Polynomial Hilbert-Schmidt stability of the lamplighter group

We establish explicit polynomial bounds on the stability rate and radius of the lamplighter group. This provides the first example of an infinitely presented group with an explicit upper bound on the stability radius, answering a question of the first author, Levit and Vigdorovich. Our approach is based on new dynamical notions, including the analysis of approximately invariant measures. We establish an effective continuous tower decomposition procedure for approximately invariant measures with presence of periodic points. To achieve polynomial bounds we appeal to recent techniques from descriptive combinatorics and distributed LOCAL algorithms.

On $L^1$-approximation of groups

A longstanding open problem in the intersection of group theory and operator algebras is whether all groups are MF, that is, approximated by asymptotic representations with respect to the operator norm. More generally, for $1 \leq p \leq \infty$, it has been asked by Thom in his ICM address whether there exist groups which are not approximated with respect to the Schatten $p$-norm. The cases of $1 < p < \infty$ were addressed in previous works. We settle the case $p=1$, solving a question left open by Lubotzky and Oppenheim.

Non-uniform higher-rank lattices are character rigid

We establish character rigidity for all non-uniform higher-rank irreducible lattices in semisimple groups of characteristic other than 2. This implies stabilizer rigidity for probability measure preserving actions and rigidity of invariant random subgroups, confirming a conjecture of Stuck and Zimmer for non-uniform lattices in full generality.

Characters of diagonal products and Hilbert-Schmidt stability

We initiate a quantitative study of Hilbert-Schmidt stability for infinitely presented groups through the novel notion of stability radius growth. We exhibit an uncountable family of Hilbert-Schmidt stable amenable groups with arbitrarily large such growth. In particular, this answers a question of Lubotzky. Our approach is based on the character-theoretic stability criterion of Hadwin and Shulman. We classify the characters of alternating and elementary enrichments as well as diagonal products, including the classical family of B.H. Neumann groups.

Hyperlinearity, stability and asymptotic spectral gap of higher rank lattices

We prove that if the group $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb Z[1/p])$ is flexibly Hilbert--Schmidt stable for some prime $p$, then it admits a non-hyperlinear finite central extension. Consequently, a positive answer to the following question would yield an explicit example of a non-hyperlinear group: If two representations of the modular group $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ almost agree on an Iwahori subgroup $B$, must they be close to representations that agree on $B$? More generally, we investigate spectral gap properties for asymptotic representations of higher rank lattices and groups with property (T:FD). In this setting, we prove that character rigidity is equivalent to a weak form of stability.

Flexible Hilbert-Schmidt stability versus hyperlinearity for property (T) groups

We prove a statement concerning hyperlinearity for central extensions of property (T) groups in the presence of flexible HS-stability, and more generally, weak ucp-stability. Notably, this result is applied to show that if $\text{Sp}_{2g} (\mathbb Z)$ is flexibly HS-stable, then there exists a non-hyperlinear group. Further, the same phenomenon is shown to hold generically for random groups sampled in Gromov's density model, as well as all infinitely presented property (T) groups. This gives new directions for the possible existence of a non-hyperlinear group. Our results yield Hilbert-Schmidt analogues for Bowen and Burton's work relating flexible P-stability of $\text{PSL}_n(\mathbb Z)$ and the existence of non-sofic groups.

On uniform Hilbert Schmidt stability of groups

A group $Γ$ is said to be uniformly HS stable if any map $φ: Γ\to U(n)$ that is almost a unitary representation (w.r.t. the Hilbert Schmidt norm) is close to a genuine unitary representation of the same dimension. We present a complete classification of uniformly HS stable groups among finitely generated residually finite ones. Necessity of the residual finiteness assumption is discussed. A similar result is shown to hold assuming only amenability.
