Hierarchical Coded Gradient Aggregation Based on Layered MDS Codes

The growing privacy concerns and the communication costs associated with transmitting raw data have resulted in techniques like federated learning, where the machine learning models are trained at the edge nodes, and the parameter updates are shared with a central server. Because communications from the edge nodes are often unreliable, a hierarchical setup involving intermediate helper nodes is considered. The communication links between the edges and the helper nodes are error-prone and are modeled as straggling/failing links. To overcome the issue of link failures, coding techniques are proposed. The edge nodes communicate encoded versions of the model updates to the helper nodes, which pass them on to the master after suitable aggregation. The primary work in this area uses repetition codes and Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) codes at the edge nodes to arrive at the Aligned Repetition Coding (ARC) and Aligned MDS Coding (AMC) schemes, respectively. We propose using vector codes, specifically a family of layered MDS codes parameterized by a variable $\nu$, at the edge nodes. For the proposed family of codes, suitable aggregation strategies at the helper nodes are also developed. At the extreme values of $\nu$, our scheme matches the communication costs incurred by the ARC and AMC schemes, resulting in a graceful transition between these schemes.

Extraordinary electrical conductance through amorphous non-conducting polymers under vibrational strong coupling

Achieving electrical conductance in amorphous non-doped polymers is a challenging task. Here, we show that vibrational strong coupling of the aromatic C-H(D) out-of-plane bending modes of polystyrene, deuterated polystyrene, and poly (benzyl methacrylate) to the vacuum electromagnetic field of the cavity enhance the electrical conductivity by at least six orders of magnitude compared to the uncoupled polymers. The conductance is thermally activated at the onset of strong coupling. It becomes temperature and cavity path length independent at the highest coupling strengths, giving rise to the extraordinary electrical conductance in these polymers. The electrical characterizations are performed without external light excitation, demonstrating the role of quantum light in enhancing the long-range coherent transport even in amorphous non-conducting polymers.

An Optimal Decentralized Multi-access Coded Caching System

In this paper, we consider a multi-access coded caching system with decentralized prefetching, where a server hosts $N$ files, each of size $F$ bits, and is connected to $K$ users through a shared link. There are $c$ caches distributed across the network and each of the $K$ users connects to a random set of $r\leq c$ caches. Initially, we consider the model in which each of the cache subsets is accessed by exactly a specific number of users. For this model, a novel linear delivery scheme is introduced, using which the closed-form expression for the per-user delivery rate is computed. Furthermore, using techniques from index coding, the optimality of the proposed linear delivery scheme among all linear delivery schemes is proved. The results of the decentralized shared caching and conventional decentralized caching schemes are recovered as special cases of the proposed model. The model is further generalized by allowing each cache subset to serve any number of users. This enhances the flexibility of the system, enabling it to accommodate any arbitrary number of users. A delivery scheme is proposed for the generalized model and is shown to be optimal for certain user-to-cache associations.

Role of spin-phonon and electron-phonon interactions in phonon renormalization of (Eu$_{1-x}$Bi$_x$)$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ across the metal-insulator phase transition: Temperature-dependent Raman and X-ray studies

We report temperature-dependent Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction studies of pyrochlore iridates, (Eu$_{1-x}$Bi$_x$)$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, for x=0, 0.02, 0.035, 0.05 and 0.1. The temperature variation in Raman experiments spans from 4 K to 300 K, covering the metal-insulator phase transition accompanied by paramagnetic to all-in/all-out (AIAO) spin ordering (T$_N$). These systems also show a Weyl semi-metal (WSM) phase at low temperatures (below ~50 K). We show that the Ir-O-Ir bond bending mode, A$_{1g}$ (510 cm$^{-1}$), shows anomalous softening in the magnetically ordered AIAO state, arising primarily from the spin-phonon interaction due to the phonon-modulation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) spin-exchange interaction. The two stretching modes, T$_{2g}^1$ (307 cm$^{-1}$) and T$_{2g}^2$ (382 cm$^{-1}$) harden significantly in the magnetic insulating phase. The T$_{2g}$ phonons also show anomalous temperature dependence of their mode frequencies, hitherto unreported, due to strong electron-phonon coupling. The signatures of the WSM state are observed in phonon renormalization below 50 K due to strong electron-phonon interaction. Our experimental results establish strong magneto-elastic coupling below T$_N$ and significant electron-phonon interactions in the metallic phase above T$_N$ as well as in the low-temperature WSM state.

