Identifying Partitions with maximum commuting orbit $Q=(u,u-r)$

The authors here show that the partition $P_{k,l}(Q)$ in the table $\mathcal T(Q)$ of partitions having maximal nilpotent commutator a given stable partition $Q$, defined in [IKVZ2], is identical to the analogous partition $P_{k,l}^Q$ defined by the authors in [BIK] using the Burge correspondence.

Jordan Type stratification of spaces of commuting nilpotent matrices

An $n\times n$ nilpotent matrix $B$ is determined up to conjugacy by a partition $P_B$ of $n$, its Jordan type given by the sizes of its Jordan blocks. The Jordan type $\mathfrak D(P)$ of a nilpotent matrix in the dense orbit of the nilpotent commutator of a given nilpotent matrix of Jordan type $P$ is stable - has parts differing pairwise by at least two - and was determined by R. Basili. The second two authors, with B. Van Steirteghem and R. Zhao determined a rectangular table of partitions $\mathfrak D^{-1}(Q)$ having a given stable partition $Q$ as the Jordan type of its maximum nilpotent commutator. They proposed a box conjecture, that would generalize the answer to stable partitions $Q$ having $\ell$ parts: it was proven recently by J.~Irving, T. Ko\v{s}ir and M. Mastnak. Using this result and also some tropical calculations, the authors here determine equations defining the loci of each partition in $\mathfrak D^{-1}(Q)$, when $Q$ is stable with two parts. The equations for each locus form a complete intersection. The authors propose a conjecture generalizing their result to arbitrary stable $Q$.

Jordan degree type for codimension three Gorenstein algebras of small Sperner number

The Jordan type $P_{A,\ell}$ of a linear form $\ell$ acting on a graded Artinian algebra $A$ over a field $\sf k$ is the partition describing the Jordan block decomposition of the multiplication map $m_\ell$, which is nilpotent. The Jordan degree type $\mathcal S_{A,\ell}$ is a finer invariant, describing also the initial degrees of the simple submodules of $A$ in a decomposition of $A$ as ${\sf k}[\ell]$-modules. The set of Jordan types of $A$ or Jordan degree types (JDT) of $A$ as $\ell$ varies, is an invariant of the algebra. This invariant has been studied for codimension two graded algebras. We here extend the previous results to certain codimension three graded Artinian Gorenstein (AG) algebras - those of small Sperner number. Given a Gorenstein sequence $T$ - one possible for the Hilbert function of a codimension three AG algebra - the irreducible variety $\mathrm{Gor}(T)$ parametrizes all Gorenstein algebras of Hilbert function $T$. We here completely determine the JDT possible for all pairs $(A,\ell), A\in \mathrm{Gor}(T)$, for Gorenstein sequences $T$ of the form $T=(1,3,s^k,3,1)$ for Sperner number $s=3,4,5$ and arbitrary multiplicity $k$. For $s=6$ we delimit the prospective JDT, without verifying that each occurs.

Jordan type of an Artinian algebra, a survey

We consider Artinian algebras $A$ over a field $\mathsf{k}$, both graded and local algebras. The Lefschetz properties of graded Artinian algebras have been long studied, but more recently the Jordan type invariant of a pair $(\ell,A)$ where $\ell$ is an element of the maximal ideal of $A$, has been introduced. The Jordan type gives the sizes of the Jordan blocks for multiplication by $\ell$ on $A$, and it is a finer invariant than the pair $(\ell,A)$ being strong or weak Lefschetz. The Jordan degree type for a graded Artinian algebra adds to the Jordan type the initial degree of ``strings'' in the decomposition of $A$ as a $\mathsf{k}[\ell]$ module. We here give a brief survey of Jordan type for Artinian algebras, Jordan degree type for graded Artinian algebras, and related invariants for local Artinian algebras, with a focus on recent work and open problems.

Hilbert functions and Jordan type of Perazzo Artinian algebras

We study Hilbert functions, Lefschetz properties, and Jordan type of Artinian Gorenstein algebras associated to Perazzo hypersurfaces in projective space. The main focus lies on Perazzo threefolds, for which we prove that the Hilbert functions are always unimodal. Further we prove that the Hilbert function determines whether the algebra is weak Lefschetz, and we characterize those Hilbert functions for which the weak Lefschetz property holds. By example, we verify that the Hilbert functions of Perazzo fourfolds are not always unimodal. In the particular case of Perazzo threefolds with the smallest possible Hilbert function, we give a description of the possible Jordan types for multiplication by any linear form.

