Locally homogeneous Axiom A flows II: geometric structures for Anosov subgroups

Given a non-compact semisimple real Lie group $G$ and an Anosov subgroup $\Gamma$, we utilize the correspondence between $\mathbb R$-valued additive characters on Levi subgroups $L$ of $G$ and $\mathbb R$-affine homogeneous line bundles over $G/L$ to systematically construct families of non-empty domains of proper discontinuity for the $\Gamma$-action. If $\Gamma$ is torsion-free, the analytic dynamical systems on the quotients are Axiom A, and assemble into a single partially hyperbolic multiflow. Each Axiom A system admits global analytic stable/unstable foliations with non-wandering set a single basic set on which the flow is conjugate to Sambarino's refraction flow, establishing that all refraction flows arise in this fashion. Furthermore, the $\mathbb R$-valued additive character is regular if and only if the associated Axiom A system admits a compatible pseudo-Riemannian metric and contact structure, which we relate to the Poisson structure on the dual of the Lie algebra of $G$.

Locally homogeneous Axiom A flows I: projective Anosov subgroups and exponential mixing

By constructing a non-empty domain of discontinuity in a suitable homogeneous space, we prove that every torsion-free projective Anosov subgroup is the monodromy group of a locally homogeneous contact Axiom A dynamical system with a unique basic hyperbolic set on which the flow is conjugate to the refraction flow of Sambarino. Under the assumption of irreducibility, we utilize the work of Stoyanov to establish spectral estimates for the associated complex Ruelle transfer operators, and by way of corollary: exponential mixing, exponentially decaying error term in the prime orbit theorem, and a spectral gap for the Ruelle zeta function. With no irreducibility assumption, results of Dyatlov-Guillarmou imply the global meromorphic continuation of zeta functions with smooth weights, as well as the existence of a discrete spectrum of Ruelle-Pollicott resonances and (co)-resonant states. We apply our results to space-like geodesic flows for the convex cocompact pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of Danciger-Gu\'eritaud-Kassel, and the Benoist-Hilbert geodesic flow for strictly convex real projective manifolds.

Uniformization of compact complex manifolds by Anosov representations

We study uniformization problems for compact manifolds that arise as quotients of domains in complex flag varieties by images of Anosov homomorphisms. We focus on Anosov homomorphisms with "small" limit sets, as measured by the Riemannian Hausdorff codimension in the flag variety. Under such a codimension hypothesis, we show that all first-order deformations of complex structure on the associated compact complex manifolds are realized by deformations of the Anosov homomorphism. With some mild additional hypotheses we show that the character variety maps locally homeomorphically to the (generalized) Teichm\"uller space of the manifold. In particular this provides a local analogue of the Bers Simultaneous Uniformization Theorem in the setting of Anosov homomorphisms to higher-rank complex semisimple Lie groups.

(G,P)-opers and global Slodowy slices

In this paper, we introduce a generalization of G-opers for arbitrary parabolic subgroups P<G. For parabolic subgroups associated to even nilpotents, we parameterize (G,P)-opers by an object generalizing the base of the Hitchin fibration. In particular, we describe families of opers associated to higher Teichmuller spaces.

The pre-symplectic geometry of opers and the holonomy map

In this paper, we construct the moduli space of marked oper structures on a closed, oriented smooth surface of negative Euler characteristic as a holomorphic fiber bundle over Teichm\"{u}ller space. We prove that the holonomy map from the space of marked oper structures to the moduli space of reductive flat bundles is a holomorphic immersion, generalizing the known results for the moduli space of marked complex projective structures. Finally, we prove that the symplectic structure on the moduli space of marked complex projective structures extends to a pre-symplectic structure on the moduli space of marked opers whose reduced phase space is the space of marked complex projective structures.

