Moments of traces of random symplectic matrices and hyperelliptic $L$-functions

We study matrix integrals of the form $$\int_{\mathrm{USp(2n)}}\prod_{j=1}^k\mathrm{tr}(U^j)^{a_j}\mathrm d U,$$ where $a_1,\ldots,a_r$ are natural numbers and integration is with respect to the Haar probability measure. We obtain a compact formula (the number of terms depends only on $\sum a_j$ and not on $n,k$) for the above integral in the non-Gaussian range $\sum_{j=1}^kja_j\le 4n+1$. This extends results of Diaconis-Shahshahani and Hughes-Rudnick who obtained a formula for the integral valid in the (Gaussian) range $\sum_{j=1}^kja_j\le n$ and $\sum_{j=1}^kja_j\le 2n+1$ respectively. We derive our formula using the connection between random symplectic matrices and hyperelliptic $L$-functions over finite fields, given by an equidistribution result of Katz and Sarnak, and an evaluation of a certain multiple character sum over the function field $\mathbb F_q(x)$. We apply our formula to study the linear statistics of eigenvalues of random unitary symplectic matrices in a narrow bandwidth sampling regime.

Automorphism Groups of Finite Extensions of Fields and the Minimal Ramification Problem

We study the following question: given a global field $F$ and finite group $G$, what is the minimal $r$ such that there exists a finite extension $K/F$ with $\mathrm{Aut}(K/F)\cong G$ that is ramified over exactly $r$ places of $F$? We conjecture that the answer is $\le 1$ for any global field $F$ and finite group $G$. In the case when $F$ is a number field we show that the answer is always $\le 4[F:\mathbb Q]$. We show that assuming Schinzel's Hypothesis H the answer is always $\le 1$ if $F$ is a number field. We show unconditionally that the answer is always $\le 1$ if $F$ is a global function field. We also show that for a broader class of fields $F$ than previously known, every finite group $G$ can be realized as the automorphism group of a finite extension $K/F$ (without restriction on the ramification). An important new tool used in this work is a recent result of the author and C. Tsang, which says that for any finite group $G$ there exists a natural number $n$ and a subgroup $H\leqslant S_n$ of the symmetric group such that $N_{S_n}(H)/H\cong G$.

Normalizer Quotients of Symmetric Groups and Inner Holomorphs

We show that every finite group $T$ is isomorphic to a normalizer quotient $N_{S_n}(H)/H$ for some $n$ and a subgroup $H\leq S_n$. We show that this holds for all large enough $n\ge n_0(T)$ and also with $S_n$ replaced by $A_n$. The two main ingredients in the proof are a recent construction due to Cornulier and Sambale of a finite group $G$ with $\mathrm{Out}(G)\cong T$ (for any given finite group $T$) and the determination of the normalizer in $\mathrm{Sym(G)}$ of the inner holomorph $\mathrm{InHol}(G)\leq\mathrm{Sym}(G)$ for any centerless indecomposable finite group $G$, which may be of independent interest.

Maximal Ideals in Commutative Rings and the Axiom of Choice

It is well-known that within Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory (ZF), the Axiom of Choice (AC) implies the Maximal Ideal Theorem (MIT), namely that every nontrivial commutative ring has a maximal ideal. The converse implication MIT $\Rightarrow$ AC was first proved by Hodges, with subsequent proofs given by Banaschewski and Ern\'e. Here we give another derivation of MIT $\Rightarrow$ AC, aiming to make the exposition self-contained and accessible to non-experts with only introductory familiarity with commutative ring theory and naive set theory.

