Strongly discrete subsets with Lindel\"of closures

We define a topological space to be an "SDL space" if the closure of each one of its strongly discrete subsets is Lindel\"of. After distinguishing this property from the Lindel\"of property we make various remarks about cardinal invariants of SDL spaces. For example we prove that $|X| \leq 2^{\chi(X)}$ for every SDL Urysohn space and that every SDL $P$-space of character $\leq \omega_1$ is regular and has cardinality $\leq 2^{\omega_1}$. Finally, we exploit our results to obtain some partial answers to questions about the cardinality of cellular-Lindel\"of spaces.

On two questions on selectively highly divergent spaces

A topological space $X$ is selectively highly divergent (SHD) if for every sequence of non-empty open subsets $\{U_n: n\in \omega \}$ of $X$, we can pick a point $x_n\in U_n$, for every $n<\omega$, such that the sequence $\{x_n: n\in\omega\} $ has no convergent subsequences. In this note we answer four questions related to this notion asked in ArXiv:2307.11992.

More on Cardinality Bounds Involving the Weak Lindel\"of degree

We give several new bounds for the cardinality of a Hausdorff topological space $X$ involving the weak Lindel\"of degree $wL(X)$. In particular, we show that if $X$ is extremally disconnected, then $|X|\leq 2^{wL(X)\pi\chi(X)\psi(X)}$, and if $X$ is additionally power homogeneous, then $|X|\leq 2^{wL(X)\pi\chi(X)}$. We also prove that if $X$ is an almost Lindel\"of space with a strong $G_\delta$-diagonal of rank 2, then $|X|\leq 2^{\aleph_0}$; that if $X$ is a star-cdc space with a $G_\delta$-diagonal of rank 3, then $|X| \le 2^{\aleph_0}$; and if $X$ is any normal star-cdc space $X$ with a $G_\delta$-diagonal of rank 2, then $|X|\leq 2^{\aleph_0}$. Several improvements of results in [9] are also given. We show that if $X$ is locally compact, then $|X|\leq wL(X)^{\psi(X)}$ and that $|X|\leq wL(X)^{t(X)}$ if $X$ is additionally power homogeneous. We also prove that $|X|\leq 2^{\psi_c(X)t(X)wL(X)}$ for any space with a $\pi$-base whose elements have compact closures and that the stronger inequality $|X|\leq wL(X)^{\psi_c(X)t(X)}$ is true when $X$ is locally $H$-closed or locally Lindel\"of.

A common extension of Lindel\"of, H-closed and ccc

The inequality $|X| \leq 2^{\chi(X)}$ has been proved to be true for Lindel\"of spaces (Arhangel'ski\u\i, 1969), $H$-closed spaces (Dow-Porter, 1982) and ccc spaces (Hajnal-Ju\'asz 1967), by quite different arguments. We present a common extension of all these properties which allows us to give a unified proof of these three theorems.

Upper bounds for the tightness of the $G_\delta$-topology

We prove that if $X$ is a regular space with no uncountable free sequences, then the tightness of its $G_\delta$ topology is at most continuum and if $X$ is in addition Lindel\"of then its $G_\delta$ topology contains no free sequences of length larger then the continuum. We also show that the higher cardinal generalization of our theorem does not hold, by constructing a regular space with no free sequences of length larger than $\omega_1$, but whose $G_\delta$ topology can have arbitrarily large tightness.

On Cellular-Compact and related spaces

Tkachuk and Wilson proved that a regular first countable cellular-compact space has cardinality not exceeding the continuum. In the same paper they asked if this result continues to hold for Hausdorff spaces. Xuan and Song considered the same notion and asked if every cellular-compact space is weakly Lindelof. We answer the last question for first countable spaces. As a byproduct of this result, we present a somewhat different proof of Tkachuk and Wilson theorem, valid for the wider class of Urysohn spaces. The result actually holds for a class of spaces in between cellular-compact and cellular-Lindelof. We conclude with some comments on the cardinality of a weakly linearly Lindelof space.

A common extension of Arhangel'skii's Theorem and the Hajnal-Juhasz inequality

We present a bound for the weak Lindel\"of number of the $G_\delta$-modification of a Hausdorff space which implies various known cardinal inequalities, including the following two fundamental results in the theory of cardinal invariants in topology: $|X|\le 2^{L(X)\chi(X)}$ (Arhangel'skii) and $|X|\le 2^{c(X)\chi (X)}$ (Hajnal-Juhasz). This solves a question that goes back to Bell, Ginsburg and Woods and is mentioned in Hodel's survey on Arhangel'skii's Theorem. In contrast to previous attempts we do not need any separation axiom beyond $T_2$.

