Quantum Oscillons are Long-Lived

As the longest lived transient, oscillons play a critical role in classical field theory simulations of many phenomena. However, beyond the classical approximation, it is well-known that quantum corrections open decay channels through which oscillons radiate rapidly. Therefore it is believed that in the real world, oscillons are too short-lived to be phenomenologically relevant. We observe that previous calculations of the radiated power assume that the oscillon is in a coherent state. We show that a squeezed coherent state, on the other hand, would emit no radiation at leading order in the coupling. This leads us to the conclusion that the instantaneous radiation calculated in the literature corresponds not to the oscillon's decay, but rather to its relaxation from a coherent state to a lower-energy, squeezed coherent state, which then radiates much more slowly. As a result, the lifetime of the quantum oscillon is enhanced by an inverse power of the coupling.

Linearized Q-Ball Perturbations

Linearized deformations of the thick-walled (low-amplitude) (1+1)-dimensional Q-ball may be decomposed into relativistic modes, which are roughly plane waves, and also long-wavelength corotating and counterrotating Floquet modes. Each mode oscillates at a pair of mirror frequencies which average to the Q-ball frequency. The corotating modes are those of a breather or oscillon plus a very loosely bound mode. The counterrotating modes are described by an irrational-level Pöschl-Teller potential, with two discrete modes which mix with their unbound mirrors, unbinding them and turning them into Feshbach-type quasinormal modes. Expanding to leading order in the Q-ball amplitude, we present all of these modes in closed form, except for the bound mode which does not exist at leading order.

Instanton Corrections to the MSTB Kink Mass

The Montonen-Sarker-Trullinger-Bishop (MSTB) model enjoys two classically degenerate kink solutions in the same topological sector. We construct the instanton that interpolates between them and argue that the two lowest lying Hamiltonian eigenstates in the kink sector of the corresponding quantum theory correspond to symmetric and antisymmetric combinations of coherent states localized at these two solutions. We use the instanton gas approximation to provide a simple, analytic formula for the leading contribution to the mass splitting between these two states.

Carbon-12 in the generalized Skyrme model

We study properties of the $^{12}$C nucleus within the generalized Skyrme model where, in addition to the standard massive Skyrme model, the sextic term and the pionic potential squared are included. We find that the model continues to accurately describe the rotational bands of the $^{12}$C nucleus. In addition, at variance with the case of the standard Skyrme model, it provides the correct energy ordering of the classical solutions which correspond to the ground state and the Hoyle state, respectively.

Quantum Oscillons May be Long-Lived

Hertzberg has constructed a quantum oscillon that decays into pairs of relativistic mesons with a power much greater than the radiation from classical oscillon decay. This result is often construed as a proof that quantum oscillons decay quickly, and so are inconsequential. We apply a construction similar to Hertzberg's to the quantum kink. Again it leads to a rapid decay via the emission of relativistic mesons. However, we find that this is the decay of a squeezed kink state to a stable kink state, and so it does not imply that the quantum kink is unstable. We then consider a time-dependent solution, which may be an oscillon, and we see that the argument proceeds identically.
