Hall effect and inter-chain magneto-optical properties of coupled Luttinger liquids

We consider the Hall effect in a system of weakly coupled Luttinger chains. We obtain the full conductivity tensor in the absence of dissipation along the chains. We show that while the dependence of the Hall and transverse conductivities on temperature and frequency are affected by the Luttinger interaction very strongly, the Hall resistivity is given by a simple formula corresponding to the noninteracting fermions. We compute the frequency, temperature and field dependence of the transverse conductivity. Consequences for the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductors are discussed.

Interchain conductivity of coupled Luttinger liquids and organic conductors

We reconsider the theory of dc and ac interchain conductivity in quasi-one dimensional systems. Our results are in good agreement with the measured c-axis optical conductivity of (TMTSF)_2{ClO}_4 and suggest that the c-axis dc-conductivity of (TMTSF)_2{PF}_6 in the 150K < T < 300Kd$ range is dominated by precursor effects of Mott localization. The crossover from a Luttinger liquid at high energy to a Fermi liquid at low energy is also addressed, within a dynamical mean-field theory. Implications for the inter-chain resistivity and Drude weight in the Fermi liquid regime are discussed.

Mean-Field Theory of a Quantum Heisenberg Spin Glass

A full mean field solution of a quantum Heisenberg spin glass model is presented in a large-N limit. A spin glass transition is found for all values of the spin S. The quantum critical regime associated with the quantum transition at S=0, and the various regimes in the spin glass phase at high spin are analyzed. The specific heat is shown to vanish linearly with temperature. In the spin-glass phase, intriguing connections between the equilibrium properties of the quantum problem and the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of classical models are pointed out.

Electronic correlations in transport through coupled quantum dots

The conductance through two quantum dots in series is studied using general qualitative arguments and quantitative slave-boson mean-field theory. It is demonstrated that measurements of the conductance can explore the phase diagram of the two-impurity Anderson model. Competition between the Kondo effect and the inter-dot magnetic exchange leads to a two-plateau structure in the conductance as a function of gate voltage and a two or three peak structure in the conductance vs. inter-dot tunneling.

Non-Fermi liquid regime of a doped Mott insulator

We study the doping of a Mott insulator in the presence of quenched frustrating disorder in the magnetic exchange. A low doping regime $δ<J/t$ is found, in which the quasiparticle coherent scale is low : $ε_F^* = J (δ/δ^*)^2$ with $δ^*=J/t$ (the ratio of typical exchange to hopping). In the ``quantum critical regime'' $ε_F^*<T<J$, several physical quantities display Marginal Fermi Liquid behaviour : NMR relaxation time $1/T_1\sim const.$, resistivity $ρ_{dc}(T) \propto T$, optical lifetime $τ_{opt}^{-1}\propto ω/\ln(ω/\epstar)$ and response functions obey $ω/T$ scaling, e.g. $J\sum_q χ''(q,ω) \propto \tanh (ω/2T)$. In contrast, single-electron properties display stronger deviations from Fermi liquid theory in this regime with a $\sqrtω$ dependence of the inverse single-particle lifetime and a $1/\sqrtω$ decay of the photoemission intensity. On the basis of this model and of various experimental evidence, it is argued that the proximity of a quantum critical point separating a glassy Mott-Anderson insulator from a metallic ground-state is an important ingredient in the physics of the normal state of cuprate superconductors (particularly the Zn-doped materials). In this picture the corresponding quantum critical regime is a ``slushy'' state of spins and holes with slow spin and charge dynamics responsible for the anomalous properties of the normal state.

Overscreened multi-channel SU(N) Kondo model : large-N solution and Conformal Field Theory

The multichannel Kondo model with SU(N) spin symmetry and SU(K) channel symmetry is considered. The impurity spin is chosen to transform as an antisymmetric representation of SU(N), corresponding to a fixed number of Abrikosov fermions $\sum_αf_α^{\dagger}f_α=Q$. For more than one channel (K>1), and all values of N and Q, the model displays non-Fermi behaviour associated with the overscreening of the impurity spin. Universal low-temperature thermodynamic and transport properties of this non-Fermi liquid state are computed using conformal field theory methods. A large-N limit of the model is then considered, in which K/N and Q/N are held fixed. Spectral densities satisfy coupled integral equations in this limit, corresponding to a (time-dependent) saddle-point. A low frequency, low-temperature analysis of these equations reveals universal scaling properties in the variable $ω/T$, also predicted from conformal invariance. The universal scaling form is obtained analytically and used to compute the low-temperature universal properties of the model in the large-N limit, such as the T=0 residual entropy and residual resistivity, and the critical exponents associated with the specific heat and susceptibility. The connections with the ``non-crossing approximation'' and the previous work of Cox and Ruckenstein are discussed.