Pseudoradial spaces and copies of $\omega_1+1$

In this paper we compare the concepts of pseudoradial spaces and the recently defined strongly pseudoradial spaces in the realm of compact spaces. We show that $\mathrm{MA}+\mathfrak{c}=\omega_2$ implies that there is a compact pseudoradial space that is not strongly pseudoradial. We essentially construct a compact, sequentially compact space $X$ and a continuous function $f:X\to\omega_1+1$ in such a way that there is no copy of $\omega_1+1$ in $X$ that maps cofinally under $f$. We also give some conditions that imply the existence of copies of $\omega_1$ in spaces. In particular, $\mathrm{PFA}$ implies that compact almost radial spaces of radial character $\omega_1$ contain many copies of $\omega_1$.

On weakening tightness to weak tightness

The weak tightness $wt(X)$ of a space $X$ was introduced in [11] with the property $wt(X)\leq t(X)$. We investigate several well-known results concerning $t(X)$ and consider whether they extend to the weak tightness setting. First we give an example of a non-sequential compactum $X$ such that $wt(X)=\aleph_0<t(X)$ under $2^{\aleph_0}=2^{\aleph_1}$. In particular, this demonstrates the celebrated Balogh's Theorem [5] does not hold in general if countably tight is replaced with weakly countably tight. Second, we introduce the notion of an S-free sequence and show that if $X$ is a homogeneous compactum then $|X|\leq 2^{wt(X)\pi_\chi(X)}$. This refines a theorem of De la Vega [12]. In the case where the cardinal invariants involved are countable, this also represents a variation of a theorem of Juh\'asz and van Mill [15]. Third, we show that if $X$ is a $T_1$ space, $wt(X)\leq\kappa$, $X$ is $\kappa^+$-compact, and $\psi(\overline{D},X)\leq 2^\kappa$ for any $D\subseteq X$ satisfying $|D|\leq 2^\kappa$, then a) $d(X)\leq 2^\kappa$ and b) $X$ has at most $2^\kappa$-many $G_\kappa$-points. This is a variation of another theorem of Balogh [6]. Finally, we show that if $X$ is a regular space, $\kappa=L(X)wt(X)$, and $\lambda$ is a caliber of $X$ satisfying $\kappa<\lambda\leq \left(2^{\kappa}\right)^+$, then $d(X)\leq 2^{\kappa}$. This extends of theorem of Arhangel'skii [3].

A note on rank 2 diagonals

We solve two questions regarding spaces with a ($G_\delta$)-diagonal of rank 2. One is a question of Basile, Bella and Ridderbos regarding weakly Lindel\"of spaces with a $G_\delta$-diagonal of rank 2 and the other is a question of Arhangel'skii and Bella asking whether every space with a diagonal of rank 2 and cellularity continuum has cardinality at most continuum.

Cardinal invariants of cellular-Lindelof spaces

A space $X$ is said to be "cellular-Lindel\"of" if for every cellular family $\mathcal{U}$ there is a Lindel\"of subspace $L$ of $X$ which meets every element of $\mathcal{U}$. Cellular-Lindel\"of spaces generalize both Lindel\"of spaces and spaces with the countable chain condition. Solving questions of Xuan and Song, we prove that every cellular-Lindel\"of monotonically normal space is Lindel\"of and that every cellular-Lindel\"of space with a regular $G_\delta$-diagonal has cardinality at most $2^\mathfrak{c}$. We also prove that every normal cellular-Lindel\"of first-countable space has cardinality at most continuum under $2^{<\mathfrak{c}}=\mathfrak{c}$ and that every normal cellular Lindel\"of space with a $G_\delta$-diagonal of rank $2$ has cardinality at most continuum.

A non-discrete space $X$ with $C_p(X)$ Menger at infinity

In a paper by Bella, Tokg\"os and Zdomskyy it is asked whether there exists a Tychonoff space $X$ such that the remainder of $C_p(X)$ in some compactification is Menger but not $\sigma$-compact. In this paper we prove that it is consistent that such space exists and in particular its existence follows from the existence of a Menger ultrafilter.