Coded Gradient Aggregation: A Tradeoff Between Communication Costs at Edge Nodes and at Helper Nodes

The increasing amount of data generated at the edge/client nodes and the privacy concerns have resulted in learning at the edge, in which the computations are performed at edge devices and are communicated to a central node for updating the model. The edge nodes have low bandwidth and may be available only intermittently. There are helper nodes present in the network that aid the edge nodes in the communication to the server. The edge nodes communicate the local gradient to helper nodes which relay these messages to the central node after possible aggregation. Recently, schemes using repetition codes and maximum-distance-separable (MDS) codes, respectively known as Aligned MDS Coding (AMC) scheme and Aligend Repetition Coding (ARC) scheme, were proposed. It was observed that in AMC scheme the communication between edge nodes and helper nodes is optimal but with an increased cost of communication between helper and master. An upper bound on the communication cost between helpers and master was obtained. In this paper, a tradeoff between communication costs at edge nodes and helper nodes is established with the help of pyramid codes, a well-known class of locally repairable codes. The communication costs at both the helper nodes and edge nodes are exactly characterized. Using the developed technique, the exact communication cost at helper nodes can be computed for the scheme using MDS codes. In the end, we provide two improved aggregation strategies for the existing AMC and ARC schemes, yielding significant reduction in communication cost at helpers, without changing any of the code parameters.

Large Enhancement of Ferro-Magnetism under Collective Strong Coupling of YBCO Nanoparticles

Light-matter strong coupling in the vacuum limit has been shown to enhance material properties over the past decade. Oxide nanoparticles are known to exhibit weak ferromagnetism due to vacancies in the lattice. Here we report the 700-fold enhancement of the ferromagnetism of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ nanoparticles under cooperative strong coupling at room temperature. The magnetic moment reaches 0.90 $\mu_{\rm B}$/mol, and with such a high value, it competes with YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ superconductivity at low temperature. This strong ferromagnetism at room temperature suggest that strong coupling is a new tool for the development of next generations of magnetic and spintronic nanodevices.

Exploring Superconductivity under Strong Coupling with the Vacuum Electromagnetic Field

Light-matter interactions have generated considerable interest as a means to manipulate material properties. Light-induced superconductivity has been demonstrated using pulsed lasers. An attractive alternative possibility is to exploit strong light-matter interactions arising by coupling phonons to the vacuum electromagnetic field of a cavity mode as has been suggested and theoretically studied. Here we explore this possibility for two very different superconductors, namely YBCO (YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$) and Rb$_3$C$_{60}$, coupled to surface plasmon polaritons, using a novel cooperative effect based on the presence of a strongly coupled vibrational environment allowing efficient dressing of the otherwise weakly coupled phonon bands of these compounds. By placing the superconductor-surface plasmon system in a SQUID magnetometer, we find that the superconducting transition temperatures ($T_{c}$) for both compounds are modified in the absence of any external laser field. For YBCO, $T_{c}$ decreases from 92 K to 86 K while for Rb$_3$C$_{60}$, it increases from 30 K to 45 K at normal pressures. In the latter case, a simple theoretical framework is provided to understand these results based on an enhancement of the electron-phonon coupling. This proof-of-principle study opens a new tool box to not only modify superconducting materials but also to understand the mechanistic details of different superconductors.

An Optimal Linear Error Correcting Delivery Scheme for Coded Caching with Shared Caches

Classical coded caching setting avails each user to have one dedicated cache. This is generalized to a more general shared cache scheme and the exact expression for the worst case rate was derived in [E. Parrinello, A. Unsal, P. Elia, "Fundamental Limits of Caching in Heterogeneous Networks with Uncoded Prefetching," available on arXiv:1811.06247 [cs.IT], Nov. 2018]. For this case, an optimal linear error correcting delivery scheme is proposed and an expression for the peak rate is established for the same. Furthermore, a new delivery scheme is proposed, which gives an improved rate for the case when the demands are not distinct.

