The exterior Steklov problem for Euclidean domains

We investigate the Steklov eigenvalue problem in an exterior Euclidean domain. First, we present several formulations of this problem and establish the equivalences between them. Next, we examine various properties of the exterior Steklov eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. One of our main findings is an Escobar-type lower bound for the first exterior Steklov eigenvalue on convex domains in dimensions three and higher. This bound is expressed in terms of the principal curvatures of the boundary and is sharp, with equality attained for a ball. Moreover, it implies the existence of a sequence of convex domains with fixed volume and the first exterior Steklov eigenvalues tending to infinity. This contrasts with the interior case, as well as with the two-dimensional exterior case, for which we show that an analogue of the Weinstock isoperimetric inequality holds.

Upper bounds for the Steklov eigenvalues of warped products

We obtain upper bounds for the Steklov eigenvalues of warped products $Ω\times_hΣ$, where $Ω$ is a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary and $Σ$ is a closed Riemannian manifold. These bounds involve the volume of $Ω$ and of $\partialΩ$ as well as the eigenvalues of the Laplace operator on the fiber $Σ$ and the $L^p$-norm of the warping function $h$. The bounds are very different depending on the dimension $n$ of the fiber $Σ$ and the value of $p$. In some cases, we obtain optimal upper bounds and stability estimates.

Large Steklov eigenvalues under volume constraints

In this note we establish an expression for the Steklov spectrum of warped products in terms of auxiliary Steklov problems for drift Laplacians with weight induced by the warping factor. As an application, we show that a compact manifold with connected boundary diffeomorphic to a product admits a family of Riemannian metrics which coincide on the boundary, have fixed volume and arbitrarily large first non-zero Steklov eigenvalue. These are the first examples of Riemannian metrics with these properties on three-dimensional manifolds.

Some recent developments on the Steklov eigenvalue problem

The Steklov eigenvalue problem, first introduced over 125 years ago, has seen a surge of interest in the past few decades. This article is a tour of some of the recent developments linking the Steklov eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of compact Riemannian manifolds to the geometry of the manifolds. Topics include isoperimetric-type upper and lower bounds on Steklov eigenvalues (first in the case of surfaces and then in higher dimensions), stability and instability of eigenvalues under deformations of the Riemannian metric, optimisation of eigenvalues and connections to free boundary minimal surfaces in balls, inverse problems and isospectrality, discretisation, and the geometry of eigenfunctions. We begin with background material and motivating examples for readers that are new to the subject. Throughout the tour, we frequently compare and contrast the behavior of the Steklov spectrum with that of the Laplace spectrum. We include many open problems in this rapidly expanding area.

Metric upper bounds for Steklov and Laplace eigenvalues

We prove two upper bounds for the Steklov eigenvalues of a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. The first involves the volume of the manifold and of its boundary, as well as packing and volume growth constants of the boundary and its distortion. Its proof is based on a metric-measure space technique that was introduced by Colbois and Maerten. The second bound is in terms of the extrinsic diameter of the boundary and its injectivity radius. It is obtained from a concentration inequality, akin to Gromov-Milman concentration for closed manifolds. By applying these bounds to cylinders over closed manifold, we obtain bounds for eigenvalues of the Laplace operator, in the spirit of Grigor'yan-Netrusov-Yau and of Berger-Croke. For a family of manifolds that has uniformly bounded volume and boundary of fixed intrinsic geometry, we deduce that a large first nonzero Steklov eigenvalue implies that each boundary component is contained in a ball of small extrinsic radius.

The Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, the boundary Laplacian, and Hörmander's rediscovered manuscript

How close is the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map to the square root of the corresponding boundary Laplacian? This question has been actively investigated in recent years. Somewhat surprisingly, a lot of techniques involved can be traced back to a newly rediscovered manuscript of Hörmander from the 1950s. We present Hörmander's approach and its applications, with an emphasis on eigenvalue estimates and spectral asymptotics. In particular, we obtain results for the DtN maps on non-smooth boundaries in the Riemannian setting, the DtN operators for the Helmholtz equation and the DtN operators on differential forms.

