Low-Complexity Channel Estimation for Reconfigurable Fluid Antenna System

Electromagnetically reconfigurable fluid antenna system (ER-FAS) provides additional electromagnetic (EM)-domain degrees of freedom by enabling dynamic control of per-element radiation patterns, thereby improving power efficiency in wireless communications. The effective exploitation of these capabilities, however, critically depends on accurate channel estimation, which has received limited attention in prior studies. This paper presents a low-complexity channel parameter estimation framework for downlink wideband systems that leverages available channel sparsity. A synthesis-based reconfigurability model is considered, where each antenna generates desired beampatterns using a finite set of EM basis functions. Based on this model, a joint optimization of digital and EM precoders is formulated with the objective of minimizing the Cram\'er-Rao lower bound of the channel parameters. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid beamforming and estimation approach enables accurate recovery of channel parameters while maintaining low computational complexity.

Near-Field Localization via Reconfigurable Antennas

Reconfigurable antennas (RAs) utilize the electromagnetic (EM) domain to provide dynamic control over antenna radiation patterns, which offers an effective way to enhance power efficiency in wireless links. Unlike conventional arrays with fixed element patterns, RAs enable on-demand beam-pattern synthesis by directly controlling each antenna's EM characteristics. While existing research on RAs has primarily focused on improving spectral efficiency, this paper explores their application for downlink localization. Moreover, the majority of existing works focus on far-field scenarios with little attention on near-field (NF). Motivated by these gaps, we consider a synthesis model in which each antenna generates desired beampatterns from a finite set of EM basis functions. We then formulate a joint optimization problem for the baseband (BB) and EM precoders with the objective of minimizing the user equipment (UE) position error bound (PEB) in NF conditions. Our analytical derivations and extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid precoder design for RAs significantly improves UE positioning accuracy compared to traditional non-reconfigurable arrays.

Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces for Multicarrier Cognitive Radio ISAC

The fusion of cognitive radio (CR) and integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), enabled by stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIMs), offers a promising path for multi-functional programmable front ends in 6G and beyond. In this paper we propose a novel CR-ISAC framework that leverages an SIM integrated with the secondary base station (SB) to learn and realize optimal beampatterns that simultaneously (i) minimize the Bayesian Cram\'er-Rao bound (BCRB) for localizing a secondary user equipment (SU) and (ii) limit averaged interference at primary user equipments (PUs) so that spectral efficiency loss is constrained, with the target of at most a few percent degradation. We propose an efficient alternating optimization-based algorithm to obtain the optimal end-to-end transmission response of the SIM for all orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) subcarriers. Drawing an analogy between the layered SIM architecture and deep neural networks, we define a beampattern- matching loss, derive analytical gradients for backpropagation, and implement a learning-based optimization of the SIM coefficients using a mini-batch Adam optimizer. A complexity analysis is provided, and extensive numerical experiments are performed to evaluate the proposed CR-ISAC framework. The results show that the proposed SIM coefficient optimization methods attain near-optimal performance in terms of both the SU BCRB localization metric and the PUs average spectral efficiency when the SIM has a sufficient number of layers, and they substantially outperform traditional single-layer reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) designs.

Hybrid Codebook Design for Localization Using Electromagnetically Reconfigurable Fluid Antenna System

Electromagnetically reconfigurable fluid antenna systems (ER-FAS) introduce additional degrees of freedom in the electromagnetic (EM) domain by dynamically steering per-antenna radiation patterns, thereby enhancing power efficiency in wireless links. Unlike prior works on spatially reconfigurable FAS, which adjust element positions, ER-FAS provides direct control over each element's EM characteristics to realize on-demand beam-pattern shaping. While existing studies have exploited ER-FAS to boost spectral efficiency, this paper explores its application for downlink localization. We consider a multiple-input single-output (MISO) system in which a multi-antenna ER-FAS at the base station serves a single-antenna user equipment (UE). We consider two reconfigurability paradigms: (i) a synthesis model where each antenna generates desired beampatterns from a finite set of EM basis functions, and (ii) a finite-state selection model in which each antenna selects a pattern from a predefined set of patterns. For both paradigms, we formulate the joint baseband (BB) and EM precoder design to minimize the UE position error bound. In the synthesis case we derive low-dimensional closed-form expressions for both the BB and EM precoders. For the finite-state model we obtain closed-form BB structures and propose a low-complexity block-coordinate-descent algorithm for EM pattern selection. Analytical bounds and extensive simulations show that the proposed hybrid designs for ER-FAS substantially improve UE positioning accuracy over traditional non-reconfigurable arrays.

Near-Field RIS-Assisted Localization Under Mutual Coupling

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have the potential to significantly enhance the performance of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems, particularly in line-of-sight (LoS) blockage scenarios. However, as larger RISs are integrated into ISAC systems, mutual coupling (MC) effects between RIS elements become more pronounced, leading to a substantial degradation in performance, especially for localization applications. In this paper, we first conduct a misspecified and standard Cram\'er-Rao bound analysis to quantify the impact of MC on localization performance, demonstrating severe degradations in accuracy, especially when MC is ignored. Building on this, we propose a novel joint user equipment localization and RIS MC parameter estimation (JLMC) method in near-field wireless systems. Our two-stage MC-aware approach outperforms classical methods that neglect MC, significantly improving localization accuracy and overall system performance. Simulation results validate the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed method in realistic scenarios.

Robust 3D Multi-Source Localization with a Movable Antenna Array via Sparse Signal Processing

Accurately localizing multiple sources is a critical task with various applications in wireless communications, such as emergency services, including natural post-disaster search and rescue operations. However, scenarios where the receiver is moving have not been sufficiently addressed in recent studies. This paper tackles the angle of arrival (AOA) 3D-localization problem for multiple sparse signal sources with a moving receiver, which has a limited number of antennas that may be outnumbered by the sources. First, an energy detector algorithm is proposed to leverage signal sparsity for eliminating noisy samples. Subsequently, an iterative algorithm is developed to refine and estimate the AOAs accurately, initialized with previously estimated source locations and coarse elevation and azimuth AOAs obtained via the two-dimensional multiple signal classification (2D-MUSIC) method. To this end, we introduce a sparse recovery algorithm to exploit signal sparsity, followed by a phase smoothing algorithm to refine the estimates. The K-SVD algorithm is then applied to the smoothed output to accurately determine the elevation and azimuth AOAs of the sources. For localization, a new multi-source 3D-localization algorithm is proposed to estimate source positions using the refined AOA estimates over a sequence of time windows. Extensive simulations are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.
