A new construction of $c=1$ Virasoro blocks

We introduce a nonabelianization map for conformal blocks, which relates $c=1$ Virasoro blocks on a Riemann surface $C$ to Heisenberg blocks on a branched double cover $\widetilde{C}$ of $C$. The nonabelianization map uses the datum of a spectral network on $C$. It gives new formulas for Virasoro blocks in terms of fermion correlation functions determined by the Heisenberg block. The nonabelianization map also intertwines with the action of Verlinde loop operators, and can be used to construct eigenblocks. This leads to new Kyiv-type formulas and regularized Fredholm determinant formulas for $\tau$-functions.

WKB asymptotics of Stokes matrices, spectral curves and rhombus inequalities

We consider an $n\times n$ system of ODEs on $\mathbb{P}^1$ with a simple pole $A$ at $z=0$ and a double pole $u={\rm diag}(u_1, \dots, u_n)$ at $z=\infty$. This is the simplest situation in which the monodromy data of the system are described by upper and lower triangular Stokes matrices $S_\pm$, and we impose reality conditions which imply $S_-=S_+^\dagger$. We study leading WKB exponents of Stokes matrices in parametrizations given by generalized minors and by spectral coordinates, and we show that for $u$ on the caterpillar line (which corresponds to the limit $(u_{j+1}-u_j)/(u_j - u_{j-1}) \to \infty$ for $j=2, \cdots, n-1$), the real parts of these exponents are given by periods of certain cycles on the degenerate spectral curve $\Gamma(u_{\rm cat}(t), A)$. These cycles admit unique deformations for $u$ near the caterpillar line. Using the spectral network theory, we give for $n=2$, and $n=3$ exact WKB predictions for asymptotics of generalized minors in terms of periods of these cycles. Boalch's theorem from Poisson geometry implies that real parts of leading WKB exponents satisfy the rhombus (or interlacing) inequalities. We show that these inequalities are in correspondence with finite webs of the canonical foliation on the root curve $\Gamma^r(u, A)$, and that they follow from the positivity of the corresponding periods. We conjecture that a similar mechanism applies for $n>3$. We also outline the relation of the spectral coordinates with the cluster structures considered by Goncharov-Shen, and with ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetric quantum field theories in dimension four associated with some simple quivers.

Commuting Line Defects At $q^N=1$

We explain the physical origin of a curious property of algebras $\mathcal{A}_\mathfrak{q}$ which encode the rotation-equivariant fusion ring of half-BPS line defects in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric quantum field theories. These algebras are a quantization of the algebras of holomorphic functions on the three-dimensional Coulomb branch of the SQFTs, with deformation parameter $\log \mathfrak{q}$. They are known to acquire a large center, canonically isomorphic to the undeformed algebra, whenever $\mathfrak{q}$ is a root of unity. We give a physical explanation of this fact. We also generalize the construction to characterize the action of this center in the $\mathcal{A}_\mathfrak{q}$-modules associated to three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ boundary conditions. Finally, we use dualities to relate this construction to a construction in the Kapustin-Witten twist of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauge theory. These considerations give simple physical explanations of certain properties of quantized skein algebras and cluster varieties, and quantum groups, when the deformation parameter is a root of unity.

3d spectral networks and classical Chern-Simons theory

We define the notion of spectral network on manifolds of dimension $\le 3$. For a manifold $X$ equipped with a spectral network, we construct equivalences between Chern-Simons invariants of flat ${\mathrm {SL}}(2,{\mathbb C})$-bundles over $X$ and Chern-Simons invariants of flat ${\mathbb C}^\times$-bundles over ramified double covers $\widetilde X$. Applications include a new viewpoint on dilogarithmic formulas for Chern-Simons invariants of flat ${\mathrm {SL}}(2,{\mathbb C})$-bundles over triangulated 3-manifolds, and an explicit description of Chern-Simons lines of flat ${\mathrm {SL}}(2,{\mathbb C})$-bundles over triangulated surfaces. Our constructions heavily exploit the locality of Chern-Simons invariants, expressed in the language of extended (invertible) topological field theory.

Exponential Networks, WKB and Topological String

We propose a connection between 3d-5d exponential networks and exact WKB for difference equations associated to five dimensional Seiberg-Witten curves, or equivalently, to quantum mirror curves to toric Calabi-Yau threefolds $X$: the singularities in the Borel planes of local solutions to such difference equations correspond to central charges of 3d-5d BPS KK-modes. It follows that there should be distinguished local solutions of the difference equation in each domain of the complement of the exponential network, and these solutions jump at the walls of the network. We verify and explore this picture in two simple examples of 3d-5d systems, corresponding to taking the toric Calabi-Yau $X$ to be either $\mathbb{C}^3$ or the resolved conifold. We provide the full list of local solutions in each sector of the Borel plane and in each domain of the complement of the exponential network, and find that local solutions in disconnected domains correspond to non-perturbative open topological string amplitudes on $X$ with insertions of branes at different positions of the toric diagram. We also study the Borel summation of the closed refined topological string free energy on $X$ and the corresponding non-perturbative effects, finding that central charges of 5d BPS KK-modes are related to the singularities in the Borel plane.