Continuity of eigenvalues and shape optimisation for Laplace and Steklov problems

We associate a sequence of variational eigenvalues to any Radon measure on a compact Riemannian manifold. For particular choices of measures, we recover the Laplace, Steklov and other classical eigenvalue problems. In the first part of the paper we study the properties variational eigenvalues and establish a general continuity result, which shows for a sequence of measures converging in the dual of an appropriate Sobolev space, that the associated eigenvalues converge as well. The second part of the paper is devoted to various applications to shape optimization. The main theme is studying sharp isoperimetric inequalities for Steklov eigenvalues without any assumption on the number of connected components of the boundary. In particular, we solve the isoperimetric problem for each Steklov eigenvalue of planar domains: the best upper bound for the $k$-th perimeter-normalised Steklov eigenvalue is $8πk$, which is the best upper bound for the $k$-th area-normalised eigenvalue of the Laplacian on the sphere. The proof involves realising a weighted Neumann problem as a limit of Steklov problems on perforated domains. For $k = 1$, the number of connected boundary components of a maximizing sequence must tend to infinity, and we provide a quantitative lower bound on the number of connected components. A surprising consequence of our analysis is that any maximizing sequence of planar domains with fixed perimeter must collapse to a point.

Large Steklov eigenvalues via homogenisation on manifolds

Using methods in the spirit of deterministic homogenisation theory we obtain convergence of the Steklov eigenvalues of a sequence of domains in a Riemannian manifold to weighted Laplace eigenvalues of that manifold. The domains are obtained by removing small geodesic balls that are asymptotically densely uniformly distributed as their radius tends to zero. We use this relationship to construct manifolds that have large Steklov eigenvalues. In dimension two, and with constant weight equal to 1, we prove that Kokarev's upper bound of $8π$ for the first nonzero normalised Steklov eigenvalue on orientable surfaces of genus 0 is saturated. For other topological types and eigenvalue indices, we also obtain lower bounds on the best upper bound for the eigenvalue in terms of Laplace maximisers. For the first two eigenvalues, these lower bounds become equalities. A surprising consequence is the existence of free boundary minimal surfaces immersed in the unit ball by first Steklov eigenfunctions and with area strictly larger than $2π$. This was previously thought to be impossible. We provide numerical evidence that some of the already known examples of free boundary minimal surfaces have these properties and also exhibit simulations of new free boundary minimal surfaces of genus 0 in the unit ball with even larger area. The first nonzero Steklov eigenvalue of all these examples is equal to 1, as a consequence of their symmetries and topology, so that they verify a general conjecture by Fraser and Li. In dimension three and larger, we prove that the isoperimetric inequality of Colbois--El Soufi--Girouard is sharp and implies an upper bound for weighted Laplace eigenvalues. We also show that in any manifold with a fixed metric, one can construct by varying the weight a domain with connected boundary whose first nonzero normalised Steklov eigenvalue is arbitrarily large.

From Steklov to Neumann via homogenisation

We study a new link between the Steklov and Neumann eigenvalues of domains in Euclidean space. This is obtained through an homogenisation limit of the Steklov problem on a periodically perforated domain, converging to a family of eigenvalue problems with dynamical boundary conditions. For this problem, the spectral parameter appears both in the interior of the domain and on its boundary. This intermediary problem interpolates between Steklov and Neumann eigenvalues of the domain. As a corollary, we recover some isoperimetric type bounds for Neumann eigenvalues from known isoperimetric bounds for Steklov eigenvalues. The interpolation also leads to the construction of planar domains with first perimeter-normalized Stekov eigenvalue that is larger than any previously known example. The proofs are based on a modification of the energy method. It requires quantitative estimates for norms of harmonic functions. An intermediate step in the proof provides a homogenisation result for a transmission problem.

Robin spectrum: two disks maximize the third eigenvalue

The third eigenvalue of the Robin Laplacian on a simply-connected planar domain of given area is bounded above by the third eigenvalue of a disjoint union of two disks, provided the Robin parameter lies in a certain range and is scaled in each case by the length of the boundary. Equality is achieved when the domain degenerates suitably to the two disks.

