Low-energy potential scattering in two and three dimensions

Conditions are established for the existence of a scattering length and an effective range in the low-energy expansion of the S-wave phase-shift of a central potential in two and three dimensions. The behavior of the phase-shift as a function of the momentum is also derived for longer-range power-law potentials which do not fulfill these conditions.

Can one improve the Froissart bound?

We explain why we hope that the Froissart bound can be improved, either qualitatively or, more likely, quantitatively, by making a better use of unitarity, in particular elastic unitarity. In other instances (Gribov's theorem) elastic unitarity played a crucial role. A preliminary requirement for this is to work with an appropriate average of the cross-section, to make the problem well defined. This is possible, without destroying the Lukaszuk--Martin bound.

The status of the heavy quark systems

We review various inequalities on the order and the spacing of energy levels, wave function at the origin, etc... which were obtained since 1977 in the framework of the Schrodinger equation and applied to quarkonium and also to muonic atoms and alcaline atoms. We also present a fit of mesons and baryons made of b, c, s quarks and antiquarks, keeping the 1981 parameters and comparing with present experimental data.

On the stability of four legged tables

We prove that a perfect four-feet square table, posed in a continuous irregular ground with a local slope of at most 15 degrees can be put in equilibrium on the ground by a "rotation" of less than 90 degrees. We also discuss the case of non-square tables and make the conjecture that equilibrium can be found if the four feet are on a circle

Behaviour of the wave function near the origin in the radial case

We give one more proof in two and three space dimensions that the irregular solution of the Schrodinger equation, for zero angular momentum, is in fact the solution of an equation containing an extra 'delta function'. We propose another criterium to eliminate the irregular solution which is to require the validity of the virial theorem of which we give a general proof in the classical and quantum cases.

Universality of Low-Energy Scattering in 2+1 Dimensions: The Non Symmetric Case

For a very large class of potentials, $V(\vec{x})$, $\vec{x}\in R^2$, we prove the universality of the low energy scattering amplitude, $f(\vec{k}', \vec{k})$. The result is $f=\sqrt{\fracπ{2}}\{1/log k)+O(1/(log k)^2)$. The only exceptions occur if $V$ happens to have a zero energy bound state. Our new result includes as a special subclass the case of rotationally symmetric potentials, $V(|\vec{x}|)$.

Bound states in two spatial dimensions in the non-central case

We derive a bound on the total number of negative energy bound states in a potential in two spatial dimensions by using an adaptation of the Schwinger method to derive the Birman-Schwinger bound in three dimensions. Specifically, counting the number of bound states in a potential gV for g=1 is replaced by counting the number of g_i's for which zero energy bound states exist, and then the kernel of the integral equation for the zero-energy wave functon is symmetrized. One of the keys of the solution is the replacement of an inhomogeneous integral equation by a homogeneous integral equation.

Investigation of the Role of Elastic Unitarity in High-Energy Scattering: Gribov's Theorem and the Froissart Bound

We re-examine V. Gribov's theorem of 1960 according to which the total cross-section cannot approach a finite non-zero limit with, at the same time, a diffraction peak having a finite slope. We are very close to proving by an explicit counter-example that elastic unitarity in the elastic region is an essential ingredient of the proof. By analogy, we raise the question of the saturation of the Froissart-Martin bound, for which no examples incorporating elastic unitarity exist at the present time.

On the Stability Domain of Systems of Three Arbitrary Charges

We present results on the stability of quantum systems consisting of a negative charge $-q_1$ with mass $m_{1}$ and two positive charges $q_2$ and $q_3$, with masses $m_{2}$ and $m_{3}$, respectively. We show that, for given masses $m_{i}$, each instability domain is convex in the plane of the variables $(q_{1}/q_{2}, q_{1}/q_{3})$. A new proof is given of the instability of muonic ions $(α, p, μ^-)$. We then study stability in some critical regimes where $q_3\ll q_2$: stability is sometimes restricted to large values of some mass ratios; the behaviour of the stability frontier is established to leading order in $q_3/q_2$. Finally we present some conjectures about the shape of the stability domain, both for given masses and varying charges, and for given charges and varying masses.

Universality of low-energy scattering in (2+1) dimensions

We prove that, in (2+1) dimensions, the S-wave phase shift, $ \delta_0(k)$, k being the c.m. momentum, vanishes as either $\delta_0 \to {c\over \ln (k/m)} or \delta_0 \to O(k^2)$ as $k\to 0$. The constant $c$ is universal and $c=\pi/2$. This result is established first in the framework of the Schr\"odinger equation for a large class of potentials, second for a massive field theory from proved analyticity and unitarity, and, finally, we look at perturbation theory in $\phi_3^4$ and study its relation to our non-perturbative result. The remarkable fact here is that in n-th order the perturbative amplitude diverges like $(\ln k)^n$ as $k\to 0$, while the full amplitude vanishes as $(\ln k)^{-1}$. We show how these two facts can be reconciled.

Stability of Three- and Four-Body Coulomb Systems

We discuss the stability of three- and four-particle system interacting by pure Coulomb interactions, as a function of the masses and charges of the particles. We present a certain number of general properties which allow to answer a certain number of questions without or with less numerical calculations.

Spacings of Quarkonium Levels with the Same Principal Quantum Number

The spacings between bound-state levels of the Schr\"odinger equation with the same principal quantum number $N$ but orbital angular momenta $\ell$ differing by unity are found to be nearly equal for a wide range of power potentials $V = \lambda r^\nu$, with $E_{N \ell} \approx F(\nu, N) - G(\nu,N) \ell$. Semiclassical approximations are in accord with this behavior. The result is applied to estimates of masses for quarkonium levels which have not yet been observed, including the 2P $c \bar c$ states and the 1D $b \bar b$ states.