Galois groups of random polynomials over the rational function field

For a fixed prime power $q$ and natural number $d$ we consider a random polynomial $$f=x^n+a_{n-1}(t)x^{n-1}+\ldots+a_1(t)x+a_0(t)\in\mathbb F_q[t][x]$$ with $a_i$ drawn uniformly and independently at random from the set of all polynomials in $\mathbb F_q[t]$ of degree $\le d$. We show that with probability tending to 1 as $n\to\infty$ the Galois group $G_f$ of $f$ over $\mathbb F_q(t)$ is isomorphic to $S_{n-k}\times C$, where $C$ is cyclic, $k$ and $|C|$ are small quantities with a simple explicit dependence on $f$. As a corollary we deduce that $\mathbb P(G_f=S_n\,|\,f\mbox{ irreducible})\to 1$ as $n\to\infty$. Thus we are able to overcome the $S_n$ versus $A_n$ ambiguity in the most natural small box random polynomial model over $\mathbb F_q[t]$, which has not been achieved over $\mathbb Z$ so far.

Lower Bounds on the Least Common Multiple of a Polynomial Sequence and its Radical

Cilleruelo conjectured that for an irreducible polynomial $f \in \mathbb{Z}[X]$ of degree $d \geq 2$, denoting $$L_f(N)=\mathrm{lcm}(f(1),f(2),\ldots f(N))$$ one has $$\log L_f(n)\sim(d-1)N\log N.$$ He proved it in the case $d=2$ but it remains open for every polynomial with $d>2$. While the tight upper bound $\log L_f(n)\lesssim (d-1)N\log N$ is known, the best known general lower bound due to Sah is $\log L_f(n)\gtrsim N\log N.$ We give an improved lower bound for a special class of irreducible polynomials, which includes the decomposable irreducible polynomials $f=g\circ h,\,g,h\in\mathbb Z[x],\mathrm{deg}\, g,\mathrm{deg}\, h\ge 2$, for which we show $$\log L_f(n)\gtrsim \frac{d-1}{d-\mathrm{deg}\, g}N\log N.$$ We also improve Sah's lower bound $\log\ell_f(N)\gtrsim \frac 2dN\log N$ for the radical $\ell_f(N)=\mathrm{rad}(L_f(N))$ for all $f$ with $d\ge 3$ and give a further improvement for polynomials $f$ with a small Galois group and satisfying an additional technical condition, as well as for decomposable polynomials.

Probabilistic Galois Theory in Function Fields

We study the irreducibility and Galois group of random polynomials over function fields. We prove that a random polynomial $f=y^n+\sum_{i=0}^{n-1}a_i(x)y^i\in\mathbb F_q[x][y]$ with i.i.d coefficients $a_i$ taking values in the set $\{a(x)\in\mathbb{F}_q[x]: \mathrm{deg}\, a\leq d\}$ with uniform probability, is irreducible with probability tending to $1-\frac{1}{q^d}$ as $n\to\infty$, where $d$ and $q$ are fixed. We also prove that with the same probability, the Galois group of this random polynomial contains the alternating group $A_n$. Moreover, we prove that if we assume a version of the polynomial Chowla conjecture over $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$, then the Galois group of this polynomial is actually equal to the symmetric group $S_n$ with probability tending to $1-\frac{1}{q^d}$. We also study the other possible Galois groups occurring with positive limit probability. Finally, we study the same problems with $n$ fixed and $d\to\infty$.

The Least Common Multiple of Polynomial Values over Function Fields

Cilleruelo conjectured that for an irreducible polynomial $f \in \mathbb{Z}[X]$ of degree $d \geq 2$ one has $$\log\left[\mathrm{lcm}(f(1),f(2),\ldots f(N))\right]\sim(d-1)N\log N$$ as $N \to \infty$. He proved it in the case $d=2$ but it remains open for every polynomial with $d>2$. We investigate the function field analogue of the problem by considering polynomials over the ring $\mathbb F_q[T]$. We state an analog of Cilleruelo's conjecture in this setting: denoting by $$L_f(n) := \mathrm{lcm} \left(f\left(Q\right)\ : \ Q \in \mathbb F_q[T]\mbox{ monic},\, \mathrm{deg}\,Q = n\right)$$ we conjecture that \begin{equation}\label{eq:conjffabs}\mathrm{deg}\, L_f(n) \sim c_f \left(d-1\right) nq^n,\ n \to \infty\end{equation} ($c_f$ is an explicit constant dependent only on $f$, typically $c_f=1$). We give both upper and lower bounds for $L_f(n)$ and show that the conjectured asymptotic holds for a class of ``special" polynomials, initially considered by Leumi in this context, which includes all quadratic polynomials and many other examples as well. We fully classify these special polynomials. We also show that $\mathrm{deg}\, L_f(n) \sim \mathrm{deg}\,\mathrm{rad}\left(L_f(n)\right)$ (in other words the corresponding LCM is close to being squarefree), which is not known over $\mathbb Z$.