Limits of graded Gorenstein algebras of Hilbert function $(1,3^k,1)$

Let $R={\sf k}[x,y,z]$, the polynomial ring over a field $\sf k$. Several of the authors previously classified nets of ternary conics and their specializations over an algebraically closed field. We here show that when $\sf k$ is algebraically closed, and the Hilbert function sequence $T=(1,3^k,1), k\ge 2$ (i.e. $T=(1,3,3,\ldots,3,1)$ where $k$ is the multiplicity of $3$) then the family $G_T$ parametrizing graded Artinian algebra quotients $A=R/I$ of $R$ having Hilbert function $T$ is irreducible, and $G_T$ is the closure of the family $\mathrm{Gor}(T)$ of Artinian Gorenstein algebras of Hilbert function $T$. We then classify up to isomorphism the elements of these families $\mathrm{Gor}(T)$ and of $G_T$. Finally, we give examples of codimension three Gorenstein sequences, such as $(1,3,5,3,1)$, for which $G_T$ has several irreducible components, one being the Zariski closure of $\mathrm{Gor}(T)$.

Log-concave Gorenstein sequences

We show here that codimension three Artinian Gorenstein sequences are log-concave, and that there are codimension four Artinian Gorenstein sequences that are not log-concave. We also show that all level sequences in codimension two, and every compressed level Hilbert function in any codimension is log-concave.

Lefschetz properties of some codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebras

Codimension two Artinian algebras $A$ have the strong and weak Lefschetz properties provided the characteristic is zero or greater than the socle degree. It is open to what extent such results might extend to codimension three AG algebras - the most promising results so far have concerned the weak Lefschetz property for such algebras. We here show that every standard-graded codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ having low maximum value of the Hilbert function - at most six - has the strong Lefschetz property, provided that the characteristic is zero. When the characteristic is greater than the socle degree of $A$, we show that $A$ is almost strong Lefschetz. This quite modest result is nevertheless arguably the most encompassing so far concerning the strong Lefschetz property for graded codimension three AG algebras.

Reducibility of a family of local Artinian Gorenstein algebras

The Jordan type of an Artinian algebra is the Jordan block partition associated to multiplication by a generic element of the maximal ideal. We study the Jordan type for Artinian Gorenstein (AG) local algebras A, and the interaction of Jordan type with the symmetric decomposition of the Hilbert function H(A). We give examples of Gorenstein sequences H for which the family Gor(H) of AG algebras having Hilbert function H has several irreducible components, each corresponding to a symmetric decomposition of H. The component structure results from the intersection of two opposing filtrations of the family Gor(H) of AG algebras: that by Jordan type satisfies the usual dominance property; the second filtration, by symmetric decomposition, satisfies a known semicontinuity property. Our examples are in codimension three -- the lowest codimension of such an example, as Gor(H) is irreducible in codimension two.

Nets of Conics and associated Artinian algebras of length 7

We classify the orbits of nets of conics under the action of the projective linear group and we determine the specializations of these orbits, using geometric and algebraic methods. We study related geometric questions, as the parametrization of planar cubics. We show that Artinian algebras of Hilbert function H=(1,3,3,0) determined by nets, can be smoothed - deformed to a direct sum of fields; and that algebras of Hilbert function H=(1,r,2,0), determined by pencils of quadrics, can also be smoothed. In a Historical Appendix A we describe related work prior to 1977. In an Update Appendix B we survey some developments since 1977 concerning nets of conics, related geometry, and deformations of Artinian algebras of small length.

Cohomological Blow Ups of Graded Artinian Gorenstein Algebras Along Surjective Maps

We introduce the cohomological blow up of a graded Artinian Gorenstein (AG) algebra along a surjective map, which we term BUG (Blow Up Gorenstein) for short. This is intended to translate to an algebraic context the cohomology ring of a blow up of a projective manifold along a projective submanifold. We show, among other things, that a BUG is a connected sum, that it is the general fiber in a flat family of algebras, and that it preserves the strong Lefschetz property. We also show that standard graded compressed algebras are rarely BUGs, and we classify those BUGs that are complete intersections. We have included many examples throughout this manuscript.

