Building an Open-Vocabulary Video CLIP Model with Better Architectures, Optimization and Data

Despite significant results achieved by Contrastive Language-Image Pretraining (CLIP) in zero-shot image recognition, limited effort has been made exploring its potential for zero-shot video recognition. This paper presents Open-VCLIP++, a simple yet effective framework that adapts CLIP to a strong zero-shot video classifier, capable of identifying novel actions and events during testing. Open-VCLIP++ minimally modifies CLIP to capture spatial-temporal relationships in videos, thereby creating a specialized video classifier while striving for generalization. We formally demonstrate that training Open-VCLIP++ is tantamount to continual learning with zero historical data. To address this problem, we introduce Interpolated Weight Optimization, a technique that leverages the advantages of weight interpolation during both training and testing. Furthermore, we build upon large language models to produce fine-grained video descriptions. These detailed descriptions are further aligned with video features, facilitating a better transfer of CLIP to the video domain. Our approach is evaluated on three widely used action recognition datasets, following a variety of zero-shot evaluation protocols. The results demonstrate that our method surpasses existing state-of-the-art techniques by significant margins. Specifically, we achieve zero-shot accuracy scores of 88.1%, 58.7%, and 81.2% on UCF, HMDB, and Kinetics-600 datasets respectively, outpacing the best-performing alternative methods by 8.5%, 8.2%, and 12.3%. We also evaluate our approach on the MSR-VTT video-text retrieval dataset, where it delivers competitive video-to-text and text-to-video retrieval performance, while utilizing substantially less fine-tuning data compared to other methods. Toward Intelligent Emergency Control for Large-scale Power Systems: Convergence of Learning, Physics, Computing and Control

This paper has delved into the pressing need for intelligent emergency control in large-scale power systems, which are experiencing significant transformations and are operating closer to their limits with more uncertainties. Learning-based control methods are promising and have shown effectiveness for intelligent power system control. However, when they are applied to large-scale power systems, there are multifaceted challenges such as scalability, adaptiveness, and security posed by the complex power system landscape, which demand comprehensive solutions. The paper first proposes and instantiates a convergence framework for integrating power systems physics, machine learning, advanced computing, and grid control to realize intelligent grid control at a large scale. Our developed methods and platform based on the convergence framework have been applied to a large (more than 3000 buses) Texas power system, and tested with 56000 scenarios. Our work achieved a 26% reduction in load shedding on average and outperformed existing rule-based control in 99.7% of the test scenarios. The results demonstrated the potential of the proposed convergence framework and DRL-based intelligent control for the future grid.

FedHyper: A Universal and Robust Learning Rate Scheduler for Federated Learning with Hypergradient Descent

The theoretical landscape of federated learning (FL) undergoes rapid evolution, but its practical application encounters a series of intricate challenges, and hyperparameter optimization is one of these critical challenges. Amongst the diverse adjustments in hyperparameters, the adaptation of the learning rate emerges as a crucial component, holding the promise of significantly enhancing the efficacy of FL systems. In response to this critical need, this paper presents FedHyper, a novel hypergradient-based learning rate adaptation algorithm specifically designed for FL. FedHyper serves as a universal learning rate scheduler that can adapt both global and local rates as the training progresses. In addition, FedHyper not only showcases unparalleled robustness to a spectrum of initial learning rate configurations but also significantly alleviates the necessity for laborious empirical learning rate adjustments. We provide a comprehensive theoretical analysis of FedHyper's convergence rate and conduct extensive experiments on vision and language benchmark datasets. The results demonstrate that FEDHYPER consistently converges 1.1-3x faster than FedAvg and the competing baselines while achieving superior final accuracy. Moreover, FedHyper catalyzes a remarkable surge in accuracy, augmenting it by up to 15% compared to FedAvg under suboptimal initial learning rate settings.