Transition from overscreening to underscreening in the multichannel Kondo model: exact solution at large N

A novel large-N limit of the multichannel Kondo model is introduced, for representations of the impurity spin described by Schwinger bosons. Three cases are found, associated with underscreening, overscreening and exact Kondo screening of the impurity. The saddle-point equations derived in this limit are reminiscent of the ``non-crossing approximation'', but preserve the Fermi-liquid nature of the model in the exactly screened case. Several physical quantities are computed, both numerically, and analytically in the low-ω,T limit, and compared to other approaches.

Kondo Quartet

This article describes some recently obtained results on the low-energy properties of the "Kondo quartet" model of two spin-1/2 impurities interacting with two channels (flavours) of conduction electrons. We shall particularly emphasize the connections between conformal field-theory methods and bosonisation approaches, which are first illustrated on the example of the single-impurity, two-channel Kondo problem. This article is dedicated to the memory of Claude Itzykson, and will appear in the Proceedings of the Conference "Advanced Quantum Field Theory", held in La Londe Les Maures, Sept. 1996 (Nucl. Phys. B, Proc. Supp.; V.Rittenberg, J.Frölich and A.Schwimmer eds.).

Non Fermi Liquid Behaviour near a $T=0$ spin-glass transition

In this paper we study the competition between the Kondo effect and RKKY interactions near the zero-temperature quantum critical point of an Ising-like metallic spin-glass. We consider the mean-field behaviour of various physical quantities. In the `quantum- critical regime' non-analytic corrections to the Fermi liquid behaviour are found for the specific heat and uniform static susceptibility, while the resistivity and NMR relaxation rate have a non-Fermi liquid dependence on temperature.

Charge and spin density wave ordering transitions in strongly correlated metals

We study the quantum transition from a strongly correlated metal, with heavy fermionic quasiparticles, to a metal with commensurate charge or spin density wave order. To this end, we introduce and numerically analyze a large dimensionality model of Ising spins in a transverse field, coupled to two species of fermions; the analysis borrows heavily from recent progress in the solution of the Hubbard model in large dimensions. At low energies, the Ising order parameter fluctuations are characterized by the critical exponent $z ν= 1$, while above an energy scale, $Γ$, there is a crossover to $zν= 1/2$ criticality. We show that $Γ$ is of the order of the width of the heavy quasiparticle band, and can be made arbitrarily small for a correlated metal close to a Mott-Hubbard insulator. Therefore, such a correlated metal has a significant intermediate energy range of $zν=1/2$ behavior, a single particle spectrum with a narrow quasiparticle band, and well-formed analogs of the lower and upper Hubbard bands; we suggest that these features are intimately related in general.

Effect of a magnetic field on Mott-Hubbard systems

The effect of a magnetic field on Mott-Hubbard systems is investigated by studying the half-filled Hubbard model in the limit of infinite dimensions. A first-order metamagnetic transition between the strongly correlated metal and the Mott insulator is found for a critical value of the applied field. The field and temperature dependence of the magnetization, one-particle properties and susceptibility are studied and compared to the Gutzwiller approximation. The experimental relevance for transition-metal oxides and liquid $^{3}He$ is discussed.

On the Emery-Kivelson Solution of the two channel Kondo problem

We consider the two channel Kondo model in the Emery-Kivelson approach, and calculate the total susceptibility enhancement due to the impurity $χ_{imp}=χ-χ_{bulk}$. We find that $χ_{imp}$ exactly vanishes at the solvable point, in a completely analogous way to the singular part of the specific heat $C_{imp}$. A perturbative calculation around the solvable point yields the generic behaviour $χ_{imp} \sim \log {1 \over T}$, $C_{imp} \sim T\log T $ and the known universal value of the Wilson ratio $R_W={8 \over 3}$. From this calculation, the Kondo temperature can be identified and is found to behave as the inverse-square of the perturbation parameter. The small field, zero-temperature behaviour $χ_{imp}\sim log {1 \over h}$ is also recovered.

Superconductivity in the Two-Band Hubbard Model in Infinite Dimensions

We study a two-band Hubbard model in the limit of infinite dimensions, using a combination of analytical methods and Monte-Carlo techniques. The normal state is found to display various metal to insulators transitions as a function of doping and interaction strength. We derive self-consistent equations for the local Green's functions in the presence of superconducting long-range order, and extend previous algorithms to this case. We present direct numerical evidence that in a specific range of parameter space, the normal state is unstable against a superconducting state characterized by a strongly frequency dependent order-parameter.
