Mass of the Frobenius functional on small balls

We show that for a co-compact lattice in a semi-simple quasi-split real group and a fixed abstractly generic automorphic representation, Frobenius functional assigns small mass to small balls in the Orbit Method picture of P. Nelson and A. Venkatesh (Acta Math., 226, (2021), 1-209).

Periods and global invariants of automorphic representations

We consider periods of automorphic representations of adele groups defined by integrals along Gelfand subgroups. We define natural maps between local components of such periods and construct corresponding global maps using automorphic $L$-functions. This leads to an introduction of a global invariant of an automorphic representation arising from two such periods. We compute this invariant in some cases.

Lattice points counting and bounds on periods of Maass forms

We provide a "soft" proof for non-trivial bounds on spherical, hyperbolic and unipotent Fourier coefficients of a fixed Maass form for a general co-finite lattice $Γ$ in $PGL(2,R)$. We use the amplification method based on the Airy type phenomenon for corresponding matrix coefficients and an effective Selberg type pointwise asymptotic for the lattice points counting in various homogeneous spaces for $PGL(2,R)$.

Multiple Dirichlet Series and Shifted Convolutions

We define, and obtain the meromorphic continuation of, shifted Rankin-Selberg convolutions in one and two variables. As sample applications, this continuation is used to obtain estimates for single and double shifted sums and a Burgess-type bound for $L$-series associated to modular forms of arbitrary central character. Further applications are furnished by subsequent works by the authors and their colleagues.

Nodal domains of Maass forms II

In Part I we gave a polynomial growth lower-bound for the number of nodal domains of a Hecke-Maass cuspform in a compact part of the modular surface, assuming a Lindelöf hypothesis. That was a consequence of a topological argument and known subconvexity estimates, together with new sharp lower-bound restriction theorems for the Maass forms. This paper deals with the same question for general (compact or not) arithmetic surfaces which have a reflective symmetry. The topological argument is extended and representation theoretic methods are needed for the restriction theorems, together with results of Waldspurger. Various explicit examples are given and studied.

Nodal domains of Maass forms I

This paper deals with some questions that have received a lot of attention since they were raised by Hejhal and Rackner in their 1992 numerical computations of Maass forms. We establish sharp upper and lower bounds for the $L^2$-restrictions of these forms to certain curves on the modular surface. These results, together with the Lindelof Hypothesis and known subconvex $L^\infty$-bounds are applied to prove that locally the number of nodal domains of such a form goes to infinity with its eigenvalue.

Estimates of triple products of automorphic functions II

We prove a sharp bound for the average value of the triple product of modular functions for the Hecke subgroup Γ_0(N). Our result is an extension of the main result in {Bernstein&Reznikov-2004} to a fixed cuspidal representation of the adele group PGL(2,A).

Geodesic restrictions for the Casimir operator

We consider the hyperbolic Casimir operator C defined on the tangent sphere bundle SY of a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface Y. We prove a nontrivial bound on the L^2-norm of the restriction of eigenfunctions of C to certain natural hypersurfaces in SY. The result that we obtain goes beyond known (sharp) local bounds of L. Subconvexity bounds for triple L-functions and representation theory

We describe a new method to estimate the trilinear period on automorphic representations of PGL(2,R). Such a period gives rise to a special value of the triple L-function. We prove a bound for the triple period which amounts to a subconvexity bound for the corresponding special value of the triple L-function. Our method is based on the study of the analytic structure of the corresponding unique trilinear functional on unitary representations of PGL(2,R).

Norms of geodesic restrictions for eigenfunctions on hyperbolic surfaces and representation theory

We consider restrictions along closed geodesics and geodesic circles for eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface. We obtain a non-trivial bound on the L^2-norm of such restrictions as the eigenvalue tends to infinity. We use methods from the theory of automorphic functions and in particular the uniqueness of invariant functionals on irreducible unitary representations of PGL(2,R).

Rankin-Selberg without unfolding and bounds for spherical Fourier coefficients of Maass forms

We use the uniqueness of various invariant functionals on irreducible unitary representations of PGL(2,R) in order to deduce the classical Rankin-Selberg identity for the sum of Fourier coefficients of Maass cusp forms and its new anisotropic analog. We deduce from these formulas non-trivial bounds for the corresponding unipotent and spherical Fourier coefficients of Maass forms. As an application we obtain a subconvexity bound for certain L-functions. Our main tool is the notion of Gelfand pair.

Periods, subconvexity of L-functions and representation theory

We describe a new method to estimate the trilinear period on automorphic representations of PGL(2,R). Such a period gives rise to a special value of the triple L-function. We prove a bound for the triple period which amounts to a subconvexity bound for the corresponding special value. Our method is based on the study of the analytic structure of the corresponding unique trilinear functional on unitary representations of PGL(2,R).

Microlocal lifts of eigenfunctions on hyperbolic surfaces and trilinear invariant functionals

S. Zelditch introduced an equivariant version of a pseudo-differential calculus on a hyperbolic Riemann surface. We recast his construction in terms of trilinear invariant functionals on irreducible unitary representations of PGL(2,R). This allows us to use certain properties of these functionals in the study of the action of pseudo-differential operators on eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on hyperbolic Riemann surfaces.

Estimates of automorphic functions

We present a new method of estimating trilinear period for automorphic representations of SL(2,R). The method is based on the uniqueness principle in representation theory. We show how to separate the exponentially decaying factor in the triple period from the essential automorphic factor which behaves polynomially. We also describe a general method which gives an estimate on the average of the automorphic factor and thus prove a convexity bound for the triple period.

Analytic continuation of representations and estimates of automorphic forms

Properties of analytic vectors in representations of SL(2,R) are used to give new bounds for the triple products recently considered by P. Sarnak. A conjecture of Sarnak about such products is proved. The results of this paper generalize results of A. Good and M. Jutila about special cases, but the techniques are entirely different. One consequence of these results is a new estimate of the magnitude of the Fourier coefficients of cusp forms for non-arithmetic sub-groups of SL(2,R).
