A Configurable ETC2 Encoder with Learned Search
ETC2 fixes the texture representation and bit rate, leaving the encoder to trade search time for distortion. We present a configurable CPU encoder in which rules or small neural networks allocate conventional ETC2 searches; these searches construct every encoded block. Configurations span fast-encoder output through broader mode and endpoint searches. On 64 color textures used to evaluate and select configurations, the fastest measured configurations reaching at least Google Etc2Comp's pooled REC709 PSNR at efforts 0-49.5 run 30.7-40.9 times faster. A high-quality configuration exceeds effort-100 PSNR with 64.1% less time. At equal search quotas, learned action ranking and second-search allocation jointly gain 0.124 dB over rule-based choices. At high quality, learning saves time at a small distortion cost. Outputs retain standard ETC2 storage and hardware decoding.
