On two families of iterative methods without memory

We study two natural families of methods of order $n\ge 2$ that are useful for solving numerically one variable equations $f(x)=0.$ The first family consists on the methods that depend on $x,f(x)$ and its successive derivatives up to $f^{(n-1)}(x)$ and the second family comprises methods that depend on $x,g(x)$ until $g^{\circ n}(x),$ where $g^{\circ m}(x)=g(g^{\circ (m-1)}(x))$ and $g(x)=f(x)+x$. The first family includes the well-known Newton, Chebyshev, and Halley methods, while the second one contains the Steffensen method. Although the results for the first type of methods are well known and classical, we provide new, simple, detailed, and self-contained proofs.

Entropy and {\omega}-limit sets on invariant graphs for a class of planar piecewise linear maps

We consider the family of piecewise linear maps $F(x,y)=\left(|x| - y + a, x - |y| + b\right),$ where $(a,b)\in \mathbb{R}^2$. In previous work, we identified that certain maps of this class possess one-dimensional invariant sets, planar graphs, that capture the global dynamics of the system. Within these graphs, chaotic dynamics emerge for certain parameter values, leading to an intermediate dynamical regime between regular behavior and full-plane chaos. In the present study, we revisit this family and analyze in detail the topological entropy as a function of a bifurcation parameter, finding that transitions from positive to zero entropy are continuous for certain parameter values and discontinuous for others. We also provide a methodology for determining arbitrarily sharp rational bounds for the bifurcation values at which this transition occurs. Finally, motivated by the limitations of numerical simulations in detecting the complex dynamics within these graphs, we prove that for some parameter values, there exists a full-measure set in these graphs where orbits converge to at most three omega-limit sets, which, when the parameter values are rational, correspond to periodic orbits.

Invariant graphs and dynamics of a family of continuous piecewise linear planar maps

We consider the family of piecewise linear maps $$F_{a,b}(x,y)=\left(|x| - y + a, x - |y| + b\right),$$ where $(a,b)\in \mathbb{R}^2$. This family belongs to a wider one that has deserved some interest in the recent years as it provides a framework for generalized Lozi-type maps. Among our results, we prove that for $a\ge 0$ all the orbits are eventually periodic and moreover that there are at most three different periodic behaviors formed by at most seven points. For $a<0$ we prove that for each $b\in\mathbb{R}$ there exists a compact graph $\Gamma,$ which is invariant under the map $F$, such that for each $(x,y)\in \mathbb{R}^2$ there exists $n\in\mathbb{N}$ (that may depend on $x$) such that $F_{a,b}^n(x,y)\in \Gamma.$ We give explicitly all these invariant graphs and we characterize the dynamics of the map restricted to the corresponding graph for all $(a,b)\in\mathbb{R}^2$ obtaining, among other results, a full characterization of when $F_{a,b}|_{\Gamma}$ has positive or zero entropy.

On some rational piecewise linear rotations

We study the dynamics of the piecewise planar rotations $F_{\lambda}(z)=\lambda (z-H(z)), $ with $z\in\C$, $H(z)=1$ if $\mathrm{Im}(z)\ge0,$ $H(z)=-1$ if $\mathrm{Im}(z)<0,$ and $\lambda=\mathrm{e}^{i \alpha} \in\C$, being $\alpha$ a rational multiple of $\pi$. Our main results establish the dynamics in the so called regular set, which is the complementary of the closure of the set formed by the preimages of the discontinuity line. We prove that any connected component of this set is open, bounded and periodic under the action of $F_\lambda$, with a period $\ell,$ that depends on the connected component. Furthermore, $F_\lambda^\ell $ restricted to each component acts as a rotation with a period which also depends on the connected component. As a consequence, any point in the regular set is periodic. Among other results, we also prove that for any connected component of the regular set, its boundary is a convex polygon with certain maximum number of sides.

Pointwise periodic maps with quantized first integrals

We describe the global dynamics of some pointwise periodic piecewise linear maps in the plane that exhibit interesting dynamic features. For each of these maps we find a first integral. For these integrals the set of values are discrete, thus quantized. Furthermore, the level sets are bounded sets whose interior is formed by a finite number of open tiles of certain regular or uniform tessellations. The action of the maps on each invariant set of tiles is described geometrically.

A dynamic Parrondo's paradox for continuous seasonal systems

We show that planar continuous alternating systems, which can be used to model systems with seasonality, can exhibit a type of Parrondo's dynamic paradox, in which the stability of an equilibrium, common to all seasons is reversed for the global seasonal system.

Phase portraits of random planar homogeneous vector fields

We study the phase portraits with positive probability of random planar homogeneous vector fields of degree n. In particular, for n=1,2,3, we give a complete solution of the problem and, moreover, either we give the exact value of each probability or we estimate it by using the Monte Carlo method. It is remarkable that all but two of these phase portraits are characterized by their index at the origin and by their number of invariant straight lines through it.

