Fractional statistics and duality: strong tunneling behavior of edge states of quantum Hall liquids in the Jain sequence

While the values for the fractional charge and fractional statistics coincide for fractional Hall (FQH) states in the Laughlin sequence, they do not for more general FQH states, such as those in the Jain sequence. This mismatch leads to additional phase factors in the weak coupling expansion for tunneling between edge states which alter the nature of the strong tunneling limit. We show here how to construct a weak-strong coupling duality for generalized FQH states with simple unreconstructed edges. The correct dualization of quasiparticles into integer charged fermions is a consistency requirement for a theory of FQH edge states with a simple edge. We show that this duality also applies for weakly reconstructed edges.

Fermion Chern Simons Theory of Hierarchical Fractional Quantum Hall States

We present an effective Chern-Simons theory for the bulk fully polarized fractional quantum Hall (FQH) hierarchical states constructed as daughters of general states of the Jain series, {\it i. e.} as FQH states of the quasi-particles or quasi-holes of Jain states. We discuss the stability of these new states and present two reasonable stability criteria. We discuss the theory of their edge states which follows naturally from this bulk theory. We construct the operators that create elementary excitations, and discuss the scaling behavior of the tunneling conductance in different situations. Under the assumption that the edge states of these fully polarized hierarchical states are unreconstructed and unresolved, we find that the differential conductance $G$ for tunneling of electrons from a Fermi liquid into {\em any} hierarchical Jain FQH states has the scaling behavior $G\sim V^α$ with the universal exponent $α=1/ν$, where $ν$ is the filling fraction of the hierarchical state. Finally, we explore alternative ways of constructing FQH states with the same filling fractions as partially polarized states, and conclude that this is not possible within our approach.

Effective field theory for the bulk and edge states of quantum Hall states in unpolarized single layer and bilayer systems

We present an effective theory for the bulk Fractional Quantum Hall states in spin-polarized bilayer and spin-1/2 single layer two-dimensional electron gases (2DEG) in high magnetic fields consistent with the requirement of global gauge invariance on systems with periodic boundary conditions. We derive the theory for the edge states that follows naturally from this bulk theory. We find that the minimal effective theory contains two propagating edge modes that carry charge and energy, and two non-propagating topological modes responsible for the statistics of the excitations. We give a detailed description of the effective theory for the spin-singlet states, the symmetric bilayer states and for the $(m,m,m)$ states. We calculate explicitly, for a number of cases of interest, the operators that create the elementary excitations, their bound states, and the electron. We also discuss the scaling behavior of the tunneling conductances in different situations: internal tunneling, tunneling between identical edges and tunneling into a FQH state from a Fermi liquid.

Universal structure of the edge states of the fractional quantum Hall states

We present an effective theory for the bulk fractional quantum Hall states on the Jain sequences on closed surfaces and show that it has a universal form whose structure does not change from fraction to fraction. The structure of this effective theory follows from the condition of global consistency of the flux attachment transformation on closed surfaces. We derive the theory of the edge states on a disk that follows naturally from this globally consistent theory on a torus. We find that, for a fully polarized two-dimensional electron gas, the edge states for all the Jain filling fractions $ν=p/(2np+1)$ have only one propagating edge field that carries both energy and charge, and two non-propagating edge fields of topological origin that are responsible for the statistics of the excitations. Explicit results are derived for the electron and quasiparticle operators and for their propagators at the edge. We show that these operators create states with the correct charge and statistics. It is found that the tunneling density of states for all the Jain states scales with frequency as $|ω|^{(1-ν)/ν}$.

Fermionic Chern-Simons Field Theory for the Fractional Hall Effect

We review the fermionic Chern-Simons field theory for the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect (FQHE). We show that in this field theoretic approach to the problem of interacting electrons moving in a plane in the presence of an external magnetic field, the FQHE states appear naturally as the semiclassical states of the theory. In this framework, the FQHE states are the unique ground states of a system of electrons on a fixed geometry. The excitation spectrum is fully gapped and these states can be viewed as infrared stable fixed points of the system. It is shown that the long distance, low energy properties of the system are described exactly by this theory. It is further shown that, in this limit, the actual ground state wave function has the Laughlin form. We also discuss the application of this theory to the problem of the FQHE in bilayers and in unpolarized single layer systems.

Interacting electrons on a half line coupled to impurities

We generalize the bosonization methods for systems in the half line that we discussed elsewhere, to study the effects of interactions on electronic systems coupled to impurities. We introduce a model for a quantum wire coupled with a quantum dot by a purely capacitive interaction. We show that the effect on the quantum wire is a dynamical boundary condition which reflects the charge fluctuations of the quantum dot. Special attention is given to the role of the fermion boundary conditions and their interplay with the electron interactions on the bosonized effective theory.