FedNAR: Federated Optimization with Normalized Annealing Regularization

Weight decay is a standard technique to improve generalization performance in modern deep neural network optimization, and is also widely adopted in federated learning (FL) to prevent overfitting in local clients. In this paper, we first explore the choices of weight decay and identify that weight decay value appreciably influences the convergence of existing FL algorithms. While preventing overfitting is crucial, weight decay can introduce a different optimization goal towards the global objective, which is further amplified in FL due to multiple local updates and heterogeneous data distribution. To address this challenge, we develop {\it Federated optimization with Normalized Annealing Regularization} (FedNAR), a simple yet effective and versatile algorithmic plug-in that can be seamlessly integrated into any existing FL algorithms. Essentially, we regulate the magnitude of each update by performing co-clipping of the gradient and weight decay. We provide a comprehensive theoretical analysis of FedNAR's convergence rate and conduct extensive experiments on both vision and language datasets with different backbone federated optimization algorithms. Our experimental results consistently demonstrate that incorporating FedNAR into existing FL algorithms leads to accelerated convergence and heightened model accuracy. Moreover, FedNAR exhibits resilience in the face of various hyperparameter configurations. Specifically, FedNAR has the ability to self-adjust the weight decay when the initial specification is not optimal, while the accuracy of traditional FL algorithms would markedly decline. Our codes are released at \href{https://github.com/ljb121002/fednar}{https://github.com/ljb121002/fednar}.

Multi-mode Cavity Centric Architectures for Quantum Simulation

Near-term quantum computing technologies grapple with huge complexity overheads, hindering their ability to induce algorithms, necessitating engineering and scientific innovations. One class of problems of interest is Quantum Simulation, whereby quantum systems are simulated using a quantum computer. However, current devices are yet to surpass classical tensor network techniques. For problems of interest, where classical simulation techniques fail, large degrees of entanglement are required. Another challenge of implementing quantum simulation problems is that qubits sit idle whilst alternating simulation terms are implemented, exposing the system to decoherence. In the near term, 2D planar superconducting lattices of circuit-QED elements such as the transmon continue to draw substantial attention, but they are hindered by their nearest neighbor topology and relatively short lifespan, two problems that are problematic for quantum simulation. One technology of particular interest is the multi-mode superconducting resonator capable of storing multiple qubits in one device. We observe that these cavities have a natural virtual topology that aligns particularly well with quantum simulation problems, and exhibit much longer lifespans in comparison to other planar superconducting hardware. In this paper we present MUCIC, we discuss the simple integration of these devices into the current landscape and their implications to quantum simulation, motivated by their alignment to the quantum simulation problem, and potential as a quantum memory candidate. We report the development of MUCICs transpiler, leading to reductions of up to 82% in quantum simulation circuit depths. Additionally, our investigation demonstrates improvements of up to 19.4% in converged results from Variational Quantum Algorithms.

PolicyCleanse: Backdoor Detection and Mitigation in Reinforcement Learning

While real-world applications of reinforcement learning are becoming popular, the security and robustness of RL systems are worthy of more attention and exploration. In particular, recent works have revealed that, in a multi-agent RL environment, backdoor trigger actions can be injected into a victim agent (a.k.a. Trojan agent), which can result in a catastrophic failure as soon as it sees the backdoor trigger action. To ensure the security of RL agents against malicious backdoors, in this work, we propose the problem of Backdoor Detection in a multi-agent competitive reinforcement learning system, with the objective of detecting Trojan agents as well as the corresponding potential trigger actions, and further trying to mitigate their Trojan behavior. In order to solve this problem, we propose PolicyCleanse that is based on the property that the activated Trojan agents accumulated rewards degrade noticeably after several timesteps. Along with PolicyCleanse, we also design a machine unlearning-based approach that can effectively mitigate the detected backdoor. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed methods can accurately detect Trojan agents, and outperform existing backdoor mitigation baseline approaches by at least 3% in winning rate across various types of agents and environments.

