Masked Autoencoders Learn Perception-Relevant Representations from Resting State Neural Data

Clinical neuroprosthetics face a data bottleneck: labeled perception trials are scarce while hours of spontaneous neural activity are largely underutilized. Here, we test whether self-supervised learning can use these unlabeled datasets to improve perception decoding. We pretrained a masked autoencoder on 14.6 hours of spontaneous multiunit activity from an intracortical array in a blind participant's V1. The model captured interpretable brain structure without supervision: V1's spatial organization and perceptual state separation both emerged purely from its latent representations. To test these features, we used linear probing (logistic regression on the frozen latents) to measure performance on the data with stimulation. Perception decoding accuracy reached 84.1% on a general psychometric task. On the more difficult threshold-level task, accuracy reached 64.0%. This work shows that spontaneous cortical activity is not noise; it contains rich, task-relevant structure. Unsupervised pretraining on this data is a promising strategy to improve neural decoding.

Beyond Sight: Probing Alignment Between Image Models and Blind V1

Neural activity in the visual cortex of blind humans persists in the absence of visual stimuli. However, little is known about the preservation of visual representation capacity in these cortical regions, which could have significant implications for neural interfaces such as visual prostheses. In this work, we present a series of analyses on the shared representations between evoked neural activity in the primary visual cortex (V1) of a blind human with an intracortical visual prosthesis, and latent visual representations computed in deep neural networks (DNNs). In the absence of natural visual input, we examine two alternative forms of inducing neural activity: electrical stimulation and mental imagery. We first quantitatively demonstrate that latent DNN activations are aligned with neural activity measured in blind V1. On average, DNNs with higher ImageNet accuracy or higher sighted primate neural predictivity are more predictive of blind V1 activity. We further probe blind V1 alignment in ResNet-50 and propose a proof-of-concept approach towards interpretability of blind V1 neurons. The results of these studies suggest the presence of some form of natural visual processing in blind V1 during electrically evoked visual perception and present unique directions in mechanistically understanding and interfacing with blind V1.

Alternative measures of uncertainty in quantum metrology: Contradictions and limits

We examine a family of intrinsic performance measures in terms of probability distributions that generalize Hellinger distance and Fisher information. They are applied to quantum metrology to assess the uncertainty in the detection of minute changes of physical quantities. We show that different measures lead to contradictory conclusions, including the possibility of arbitrarily small uncertainty for fixed resources. These intrinsic performances are compared with the averaged error in the corresponding estimation problem after single-shot measurements.
