The Equivalence Principle in the Dark Sector in light of DESI

Recent measurements of the distribution of galaxies by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) are in mild tension with a standard $Λ$-Cold Dark Matter cosmological model inferred from the anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) when extrapolated to low redshifts. Several solutions to explain this discrepancy in terms of new physics have been put forward, notably from new dynamics in a complex Dark Sector. Here we report on a resolution to this discrepancy that postulates that the inertial and gravitational masses of dark matter particles are not the same. Our best fit to CMB data combined either with Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) and Full Shape (FS) data from DESI DR1 (Data Release 1), or with BAO DR2 data alone, suggests the presence of a new long-range force in the Dark Sector with strength of $β\sim 0.5\% $ relative to gravity, at the $\sim 2.5σ$ level. A preliminary analysis combining FS DR1 and BAO DR2 data confirms the statistical power of DR2 and raises the evidence for dark forces to $\sim 3σ$, albeit ignoring the not yet available cross-correlation between the two datasets.

A central limit theorem for nonlinear conservative SPDEs

We prove a central limit theorem characterizing the small noise fluctuations of stochastic PDEs of fluctuating hydrodynamics type. The results apply to the case of nonlinear and potentially degenerate diffusions and irregular noise coefficients including the square root. In several cases, the fluctuations of the solutions agree to first order with the fluctuations of certain interacting particle systems about their hydrodynamic limits.

On the fluctuations of an SDE system modelling grid cells

Several differential equation models have been proposed to explain the formation of patterns characteristic of the grid cell network. Understanding the effect of noise on these models is one of the key open questions in computational neuroscience. In the present work, we continue the analysis of an SDE system commonly proposed for this aim, which we initiated in a previous paper. We show that the fluctuations of the empirical measure associated to the particle system around its mean field limit converge to the solution of a Langevin SPDE. The interaction between different columns of neurons along the cortex prescribes a peculiar scaling regime.

Porous media equations with nonlinear gradient noise and Dirichlet boundary conditions

We establish pathwise existence of solutions for porous media and fast diffusion equations with nonlinear gradient noise, in the full regime $m\in(0,\infty)$ and for any initial data in $L^2$. Moreover, if the initial data is positive, solutions are pathwise unique. In turn, the solution map of these equations is a continuous function of the driving noise and it generates an associated random dynamical system. Finally, in the regime $m\in\{1\}\cup(2,\infty)$, all the aforementioned results also hold for signed initial data.

The mean field limit of stochastic differential equation systems modelling grid cells

Several differential equation models have been proposed to explain the formation of patterns characteristic of the grid cell network. Understanding the robustness of these patterns with respect to noise is one of the key open questions in computational neuroscience. In the present work, we analyze a family of stochastic differential systems modelling grid cell networks. Furthermore, the well-posedness of the associated McKean--Vlasov and Fokker--Planck equations, describing the average behavior of the networks, is established. Finally, we rigorously prove the mean field limit of these systems and provide a sharp rate of convergence for their empirical measures.
