The bracket width for Lie algebras of vector fields is finite

We prove that the bracket width of the Lie algebra of vector fields on any smooth affine algebraic variety of dimension $n$ is at most $(n+1)^2$. We give improved bounds for some families of $\mathbb{C}^*$-varieties, in particular for $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{C})$ and for the Koras--Russell cubic threefold.

Locally finite sets of derivations

Given an algebra B over a field k, we study conditions under which a Lie subalgebra of Der(B) is locally finite as a set of derivations. As an application of our results, we show that if X is a quasi-affine variety over an arbitrary field k, and if L is a finitely generated solvable Lie subalgebra of Der O(X) consisting of locally finite derivations, then L is locally finite. If, moreover, k is algebraically closed and of characteristic zero, and X is irreducible and affine, then L is integrable.

On Ramanujam's Theorem About Finite Dimensional Groups of Automorphisms

Ramanujam's theorem states that any connected finite-dimensional subgroup of the automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(X)$ of an irreducible variety $X$ is an algebraic group, in a natural way. In this note, we discuss the notion of dimension and extend Ramanujam's theorem to arbitrary (not necessarily irreducible) varieties.

Solvable Automorphism Groups of Varieties

Let $X$ be a variety of dimension $n$, and let $\mathrm{Aut}(X)$ be its automorphism group. When $X$ is quasi-affine, we prove that a solvable subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(X)$ that is generated by an irreducible family of automorphisms containing the identity is an algebraic subgroup. Our main applications concern arbitrary varieties. First, every connected solvable subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(X)$ is contained in a Borel subgroup and its derived length is $\leq n+1$. Second, the notion of solvable and unipotent radicals are well defined for any subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(X)$. Third, if $X$ is quasi-affine and connected and $\mathcal{B} \subset \mathrm{Aut}(X)$ is a Borel subgroup of derived length $n+1$, then $X$ is isomorphic to the affine $n$-space $\mathbb{A}^n$ and $\mathcal{B}$ is conjugate to the Jonqui\`eres subgroup.

Characterizing Varieties Using Birational Transformations

Suppose $X$ is an irreducible complex variety. We show that when $X$ is ruled, the group of birational transformations $Bir(X)$, as a group, determines $X$ up to birational transformations and automorphisms of the base field. In contrast, we demonstrate that this same property never holds for non-uniruled varieties.

Group Theoretical Characterizations of Rationality

Let X be an irreducible variety and Bir(X) its group of birational transformations. We show that the group structure of Bir(X) determines whether X is rational and whether X is ruled. Additionally, we prove that any Borel subgroup of Bir(X) has derived length at most twice the dimension of X, with equality occurring if and only if X is rational and the Borel subgroup is standard. We also provide examples of non-standard Borel subgroups of Bir(P^n) and Aut(A^n), thereby resolving conjectures by Popov and Furter-Poloni.

The Structure of Algebraic Families of Birational Transformations

We give a description of the algebraic families of birational transformations of an algebraic variety X. As an application, we show that the morphisms to Bir(X) given by algebraic families satisfy a Chevalley type result and a certain fibre-dimension formula. Moreover, we show that the algebraic subgroups of Bir(X) are exactly the closed finite-dimensional subgroups with finitely many components. We also study algebraic families of birational transformations preserving a fibration. This builds on previous work of Blanc-Furter, Hanamura, and Ramanujam.

The Automorphism groups of zero-dimensional monomial algebras

A monomial algebra B is defined as a quotient of a polynomial ring by a monomial ideal, which is an ideal generated by a finite set of monomials. In this paper, we determine the automorphism group of a monomial algebra B, under the assumption that B is a finite-dimensional vector space over a field of characteristic zero. We achieve this by providing an explicit classification of the homogeneous locally nilpotent derivations of B. The main body of the paper addresses the more general case of semigroup algebras, with the polynomial ring being a particular case.

Bracket width of current Lie algebras

The length of an element $z$ of a Lie algebra $L$ is defined as the smallest number $s$ needed to represent $z$ as a sum of $s$ brackets. The bracket width of $L$ is defined as supremum of the lengths of its elements. Given a finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero, we study the bracket width of current Lie algebras $L=\mathfrak g\otimes A$. We show that for an arbitrary $A$ the width is at most 2. For $A=k[[t]]$ and $A=k[t]$ we compute the width for algebras of types A and C.

On the characterization of affine toric varieties by their automorphism group

In this paper we show that a normal affine toric variety X different from the algebraic torus is uniquely determined by its automorphism group in the category of affine irreducible, not necessarily normal, algebraic varieties if and only if X is isomorphic to the product of the affine line and another affine toric variety. In the case where X is the algebraic torus T, we reach the same conclusion if we restrict the category to only include irreducible varieties of dimension at most the dimension of T. There are examples of varieties of dimension one higher than T having the same automorphism group of T. Hence, this last result is optimal.