Optimal Error Correcting Delivery Scheme for an Optimal Coded Caching Scheme with Small Buffers

Optimal delivery scheme for coded caching problems with small buffer sizes and the number of users no less than the amount of files in the server was proposed by Chen, Fan and Letaief ["Fundamental limits of caching: improved bounds for users with small buffers," (IET Communications), 2016]. This scheme is referred to as the CFL scheme. In this paper, the link between the server and the users is assumed to be error prone only during the delivery phase. Closed form expressions for average rate and peak rate of error correcting delivery scheme for CFL prefetching scheme is obtained. An optimal error correcting delivery scheme for caching problems employing CFL prefetching is proposed.

Optimal Error Correcting Delivery Scheme for Coded Caching with Symmetric Batch Prefetching

Coded caching is used to reduce network congestion during peak hours. A single server is connected to a set of users through a bottleneck link, which generally is assumed to be error-free. During non-peak hours, all the users have full access to the files and they fill their local cache with portions of the files available. During delivery phase, each user requests a file and the server delivers coded transmissions to meet the demands taking into consideration their cache contents. In this paper we assume that the shared link is error prone. A new delivery scheme is required to meet the demands of each user even after receiving finite number of transmissions in error. We characterize the minimum average rate and minimum peak rate for this problem. We find closed form expressions of these rates for a particular caching scheme namely \textit{symmetric batch prefetching}. We also propose an optimal error correcting delivery scheme for coded caching problem with symmetric batch prefetching.

Generalized Index Coding Problem and Discrete Polymatroids

The index coding problem has been generalized recently to accommodate receivers which demand functions of messages and which possess functions of messages. The connections between index coding and matroid theory have been well studied in the recent past. Index coding solutions were first connected to multi linear representation of matroids. For vector linear index codes discrete polymatroids which can be viewed as a generalization of the matroids was used. It was shown that a vector linear solution to an index coding problem exists if and only if there exists a representable discrete polymatroid satisfying certain conditions. In this work we explore the connections between generalized index coding and discrete polymatroids. The conditions that needs to be satisfied by a representable discrete polymatroid for a generalized index coding problem to have a vector linear solution is established. From a discrete polymatroid we construct an index coding problem with coded side information and shows that if the index coding problem has a certain optimal length solution then the discrete polymatroid satisfies certain properties. From a matroid we construct a similar generalized index coding problem and shows that the index coding problem has a binary scalar linear solution of optimal length if and only if the matroid is binary representable.

Vector Linear Error Correcting Index Codes and Discrete Polymatroids

The connection between index coding and matroid theory have been well studied in the recent past. El Rouayheb et al. established a connection between multi linear representation of matroids and wireless index coding. Muralidharan and Rajan showed that a vector linear solution to an index coding problem exists if and only if there exists a representable discrete polymatroid satisfying certain conditions. Recently index coding with erroneous transmission was considered by Dau et al.. Error correcting index codes in which all receivers are able to correct a fixed number of errors was studied. In this paper we consider a more general scenario in which each receiver is able to correct a desired number of errors, calling such index codes differential error correcting index codes. We show that vector linear differential error correcting index code exists if and only if there exists a representable discrete polymatroid satisfying certain conditions

Optimal Index Coding with Min-Max Probability of Error over Fading Channels

An index coding scheme in which the source (transmitter) transmits binary symbols over a wireless fading channel is considered. Index codes with the transmitter using minimum number of transmissions are known as optimal index codes. Different optimal index codes give different performances in terms of probability of error in a fading environment and this also varies from receiver to receiver. In this paper we deal with optimal index codes which minimizes the maximum probability of error among all the receivers. We identify a criterion for optimal index codes that minimizes the maximum probability of error among all the receivers. For a special class of index coding problems, we give an algorithm to identify optimal index codes which minimize the maximum error probability. We illustrate our techniques and claims with simulation results leading to conclude that a careful choice among the optimal index codes will give a considerable gain in fading channels.
