Over any number field $k$, we prove the strong form of Malle's conjecture for $S_n\times G$ viewed as a subgroup of $S_{n|G|}$. Our result requires that $G$ satisfies some mild conditions.

Rank stability of elliptic curves in certain non-abelian extensions

Let $E_{/\mathbb{Q}}$ be an elliptic curve with rank $E(\mathbb{Q})=0$. Fix an odd prime $p$, a positive integer $n$ and a finite abelian extension $K/\mathbb{Q}$ with rank $E(K) = 0$. In this paper, we show that there exist infinitely many extensions $L/K$ such that $L/\mathbb{Q}$ is Galois with $\operatorname{Gal}(L/\mathbb{Q}) \simeq \operatorname{Gal}(K/\mathbb{Q}) \ltimes \mathbb{Z}/p^n\mathbb{Z}$, and rank $E(L)=0$. This is an extension of earlier results on rank stability of elliptic curves in cyclic extensions of prime power order to a non-abelian setting. We also obtain an asymptotic lower bound for the number of such extensions, ordered by their absolute discriminant.