Bracket width of the Lie algebra of vector fields on a smooth affine curve

We prove that the bracket width of the simple Lie algebra of vector fields $\rm{Vec}(C)$ of a smooth irreducible affine curve $C$ with a trivial tangent sheaf is at most three. In addition, if $C$ is a plane curve, the bracket width of $\rm{Vec}(C)$ is at most two and if moreover $C$ has a unique place at infinity, the bracket width of $\rm{Vec}(C)$ is exactly two. We also show that in case $C$ is rational, the width of $\rm{Vec}(C)$ equals one.

When is the automorphism group of an affine variety linear?

Let $Aut_{alg}(X)$ be the subgroup of the group of regular automorphisms $Aut(X)$ of an affine algebraic variety $X$ generated by all connected algebraic subgroups. We prove that if $dim X \ge 2$ and if $Aut_{alg}(X)$ is rich enough, $Aut_{alg}(X)$ is not linear, i.e., it cannot be embedded into $GL_n(K)$, where $K$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Moreover, $Aut(X)$ is isomorphic to an algebraic group as an abstract group only if the connected component of $Aut(X)$ is either the algebraic torus or a direct limit of commutative unipotent groups. Finally, we prove that for an uncountable $K$ the group of birational transformations of $X$ cannot be isomorphic to the group of automorphisms of an affine variety if $X$ is endowed with a rational action of a positive-dimensional linear algebraic group.

Automorphism groups of affine varieties consisting of algebraic elements

Given an affine algebraic variety $X$, we prove that if the neutral component $\mathrm{Aut}^\circ(X)$ of the automorphism group consists of algebraic elements, then it is nested, i.e., is a direct limit of algebraic subgroups. This improves our earlier result. To prove it, we obtain the following fact. If a connected ind-group $G$ contains a closed connected nested ind-subgroup $H\subset G$, and for any $g\in G$ some positive power of $g$ belongs to $H$, then $G=H.$

Characterization of affine $\mathbb{G}_m$-surfaces of hyperbolic type

In this note we prove that if $S$ is an affine non-toric $\mathbb{G}_m$-surface of hyperbolic type that admits a $\mathbb{G}_a$-action and $X$ is an affine irreducible variety such that $Aut(X)$ is isomorphic to $Aut(S)$ as an abstract group, then $X$ is a $\mathbb{G}_m$-surface of hyperbolic type. Further, we show that a smooth Danielewski surface $Dp = \{ xy = p(z) \} \subset \mathbb{A}^3$, where $p$ has no multiple roots, is determined by its automorphism group seen as an ind-group in the category of affine irreducible varieties.

Maximal commutative unipotent subgroups and a characterization of affine spherical varieties

We describe maximal commutative unipotent subgroups of the automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(X)$ of an irreducible affine variety $X$. Further we show that a group isomorphism $\mathrm{Aut}(X) \to \mathrm{Aut}(Y)$ maps unipotent elements to unipotent elements, where $Y$ is irreducible and affine. Using this result, we show that the automorphism group detects sphericity and the weight-monoid. As an application, we show that an affine toric variety different from an algebraic torus is determined by its automorphism group among normal irreducible affine varieties and we show that a smooth affine spherical variety different from an algebraic torus is determined by its automorphism group (up to an automorphism of the base field) among smooth irreducible affine varieties.

Bracket width of simple Lie algebras

The notion of commutator width of a group, defined as the smallest number of commutators needed to represent each element of the derived group as their product, has been extensively studied over the past decades. In particular, in 1992 Barge and Ghys discovered the first example of a simple group of commutator width greater than one among groups of diffeomorphisms of smooth manifolds. We consider a parallel notion of bracket width of a Lie algebra and present the first examples of simple Lie algebras of bracket width greater than one. They are found among the algebras of polynomial vector fields on smooth affine varieties.

Small G-varieties

An affine varieties with an action of a semisimple group $G$ is called "small" if every non-trivial $G$-orbit in $X$ is isomorphic to the orbit of a highest weight vector. Such a variety $X$ carries a canonical action of the multiplicative group $\mathbb{K}^*$ commuting with the $G$-action. We show that $X$ is determined by the $\mathbb{K}^*$-variety $X^U$ of fixed points under a maximal unipotent subgroups $U$ of $G$. Moreover, if $X$ is smooth, then $X$ is a $G$-vector bundle over the quotient $X// G$. If $G$ is of type $A_n$ ($n>1$), $C_n$, $E_6$, $E_7$ or $E_8$, we show that all affine $G$-varieties up to a certain dimension are small. As a consequence we have the following result. If $n>4$, every smooth affine $SL_n$-variety of dimension $<2n$ is an $\mathrm{SL}_n$-vector bundle over the smooth quotient $X//\mathrm{SL}_n$, with fiber isomorphic to the natural representation or its dual.