The quantum UV-IR map for line defects in $\mathfrak{gl}(3)$-type class $S$ theories

We consider the quantum UV-IR map for line defects in class $S$ theories of $\mathfrak{gl}(3)$-type. This map computes the protected spin character which counts framed BPS states with spin for the bulk-defect system. We give a geometric method of computing this map motivated by the physics of five-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, and compute it explicitly in various examples. As a spin-off we propose a new way of computing a certain specialization of the HOMFLY polynomial for links in $\mathbb{R}^3$, as a sum over BPS webs attached to the link.

Exact WKB methods in $SU(2)$ $N_f=1$

We study in detail the Schr\"{o}dinger equation corresponding to the four dimensional $SU(2)$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD theory with one flavour. We calculate the Voros symbols, or quantum periods, in four different ways: Borel summation of the WKB series, direct computation of Wronskians of exponentially decaying solutions, the TBA equations of Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke/Gaiotto, and instanton counting. We make computations by all of these methods, finding good agreement. We also study the exact quantization condition for the spectrum, and we compute the Fredholm determinant of the inverse of the Schr\"odinger operator using the TS/ST correspondence and Zamolodchikov's TBA, again finding good agreement. In addition, we explore two aspects of the relationship between singularities of the Borel transformed WKB series and BPS states: BPS states of the 4d theory are related to singularities in the Borel transformed WKB series for the quantum periods, and BPS states of a coupled 2d+4d system are related to singularities in the Borel transformed WKB series for local solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation.

Deformations of surface defect moduli spaces

Given a 4d ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetric theory with an ${\mathcal N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric surface defect, a marginal perturbation of the bulk theory induces a complex structure deformation of the defect moduli space. We describe a concrete way of computing this deformation using the bulk-defect OPE.

Factorized class $S$ theories and surface defects

It is known that some theories of class $S$ are actually factorized into multiple decoupled nontrivial four-dimensional $N=2$ theories. We propose a way of constructing examples of this phenomenon using the physics of half-BPS surface defects, and check that it works in one simple example: it correctly reproduces a known realization of two copies of $N=2$ superconformal $SU(2)$ QCD, describing this factorized theory as a class $S$ theory of type $A_3$ on a five-punctured sphere with a twist line. Separately, we also present explicit checks that the Coulomb branch of a putative factorized class $S$ theory has the expected product structure, in two examples.

Opers and nonabelian Hodge: numerical studies

We present numerical experiments that test the predictions of a conjecture of Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke and Gaiotto concerning the monodromy map for opers, the nonabelian Hodge correspondence, and the restriction of Hitchin's hyperk\"ahler metric to the Hitchin section. These experiments are conducted in the setting of polynomial holomorphic differentials on the complex plane, where the predictions take the form of conjectural formulas for the Stokes data and the Hitchin metric tensor. Overall, the results of our experiments support the conjecture.

The dilogarithm and abelian Chern-Simons

We construct the (enhanced Rogers) dilogarithm function from the spin Chern-Simons invariant of C*-connections. This leads to geometric proofs of basic dilogarithm identities and a geometric context for other properties, such as the branching structure.

$q$-nonabelianization for line defects

We consider the $q$-nonabelianization map, which maps links $L$ in a 3-manifold $M$ to links $\widetilde{L}$ in a branched $N$-fold cover $\widetilde{M}$. In quantum field theory terms, $q$-nonabelianization is the UV-IR map relating two different sorts of defect: in the UV we have the six-dimensional $(2,0)$ superconformal field theory of type $\mathfrak{gl}(N)$ on $M \times \mathbb{R}^{2,1}$, and we consider surface defects placed on $L \times \{x^4 = x^5 = 0\}$; in the IR we have the $(2,0)$ theory of type $\mathfrak{gl}(1)$ on $\widetilde{M} \times \mathbb{R}^{2,1}$, and put the defects on $\widetilde{L} \times \{x^4 = x^5 = 0\}$. In the case $M = \mathbb{R}^3$, $q$-nonabelianization computes the Jones polynomial of a link, or its analogue associated to the group $U(N)$. In the case $M = C \times \mathbb{R}$, when the projection of $L$ to $C$ is a simple non-contractible loop, $q$-nonabelianization computes the protected spin character for framed BPS states in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories of class $S$. In the case $N=2$ and $M = C \times \mathbb{R}$, we give a concrete construction of the $q$-nonabelianization map. The construction uses the data of the WKB foliations associated to a holomorphic covering $\widetilde{C} \to C$.

