Non-constancy and multiplicity of half-harmonic maps from intervals into the circle

We study one-dimensional half-harmonic maps from the real line into the circle with prescribed exterior data. We show that, for every positive integer $k$, if two disjoint intervals are sufficiently close, there exist at least $k$ distinct non-constant half-harmonic maps with constant exterior data. More generally, we establish a multiplicity result for boundary data with energy below the critical threshold $2\pi$ by introducing a local relative degree and proving corresponding degree-jump estimates. Working on a single interval and for boundary data arising as traces of finite Blaschke products, we investigate the existence and non-existence of energy minimizers in prescribed degree classes.

Bol's type inequality for singular metrics and its application to prescribing $Q$-curvature problems

In this article, we study higher-order Bol's inequality for radial normal solutions to a singular Liouville equation. By applying these inequalities along with compactness arguments, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of radial normal solutions to a singular $Q$-curvature problem. Moreover, under suitable assumptions on the $Q$-curvature, we obtain uniform bounds on the total $Q$-curvature.

Coupled 1D Chemical Kinetic-Transport and 2D Hydrodynamic Modeling Supports a modest 1-1.5x Supersolar Oxygen Abundance in Jupiter's Atmosphere

Understanding the deep atmospheric composition of Jupiter provides critical constraints on its formation and the chemical evolution of the solar nebula. In this study, we combine one-dimensional thermochemical kinetic-transport modeling with two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations to constrain Jupiter's deep oxygen abundance using carbon monoxide (CO) as a proxy tracer. Leveraging a comprehensive chemical network generated by Reaction Mechanism Generator (RMG), we assess the impact of updated reaction rates, including the often-neglected but thermochemically significant Hidaka reaction (CH3OH + H -> CH3 + H2O). Our 1D-2D coupled approach supports a modest supersolar oxygen enrichment of 1.0-1.5x the solar value. We also present a method for deriving Jupiter's eddy diffusion coefficient Kzz = 3e6 to 5e7 cm2/s) from 2D hydrodynamic simulations using the quasi steady-state approach. This method is applicable to exoplanet atmospheres, where Kzz remains highly uncertain despite its strong influence on atmospheric chemistry. Finally, our results imply a significantly elevated planetary carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio of ~2.9, highlighting the importance of clarifying the mechanisms behind the preferential accretion of carbon-rich material during Jupiter's formation. By integrating thermochemical and hydrodynamic processes, our study offers a more complete framework for constraining chemical and dynamical processes in (exo)planetary atmospheres.

The limiting case of the fractional Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality in dimension one

In this paper we study the fractional Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality (CKN) in one dimension when the parameter $\gamma$ converges (from the left) to its critical value $1/2$, obtaining Onofri's inequality in the unit disk as the limit. A difficulty that we encounter is the lack of an explicit expression for the extremal function at which the CKN inequality is attained, which we address by studying solutions of the weighted Liouville equation for the half-Laplacian in dimension one.

One-dimensional half-harmonic maps into the circle and their degree

Given a half-harmonic map $u\in \dot H^{\frac{1}{2},2}(\mathbb{R},\mathbb{S}^1)$ minimizing the fractional Dirichlet energy under Dirichlet boundary conditions in $\mathbb{R}\setminus I$, we show the existence of a second half-harmonic map, minimizing the fractional Dirichlet energy in a different homotopy class. This is based on the study of the degree of fractional Sobolev maps and a sharp estimate \`a la Brezis-Coron. We give examples showing that it is in general not possible to minimize in every homotopy class and show a contrast with the 2-dimensional case.

On the Hang-Yang conjecture for GJMS equations on $\mathbb S^n$

This work concerns a Liouville type result for positive, smooth solution $v$ to the following higher-order equation \[ {\mathbf P}^{2m}_n (v) = \frac{n-2m}2 Q_n^{2m} (\varepsilon v+v^{-\alpha} ) \] on $\mathbb S^n$ with $m \geq 2$, $3 \leq n < 2m $, $0<\alpha \leq (2m+n)/(2m-n)$, and $\varepsilon >0$. Here $ {\mathbf P}^{2m}_n$ is the GJMS operator of order $2m$ on $\mathbb S^n$ and $Q_n^{2m} =(2/(n-2m)) {\mathbf P}^{2m}_n (1)$ is constant. We show that if $\varepsilon >0$ is small and $0<\alpha \leq (2m+n)/(2m-n)$, then any positive, smooth solution $v$ to the above equation must be constant. The same result remains valid if $\varepsilon =0$ and $0<\alpha < (2m+n)/(2m-n)$. In the special case $n=3$, $m=2$, and $\alpha=7$, such Liouville type result was recently conjectured by F. Hang and P. Yang (Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN, 2020). As a by-product, we obtain the sharp (subcritical and critical) Sobolev inequalities \[ \Big( \int_{\mathbb S^n} v^{1-\alpha} d\mu_{\mathbb S^n} \Big)^{\frac {2}{\alpha -1}} \int_{\mathbb S^n} v {\mathbf P}^{2m}_n (v) d\mu_{\mathbb S^n} \geq \frac{\Gamma (n/2 + m)}{\Gamma (n/2 - m )} | \mathbb S^n|^\frac{\alpha + 1}{\alpha - 1} \] for the GJMS operator $ {\mathbf P}^{2m}_n$ on $\mathbb S^n$ under the conditions $n \geq 3$, $n=2m-1$, and $\alpha \in(0,1) \cup (1, 2n+1]$. A log-Sobolev type inequality, as the limiting case $\alpha=1$, is also presented.

