Bounds on the Mordell-Weil rank of elliptic fibrations

We prove that the Mordell-Weil group of a higher dimensional elliptic fibration naturally embeds into that of a suitable elliptic surface. We give sufficient conditions for the existence of such surfaces. We apply our result to obtain explicit and uniform bounds for the Mordell-Weil rank of elliptic threefolds of Kodaira dimension zero, including Calabi-Yau threefolds, confirming predictions from physics. We prove new explicit bounds for a broad class of elliptic fourfolds. These results suggest a general linear bound for the Mordell-Weil rank in terms of the dimension of the elliptic fibration, which we formulate as a conjecture.

Rational elliptic surfaces with six singular double fibres

A rational elliptic surface with section is a smooth, rational, complex, projective surface $\mathcal{X}$ that admits a relatively minimal fibration $f: \mathcal{X}\longrightarrow \bbP^1$ such that its general fibre is a smooth irreducible curve of genus one and $f$ has a section. In this paper, we classify rational elliptic surfaces with section that have exactly six singular fibres, each counted with multiplicity two. The fibres that appear with multiplicity exactly two are either of type $II$ or of type $I_2$ of the Kodaira classification. We interpret our classification from various viewpoints: a pencil of plane cubic curves, the Weierstrass equation, a double cover of $\bbF_2$ branched over an appropriate trisection of the ruling of $\bbF_2$ plus the negative section, a double cover of the plane branched along a quartic curve, plus the datum of a point on the plane. Moreover, either we give explicit normal forms for the plane quartic curve, or we indicate how to find it.

Chiral global embedding of Fibre Inflation with $\overline{\rm D3}$ uplift

We carefully analyse the challenges posed by the construction of type IIB chiral global embeddings of Fibre Inflation with $\overline{ \rm D3}$ uplift to a de Sitter vacuum. We present an explicit example involving an $h^{1,1}=4$ Calabi-Yau manifold with a K3 fibration and a del Pezzo divisor supporting non-perturbative effects. The chosen orientifold involution induces O3-planes that can be placed on top of each other at the tip of the throat of a deformed conifold singularity. The D7-brane sector contains standard magnetised branes and a Whitney brane. The former induce chiral matter and generate quantum effects that stabilise the K\"ahler moduli, while the latter helps to increase the total D3-charge. We study in detail the constraints on the parameter space leading to an observationally viable inflationary dynamics, finding several regions where the effective field theory is under control.

Spectrum bounds in geometry

Filipazzi, Hacon and Svaldi proved that there are only finitely many topological types of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds. We explore the implications of their results on the boundedness of the geometric quantities in the massless spectrum of the F-theory Calabi-Yau compactifications. We conclude with explicit bounds.

Reflexive polygons and rational elliptic surfaces

In this note we study in detail the geometry of eight rational elliptic surfaces naturally associated to the sixteen reflexive polygons. The elliptic fibrations supported by these surfaces correspond under mirror symmetry to the eight families of smooth del Pezzo surfaces with very ample anticanonical bundle.

Elliptic threefolds with high Mordell-Weil rank

We present the first examples of smooth elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds with Mordell-Weil rank 10, the highest currently known value. They are given by the Schoen threefolds introduced by Namikawa; there are six isolated fibers of Kodaira Type IV. We explicitly compute the Shioda homomorphism for the generators of the Mordell-Weil group and their induced height pairing. Compactification of F-theory on these threefolds gives an effective theory in six dimensions which contains ten abelian gauge group factors. We compute the massless matter spectrum. In particular, we show that the charged singlet matter need not reside at enhancement loci of Type $I_2$, as previously believed. We relate the multiplicities of the massless spectrum to genus-zero Gopakumar-Vafa invariants and other geometric quantities of the Calabi-Yau. We show that the gravitational and abelian anomaly cancellation conditions are satisfied. We prove a Geometric Anomaly Cancellation equation and we deduce birational equivalence for the quantities in the spectrum. We explicitly describe a Weierstrass model over $\mathbb P^2$ of the Calabi-Yau threefolds as a log canonical model and compare it to a construction by Elkies and classical results of Burkhardt.

$6$D Anomaly-Free Matter Spectrum in F-theory on Singular Spaces

In this paper we study the 6d localized charged matter spectrum of F-theory directly on a singular elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-fold, i.e. without smoothing via resolution or deformation of the entire fibration. Given only the base surface, discriminant locus, and the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ local system, we propose a general prescription for determining the charged matter spectrum localized at intersections of seven-branes, using the technology of string junctions. More precisely, at each codimension-$2$ collision of seven-branes, we determine the local seven-brane content and compute the number of massless string junctions modulo the action of the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ monodromy. We find agreement with the predicted results from $6$d anomaly cancellation in all cases considered. Examples include a generic Weierstrass model with arbitrary Kodaira fiber intersecting an $I_1$, as well as cases with jointly charged matter localized at intersections of non-abelian seven-branes.