AntM$^{2}$C: A Large Scale Dataset For Multi-Scenario Multi-Modal CTR Prediction

Click-through rate (CTR) prediction is a crucial issue in recommendation systems. There has been an emergence of various public CTR datasets. However, existing datasets primarily suffer from the following limitations. Firstly, users generally click different types of items from multiple scenarios, and modeling from multiple scenarios can provide a more comprehensive understanding of users. Existing datasets only include data for the same type of items from a single scenario. Secondly, multi-modal features are essential in multi-scenario prediction as they address the issue of inconsistent ID encoding between different scenarios. The existing datasets are based on ID features and lack multi-modal features. Third, a large-scale dataset can provide a more reliable evaluation of models, fully reflecting the performance differences between models. The scale of existing datasets is around 100 million, which is relatively small compared to the real-world CTR prediction. To address these limitations, we propose AntM$^{2}$C, a Multi-Scenario Multi-Modal CTR dataset based on industrial data from Alipay. Specifically, AntM$^{2}$C provides the following advantages: 1) It covers CTR data of 5 different types of items, providing insights into the preferences of users for different items, including advertisements, vouchers, mini-programs, contents, and videos. 2) Apart from ID-based features, AntM$^{2}$C also provides 2 multi-modal features, raw text and image features, which can effectively establish connections between items with different IDs. 3) AntM$^{2}$C provides 1 billion CTR data with 200 features, including 200 million users and 6 million items. It is currently the largest-scale CTR dataset available. Based on AntM$^{2}$C, we construct several typical CTR tasks and provide comparisons with baseline methods. Block-Level Interference Exploitation Precoding for MU-MISO: An ADMM Approach

We study constructive interference based block-level precoding (CI-BLP) in the downlink of multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems. Specifically, our aim is to extend the analysis on CI-BLP to the case where the considered number of symbol slots is smaller than that of the users. To this end, we mathematically prove the feasibility of using the pseudo-inverse to obtain the optimal CI-BLP precoding matrix in a closed form. Similar to the case when the number of users is small, we show that a quadratic programming (QP) optimization on simplex can be constructed. We also design a low-complexity algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework, which can efficiently solve large-scale QP problems. We further analyze the convergence and complexity of the proposed algorithm. Numerical results validate our analysis and the optimality of the proposed algorithm, and further show that the proposed algorithm offers a flexible performance-complexity tradeoff by limiting the maximum number of iterations, which motivates the use of CI-BLP in practical wireless systems.

AutoReP: Automatic ReLU Replacement for Fast Private Network Inference

The growth of the Machine-Learning-As-A-Service (MLaaS) market has highlighted clients' data privacy and security issues. Private inference (PI) techniques using cryptographic primitives offer a solution but often have high computation and communication costs, particularly with non-linear operators like ReLU. Many attempts to reduce ReLU operations exist, but they may need heuristic threshold selection or cause substantial accuracy loss. This work introduces AutoReP, a gradient-based approach to lessen non-linear operators and alleviate these issues. It automates the selection of ReLU and polynomial functions to speed up PI applications and introduces distribution-aware polynomial approximation (DaPa) to maintain model expressivity while accurately approximating ReLUs. Our experimental results demonstrate significant accuracy improvements of 6.12% (94.31%, 12.9K ReLU budget, CIFAR-10), 8.39% (74.92%, 12.9K ReLU budget, CIFAR-100), and 9.45% (63.69%, 55K ReLU budget, Tiny-ImageNet) over current state-of-the-art methods, e.g., SNL. Morever, AutoReP is applied to EfficientNet-B2 on ImageNet dataset, and achieved 75.55% accuracy with 176.1 times ReLU budget reduction.

QASMTrans: A QASM based Quantum Transpiler Framework for NISQ Devices

The success of a quantum algorithm hinges on the ability to orchestrate a successful application induction. Detrimental overheads in mapping general quantum circuits to physically implementable routines can be the deciding factor between a successful and erroneous circuit induction. In QASMTrans, we focus on the problem of rapid circuit transpilation. Transpilation plays a crucial role in converting high-level, machine-agnostic circuits into machine-specific circuits constrained by physical topology and supported gate sets. The efficiency of transpilation continues to be a substantial bottleneck, especially when dealing with larger circuits requiring high degrees of inter-qubit interaction. QASMTrans is a high-performance C++ quantum transpiler framework that demonstrates up to 369X speedups compared to the commonly used Qiskit transpiler. We observe speedups on large dense circuits such as uccsd_n24 and qft_n320 which require O(10^6) gates. QASMTrans successfully transpiles the aforementioned circuits in 69s and 31s, whilst Qiskit exceeded an hour of transpilation time. With QASMTrans providing transpiled circuits in a fraction of the time of prior transpilers, potential design space exploration, and heuristic-based transpiler design becomes substantially more tractable. QASMTrans is released at http://github.com/pnnl/qasmtrans.

