Category $\mathcal{O}$ for truncated shifted Yangians and the bi-infinite Bott-Samelson variety

In this paper, we study the category $\mathcal{O}$ of representations of shifted Yangians associated to a simply-laced simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ over $\mathbb{C}$. In particular, we prove that the (complexified) Grothendieck ring of this category is isomorphic to the Cox ring of the open bi-infinite Bott-Samelson variety, which is a pro-variety we construct from Bott-Samelson varieties for alternating heaps. Using work of Francone-Leclerc, we prove a conjecture of Hernandez-Zhang by identifying the above Grothendieck ring with a cluster algebra defined by Geiss-Hernandez-Leclerc. Our methods also yield an action of the Langlands dual group $G^{\vee}$ on this Grothendieck ring, and show that the shifted coproducts defined in work of the first and fifth authors with collaborators give rise to coproducts for truncated shifted Yangians. This machinery then allows us to prove further conjectures of Frenkel-Hernandez and Geiss-Hernandez-Leclerc on extended $QQ$-systems, and to obtain a generalization of a duality defined by Hernandez-Leclerc.

On a specialization of Toda eigenfunctions

This paper studies rational functions $\mathfrak{J}_\alpha(q)$, which depend on a positive element $\alpha$ of the root lattice of a root system. These functions arise as Shapovalov pairings of Whittaker vectors in Verma modules of highest weight $-\rho$ for quantum groups and as Hilbert series of Zastava spaces, and are related to the Toda system. They are specializations of multivariate functions more commonly studied in the literature. We investigate the denominator of these rational functions and give an explicit combinatorial formula for the numerator in type A. We also propose a conjectural realization of the numerator as the Poincar\'e polynomial of a smooth variety in type A.

Equivariant Schubert calculus and geometric Satake

The main classical result of Schubert calculus is that multiplication rules for the basis of Schubert cycles inside the cohomology ring of the Grassmannian $G(n,m)$ are the same as multiplication rules for the basis of Schur polynomials in the ring of symmetric polynomials. In this paper, we explain how to recover this somewhat mysterious connection by using the geometric Satake correspondence to put the structure of a representation of $GL_m$ on $H^\bullet(G(n,m))$ and comparing it to the Fock space representation on symmetric polynomials. This proof also extends to equivariant Schubert calculus, and gives an explanation of the relationship between torus-equivariant cohomology of Grassmannians and double Schur polynomials.

Chess tableaux, powers of two and affine Lie algebras

Chess tableaux are a special kind of standard Young tableaux where, in the chessboard coloring of the Young diagram, even numbers always appear in white cells and odd numbers in black cells. If, for $\lambda$ a partition of $n$, $\text{Chess}(\lambda)$ denotes the number of chess tableaux of shape $\lambda$, then Chow, Eriksson and Fan observed that $\displaystyle\sum_{\lambda \vdash n} \text{Chess}(\lambda)^2$ is divisible by unusually large powers of $2$. In this paper, we give an explanation for this phenomenon, proving a lower bound of $n-O(\sqrt{n})$ for the $2$-adic valuation of this sum and a generalization of it. We do this by exploiting a connection with a certain representation of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_2}$ on the vector space with basis indexed by partitions. Our result about chess tableaux then follows from a study of the basic representation of $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_2}$ with coefficients taken from the ring of rational numbers with odd denominators.

Digraphs with exactly one Eulerian tour

We give two combinatorial proofs of the fact that the number of loopless digraphs on the vertex set $[n]$ with no isolated vertices and with exactly one Eulerian tour up to a cyclic shift is $\frac{1}{2}(n-1)!C_{n}$, where $C_{n}$ denotes the $n$-th Catalan number. We construct a bijection with a set of labeled rooted plane trees and with a set of valid parenthesis arrangements.

Extremal results for graphs of bounded metric dimension

Metric dimension is a graph parameter motivated by problems in robot navigation, drug design, and image processing. In this paper, we answer several open extremal problems on metric dimension and pattern avoidance in graphs from (Geneson, Metric dimension and pattern avoidance, Discrete Appl. Math. 284, 2020, 1-7). Specifically, we construct a new family of graphs that allows us to determine the maximum possible degree of a graph of metric dimension at most $k$, the maximum possible degeneracy of a graph of metric dimension at most $k$, the maximum possible chromatic number of a graph of metric dimension at most $k$, and the maximum $n$ for which there exists a graph of metric dimension at most $k$ that contains $K_{n, n}$. We also investigate a variant of metric dimension called edge metric dimension and solve another problem from the same paper for $n$ sufficiently large by showing that the edge metric dimension of $P_n^{d}$ is $d$ for $n \geq d^{d-1}$. In addition, we use a probabilistic argument to make progress on another open problem from the same paper by showing that the maximum possible clique number of a graph of edge metric dimension at most $k$ is $2^{\Theta(k)}$. We also make progress on a problem from (N. Zubrilina, On the edge dimension of a graph, Discrete Math. 341, 2018, 2083-2088) by finding a family of new triples $(x, y, n)$ for which there exists a graph of metric dimension $x$, edge metric dimension $y$, and order $n$. In particular, we show that for each integer $k > 0$, there exist graphs $G$ with metric dimension $k$, edge metric dimension $3^k(1-o(1))$, and order $3^k(1+o(1))$.

Ulam Sets in New Settings

The classical Ulam sequence is defined recursively as follows: $a_1=1$, $a_2=2$, and $a_n$, for $n > 2$, is the smallest integer not already in the sequence that can be written uniquely as the sum of two distinct earlier terms. This sequence is known for its mysterious quasi-periodic behavior and its surprising rigidity when we let $a_2$ vary. This definition can be generalized to other sets of generators in different settings with a binary operation and a valid notion of size. Since there is not always a natural linear ordering of the elements, the resulting collections are called Ulam sets. In this paper, we study Ulam sets in new settings. First, we investigate the structure of canonical Ulam sets in free groups; this is the first investigation of Ulam sets in noncommutative groups. We prove several symmetry results and prove a periodicity result for eventually periodic words with fixed prefixes. Then, we study Ulam sets in $\mathbb{Z}\times (\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})$ and prove regularity for an infinite class of initial sets. We also examine an intriguing phenomenon about decompositions of later elements into sums of the generators. Finally, we consider $\mathcal{V}$-sets, a variant where the summands are not required to be distinct; we focus on $\mathcal{V}$-sets in $\mathbb{Z}^2$.