Galois groups of random additive polynomials

We study the distribution of the Galois group of a random $q$-additive polynomial over a rational function field: For $q$ a power of a prime $p$, let $f=X^{q^n}+a_{n-1}X^{q^{n-1}}+\ldots+a_1X^q+a_0X$ be a random polynomial chosen uniformly from the set of $q$-additive polynomials of degree $n$ and height $d$, that is, the coefficients are independent uniform polynomials of degree ${\rm deg}\, a_i\leq d$. The Galois group $G_f$ is a random subgroup of ${\rm GL}_n(q)$. Our main result shows that $G_f$ is almost surely large as $d,q$ are fixed and $n\to \infty$. For example, we give necessary and sufficient conditions so that ${\rm SL}_n(q)\leq G_f$ asymptotically almost surely. Our proof uses the classification of maximal subgroups of ${\rm GL}_n(q)$. We also consider the limits: $q,n$ fixed, $d\to \infty$ and $d,n$ fixed, $q\to \infty$, which are more elementary.

Abhyankar's Affine Arithmetic Conjecture for the Symmetric and Alternating Groups

We prove that for any prime $p>2$, $q=p^\nu$ a power of $p$, $n\ge p$ and $G=S_n$ or $G=A_n$ (symmetric or alternating group) there exists a Galois extension $K/\mathbb F_q(T)$ ramified only over $\infty$ with $\mathrm{Gal}(K/\mathbb F_q(T))=G$. This confirms a conjecture of Abhyankar for the case of symmetric and alternating groups over finite fields of odd characteristic.

Local Statistics for Zeros of Artin-Schreier L-functions

We study the local statistics of zeros of $L$-functions attached to Artin-Scheier curves over finite fields. We consider three families of Artin-Schreier $L$-functions: the ordinary, polynomial (the $p$-rank 0 stratum) and odd-polynomial families. We compute the 1-level zero-density of the first and third families and the 2-level density of the second family for test functions with Fourier transform supported in a suitable interval. In each case we obtain agreement with a unitary or symplectic random matrix model.

The minimal ramification problem for rational function fields over finite fields

We study the minimal number of ramified primes in Galois extensions of rational function fields over finite fields with prescribed finite Galois group. In particular, we obtain a general conjecture in analogy with the well studied case of number fields, which we establish for abelian, symmetric and alternating groups in many cases.

Explicit Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem in Function Fields

We prove a quantitative version of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem for function fields: If $f(T_1,\ldots, T_n,X)$ is an irreducible polynomial over the field of rational functions over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of characteristic $p$, then the proportion of $n$-tuples $(t_1,\ldots, t_n)$ of monic polynomials of degree $d$ for which $f(t_1,\ldots, t_n,X)$ is reducible out of all $n$-tuples of degree $d$ monic polynomials is $O(dq^{-d/2})$.