Exact WKB and abelianization for the $T_3$ equation

We describe the exact WKB method from the point of view of abelianization, both for Schr\"odinger operators and for their higher-order analogues (opers). The main new example which we consider is the "$T_3$ equation," an order $3$ equation on the thrice-punctured sphere, with regular singularities at the punctures. In this case the exact WKB analysis leads to consideration of a new sort of Darboux coordinate system on a moduli space of flat $\mathrm{SL}(3)$-connections. We give the simplest example of such a coordinate system, and verify numerically that in these coordinates the monodromy of the $T_3$ equation has the expected asymptotic properties. We also briefly revisit the Schr\"odinger equation with cubic potential and the Mathieu equation from the point of view of abelianization.

BPS states in the Minahan-Nemeschansky $E_7$ theory

We use the method of spectral networks to calculate BPS degeneracies in the Minahan-Nemeschansky $E_7$ theory, as representations of the $E_7$ flavor symmetry. Our results provide another example of a pattern noticed earlier in the Minahan-Nemeschansky $E_6$ theory: when the electromagnetic charge is $n$ times a primitive charge, the BPS index is a positive integer multiple of $(-1)^{n+1} n$. We also calculate BPS degeneracies in the Minahan-Nemeschansky $E_6$ theory for larger charges than were previously computed.

On the BPS Spectrum of the Rank-1 Minahan-Nemeschansky Theories

The F-theory realization of the rank-1 Minahan Nemeschansky (MN) $E_6$, $E_7$ and $E_8$ theories leads to a description of the BPS states on the Coulomb branch in terms of Type IIB $(p,q)$-string networks. Subject to a simple ansatz for the types of networks which can occur, we study the representations of the flavor symmetry group which occur in the BPS spectrum. The results we find for the $E_6$ and $E_7$ theories are in perfect agreement with previous calculations by other methods (in particular, we find that arbitrarily large representations occur), but our scheme is easier to implement and more computationally efficient. The string network picture also gives a possible explanation of the experimental observation that in rank-1 MN theories, BPS states whose charge is $n$ times a primitive charge occur with BPS index divisible by $(-1)^{n+1} n$.

Secondary products in supersymmetric field theory

The product of local operators in a topological quantum field theory in dimension greater than one is commutative, as is more generally the product of extended operators of codimension greater than one. In theories of cohomological type these commutative products are accompanied by secondary operations, which capture linking or braiding of operators, and behave as (graded) Poisson brackets with respect to the primary product. We describe the mathematical structures involved and illustrate this general phenomenon in a range of physical examples arising from supersymmetric field theories in spacetime dimension two, three, and four. In the Rozansky-Witten twist of three-dimensional N=4 theories, this gives an intrinsic realization of the holomorphic symplectic structure of the moduli space of vacua. We further give a simple mathematical derivation of the assertion that introducing an Omega-background precisely deformation quantizes this structure. We then study the secondary product structure of extended operators, which subsumes that of local operators but is often much richer. We calculate interesting cases of secondary brackets of line operators in Rozansky-Witten theories and in four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theories, measuring the noncommutativity of the spherical category in the geometric Langlands program.

Asymptotics of Hitchin's metric on the Hitchin section

We consider Hitchin's hyperk\"ahler metric $g$ on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}$ of degree zero $\mathrm{SL}(2)$-Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface. It has been conjectured that, when one goes to infinity along a generic ray in $\mathcal{M}$, $g$ converges to an explicit "semiflat" metric $g^{\mathrm{sf}}$, with an exponential rate of convergence. We show that this is indeed the case for the restriction of $g$ to the tangent bundle of the Hitchin section $\mathcal{B} \subset \mathcal{M}$.

From $S^1$-fixed points to $\mathcal{W}$-algebra representations

We study a set $\mathcal{M}_{K,N}$ parameterizing filtered $SL(K)$-Higgs bundles over $\mathbb{CP}^1$ with an irregular singularity at $z = \infty$, such that the eigenvalues of the Higgs field grow like $\lvert \lambda \rvert \sim \lvert z ^{N/K} \mathrm{d} z \rvert$, where $K$ and $N$ are coprime. $\mathcal{M}_{K,N}$ carries a $\mathbb{C}^\times$-action analogous to the famous $\mathbb{C}^\times$-action introduced by Hitchin on the moduli spaces of Higgs bundles over compact curves. The construction of this $\mathbb{C}^\times$-action on $\mathcal{M}_{K,N}$ involves the rotation automorphism of the base $\mathbb{CP}^1$. We classify the fixed points of this $\mathbb{C}^\times$-action, and exhibit a curious $1$-$1$ correspondence between these fixed points and certain representations of the vertex algebra $\mathcal{W}_K$; in particular we have the relation $\mu = \frac{1}{12} \left(K - 1 - c_{\mathrm{eff}} \right)$, where $\mu$ is a regulated version of the $L^2$ norm of the Higgs field, and $c_{\mathrm{eff}}$ is the effective Virasoro central charge of the corresponding $W$-algebra representation. We also discuss a Bialynicki-Birula-type stratification of $\mathcal{M}_{K,N}$, where the strata are labeled by isomorphism classes of the underlying filtered vector bundles.
