A New Class of Efficient Adaptive Filters for Online Nonlinear Modeling

Nonlinear models are known to provide excellent performance in real-world applications that often operate in non-ideal conditions. However, such applications often require online processing to be performed with limited computational resources. To address this problem, we propose a new class of efficient nonlinear models for online applications. The proposed algorithms are based on linear-in-the-parameters (LIP) nonlinear filters using functional link expansions. In order to make this class of functional link adaptive filters (FLAFs) efficient, we propose low-complexity expansions and frequency-domain adaptation of the parameters. Among this family of algorithms, we also define the partitioned-block frequency-domain FLAF, whose implementation is particularly suitable for online nonlinear modeling problems. We assess and compare frequency-domain FLAFs with different expansions providing the best possible tradeoff between performance and computational complexity. Experimental results prove that the proposed algorithms can be considered as an efficient and effective solution for online applications, such as the acoustic echo cancellation, even in the presence of adverse nonlinear conditions and with limited availability of computational resources.

CovidTracker: A comprehensive Covid-related social media dataset for NLP tasks

The Covid-19 pandemic presented an unprecedented global public health emergency, and concomitantly an unparalleled opportunity to investigate public responses to adverse social conditions. The widespread ability to post messages to social media platforms provided an invaluable outlet for such an outpouring of public sentiment, including not only expressions of social solidarity, but also the spread of misinformation and misconceptions around the effect and potential risks of the pandemic. This archive of message content therefore represents a key resource in understanding public responses to health crises, analysis of which could help to inform public policy interventions to better respond to similar events in future. We present a benchmark database of public social media postings from the United Kingdom related to the Covid-19 pandemic for academic research purposes, along with some initial analysis, including a taxonomy of key themes organised by keyword. This release supports the findings of a research study funded by the Scottish Government Chief Scientists' Office that aims to investigate social sentiment in order to understand the response to public health measures implemented during the pandemic.

FastAdaBelief: Improving Convergence Rate for Belief-based Adaptive Optimizers by Exploiting Strong Convexity

AdaBelief, one of the current best optimizers, demonstrates superior generalization ability compared to the popular Adam algorithm by viewing the exponential moving average of observed gradients. AdaBelief is theoretically appealing in that it has a data-dependent $O(\sqrt{T})$ regret bound when objective functions are convex, where $T$ is a time horizon. It remains however an open problem whether the convergence rate can be further improved without sacrificing its generalization ability. %on how to exploit strong convexity to further improve the convergence rate of AdaBelief. To this end, we make a first attempt in this work and design a novel optimization algorithm called FastAdaBelief that aims to exploit its strong convexity in order to achieve an even faster convergence rate. In particular, by adjusting the step size that better considers strong convexity and prevents fluctuation, our proposed FastAdaBelief demonstrates excellent generalization ability as well as superior convergence. As an important theoretical contribution, we prove that FastAdaBelief attains a data-dependant $O(\log T)$ regret bound, which is substantially lower than AdaBelief. On the empirical side, we validate our theoretical analysis with extensive experiments in both scenarios of strong and non-strong convexity on three popular baseline models. Experimental results are very encouraging: FastAdaBelief converges the quickest in comparison to all mainstream algorithms while maintaining an excellent generalization ability, in cases of both strong or non-strong convexity. FastAdaBelief is thus posited as a new benchmark model for the research community.

A Speech Intelligibility Enhancement Model based on Canonical Correlation and Deep Learning for Hearing-Assistive Technologies

Current deep learning (DL) based approaches to speech intelligibility enhancement in noisy environments are generally trained to minimise the distance between clean and enhanced speech features. These often result in improved speech quality however they suffer from a lack of generalisation and may not deliver the required speech intelligibility in everyday noisy situations. In an attempt to address these challenges, researchers have explored intelligibility-oriented (I-O) loss functions to train DL approaches for robust speech enhancement (SE). In this paper, we formulate a novel canonical correlation-based I-O loss function to more effectively train DL algorithms. Specifically, we present a fully convolutional SE model that uses a modified canonical-correlation based short-time objective intelligibility (CC-STOI) metric as a training cost function. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that exploits the integration of canonical correlation in an I-O based loss function for SE. Comparative experimental results demonstrate that our proposed CC-STOI based SE framework outperforms DL models trained with conventional STOI and distance-based loss functions, in terms of both standard objective and subjective evaluation measures when dealing with unseen speakers and noises.