Higher Dimensional Elliptic Fibrations and Zariski Decompositions

We study the existence and properties of birationally equivalent models for elliptically fibered varieties. In particular these have either the structure of Mori fiber spaces or, assuming some standard conjectures, minimal models with a Zariski decomposition compatible with the elliptic fibration. We prove relations between the birational invariants of the elliptically fibered variety, the base of the fibration and of its Jacobian.

F-theory on Quotient Threefolds with (2,0) Discrete Superconformal Matter

We explore 6-dimensional compactifications of F-theory exhibiting (2,0) superconformal theories coupled to gravity that include discretely charged superconformal matter. Beginning with F-theory geometries with Abelian gauge fields and superconformal sectors, we provide examples of Higgsing transitions which break the $U(1)$ gauge symmetry to a discrete remnant in which the matter fields are also non-trivially coupled to a (2,0) SCFT. In the compactification background this corresponds to a geometric transition linking two fibered Calabi-Yau geometries defined over a singular base complex surface. An elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold with non-zero Mordell-Weil rank can be connected to a smooth non-simply connected genus one fibered geometry constructed as a Calabi-Yau quotient. These hyperconifold transitions exhibit multiple fibers in co-dimension 2 over the base.

Non-simply-laced Symmetry Algebras in F-theory on Singular Spaces

We demonstrate how non-simply-laced gauge and flavor symmetries arise in F-theory on spaces with non-isolated singularities. The breaking from a simply-laced symmetry to one that is non-simply-laced is induced by Calabi-Yau complex structure deformation. In all examples the deformation maintains non-isolated singularities but is accompanied by a splitting of an I1 seven-brane that opens new loops in the geometry near a non-abelian seven-brane. The splitting also arises in the moduli space of a probe D3-brane, which upon traversing the new loop experiences a monodromy that acts on 3-7 string junctions on the singular space. The monodromy reduces the symmetry algebra, which is the flavor symmetry of the D3-brane and the gauge symmetry of the seven-brane, to one that is non-simply-laced. A collision of the D3-brane with the seven-brane gives rise to a 4d N = 1 SCFT with a non-simply-laced flavor symmetry.

On topological invariants of algebraic threefolds with ($\mathbb Q$-factorial) singularities

We study local, global and local-to-global properties of threefolds with certain singularities. We prove criteria for these threefolds to be rational homology manifolds and conditions for threefolds to satisfy rational Poincaré duality. We relate the topological Euler characteristic of elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds with $\mathbb Q$-factorial terminal singularities to dimensions of Lie algebras and certain representations, Milnor and Tyurina numbers and other birational invariants of an elliptic fibration. We give an interpretation in terms of complex deformations. We state a conjecture on the extension of Kodaira's classification of singular fibers on relatively minimal elliptic surfaces to the class of birationally equivalent relatively minimal genus one fibered varieties and we give results in this direction.

On the Hodge conjecture for hypersurfaces in toric varieties

We show that very general hypersurfaces in odd-dimensional simplicial projective toric varieties verifying a certain combinatorial property satisfy the Hodge conjecture (these include projective spaces). This gives a connection between the Oda conjecture and Hodge conjecture. We also give an explicit criterion which depends on the degree for very general hypersurfaces for the combinatorial condition to be verified.

The Noether-Lefschetz locus of surfaces in toric threefolds

The Noether-Lefschetz theorem asserts that any curve in a very general surface $X$ in $\mathbb P^3$ of degree $d \geq 4$ is a restriction of a surface in the ambient space, that is, the Picard number of $X$ is $1$. We proved previously that under some conditions, which replace the condition $d \geq 4$, a very general surface in a simplicial toric threefold $\mathbb P_Σ$ (with orbifold singularities) has the same Picard number as $\mathbb P_Σ$. Here we define the Noether-Lefschetz loci of quasi-smooth surfaces in $\mathbb P_Σ$ in a linear system of a Cartier ample divisor with respect to a (-1)-regular, respectively 0-regular, ample Cartier divisor, and give bounds on their codimensions. We also study the components of the Noether-Lefschetz loci which contain a line, defined as a rational curve that is "minimal" in a suitable sense.