Number of generators of ideals in Jordan cells of the family of graded Artinian algebras of height two

We let $A=R/I$ be a standard graded Artinian algebra quotient of $R={\sf k}[x,y]$, the polynomial ring in two variables over a field ${\sf k}$ by an ideal $I$, and let $n$ be its vector space dimension. The Jordan type $P_\ell$ of a linear form $\ell\in A_1$ is the partition of $n$ determining the Jordan block decomposition of the multiplication on $A$ by $\ell$ -- which is nilpotent. The first three authors previously determined which partitions of $n=\dim_{\sf k}A$ may occur as the Jordan type for some linear form $\ell$ on a graded complete intersection Artinian quotient $A=R/(f,g)$ of $R$, and they counted the number of such partitions for each complete intersection Hilbert function $T$ arXiv:1810.00716.\par We here consider the family $\mathrm{G}_T$ of graded Artinian quotients $A=R/I$ of $R={\sf k}[x,y]$, having arbitrary Hilbert function $H(A)=T$. The Jordan cell $\mathbb V(E_P)$ corresponding to a partition $P$ having diagonal lengths $T$ is comprised of all ideals $I$ in $R$ whose initial ideal is the monomial ideal $E_P$ determined by $P$. These cells give a decomposition of the variety $\mathrm{G}_T$ into affine spaces. We determine the generic number $\kappa(P)$ of generators for the ideals in each cell $\mathbb V(E_P)$, generalizing a result of arXiv:1810.00716. In particular, we determine those partitions for which $\kappa(P)=\kappa(T)$, the generic number of generators for an ideal defining an algebra $A$ in $\mathrm{G}_T$. We also count the number of partitions $P$ of diagonal lengths $T$ having a given $\kappa(P)$. A main tool is a combinatorial and geometric result allowing us to split $T$ and any partition $P$ of diagonal lengths $T$ into simpler $T_i$ and partitions $P_i$, such that $\mathbb V(E_P)$ is the product of the cells $\mathbb V(E_{P_i})$, and $T_i$ is single-block: $\mathrm{G}_{T_i}$ is a Grassmannian.

Connected Sums of Graded Artinian Gorenstein Algebras and Lefschetz Properties

A connected sum construction for local rings was introduced in a paper by H. Ananthnarayan, L. Avramov, and W.F. Moore. In the graded Artinian Gorenstein case, this can be viewed as an algebraic analogue of the topological construction of the same name. We give two alternative description of this algebraic connected sum: the first uses algebraic analogues of Thom classes of vector bundles and Gysin homomorphisms, the second is in terms of Macaulay dual generators. We also investigate the extent to which the connected sum construction preserves the weak or strong Lefschetz property, thus providing new classes of rings which satisfy these properties.

Symmetric Decomposition of the Associated Graded Algebra of an Artinian Gorenstein Algebra

We study the symmetric subquotient decomposition of the associated graded algebras $A^*$ of a non-homogeneous commutative Artinian Gorenstein (AG) algebra $A$. This decomposition arises from the stratification of $A^*$ by a sequence of ideals $A^*=C_A(0)\supset C_A(1)\supset\cdots$ whose successive quotients $Q(a)=C(a)/C(a+1)$ are reflexive $A^*$ modules. These were introduced by the first author, and have been used more recently by several groups, especially those interested in short Gorenstein algebras, and in the scheme length (cactus rank) of forms. For us a Gorenstein sequence is an integer sequence $H$ occurring as the Hilbert function for an AG algebra $A$, that is not necessarily homogeneous. Such a Hilbert function $H(A)$ is the sum of symmetric non-negative sequences $H_A(a)=H(Q_A(a))$, each having center of symmetry $(j-a)/2$ where $j$ is the socle degree of $A$: we call these the symmetry conditions, and the decomposition $\mathcal{D}(A)=(H_A(0),H_A(1),\ldots)$ the symmetric decomposition of $H(A)$. We here study which sequences may occur as the summands $H_A(a)$: in particular we construct in a systematic way examples of AG algebras $A$ for which $H_A(a)$ can have interior zeroes, as $H_A(a)=(0,s,0,\ldots,0,s,0)$. We also study the symmetric decomposition sets $\mathcal{D}(A)$, and in particular determine which sequences $H_A(a)$ can be non-zero when the dual generator is linear in a subset of the variables. Several groups have studied "exotic summands" of the Macaulay dual generator $F$. Studying these, we recall a normal form for the Macaulay dual generator of an AG algebra that has no "exotic" summands. We apply this to Gorenstein algebras that are connected sums. We give throughout many examples and counterexamples, and conclude with some open questions about symmetric decomposition.