Bi-Lagrangian structures and Teichm\"uller theory

In this paper, we review or introduce several differential structures on manifolds in the general setting of real and complex differential geometry, and apply this study to Teichm\"uller theory. We focus on bi-Lagrangian i.e. para-K\"ahler structures, which consist of a symplectic form and a pair of transverse Lagrangian foliations. We prove in particular that the complexification of a real-analytic K\"ahler manifold has a natural complex bi-Lagrangian structure. We then specialize to moduli spaces of geometric structures on closed surfaces, and show that old and new geometric features of these spaces are formal consequences of the general theory. We also gain clarity on several well-known results of Teichm\"uller theory by deriving them from pure differential geometric machinery.

Geometry of compact complex manifolds associated to generalized quasi-Fuchsian representations

We study the topology and geometry of compact complex manifolds associated to Anosov representations of surface groups and other hyperbolic groups in a complex semisimple Lie group $G$. These manifolds are obtained as quotients of the domains of discontinuity in generalized flag varieties $G/P$ constructed by Kapovich-Leeb-Porti (arXiv:1306.3837), and in some cases by Guichard-Wienhard (arXiv:1108.0733). For $G$-Fuchsian representations and their Anosov deformations, where $G$ is simple, we compute the homology of the domains of discontinuity and of the quotient manifolds. For $G$-Fuchsian and $G$-quasi-Fuchsian representations in simple $G$ of rank at least two, we show that the quotient manifolds are not K\"{a}hler. We also describe the Picard groups of these quotient manifolds, compute the cohomology of line bundles on them, and show that for $G$ of sufficiently large rank these manifolds admit nonconstant meromorphic functions. In a final section, we apply our topological results to several explicit families of domains and derive closed formulas for topological invariants in some cases. We also show that the quotient manifold for a $G$-Fuchsian representation in $\mathrm{PSL}_3(\mathbb{C})$ is a fiber bundle over a surface, and we conjecture that this holds for all simple $G$.

Hitchin harmonic maps are immersions

In 1992, Hitchin used his theory of Higgs bundles to construct an important family of representations of the fundamental group of a closed, oriented surface of genus at least two into the split real form of a complex adjoint simple Lie group. These Hitchin representations comprise a component of the space of conjugacy classes of all such representations and are deformations of the irreducible Fuchsian representations which uniformize the surface. For any choice of marked complex structure on the surface and any Hitchin representation, we show that the corresponding equivariant harmonic map from the universal cover into the symmetric space is an immersion. Pulling back the Riemannian metric on the symmetric space, we construct a map from the space of Hitchin representations to the space of isotopy classes of Riemannian metrics on the surface. As an application of this procedure, we obtain a new lower bound on the exponential growth rate of orbits in the symmetric space under the action of the image of a Hitchin representation.

Entropy, minimal surfaces, and negatively curved manifolds

In 2004, Taubes introduced the space of minimal hyperbolic germs with elements consisting of the first and second fundamental form of an equivariant immersed minimal disk in hyperbolic 3-space. Herein, we initiate a further study of this space by studying the behavior of a dynamically defined function which records the entropy of the geodesic flow on the associated Riemannian surface. We provide a useful estimate on this function which, in particular, yields a new proof of Bowen's theorem on the rigidity of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of quasi-Fuchsian groups. These follow from new lower bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set which allow us to give a quantitative version of Bowen's rigidity theorem. To demonstrate the strength of the techniques, these results are generalized to convex-cocompact surface groups acting on $n$-dimensional CAT$(-1)$ Riemannian manifolds.

Domains of discontinuity for almost-Fuchsian Groups

An almost-Fuchsian group is a quasi-Fuchsian group such that the quotient hyperbolic manifold contains a closed incompressible minimal surface with principal curvatures contained in (-1,1). We show that the domain of discontinuity of an almost-Fuchsian group contains many balls of a fixed spherical radius in the visual boundary of hyperbolic 3-space. This yields a necessary condition for a quasi-Fuchsian group to be almost-Fuchsian which involves only conformal geometry. As an application, we prove that there are no doubly-degenerate geometric limits of almost-Fuchsian groups.