Exact effective action for fermions in one dimension with backscattering at a boundary

We report exact results for the partition function for free Dirac fermions on a half line with physically sensible boundary conditions. An exact effective action for general backscattering amplitudes is derived. The action also includes the effects of both a (time-dependent) forward scattering amplitude and a dynamical chiral twist of the fermion boundary conditions. For a small backscattering amplitude, the effective action has the expected boundary Sine-Gordon form. We discuss applications of our results to one-dimensional Fermi systems with local backscattering.

Bosonization rules in $1/2 +1$ dimensions

We derive the bosonization rules for free fermions on a half-line with physically sensible boundary conditions for Luttinger fermions. We use path-integral methods to calculate the bosonized fermionic currents on the half-line and derive their commutation relations for a system with a boundary. We compute the fermion determinant of the fermionic fluctuations for a system with a boundary using Forman's approach. We find that the degrees of freedom induced at the boundary do not to modify the commutation relations of the bulk. We give an explicit derivation of the bosonization rules for the fermion operators for a system with boundaries. We derive a set of bosonization rules for the Fermi operators which include the explicit effect of the boundaries and of boundary degrees of freedom. As a byproduct, we calculate the one-particle Green's function and determine the effects of the boundaries on its analytic structure.

Fermionic Chern-Simons theory for the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in Bilayers

We generalize the fermion Chern-Simons theory for the Fractional Hall Effect (FQHE) which we developed before, to the case of bilayer systems. We study the complete dynamic response of these systems and predict the experimentally accessible optical properties. In general, for the so called $(m, m, n)$ states, we find that the spectrum of collective excitations has a gap, and the wave function has the Jastrow-Slater form, with the exponents determined by the coefficients $m$, and $n$. We also find that the $(m,m,m)$ states, {\it i.~e.~}, those states whose filling fraction is $1\over m$, have a gapless mode which may be related with the spontaneous appearance of the interlayer coherence. Our results also indicate that the gapless mode makes a contribution to the wave function of the $(m,m,m)$ states analogous to the phonon contribution to the wave function of superfluid $\rm{He}_4$. We calculate the Hall conductance, and the charge and statistics of the quasiparticles. We also present an $SU(2)$ generalization of this theory relevant to spin unpolarized or partially polarized single layers.

Chern_simons Theory of the Anisotropic Quantum Heisenberg Antiferromagnet on a Square Lattice

We consider the anisotropic quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet (with anisotropy $λ$) on a square lattice using a Chern-Simons (or Wigner-Jordan) approach. We show that the Average Field Approximation (AFA) yields a phase diagram with two phases: a Ne{è}l state for $λ>λ_c$ and a flux phase for $λ<λ_c$ separated by a second order transition at $λ_c<1$. We show that this phase diagram does not describe the $XY$ regime of the antiferromagnet. Fluctuations around the AFA induce relevant operators which yield the correct phase diagram. We find an equivalence between the antiferromagnet and a relativistic field theory of two self-interacting Dirac fermions coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field. The field theory has a phase diagram with the correct number of Goldstone modes in each regime and a phase transition at a critical coupling $λ^* > λ_c$. We identify this transition with the isotropic Heisenberg point. It has a non-vanishing Ne{\` e}l order parameter, which drops to zero discontinuously for $λ<λ^*$.

Response functions and Spectrum of Collective Excitations of Fractional Quantum Hall Effect Systems

We calculate the electromagnetic response functions of a Fractional Quantum Hall system within the framework of the fermion Chern-Simons theory for the Fractional Hall Effect (FQHE) which we developed before. Our results are valid in a semiclassical expansion around the average field approximation (AFA). We reexamine the AFA and the role of fluctuations. We argue that, order-\-by-\-order in the semiclassical expansion, the response functions obey the correct symmetry properties required by Galilean and Gauge Invariance and by the incompressibility of the fluid. In particular, we find that the low-momentum limit of the semiclassical approximation to the response functions is exact and that it saturates the $f$-sum rule.We obtain the spectrum of collective excitations of FQHE systems in the low-momentum limit. We find a rich spectrum of modes which includes a host of quasiparticle- quasihole bound states and, in general, two collective modes coalescing at the cyclotron frequency. The Hall conductance is obtained from the current-density correlation function, and it has the correct value already at the semiclassical level. We applied these results to the problem of the screening of external charges and fluxes by the electron fluid, and obtained asymptotic expressions of the charge and current density profiles, for different types of interactions. Finally, we reconsider the anyon superfluid within our scheme and derive the spectrum of collective modes for interacting hard-core bosons and semions. In addition to the gapless phase mode, we find a set of gapped collective modes.