Complete intersection Jordan types in height two

We determine every Jordan type partition that occurs as the Jordan block decomposition for the multiplication map by a linear form in a height two homogeneous complete intersection (CI) Artinian algebra $A$ over an algebraically closed field $\sf k$ of characteristic zero or large enough. We show that these CI Jordan type partitions are those satisfying specific numerical conditions; also, given the Hilbert function $H(A)$, they are completely determined by which higher Hessians of $A$ vanish at the point corresponding to the linear form. We also show new combinatorial results about such partitions, and in particular we give ways to construct them from a branch label or hook code, showing how branches are attached to a fundamental triangle to form the Ferrers graph.

Free extensions and Lefschetz properties, with an application to rings of relative coinvariants

Graded Artinian algebras can be regarded as algebraic analogues of cohomology rings (in even degrees) of compact topological manifolds. In this analogy, a free extension of a base ring with a fiber ring corresponds to a fiber bundle over a manifold. For rings, as with manifolds, it is a natural question to ask: to what extent do properties of the base and the fiber carry over to the extension? For example, if the base and fiber both satisfy a strong Lefschetz property, can we conclude the same for the extension? Or, more generally, can one determine the generic Jordan type for the extension given the generic Jordan types of the base and fiber? We address these questions using the relative coinvariant rings as prototypical models. We show that if $V$ is a vector space and if the subgroup $W$ of the general linear group Gl(V), is a non-modular finite reflection group and $K\subset W$ is a non parabolic reflection subgroup, then the relative coinvariant ring $R^K_W$ cannot have a linear element of strong Lefschetz Jordan type. However, we give examples where these rings $R^K_W$, some with non-unimodal Hilbert functions, nevertheless have (non-homogeneous) elements of strong Lefschetz Jordan type. Some of these examples give rise to open questions concerning Lefschetz properties of certain algebras $A(m,n)$, related to combinatorial questions proposed and partially answered by G. Almqvist.

Artinian Gorenstein algebras that are free extensions over ${\sf k}[t]/(t^n)$, and Macaulay duality

T. Harima and J. Watanabe studied the Lefschetz properties of free extension Artinian algebras $C$ over a base $A$ with fibre $B$. The free extensions are deformations of the usual tensor product, when $C$ is also Gorenstein, so are $A$ and $B$, and it is natural to ask for the relation among the Macaulay dual generators for the algebras. Writing a dual generator $F$ for $C$ as a homogeneous "polynomial" in $T$ and the dual variables for $B$, and given the dual generator for $B$, we give sufficient conditions on $F$ that ensure that $C$ is a free extension of $A={\sf k}[t]/(t^n)$ with fiber $B$. We give examples that explore the sharpness of the statements. We also consider a special set of coinvariant algebras $C$ which are free extensions of $A$, but which do not satisfy the sufficient conditions of our main result.

Free Extensions and Jordan type

Free extensions of commutative Artinian algebras were introduced by T. Harima and J. Watanabe. The Jordan type of a multiplication map $m$ by a nilpotent element of an Artinian algebra is the partition determining the sizes of the blocks in a Jordan matrix for $m$. We show that a free extension of the Artinian algebra $A$ with fibre $B$ is a deformation of the usual tensor product. This has consequences for the generic Jordan types of $A,B$ and $C$, showing that the Jordan type of $C$ is at least that of the usual tensor product in the dominance order. We give applications to algebras of relative coinvariants of linear group actions on a polynomial ring.