Blow-up Analysis of Stationary Solutions to a Liouville-Type Equation in 3-D

In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of sequences of stationary weak solutions to the following Liouville-type equation $-\Delta u=e^u~~~{in }~~~\Omega$, where $\Omega$ is an open set of $R^3$. By improving the partial regularity estimates obtained by the first author for the above equation, we succeed in performing a blow-up analysis without Morrey-type assumptions on the solutions $u$ and on the nonlinearity $e^u.$

$Hubble~Space~Telescope$ Reveals Spectacular Light Echoes Associated with the Stripped-envelope Supernova 2016adj in the Iconic Dust Lane of Centaurus A

We present a multi-band sequence of $Hubble~Space~Telescope$ images documenting the emergence and evolution of multiple light echoes (LEs) linked to the stripped-envelope supernova (SN) 2016adj located in the central dust-lane of Centaurus A. Following point-spread function subtraction, we identify the earliest LE emission associated with a SN at only $+$34 days (d) past the epoch of $B$-band maximum. Additional HST images extending through $+$578 d cover the evolution of LE1 taking the form of a ring, while images taken on $+$1991 d reveals not only LE1, but also segments of a new inner LE ring (LE2) as well as two additional outer LE rings (LE3 & LE4). Adopting the single scattering formalism, the angular radii of the LEs suggest they originate from discrete dust sheets in the foreground of the SN. This information, combined with measurements of color and optical depth of the scattering surfaces, informs a scenario with multiple sheets of clumpy dust characterized by a varying degree of holes. In this case, the larger the LE's angular radii, the further in the foreground of the SN its dust sheet is located. However, an exception to this is LE2, which is formed by a dust sheet located in closer proximity to the SN than the dust sheets producing LE1, LE3, and LE4. The delayed appearance of LE2 can be attributed to its dust sheet having a significant hole along the line-of-sight between the SN and Earth.

Exploring Jupiter's Polar Deformation Lengths with High Resolution Shallow Water Modeling

The polar regions of Jupiter host a myriad of dynamically interesting phenomena including vortex configurations, folded-filamentary regions (FFRs), and chaotic flows. Juno observations have provided unprecedented views of the high latitudes, allowing for more constraints to be placed upon the troposphere and the overall atmospheric energy cycle. Moist convective events are believed to be the primary drivers of energetic storm behavior as observed on the planet. Here, we introduce a novel single layer shallow water model to investigate the effects of polar moist convective events at high resolution, the presence of dynamical instabilities over long timescales, and the emergence of FFRs at high latitudes. We use a flexible, highly parallelizable, finite-difference hydrodynamic code to explore the parameter space set up by previous models. We study the long term effects of deformation length (Ld), injected pulse size, and injected geopotential. We find that models with Ld beyond 1500 km (planetary Burger number, Bu$=4.4\times10^{-4}$) tend to homogenize their potential vorticity (PV) in the form of dominant stable polar cyclones, while lower Ld cases tend to show less stability with regards to Arnol'd-type flows. We also find that large turbulent forcing scales consistently lead to the formation of high latitude FFRs. Our findings support the idea that moist convection, occurring at high latitudes, may be sufficient to produce the dynamical variety seen at the Jovian poles. Additionally, derived values of localized horizontal shear and Ld may constrain FFR formation and evolution.

Partial regularity of the heat flow of half-harmonic maps and applications to harmonic maps with free boundary

We introduce a heat flow associated to half-harmonic maps, which have been introduced by Da Lio and Rivi\`ere. Those maps exhibit integrability by compensation in one space dimension and are related to harmonic maps with free boundary. We consider a new flow associated to these harmonic maps with free boundary which is actually motivated by a rather unusual heat flow for half-harmonic maps. We construct then weak solutions and prove their partial regularity in space and time via a Ginzburg-Landau approximation. The present paper complements the study initiated by Struwe and Chen-Lin.