Terminal Singularities, Milnor Numbers, and Matter in F-theory

We initiate a systematic investigation of F-theory on elliptic fibrations with singularities which cannot be resolved without breaking the Calabi-Yau condition, corresponding to $\mathbb Q$-factorial terminal singularities. It is the purpose of this paper to elucidate the physical origin of such non-crepant singularities in codimension two and to systematically analyse F-theory compactifications containing such singularities. The singularities reflect the presence of localised matter states from wrapped M2-branes which are not charged under any massless gauge potential. We identify a class of $\mathbb Q$-factorial terminal singularities on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds for which we can compute the number of uncharged localised hypermultiplets in terms of their associated Milnor numbers. These count the local complex deformations of the singularities. The resulting six-dimensional spectra are shown to be anomaly-free. We exemplify this in a variety of cases, including models with non-perturbative gauge groups with both charged and uncharged localised matter. The underlying mathematics will be discussed further in a forthcoming publication.

Dualities of Deformed $\mathcal{N=2}$ SCFTs from Link Monodromy on D3-brane States

We study D3-brane theories that are dually described as deformations of two different $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal theories with massless monopoles and dyons. These arise at the self-intersection of a seven-brane in F-theory, which cuts out a link on a small three-sphere surrounding the self-intersection. The spectrum is studied by taking small loops in the three-sphere, yielding a link-induced monodromy action on string junction D3-brane states, and subsequently quotienting by the monodromy. This reduces the differing flavor algebras of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories to the same flavor algebra, as required by duality, and projects out charged states, yielding an $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal theory on the D3-brane. In one, a deformation of a rank one Argyres-Douglas theory retains its $SU(2)$ flavor symmetry and exhibits a charge neutral flavor triplet that is comprised of electron, dyon, and monopole string junctions. From duality we argue that the monodromy projection should also be imposed away from the conformal point, in which case the D3-brane field theory appears to exhibit confinement of electrons, dyons, and monopoles. We will address the mathematical counterparts in a companion paper.

Discrete Symmetries in Heterotic/F-theory Duality and Mirror Symmetry

We study aspects of Heterotic/F-theory duality for compactifications with Abelian discrete gauge symmetries. We consider F-theory compactifications on genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with n-sections, associated with the Tate-Shafarevich group Z_n. Such models are obtained by studying first a specific toric set-up whose associated Heterotic vector bundle has structure group Z_n. By employing a conjectured Heterotic/F-theory mirror symmetry we construct dual geometries of these original toric models, where in the stable degeneration limit we obtain a discrete gauge symmetry of order two and three, for compactifications to six dimensions. We provide explicit constructions of mirror-pairs for symmetric examples with Z_2 and Z_3, in six dimensions. The Heterotic models with symmetric discrete symmetries are related in field theory to a Higgsing of Heterotic models with two symmetric abelian U(1) gauge factors, where due to the Stuckelberg mechanism only a diagonal U(1) factor remains massless, and thus after Higgsing only a diagonal discrete symmetry of order n is present in the Heterotic models and detected via Heterotic/F-theory duality. These constructions also provide further evidence for the conjectured mirror symmetry in Heterotic/F-theory at the level of fibrations with torsional sections and those with multi-sections.

Origin of Abelian Gauge Symmetries in Heterotic/F-theory Duality

We study aspects of heterotic/F-theory duality for compactifications with Abelian gauge symmetries. We consider F-theory on general Calabi-Yau manifolds with a rank one Mordell-Weil group of rational sections. By rigorously performing the stable degeneration limit in a class of toric models, we derive both the Calabi-Yau geometry as well as the spectral cover describing the vector bundle in the heterotic dual theory. We carefully investigate the spectral cover employing the group law on the elliptic curve in the heterotic theory. We find in explicit examples that there are three different classes of heterotic duals that have U(1) factors in their low energy effective theories: split spectral covers describing bundles with S(U(m) x U(1)) structure group, spectral covers containing torsional sections that seem to give rise to bundles with SU(m) x Z_k structure group and bundles with purely non-Abelian structure groups having a centralizer in E_8 containing a U(1) factor. In the former two cases, it is required that the elliptic fibration on the heterotic side has a non-trivial Mordell-Weil group. While the number of geometrically massless U(1)'s is determined entirely by geometry on the F-theory side, on the heterotic side the correct number of U(1)'s is found by taking into account a Stuckelberg mechanism in the lower-dimensional effective theory. In geometry, this corresponds to the condition that sections in the two half K3 surfaces that arise in the stable degeneration limit of F-theory can be glued together globally.