A definitive improvement of a game-theoretic bound and the long tightness game

The main goal of the paper is the full proof of a cardinal inequality for a space with points $G_\delta $, obtained with the help of a long version of the Menger game. This result, which improves a similar one of Scheepers and Tall, was already established by the authors under the Continuum Hypothesis. The paper is completed by few remarks on a long version of the tightness game.

Cardinal Invariants for the $G_\delta$ topology

We prove upper bounds for the spread, the Lindel\"of number and the weak Lindel\"of number of the $G_\delta$-topology on a topological space and apply a few of our bounds to give a short proof to a recent result of Juh\'asz and van Mill regarding the cardinality of a $\sigma$-countably tight homogeneous compactum.

On the cardinality of almost discretely Lindelof spaces

A space is said to be "almost discretely Lindel\"of" if every discrete subset can be covered by a Lindel\"of subspace. Juh\'asz, Tkachuk and Wilson asked whether every almost discretely Lindel\"of first-countable Hausdorff space has cardinality at most continuum. We prove that this is the case under $2^{<\mathfrak{c}}=\mathfrak{c}$ (which is a consequence of Martin's Axiom, for example) and for Urysohn spaces in ZFC, thus improving a result by Juh\'asz, Soukup and Szentmikl\'ossy. We conclude with a few related results and questions.

On cardinality bounds involving the weak Lindel\"of degree

We give a general closing-off argument in Theorem 2.1 from which several corollaries follow, including (1) if $X$ is a locally compact Hausdorff space then $|X|\leq 2^{wL(X)\psi(X)}$, and (2) if $X$ is a locally compact power homogeneous Hausdorff space then $|X|\leq 2^{wL(X)t(X)}$. The first extends the well-known cardinality bound $2^{\psi(X)}$ for a compactum $X$ in a new direction. As $|X|\leq 2^{wL(X)\chi(X)}$ for a normal space $X$ [3], this enlarges the class of known Tychonoff spaces for which this bound holds. In 2.10 we give a short, direct proof of (1) that does not use 2.1. Yet 2.1 is broad enough to establish results much more general than (1), such as if $X$ is a regular space with a $\pi$-base $\scr{B}$ such that $|B|\leq 2^{wL(X)\chi(X)}$ for all $B\in\scr{B}$, then $|X|\leq 2^{wL(X)\chi(X)}$. Separately, it is shown that if $X$ is a regular space with a $\pi$-base whose elements have compact closure, then $|X|\leq 2^{wL(X)\psi(X)t(X)}$. This partially answers a question from [3] and gives a third, separate proof of (1). We also show that if $X$ is a weakly Lindel\"of, normal, sequential space with $\chi(X)\leq 2^{\aleph_0}$, then $|X|\leq 2^{\aleph_0}$. Result (2) above is a new generalization of the cardinality bound $2^{t(X)}$ for a power homogeneous compactum $X$ (Arhangel'skii, van Mill, and Ridderbos [2], De la Vega in the homogeneous case [9]). To this end we show that if $U\subseteq clD\subseteq X$, where $X$ is power homogeneous and $U$ is open, then $|U|\leq |D|^{\pi_{\chi}(X)}$. This is a strengthening of a result of Ridderbos [18].

Selective game versions of countable tightness with bounded finite selections

For a topological space $X$ and a point $x \in X$, consider the following game -- related to the property of $X$ being countably tight at $x$. In each inning $n\in\omega$, the first player chooses a set $A_n$ that clusters at $x$, and then the second player picks a point $a_n\in A_n$; the second player is the winner if and only if $x\in\overline{\{a_n:n\in\omega\}}$. In this work, we study variations of this game in which the second player is allowed to choose finitely many points per inning rather than one, but in which the number of points they are allowed to choose in each inning has been fixed in advance. Surprisingly, if the number of points allowed per inning is the same throughout the play, then all of the games obtained in this fashion are distinct. We also show that a new game is obtained if the number of points the second player is allowed to pick increases at each inning.

Menger remainders of topological groups

In this paper we discuss what kind of constrains combinatorial covering properties of Menger, Scheepers, and Hurewicz impose on remainders of topological groups. For instance, we show that such a remainder is Hurewicz if and only it is $\sigma$-compact. Also, the existence of a Scheepers non-$\sigma$-compact remainder of a topological group follows from CH and yields a $P$-point, and hence is independent of ZFC. We also make an attempt to prove a dichotomy for the Menger property of remainders of topological groups in the style of Arhangel'skii.