Stability index of linear random dynamical systems

Given a homogeneous linear discrete or continuous dynamical system, its stability index is given by the dimension of the stable manifold of the zero solution. In particular, for the $n$ dimensional case, the zero solution is globally asymptotically stable if and only if this stability index is $n.$ Fixed $n,$ let $X$ be the random variable that assigns to each linear random dynamical system its stability index, and let $p_k$ with $k=0,1,\ldots,n,$ denote the probabilities that $P(X=k)$. In this paper we obtain either the exact values $p_k,$ or their estimations by combining the Monte Carlo method with a least square approach that uses some affine relations among the values $p_k,k=0,1,\ldots,n.$ The particular case of $n$-order homogeneous linear random differential or difference equations is also studied in detail.

Bifurcation of 2-periodic orbits from non-hyperbolic fixed points

We introduce the concept of 2-cyclicity for families of one-dimensional maps with a non-hyperbolic fixed point by analogy to the cyclicity for families of planar vector fields with a weak focus. This new concept is useful in order to study the number of 2-periodic orbits that can bifurcate from the fixed point. As an application we study the 2-cyclicity of some natural families of polynomial maps.

Dynamical Classification of a Family of Birational Maps of C^2 via Algebraic Entropy

This work dynamically classifies a 9-parametric family of birational maps f : C2 -> C2. From the sequence of the degrees dn of the iterates of f, we find the dynamical degree delta(f) of f. We identify when dn grows periodically, linearly, quadratically or exponentially. The considered family includes the birational maps studied by Bedford and Kim in [4] as one of its subfamilies.

Zero Entropy for Some Birational Maps of C^2

This work deals with a special case of family of birational maps f : C2 -> C2 dynamically classified in [9]. In this work we study the zero entropy sub families of f. The sequence of degrees dn associated to the iterates of f is found to grow periodically, linearly, quadratically or exponentially. Explicit invariant fibrations for zero entropy families and all the integrable and periodic mappings inside the family f are given.

Invariant Fibrations for some Birational Maps of C^2

In this article we extract and study the zero entropy subfamilies of a certain family of birational maps of the plane. We find these zero entropy mappings and give the invariant fibrations associated to them.

Non-integrability of measure preserving maps via Lie symmetries

We consider the problem of characterizing, for certain natural number $m$, the local $\mathcal{C}^m$-non-integrability near elliptic fixed points of smooth planar measure preserving maps. Our criterion relates this non-integrability with the existence of some Lie Symmetries associated to the maps, together with the study of the finiteness of its periodic points. One of the steps in the proof uses the regularity of the period function on the whole period annulus for non-degenerate centers, question that we believe that is interesting by itself. The obtained criterion can be applied to prove the local non-integrability of the Cohen map and of several rational maps coming from second order difference equations.

Basin of attraction of triangular maps with applications

We consider some planar triangular maps. These maps preserve certain fibration of the plane. We assume that there exists an invariant attracting fiber and we study the limit dynamics of those points in the basin of attraction of this invariant fiber, assuming that either it contains a global attractor, or it is filled by fixed or 2-periodic points. Finally, we apply our results to a variety of examples, from particular cases of triangular systems to some planar quasi-homogeneous maps, and some multiplicative and additive difference equations, as well.

Global periodicity conditions for maps and recurrences via Normal Forms

We face the problem of characterizing the periodic cases in parametric families of (real or complex) rational diffeomorphisms having a fixed point. Our approach relies on the Normal Form Theory, to obtain necessary conditions for the existence of a formal linearization of the map, and on the introduction of a suitable rational parametrization of the parameters of the family. Using these tools we can find a finite set of values p for which the map can be p-periodic, reducing the problem of finding the parameters for which the periodic cases appear to simple computations. We apply our results to several two and three dimensional classes of polynomial or rational maps. In particular we find the global periodic cases for several Lyness type recurrences.

Non-autonomous 2-periodic Gumovski-Mira difference equations

We consider two types of non-autonomous 2-periodic Gumovski-Mira difference equations. We show that while the corresponding autonomous recurrences are conjugated, the behavior of the sequences generated by the 2-periodic ones differ dramatically: in one case the behavior of the sequences is simple (integrable) and in the other case it is much more complicated (chaotic). We also present a global study of the integrable case that includes which periods appear for the recurrence.

Integrability and non-integrability of periodic non-autonomous Lyness recurrences

This paper studies non-autonomous Lyness type recurrences of the form $x_{n+2}=(a_n+x_{n+1})/x_{n}$, where $\{a_n\}$ is a $k$-periodic sequence of positive numbers with primitive period $k$. We show that for the cases $k\in\{1,2,3,6\}$ the behavior of the sequence $\{x_n\}$ is simple (integrable) while for the remaining cases satisfying this behavior can be much more complicated (chaotic). We also show that the cases where $k$ is a multiple of 5 present some different features.
