Designing emissive conjugated polymers with small optical gaps: a step towards organic polymeric infrared lasers

We show that chemical modification of the trans-polyacetylene structure that involves substitution of the backbone hydrogen atoms with conjugated side groups, leads to reduction of the backbone bond alternation as well as screening of the effective Coulomb interaction. Consequently the optical gap of the substituted material is smaller than the parent polyene with the same backbone length, and the excited state ordering is conducive to efficient photoluminescence. The design of organic polymeric infrared lasers, in the ideal long chain limit, thereby becomes possible.

Ab initio Hartree-Fock computation of electronic static structure factor of crystalline insulators: benchmark results on LiF

In this paper we present a fully ab initio Hartree-Fock approach aimed at calculating the static structure factor of crystalline insulators at arbitrary values of momentum transfer. In particular, we outline the computation of the incoherent scattering function, the component of the structure factor which governs the incoherent x-ray scattering from solids. The presented theory is applied to crystalline LiF to obtain benchmark Hartree-Fock values for its incoherent scattering function. Benchmark theoretical values such as this, can be combined with the experimentally measured static structure factor, to understand the influence of electron correlation effects on cohesive properties of solids.

Wavefunction-based correlated ab initio calculations on crystalline solids

We present a wavefunction-based approach to correlated ab initio calculations on crystalline insulators of infinite extent. It uses the representation of the occupied and the unoccupied (virtual) single-particle states of the infinite solid in terms of Wannier functions. Electron correlation effects are evaluated by considering virtual excitations from a small region in and around the reference cell, keeping the electrons of the rest of the infinite crystal frozen at the Hartree-Fock level. The method is applied to study the ground state properties of the LiH crystal, and is shown to yield rapidly convergent results.

A Wannier-function-based ab initio Hartree-Fock study of polyethylene

In the present letter, we report the extension of our Wannier-function-based ab initio Hartree-Fock approach---meant originally for three-dimensional crystalline insulators---to deal with quasi-one-dimensional periodic systems such as polymers. The system studied is all-transoid polyethylene, and results on optimized lattice parameters, cohesive energy and the band structure utilizing 6-31G** basis sets are presented. Our results are also shown to be in excellent agreement with those obtained with traditional Bloch-orbital-based approaches.

A Wannier function based ab initio Hartree-Fock approach extended to polymers: applications to the LiH chain and trans-polyacetylene

A recently proposed ab initio Hartree-Fock approach aimed at directly obtaining the Wannier functions of a crystalline insulator is applied to polymers. The systems considered are the LiH chain and trans-polyacetylene. In addition to being the first application of our approach to one-dimensional systems, this work also demonstrates its applicability to covalent systems. Both minimal as well as extended basis sets were employed in the present study and excellent agreement was obtained with the Bloch orbital based approaches. Cohesive energies, optimized lattice parameters and the band structure are presented. Localization characteristics of the Wannier functions are also discussed.

A Hartree-Fock ab initio band-structure calculation employing Wannier-type orbitals

An ab initio Wannier-function-based approach to electronic ground-state calculations for crystalline solids is outlined. In the framework of the linear combination of atomic orbitals method the infinite character of the solid is rigorously taken into account. The Hartree-Fock ground-state energy, cohesive energy, lattice constant and bulk modulus are calculated in a fully ab initio manner as it is demonstrated for sodium chloride, NaCl, using basis sets close to the Hartree-Fock limit. It is demonstrated that the Hartree-Fock band-structure can easily be recovered with the current approach and agrees with the one obtained from a more conventional Bloch-orbital-based calculation. It is argued that the advantage of the present approach lies in its capability to include electron correlation effects for crystalline insulators by means of well-established quantum chemical procedures.

Towards a quantum-chemical description of crystalline insulators: A Wannier-function-based Hartree-Fock study of Li2O and Na2O

A recently proposed approach for performing electronic-structure calculations on crystalline insulators in terms of localized orthogonal orbitals is applied to the oxides of lithium and sodium, Li2O and Na2O. Cohesive energies, lattice constants and bulk moduli of the aforementioned systems are determined at the Hartree-Fock level, and the corresponding values are shown to be in excellent agreement with the values obtained by a traditional Bloch-orbital-based Hartree-Fock approach. The present Wannier-function-based approach is expected to be advantageous in the treatment of electron-correlation effects in an infinite solid by conventional quantum-chemical methods.

Obtaining Wannier Functions of a Crystalline Insulator within a Hartree-Fock approach: Applications to LiF and LiCl

An ab initio Hartree-Fock approach aimed at directly obtaining the localized orthogonal orbitals (Wannier functions) of a crystalline insulator is described in detail. The method is used to perform all-electron calculations on the ground states of crystalline lithium fluoride and lithium chloride, without the use of any pseudo or model potentials. Quantities such as total energy, x-ray structure factors and Compton profiles obtained using the localized Hartree-Fock orbitals are shown to be in excellent agreement with the corresponding quantities calculated using the conventional Bloch-orbital based Hartree-Fock approach. Localization characteristics of these orbitals are also discussed in detail.

Bose-Einstein Condensation in a Trap: the Case of a Dense Condensate

We consider the Bose-Einstein condensation of atoms in a trap where the density of particles is so high that the low density approach of Gross and Pitaevskii will not be applicable. For this purpose we use the slave boson representation which is valid for hard-core bosons at any density. This description leads to the same results as the Gross-Pitaevskii approach in the low density limit, but for higher densities, it predicts the depletion of the order parameter field condensate in the regions where the density of the atomic cloud is high.