Normal conformal metrics on $\mathbb{R}^4$ with $Q$-curvature having power-like growth

Answering a question by M. Struwe (Vietnam J. Math. 2020) related to the blow-up behaviour in the Nirenberg problem, we show that the prescribed $Q$-curvature equation $$\Delta^2 u=(1-|x|^p)e^{4u}\text{ in }\mathbb{R}^4,\quad \Lambda:=\int_{\mathbb{R}^4}(1-|x|^p)e^{4u}dx<\infty$$ has normal solutions (namely solutions which can be written in integral form, and hence satisfy $\Delta u(x) =O(|x|^{-2})$ as $|x|\to \infty$) if and only if $p\in (0,4)$ and $$\left(1+\frac{p}{4}\right)8\pi^2\le \Lambda <16\pi^2.$$ We also prove existence and non-existence results for the positive curvature case, namely for $\Delta^2 u=(1+|x|^p)e^{4u}$ in $\mathbb{R}^4$, and discuss some open questions.

Ice Giant Atmospheric Science

This white paper, written in support of NASA's 2023-2032 Planetary Decadal Survey, outlines 10 major questions that focus on the origin, evolution, and current processes that shape the atmospheres of Uranus and Neptune. Prioritizing these questions over the next decade will greatly improve our understanding of this unique class of planets, which have remained largely unexplored since the Voyager flybys. Studying the atmospheres of the Ice Giants will greatly inform our understanding of the origin and evolution of the solar system as a whole, in addition to the growing number of exoplanetary systems that contain Neptune-mass planets.

Singular Yamabe metrics by equivariant reduction

We construct singular solutions to the Yamabe equation using a reduction of the problem in an equivariant setting. This provides a non-trivial geometric example for which the analysis is simpler than in Mazzeo-Pacard program. Our construction provides also a non-trivial example of a weak solution to the Yamabe problem involving an equation with (smooth) coefficients.

Classification of stable solutions to a non-local Gelfand-Liouville equation

We study finite Morse index solutions to the non-local Gelfand-Liouville problem $$ (-\Delta)^su=e^u\quad\mathrm{in}\quad \mathbb{R}^n,$$ for every $s\in(0,1)$ and $n>2s$. Precisely, we prove non-existence of finite Morse index solutions whenever the singular solution $$u_{n,s}(x)=-2s\log|x|+\log \left(2^{2s}\frac{\Gamma(\frac{n}{2})\Gamma(1+s)}{\Gamma(\frac{n-2s}{2})}\right)$$ is unstable.

Removability of singularities and superharmonicity for some fractional Laplacian equations

We study some qualitative properties (including removable singularities and superharmonicity) of non-negative solutions to $$ (-\Delta)^\gamma u=fu^p\quad\text{in }\mathbb R^n\setminus\Sigma $$ which are singular at $\Sigma$. Here $\gamma \in (0, \frac{n}{2})$. Among other things, we first prove that if $\Sigma$ is a compact set in $\mathbb R^n$ with Assouad dimension $\bf d$ (not necessarily an integer), ${\bf d} \frac{n-\bf d}{n-{\bf d}-2\gamma},$$ then $u\in L^p_{loc}(\mathbb R^n)$ and $u$ is a distributional solution in $\mathbb R^n$. Then we prove that $ (-\Delta)^\sigma u >0$ for all $ \sigma \in (0, \gamma)$, if $\Sigma=\phi$.

Concentration phenomena to a higher order Liouville equation

We study blow-up and quantization phenomena for a sequence of solutions $(u_k)$ to the prescribed $Q$-curvature problem $$ (-\Delta)^nu_k= Q_ke^{2nu_k}\quad \text{in }\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^{2n},\quad \int_{\Omega}e^{2nu_k}dx\leq C,$$ under natural assumptions on $Q_k$. It is well-known that, up to a subsequence, either $(u_k)$ is bounded in a suitable norm, or there exists $\beta_k\to\infty$ such that $ u_k=\beta_k(\varphi+o(1))$ in $\Omega\setminus (S_1\cup S_\varphi)$ for some non-trivial non-positive $n$-harmonic function $\varphi$ and for a finite set $S_1$, where $S_\varphi$ is the zero set of $\varphi$. We prove quantization of the total curvature $\int_{\tilde\Omega}Q_ke^{2nu_k}dx$ on the region $\tilde\Omega\Subset(\Omega\setminus S_\varphi)$. We also consider a non-local case in dimension three.

Singular solutions for the constant $Q$-curvature problem

This paper is devoted to the construction of weak solutions to the singular constant $Q$-curvature problem. We build on several tools developed in the last years. This is the first construction of singular metrics on closed manifolds of sufficiently large dimension with constant (positive) $Q$-curvature.
