Relations de dépendance et intersections exceptionnelles (Dependence relations and exceptional intersections)

This text is devoted to the following result, stemming out works of Bombieri, Masser, Zannier, and Maurin: Let $X$ be an complex algebraic (projective, connected) curve and let us consider $n$ rational functions $f_1,...,f_n$ on $X$ which are multiplicatively independent. The points $x$ of $X$ where their values $f_1(x),...,f_n(x)$ satisfy at least two independent multiplicative dependence relations form a finite set. We discuss the conjectural generalizations of this theorem (Bombieri, Masser, Zannier; Zilber; Pink) concerning the finiteness of points of a $d$-dimensional subvariety $X$ of a semiabelian variety $G$ which belong to an algebraic subgroup of codimension $>d$ of $G$, their relations with theorems of Mordell-Lang or Manin-Mumford type, and, in the arithmetic case, recent results in this direction (Habegger; Rémond; Viada).

The Theorem of Jentzsch--Szegő on an analytic curve. Application to the irreducibility of truncations of power series

The theorem of Jentzsch--Szegő describes the limit measure of a sequence of discrete measures associated to the zeroes of a sequence of polynomials in one variable. Following the presentation of this result by Andrievskii and Blatt in their book, we extend this theorem to compact Riemann surfaces, then to analytic curves over an ultrametric field. The particular case of the projective line over an ultrametric field gives as corollaries information about the irreducibility of the truncations of a power series in one variable.

This survey article is about algebraic dynamics. It is mainly concerned by the arithmetic equidistribution theorems featured by dynamical systems. The contents are: - heights - algebraic dynamics, conjectures - equidistribution theorem on the projective line (after Bilu and Baker). It was written for the sesion 2006 of États de la recherche, Systèmes dynamiques polynomiaux.

Lectures on height zeta functions: At the confluence of algebraic geometry, algebraic number theory, and analysis

This is a survey on the theory of height zeta functions, written on the occasion of a French-Japanese winter school, held in Miura (Kanagawa, Japan) in Jan. 2008. It does not presuppose much knowledge in algebraic geometry. The last chapter of the survey explains recent results obtained in collaboration with Yuri Tschinkel concerning asymptotics of volumes of height balls in analytic geometry over local fields, or in adelic spaces.

This paper is an introduction to the dynamics of rational fractions over a p-adic field. It follows the lectures that Jean-Christophe Yoccoz gave during the États de la recherche in May 2006, and develops certain points. Most of the results to be explained here are due to Benedetto, Bézivin, Hsia, Lubin, Morton, Rivera-Letelier and Silverman.

Igusa integrals and volume asymptotics in analytic and adelic geometry

We establish asymptotic formulae for volumes of height balls in analytic varieties over local fields and in adelic points of algebraic varieties over number fields, relating the Mellin transforms of height functions to Igusa integrals and to global geometric invariants of the underlying variety. In the adelic setting, this involves the construction of general Tamagawa measures.

Analytic curves in algebraic varieties over number fields

We establish algebraicity criteria for formal germs of curves in algebraic varieties over number fields and apply them to derive a rationality criterion for formal germs of functions, which extends the classical rationality theorems of Borel-Dwork and Pólya-Bertrandias valid over the projective line to arbitrary algebraic curves over a number field. The formulation and the proof of these criteria involve some basic notions in Arakelov geometry, combined with complex and rigid analytic geometry (notably, potential theory over complex and $p$-adic curves). We also discuss geometric analogues, pertaining to the algebraic geometry of projective surfaces, of these arithmetic criteria.

Mesures de Mahler et équidistribution logarithmique

Let X be a projective integral normal scheme over a number field F; let L be a ample line bundle on X together with a semi-positive adelic metric in the sense of Zhang. The main results of this article are 1) A formula which computes the height (relative to L) of a Cartier divisor D on X as generalized "Mahler measures", i.e. by integrating Green functions for D against measures attached to L. 2) a theorem of equidistribution of points of "small" height valid for functions with logarithmic singularities along a divisor D, provided the height of D is "minimal". In the context of algebraic dynamics, "small" means of height converging to 0, and "minimal" means height 0.

The number of solutions in finite fields of a system of polynomial equations obeys a very strong regularity, reflected for example by the rationality of the zeta function of an algebraic variety defined over a finite field, or the modularity of Hasse-Weil's $L$-function of an elliptic curve over $\Q$. Since two decades, efficient methods have been invented to compute effectively this number of solutions, notably in view of cryptographic applications. This exposé presents some of these methods, generally relying on the use of Lefshetz's trace formula in an adequate cohomology theory and discusses their respective advantages.

The proof by Ullmo and Zhang of Bogomolov's conjecture about points of small height in abelian varieties made a crucial use of an equidistribution property for ``small points'' in the associated complex abelian variety. We study the analogous equidistribution property at $p$-adic places. Our results can be conveniently stated within the framework of the analytic spaces defined by Berkovich. The first one is valid in any dimension but is restricted to ``algebraic metrics'', the second one is valid for curves, but allows for more general metrics, in particular to the normalized heights with respect to dynamical systems.

(On the fundamental group of rationnally connected varieties.) I show that the fundamental group of a normal variety which is rationally chain connected is finite. The proof holds in non-zero characteristic.

In this talk, I report on three theorems concerning algebraic varieties over a field of characteristic $p>0$. a) over a finite field of cardinal $q$, two proper smooth varieties which are geometrically birational have the same number of rational points modulo $q$ (cf. Ekedahl, 1983). b) over a finite field of cardinal $q$, a proper smooth variety which is rationally chain connected, or Fano, or weakly unirational, has a number of rational points congruent to 1 modulo $q$ (Esnault, 2003). c) over an algebraic closed field of caracteristic $p>0$, the fundamental group of a proper smooth variety which is rationally chain connected, or Fano, or weakly unirational, is a finite group of order prime to $p$ (cf. Ekedahl, 1983). The common feature of the proofs is a control of the $p$-adic valuations of Frobenius and is best explained within the framework of Berthelot's rigid cohomology. I also explain its relevant properties.

Théorèmes d'algébrisation en géométrie diophantienne (Algebricity theorems in diophantine geometry)

In a recent paper, J.-B. Bost establishes a criterion for certain ``formal subvarieties'' of algebraic varieties to be algebraic. His theorem unifies and generalizes results of Chudnovsky's and Y. André, motivated by an arithmetic conjecture of Grothendieck that predicts that the solutions of certain differential equations are algebraic functions. The proof makes use of the diophantine approximation techniques introduced by these authors but with a systematic geometric point of view, notably via Arakelov geometry and the formalism of ``slopes''.

We propose a construction of Hurwitz stacks and give some properties of them, most of which are consequences of SGA 1. Some applications of arithmetic flavor are then deduced.

Fonctions zêta des hauteurs des espaces fibrés

This paper is devoted to the estimation of the number of points of bounded height on fibrations in toric varieties over algebraic varieties, generalizing previous work by Strauch and the second author. Under reasonable hypotheses on ``Arakelov L-functions'' of the base, we show how to deduce a good estimate for the open subset of the total space of the unerlying fibration in torus. In passing, we improve drastically the error term for toric varieties themselves, generalizing a theorem by de la Breteche over any number field.
