Hybrid Semantic Context-Enhanced Ensemble Learning for Wind Power Ramp-Event Forecasting and Uncertainty-Aware Evaluation

Wind power ramp events which are sudden, large swings in turbine output over short windows are difficult to estimate, and standard models often miss them. Hybrid forecasting approach is built which augments semantic context to ramp-event forecast. Rather than applying an extensive language model directly to predict turbine operating data, we have implemented a pipeline where turbine operating data is converted to simplified text, which is then converted to dense embeddings to be used as inputs for ensemble models incorporated with other features. Testing runs are performed at multiple intervals within the SDWPF dataset, including 10-minute, 30-minute, and 60- minute horizons, with ramp events constituting the highest change in future power output. We check robustness against autoregressive, LSTM, and GRU baselines plus several ensemble configurations, using Diebold-Mariano tests and bootstrap confidence intervals, and we vary the ramp threshold, compress the embeddings with PCA, and validate externally on Kaggle SCADA and NREL data with uncertainty-aware scoring. The semantic-context features produce negligible yet statistically significant gains over the baselines in multiple paired ensemble runs, most clearly at the 30- and 60-minute horizons where these gains hold across different ramp-threshold definitions, and PCA compression helps in some longer-horizon cases. The best context- augmented ensembles rank near the top overall, though the GRU model still posts the lowest ramp-event RMSE at 30 and 60 minutes. External tests confirm the error reduction generalizes across datasets, but the size of the gain depends on both model and dataset. Prediction intervals cover most test cases well but weaken during ramp events, pointing to a localized shift in the data distribution.

Short term solar energy prediction by machine learning algorithms

Smooth power generation from solar stations demand accurate, reliable and efficient forecast of solar energy for optimal integration to cater market demand; however, the implicit instability of solar energy production may cause serious problems for the smooth power generation. We report daily prediction of solar energy by exploiting the strength of machine learning techniques to capture and analyze complicated behavior of enormous features effectively. For this purpose, dataset comprising of 98 solar stations has been taken from energy competition of American Meteorological Society (AMS) for predicting daily solar energy. Forecast models of base line regressors including linear, ridge, lasso, decision tree, random forest and artificial neural networks have been implemented on the AMS solar dataset. Grid size is converted into two sections: 16x9 and 10x4 to ascertain attributes contributing more towards the generated power from densely located stations on global ensemble forecast system (GEFS). To evaluate the models, statistical measures of prediction error in terms of RMSE, MAE and R2_score have been analyzed and compared with the existing techniques. It has been observed that improved accuracy is achieved through random forest and ridge regressor for both grid sizes in contrast to all other proposed methods. Stability and reliability of the proposed schemes are evaluated on a single solar station as well as on multiple independent runs.

Deep Object Detection based Mitosis Analysis in Breast Cancer Histopathological Images

Empirical evaluation of breast tissue biopsies for mitotic nuclei detection is considered an important prognostic biomarker in tumor grading and cancer progression. However, automated mitotic nuclei detection poses several challenges because of the unavailability of pixel-level annotations, different morphological configurations of mitotic nuclei, their sparse representation, and close resemblance with non-mitotic nuclei. These challenges undermine the precision of the automated detection model and thus make detection difficult in a single phase. This work proposes an end-to-end detection system for mitotic nuclei identification in breast cancer histopathological images. Deep object detection-based Mask R-CNN is adapted for mitotic nuclei detection that initially selects the candidate mitotic region with maximum recall. However, in the second phase, these candidate regions are refined by multi-object loss function to improve the precision. The performance of the proposed detection model shows improved discrimination ability (F-score of 0.86) for mitotic nuclei with significant precision (0.86) as compared to the two-stage detection models (F-score of 0.701) on TUPAC16 dataset. Promising results suggest that the deep object detection-based model has the potential to learn the characteristic features of mitotic nuclei from weakly annotated data and suggests that it can be adapted for the identification of other nuclear bodies in histopathological images.

Deep Belief Networks Based Feature Generation and Regression for Predicting Wind Power

Wind energy forecasting helps to manage power production, and hence, reduces energy cost. Deep Neural Networks (DNN) mimics hierarchical learning in the human brain and thus possesses hierarchical, distributed, and multi-task learning capabilities. Based on aforementioned characteristics, we report Deep Belief Network (DBN) based forecast engine for wind power prediction because of its good generalization and unsupervised pre-training attributes. The proposed DBN-WP forecast engine, which exhibits stochastic feature generation capabilities and is composed of multiple Restricted Boltzmann Machines, generates suitable features for wind power prediction using atmospheric properties as input. DBN-WP, due to its unsupervised pre-training of RBM layers and generalization capabilities, is able to learn the fluctuations in the meteorological properties and thus is able to perform effective mapping of the wind power. In the deep network, a regression layer is appended at the end to predict sort-term wind power. It is experimentally shown that the deep learning and unsupervised pre-training capabilities of DBN based model has comparable and in some cases better results than hybrid and complex learning techniques proposed for wind power prediction. The proposed prediction system based on DBN, achieves mean values of RMSE, MAE and SDE as 0.124, 0.083 and 0.122, respectively. Statistical analysis of several independent executions of the proposed DBN-WP wind power prediction system demonstrates the stability of the system. The proposed DBN-WP architecture is easy to implement and offers generalization as regards the change in location of the wind farm is concerned.