The Steklov and Laplacian spectra of Riemannian manifolds with boundary

Given two compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary $M_1$ and $M_2$ such that their respective boundaries $Σ_1$ and $Σ_2$ admit neighborhoods $Ω_1$ and $Ω_2$ which are isometric, we prove the existence of a constant $C$, which depends only on the geometry of $Ω_1\congΩ_2$, such that $|σ_k(M_1)-σ_k(M_2)|\leq C$ for each $k\in\mathbb{N}$. This follows from a quantitative relationship between the Steklov eigenvalues $σ_k$ of a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ and the eigenvalues $λ_k$ of the Laplacian on its boundary. Our main result states that the difference $|σ_k-\sqrt{λ_k}|$ is bounded above by a constant which depends on the geometry of $M$ only in a neighborhood of its boundary. The proofs are based on a Pohozaev identity and on comparison geometry for principal curvatures of parallel hypersurfaces. In several situations, the constant $C$ is given explicitly in terms of bounds on the geometry of $Ω_1\congΩ_2$.

Hypersurfaces of Euclidean space with prescribed boundary and small Steklov eigenvalues

Given a smooth compact hypersurface $M$ with boundary $Σ=\partial M$, we prove the existence of a sequence $M_j$ of hypersurfaces with the same boundary as $M$, such that each Steklov eigenvalue $σ_k(M_j)$ tends to zero as $j$ tends to infinity. The hypersurfaces $M_j$ are obtained from $M$ by a local perturbation near a point of its boundary. Their volumes and diameters are arbitrarily close to those of $M$, while the principal curvatures of the boundary remain unchanged.

Compact manifolds with fixed boundary and large Steklov eigenvalues

Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. Let b>0 be the number of connected components of its boundary. For manifolds of dimension at least 3, we prove that it is possible to obtain an arbitrarily large (b+1)-th Steklov eigenvalue using a smooth conformal perturbation which is supported in a thin neighbourhood of the boundary, identically equal to 1 on the boundary. For j<b+1, it is also possible to obtain arbitrarily large j-th eigenvalue, but this require the conformal factor to spread throughout the interior of the manifold M. This is in stark contrast with the situation for the eigenvalues of the Laplace operator on a closed manifold, where a conformal factor that is large enough for the volume to become unbounded results in the spectrum collapsing to 0. We also prove that it is possible to obtain large Steklov eigenvalues while keeping different boundary components arbitrarily close to each other, by constructing a convenient Riemannian submersion.

Large spectral gaps for Steklov eigenvalues under volume constraints and under localized conformal deformations

In this paper we construct compact manifolds with fixed boundary geometry which admit Riemannian metrics of unit volume with arbitrarily large Steklov spectral gap. We also study the effect of localized conformal deformations that fix the boundary geometry. For instance, we prove that it is possible to make the spectral gap arbitrarily large using conformal deformations which are localized on domains of small measure, as long as the support of the deformations contains and connects each component of the boundary.

Steklov eigenvalues of submanifolds with prescribed boundary in Euclidean space

We obtain upper and lower bounds for Steklov eigenvalues of submanifolds with prescribed boundary in Euclidean space. A very general upper bound is proved, which depends only on the geometry of the fixed boundary and on the measure of the interior. Sharp lower bounds are given for hypersurfaces of revolution with connected boundary: we prove that each eigenvalue is uniquely minimized by the ball. We also observe that each surface of revolution with connected boundary is isospectral to the disk.

The Steklov spectrum of cuboids

The paper is concerned with the Steklov eigenvalue problem on cuboids of arbitrary dimension. We prove a two-term asymptotic formula for the counting function of Steklov eigenvalues on cuboids in dimension d greater or equal to 3. Apart from the standard Weyl term, we calculate explicitly the second term in the asymptotics, capturing the contribution of the (d-2)-dimensional facets of a cuboid. Our approach is based on lattice counting techniques. While this strategy is similar to the one used for the Dirichlet Laplacian, the Steklov case carries additional complications. In particular, it is not clear how to establish directly the completeness of the system of Steklov eigenfunctions admitting separation of variables. We prove this result using a family of auxiliary Robin boundary value problems. Moreover, the correspondence between the Steklov eigenvalues and lattice points is not exact, and hence more delicate analysis is required to obtain spectral asymptotics. Some other related results are presented, such as an isoperimetric inequality for the first Steklov eigenvalue, a concentration property of high frequency Steklov eigenfunctions and applications to spectral determination of cuboids.