Factorization Statistics of Restricted Polynomial Specializations over Large Finite Fields

For a polynomial $F(t,A_1,\ldots,A_n)\in\mathbf{F}_p[t,A_1,\ldots,A_n]$ ($p$ being a prime number) we study the factorization statistics of its specializations $$F(t,a_1,\ldots,a_n)\in\mathbf{F}_p[t]$$ with $(a_1,\ldots,a_n)\in S$, where $S\subset\mathbf{F}_p^n$ is a subset, in the limit $p\to\infty$ and $\mathrm{deg} F$ fixed. We show that for a sufficiently large and regular subset $S\subset\mathbf{F}_p^n$, e.g. a product of $n$ intervals of length $H_1,\ldots,H_n$ with $\prod_{i=1}^nH_n>p^{n-1/2+\epsilon}$, the factorization statistics is the same as for unrestricted specializations (i.e. $S=\mathbf{F}_p^n$) up to a small error. This is a generalization of the well-known P\'olya-Vinogradov estimate of the number of quadratic residues modulo $p$ in an interval.

Monodromy of Hyperplane Sections of Curves and Decomposition Statistics over Finite Fields

For a projective curve $C\subset\mathbf{P}^n$ defined over $\mathbf{F}_q$ we study the statistics of the $\mathbf{F}_q$-structure of a section of $C$ by a random hyperplane defined over $\mathbf{F}_q$ in the $q\to\infty$ limit. We obtain a very general equidistribution result for this problem. We deduce many old and new results about decomposition statistics over finite fields in this limit. Our main tool will be the calculation of the monodromy of transversal hyperplane sections of a projective curve.

On square-free values of large polynomials over the rational function field

We investigate the density of square-free values of polynomials with large coefficients over the rational function field $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$. Some interesting questions answered as special cases of our results include the density of square-free polynomials in short intervals, and an asymptotic for the number of representations of a large polynomial $N$ as a sum of a small $k$-th power and a square-free polynomial.

On the Bateman-Horn conjecture for polynomials over large finite fields

We prove an analogue of the classical Bateman-Horn conjecture on prime values of polynomials for the ring of polynomials over a large finite field. Namely, given non-associate, irreducible, separable and monic (in the variable $x$) polynomials $F_1,\ldots,F_m\in\mathbf{F}_q[t][x]$, with $q$ odd, we show that the number of $f\in\mathbf{F}_q[t]$ of degree $n\ge\max(3,\mathrm{deg}_t F_1,\ldots,\mathrm{deg}_t F_m)$ such that all $F_i(t,f)\in\mathbf{F}_q[t],1\le i\le m$ are irreducible is $$\left(\prod_{i=1}^m\frac{\mu_i}{N_i}\right) q^{n+1}\left(1+O_{m,\,\max\mathrm{deg} F_i,\,n}\left(q^{-1/2}\right)\right),$$ where $N_i=n\mathrm{deg}_xF_i$ is the generic degree of $F_i(t,f)$ for $\mathrm{deg} f=n$ and $\mu_i$ is the number of factors into which $F_i$ splits over $\bar{\mathbf{F}_q}$. Our proof relies on the classification of finite simple groups. We will also prove the same result for non-associate, irreducible and separable (over $\mathbf{F}_q(t)$) polynomials $F_1,\ldots,F_m$ not necessarily monic in $x$ under the assumptions that $n$ is greater than the number of geometric points of multiplicity greater than two on the (possibly reducible) affine plane curve $C$ defined by the equation $$\prod_{i=1}^mF_i(t,x)=0$$ (this number is always bounded above by $\left(\textstyle\sum_{i=1}^m\mathrm{deg} F_i\right)^2/2$, where $\mathrm{deg}$ denotes the total degree in $t,x$) and $$p=\mathrm{char}\,\mathbf{F}_q>\max_{1\le i\le m} N_i,$$ where $N_i$ is the generic degree of $F_i(t,f)$ for $\mathrm{deg} f=n$.

Artin-Schreier L-functions and Random Unitary Matrices

We give a new derivation of an identity due to Z. Rudnick and P. Sarnak about the $n$-level correlations of eigenvalues of random unitary matrices as well as a new proof of a formula due to M. Diaconis and P. Shahshahani expressing averages of trace products over the unitary matrix ensemble. Our method uses the zero statistics of Artin-Schreier L-functions and a deep equidistribution result due to N. Katz and P. Sarnak.