A Novel Chaos-based Light-weight Image Encryption Scheme for Multi-modal Hearing Aids

Multimodal hearing aids (HAs) aim to deliver more intelligible audio in noisy environments by contextually sensing and processing data in the form of not only audio but also visual information (e.g. lip reading). Machine learning techniques can play a pivotal role for the contextually processing of multimodal data. However, since the computational power of HA devices is low, therefore this data must be processed either on the edge or cloud which, in turn, poses privacy concerns for sensitive user data. Existing literature proposes several techniques for data encryption but their computational complexity is a major bottleneck to meet strict latency requirements for development of future multi-modal hearing aids. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a novel real-time audio/visual data encryption scheme based on chaos-based encryption using the Tangent-Delay Ellipse Reflecting Cavity-Map System (TD-ERCS) map and Non-linear Chaotic (NCA) Algorithm. The results achieved against different security parameters, including Correlation Coefficient, Unified Averaged Changed Intensity (UACI), Key Sensitivity Analysis, Number of Changing Pixel Rate (NPCR), Mean-Square Error (MSE), Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Entropy test, and Chi-test, indicate that the newly proposed scheme is more lightweight due to its lower execution time as compared to existing schemes and more secure due to increased key-space against modern brute-force attacks.

A Novel Speech Intelligibility Enhancement Model based on CanonicalCorrelation and Deep Learning

Current deep learning (DL) based approaches to speech intelligibility enhancement in noisy environments are often trained to minimise the feature distance between noise-free speech and enhanced speech signals. Despite improving the speech quality, such approaches do not deliver required levels of speech intelligibility in everyday noisy environments . Intelligibility-oriented (I-O) loss functions have recently been developed to train DL approaches for robust speech enhancement. Here, we formulate, for the first time, a novel canonical correlation based I-O loss function to more effectively train DL algorithms. Specifically, we present a canonical-correlation based short-time objective intelligibility (CC-STOI) cost function to train a fully convolutional neural network (FCN) model. We carry out comparative simulation experiments to show that our CC-STOI based speech enhancement framework outperforms state-of-the-art DL models trained with conventional distance-based and STOI-based loss functions, using objective and subjective evaluation measures for case of both unseen speakers and noises. Ongoing future work is evaluating the proposed approach for design of robust hearing-assistive technology.

A flexible meander line monopole antenna (MMA) is presented in this paper. The antenna can be worn for on-and off-body applications. The overall dimension of the MMA is 37 mm x 50 mm x2.37 mm3. The MMA was manufactured and measured, and the results matched with simulation results. The MMA design shows a bandwidth of up to 1282.4 (450.5) MHz and provides gains of 3.03 (4.85) dBi in the lower and upper operating bands, respectively, showing omnidirectional radiation patterns in free space. While worn on the chest or arm, bandwidths as high as 688.9 (500.9) MHz and 1261.7 (524.2) MHz, and the gains of 3.80 (4.67) dBi and 3.00 (4.55) dBi were observed. The experimental measurements of the read range confirmed the results of the coverage range of up to 11 meters.

Low-profile Button Sensor Antenna Design for Wireless Medical Body Area Networks

A button sensor antenna for wireless medical body area networks (WMBAN) is presented, which works through the IEEE 802.11b/g/n standard. Due to strong interaction between the sensor antenna and the body, an innovative robust system is designed with a small footprint that can serve on- and off-body healthcare applications. The measured and simulated results are in good agreement. The design offers a wide range of omnidirectional radiation patterns in free space, with a reflection coefficient (S11) of -29.30 (-30.97) dB in the lower (upper) bands. S11 reaches up to -23.07 (-27.07) dB and -30.76 (-31.12) dB, respectively, on the human body chest and arm. The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) values are below the regulatory limitations for both 1-gram (1.6 W/Kg) and 10-gram tissues (2.0 W/Kg). A Novel Temporal Attentive-Pooling based Convolutional Recurrent Architecture for Acoustic Signal Enhancement

In acoustic signal processing, the target signals usually carry semantic information, which is encoded in a hierarchal structure of short and long-term contexts. However, the background noise distorts these structures in a nonuniform way. The existing deep acoustic signal enhancement (ASE) architectures ignore this kind of local and global effect. To address this problem, we propose to integrate a novel temporal attentive-pooling (TAP) mechanism into a conventional convolutional recurrent neural network, termed as TAP-CRNN. The proposed approach considers both global and local attention for ASE tasks. Specifically, we first utilize a convolutional layer to extract local information of the acoustic signals and then a recurrent neural network (RNN) architecture is used to characterize temporal contextual information. Second, we exploit a novelattention mechanism to contextually process salient regions of the noisy signals. The proposed ASE system is evaluated using a benchmark infant cry dataset and compared with several well-known methods. It is shown that the TAPCRNN can more effectively reduce noise components from infant cry signals in unseen background noises at challenging signal-to-noise levels.