Strategic Investments of Large Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems in the Wholesale Electricity Market

In this paper, we study the strategic investment problem of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in the wholesale electricity market from the perspective of BESSs owners. Large-scale BESSs planning without considering the possible wholesale market price change may result in possible locational marginal price (LMP) changes. To overcome such limits, we propose a three-phase approach for the BESS investment problem. In Phase-1, we conduct a search for the optimal BESS configurations via a congestion-based heuristics and Bayesian optimization. In Phases 2 and 3, we alternatively dispatch optimization tasks to optimize the wholesale market clearing for LMPs and identify the optimal schedule for BESSs operations. We validate the model using a ten-year simulation on the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) market. Experimental results show that the Bayesian optimization model runs 16 times faster than the grid search model in achieving the same solution quality. Further, the iterative method demonstrates that the model without considering possible LMP changes makes a 21% profit overestimation.

Symbol-Level Precoding for MU-MIMO System with RIRC Receiver

Consider a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) downlink system in which the base station (BS) sends multiple data streams to multi-antenna users via symbol-level precoding (SLP), where the optimization of receive combining matrix becomes crucial, unlike in the single-antenna user scenario. We begin by introducing a joint optimization problem on the symbol-level transmit precoder and receive combiner. The problem is solved using the alternating optimization (AO) method, and the optimal solution structures for transmit precoding and receive combining matrices are derived by using Lagrangian and Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions, based on which, the original problem is transformed into an equivalent quadratic programming problem, enabling more efficient solutions. To address the challenge that the above joint design is difficult to implement, we propose a more practical scheme where the receive combining optimization is replaced by the interference rejection combiner (IRC), which is however difficult to directly use because of the rank-one transmit precoding matrix. Therefore, we introduce a new regularized IRC (RIRC) receiver to circumvent the above issue. Numerical results demonstrate that the practical SLP-RIRC method enjoys only a slight communication performance loss compared to the joint transmit precoding and receive combining design, both offering substantial performance gains over the conventional BD-based approaches.

Equation of state of nuclear matter and neutron stars: Quark mean-field model versus relativistic mean-field model

The equation of state of neutron-rich nuclear matter is of interest to both nuclear physics and astrophysics. We have demonstrated the consistency between laboratory and astrophysical nuclear matter in neutron stars by considering low-density nuclear physics constraints (from $^{208}$Pb neutron-skin thickness) and high-density astrophysical constraints (from neutron star global properties). We have used both quark-level and hadron-level models, taking the quark mean-field (QMF) model and the relativistic mean-field (RMF) model as examples, respectively. We have constrained the equation of states of neutron stars and some key nuclear matter parameters within the Bayesian statistical approach, using the first multi-messenger event GW170817/AT 2017gfo, as well as the mass-radius simultaneous measurements of PSR J0030+0451 and PSR J0740+6620 from NICER, and the neutron-skin thickness of $^{208}$Pb from both PREX-II measurement and ab initio calculations. Our results show that, compared with the RMF model, QMF model's direct coupling of quarks with mesons and gluons leads to the evolution of the in-medium nucleon mass with the quark mass correction. This feature enables QMF model a wider range of model applicability, as shown by a slow drop of the nucleon mass with density and a large value at saturation that is jointly constrained by nuclear physics and astronomy.

Diquark and chiral condensate in a self-consistent NJL-type model

In this work, a modified two-flavor NJL-type model is utilized, in which the contact current-current interaction is Fierz-transformed into quark-antiquark interactions and quark-quark interactions, which are directly related to the chiral condensate and diquark condensate, respectively. Under mean-field approximation, the chiral condensate and the diquark condensate are studied on the same footing. We discuss in detail the competition between the chiral condensate and the diquark condensate, which are exclusively paired with u and d quarks, while also investigating the order of the chiral phase transition through an analysis of the resulting chiral susceptibility.

A Novel Spatial-Temporal Variational Quantum Circuit to Enable Deep Learning on NISQ Devices

Quantum computing presents a promising approach for machine learning with its capability for extremely parallel computation in high-dimension through superposition and entanglement. Despite its potential, existing quantum learning algorithms, such as Variational Quantum Circuits(VQCs), face challenges in handling more complex datasets, particularly those that are not linearly separable. What's more, it encounters the deployability issue, making the learning models suffer a drastic accuracy drop after deploying them to the actual quantum devices. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a novel spatial-temporal design, namely ST-VQC, to integrate non-linearity in quantum learning and improve the robustness of the learning model to noise. Specifically, ST-VQC can extract spatial features via a novel block-based encoding quantum sub-circuit coupled with a layer-wise computation quantum sub-circuit to enable temporal-wise deep learning. Additionally, a SWAP-Free physical circuit design is devised to improve robustness. These designs bring a number of hyperparameters. After a systematic analysis of the design space for each design component, an automated optimization framework is proposed to generate the ST-VQC quantum circuit. The proposed ST-VQC has been evaluated on two IBM quantum processors, ibm_cairo with 27 qubits and ibmq_lima with 7 qubits to assess its effectiveness. The results of the evaluation on the standard dataset for binary classification show that ST-VQC can achieve over 30% accuracy improvement compared with existing VQCs on actual quantum computers. Moreover, on a non-linear synthetic dataset, the ST-VQC outperforms a linear classifier by 27.9%, while the linear classifier using classical computing outperforms the existing VQC by 15.58%.

STAR-RIS Enhanced Joint Physical Layer Security and Covert Communications for Multi-antenna mmWave Systems

This paper investigates the utilization of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) in supporting joint physical layer security (PLS) and covert communications (CCs) in a multi-antenna millimeter wave (mmWave) system, where the base station (BS) communicates with both covert and security users while defeating eavesdropping by wardens with the help of a STAR-RIS. Specifically, analytical derivations are performed to obtain the closed-form expression of warden's minimum detection error probability (DEP). Furthermore, the asymptotic result of the minimum DEP and the lower bound of the secure rates are derived, considering the practical assumption that BS only knows the statistical channel state information (CSI) between STAR-RIS and the wardens. Subsequently, an optimization problem is formulated with the aim of maximizing the average sum of the covert rate and the minimum secure rate while ensuring the covert requirement and quality of service (QoS) for legal users by jointly optimizing the active and passive beamformers. Due to the strong coupling among variables, an iterative algorithm based on the alternating strategy and the semi-definite relaxation (SDR) method is proposed to solve the non-convex optimization problem. Simulation results indicate that the performance of the proposed STAR-RIS-assisted scheme greatly surpasses that of the conventional RIS scheme, which validates the superiority of STAR-RIS in simultaneously implementing PLS and CCs.

MGG: Accelerating Graph Neural Networks with Fine-grained intra-kernel Communication-Computation Pipelining on Multi-GPU Platforms

The increasing size of input graphs for graph neural networks (GNNs) highlights the demand for using multi-GPU platforms. However, existing multi-GPU GNN systems optimize the computation and communication individually based on the conventional practice of scaling dense DNNs. For irregularly sparse and fine-grained GNN workloads, such solutions miss the opportunity to jointly schedule/optimize the computation and communication operations for high-performance delivery. To this end, we propose MGG, a novel system design to accelerate full-graph GNNs on multi-GPU platforms. The core of MGG is its novel dynamic software pipeline to facilitate fine-grained computation-communication overlapping within a GPU kernel. Specifically, MGG introduces GNN-tailored pipeline construction and GPU-aware pipeline mapping to facilitate workload balancing and operation overlapping. MGG also incorporates an intelligent runtime design with analytical modeling and optimization heuristics to dynamically improve the execution performance. Extensive evaluation reveals that MGG outperforms state-of-the-art full-graph GNN systems across various settings: on average 4.41X, 4.81X, and 10.83X faster than DGL, MGG-UVM, and ROC, respectively.