FairDrop: Biased Edge Dropout for Enhancing Fairness in Graph Representation Learning

Graph representation learning has become a ubiquitous component in many scenarios, ranging from social network analysis to energy forecasting in smart grids. In several applications, ensuring the fairness of the node (or graph) representations with respect to some protected attributes is crucial for their correct deployment. Yet, fairness in graph deep learning remains under-explored, with few solutions available. In particular, the tendency of similar nodes to cluster on several real-world graphs (i.e., homophily) can dramatically worsen the fairness of these procedures. In this paper, we propose a novel biased edge dropout algorithm (FairDrop) to counter-act homophily and improve fairness in graph representation learning. FairDrop can be plugged in easily on many existing algorithms, is efficient, adaptable, and can be combined with other fairness-inducing solutions. After describing the general algorithm, we demonstrate its application on two benchmark tasks, specifically, as a random walk model for producing node embeddings, and to a graph convolutional network for link prediction. We prove that the proposed algorithm can successfully improve the fairness of all models up to a small or negligible drop in accuracy, and compares favourably with existing state-of-the-art solutions. In an ablation study, we demonstrate that our algorithm can flexibly interpolate between biasing towards fairness and an unbiased edge dropout. Furthermore, to better evaluate the gains, we propose a new dyadic group definition to measure the bias of a link prediction task when paired with group-based fairness metrics. In particular, we extend the metric used to measure the bias in the node embeddings to take into account the graph structure.

An Enhanced Binary Particle-Swarm Optimization (E-BPSO) Algorithm for Service Placement in Hybrid Cloud Platforms

Nowadays, hybrid cloud platforms stand as an attractive solution for organizations intending to implement combined private and public cloud applications, in order to meet their profitability requirements. However, this can only be achieved through the utilization of available resources while speeding up execution processes. Accordingly, deploying new applications entails dedicating some of these processes to a private cloud solution, while allocating others to the public cloud. In this context, the present work is set to help minimize relevant costs and deliver effective choices for an optimal service placement solution within minimal execution time. Several evolutionary algorithms have been applied to solve the service placement problem and are used when dealing with complex solution spaces to provide an optimal placement and often produce a short execution time. The standard BPSO algorithm is found to display a significant disadvantage, namely, of easily trapping into local optima, in addition to demonstrating a noticeable lack of robustness in dealing with service placement problems. Hence, to overcome critical shortcomings associated with the standard BPSO, an Enhanced Binary Particle Swarm Optimization (E-BPSO) algorithm is proposed, consisting of a modification of the particle position updating equation, initially inspired from the continuous PSO. Our proposed E-BPSO algorithm is shown to outperform state-of-the-art approaches in terms of both cost and execution time, using a real benchmark.

Towards Robust Real-time Audio-Visual Speech Enhancement

The human brain contextually exploits heterogeneous sensory information to efficiently perform cognitive tasks including vision and hearing. For example, during the cocktail party situation, the human auditory cortex contextually integrates audio-visual (AV) cues in order to better perceive speech. Recent studies have shown that AV speech enhancement (SE) models can significantly improve speech quality and intelligibility in very low signal to noise ratio (SNR) environments as compared to audio-only SE models. However, despite significant research in the area of AV SE, development of real-time processing models with low latency remains a formidable technical challenge. In this paper, we present a novel framework for low latency speaker-independent AV SE that can generalise on a range of visual and acoustic noises. In particular, a generative adversarial networks (GAN) is proposed to address the practical issue of visual imperfections in AV SE. In addition, we propose a deep neural network based real-time AV SE model that takes into account the cleaned visual speech output from GAN to deliver more robust SE. The proposed framework is evaluated on synthetic and real noisy AV corpora using objective speech quality and intelligibility metrics and subjective listing tests. Comparative simulation results show that our real time AV SE framework outperforms state-of-the-art SE approaches, including recent DNN based SE models.

In an attempt to address these challenges, researchers have explored intelligibility-oriented (I-O) loss functions and integration of audio-visual (AV) information for more robust speech enhancement (SE). Attributes Guided Feature Learning for Vehicle Re-identification

Vehicle Re-ID has recently attracted enthusiastic attention due to its potential applications in smart city and urban surveillance. However, it suffers from large intra-class variation caused by view variations and illumination changes, and inter-class similarity especially for different identities with the similar appearance. To handle these issues, in this paper, we propose a novel deep network architecture, which guided by meaningful attributes including camera views, vehicle types and colors for vehicle Re-ID. In particular, our network is end-to-end trained and contains three subnetworks of deep features embedded by the corresponding attributes (i.e., camera view, vehicle type and vehicle color). Moreover, to overcome the shortcomings of limited vehicle images of different views, we design a view-specified generative adversarial network to generate the multi-view vehicle images. For network training, we annotate the view labels on the VeRi-776 dataset. Note that one can directly adopt the pre-trained view (as well as type and color) subnetwork on the other datasets with only ID information, which demonstrates the generalization of our model. Extensive experiments on the benchmark datasets VeRi-776 and VehicleID suggest that the proposed approach achieves the promising performance and yields to a new state-of-the-art for vehicle Re-ID.

Cloud based Scalable Object Recognition from Video Streams using Orientation Fusion and Convolutional Neural Networks

Object recognition from live video streams comes with numerous challenges such as the variation in illumination conditions and poses. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely used to perform intelligent visual object recognition. Yet, CNNs still suffer from severe accuracy degradation, particularly on illumination-variant datasets. To address this problem, we propose a new CNN method based on orientation fusion for visual object recognition. The proposed cloud-based video analytics system pioneers the use of bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition to split a video frame into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). We further propose these IMFs to endure Reisz transform to produce monogenic object components, which are in turn used for the training of CNNs. Past works have demonstrated how the object orientation component may be used to pursue accuracy levels as high as 93\%. Herein we demonstrate how a feature-fusion strategy of the orientation components leads to further improving visual recognition accuracy to 97\%. We also assess the scalability of our method, looking at both the number and the size of the video streams under scrutiny. We carry out extensive experimentation on the publicly available Yale dataset, including also a self generated video datasets, finding significant improvements (both in accuracy and scale), in comparison to AlexNet, LeNet and SE-ResNeXt, which are the three most commonly used deep learning models for visual object recognition and classification.

Learning Polar Encodings for Arbitrary-Oriented Ship Detection in SAR Images

Common horizontal bounding box (HBB)-based methods are not capable of accurately locating slender ship targets with arbitrary orientations in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Therefore, in recent years, methods based on oriented bounding box (OBB) have gradually received attention from researchers. However, most of the recently proposed deep learning-based methods for OBB detection encounter the boundary discontinuity problem in angle or key point regression. In order to alleviate this problem, researchers propose to introduce some manually set parameters or extra network branches for distinguishing the boundary cases, which make training more diffcult and lead to performance degradation. In this paper, in order to solve the boundary discontinuity problem in OBB regression, we propose to detect SAR ships by learning polar encodings. The encoding scheme uses a group of vectors pointing from the center of the ship target to the boundary points to represent an OBB. The boundary discontinuity problem is avoided by training and inference directly according to the polar encodings. In addition, we propose an Intersect over Union (IOU) -weighted regression loss, which further guides the training of polar encodings through the IOU metric and improves the detection performance. Experiments on the Rotating SAR Ship Detection Dataset (RSSDD) show that the proposed method can achieve better detection performance over other comparison algorithms and other OBB encoding schemes, demonstrating the effectiveness of our method.

A novel multimodal fusion network based on a joint coding model for lane line segmentation

There has recently been growing interest in utilizing multimodal sensors to achieve robust lane line segmentation. In this paper, we introduce a novel multimodal fusion architecture from an information theory perspective, and demonstrate its practical utility using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) camera fusion networks. In particular, we develop, for the first time, a multimodal fusion network as a joint coding model, where each single node, layer, and pipeline is represented as a channel. The forward propagation is thus equal to the information transmission in the channels. Then, we can qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the effect of different fusion approaches. We argue the optimal fusion architecture is related to the essential capacity and its allocation based on the source and channel. To test this multimodal fusion hypothesis, we progressively determine a series of multimodal models based on the proposed fusion methods and evaluate them on the KITTI and the A2D2 datasets. Our optimal fusion network achieves 85%+ lane line accuracy and 98.7%+ overall. The performance gap among the models will inform continuing future research into development of optimal fusion algorithms for the deep multimodal learning community.
