Where is my hand? Deep hand segmentation for visual self-recognition in humanoid robots

The ability to distinguish between the self and the background is of paramount importance for robotic tasks. The particular case of hands, as the end effectors of a robotic system that more often enter into contact with other elements of the environment, must be perceived and tracked with precision to execute the intended tasks with dexterity and without colliding with obstacles. They are fundamental for several applications, from Human-Robot Interaction tasks to object manipulation. Modern humanoid robots are characterized by high number of degrees of freedom which makes their forward kinematics models very sensitive to uncertainty. Thus, resorting to vision sensing can be the only solution to endow these robots with a good perception of the self, being able to localize their body parts with precision. In this paper, we propose the use of a Convolution Neural Network (CNN) to segment the robot hand from an image in an egocentric view. It is known that CNNs require a huge amount of data to be trained. To overcome the challenge of labeling real-world images, we propose the use of simulated datasets exploiting domain randomization techniques. We fine-tuned the Mask-RCNN network for the specific task of segmenting the hand of the humanoid robot Vizzy. We focus our attention on developing a methodology that requires low amounts of data to achieve reasonable performance while giving detailed insight on how to properly generate variability in the training dataset. Moreover, we analyze the fine-tuning process within the complex model of Mask-RCNN, understanding which weights should be transferred to the new task of segmenting robot hands. Our final model was trained solely on synthetic images and achieves an average IoU of 82% on synthetic validation data and 56.3% on real test data. These results were achieved with only 1000 training images and 3 hours of training time using a single GPU.

On the invariance of certain vanishing subspaces of Morrey spaces with respect to some classical operators

We consider subspaces of Morrey spaces defined in terms of various vanishing properties of functions. Such subspaces were recently used to describe the closure of $C_0^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n)$ in Morrey norm. We show that these subspaces are invariant with respect to some classical operators of harmonic analysis, such as the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator, singular type operators and Hardy operators. We also show that the vanishing properties defining those subspaces are preserved under the action of Riesz potential operators and fractional maximal operators.

Variable exponent Besov-Morrey spaces

In this paper we introduce Besov-Morrey spaces with all indices variable and study some fundamental properties. This includes a description in terms of Peetre maximal functions and atomic and molecular decompositions. This new scale of non-standard function spaces requires the introduction of variable exponent mixed Morrey-sequence spaces, which in turn are defined within the framework of semimodular spaces. In particular, we obtain a convolution inequality involving special radial kernels, which proves to be a key tool in this work.

Approximation in Morrey spaces

A new subspace of Morrey spaces whose elements can be approximated by infinitely differentiable compactly supported functions is introduced. Consequently, we give an explicit description of the closure of the set of such functions in Morrey spaces. A generalization of known embeddings of Morrey spaces into weighted Lesbesgue spaces is also obtained.

Atomic and molecular decompositions in variable exponent 2-microlocal spaces and applications

In this article we study atomic and molecular decompositions in $2$-microlocal Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces with variable integrability. We show that, in most cases, the convergence implied in such decompositions holds not only in the distributions sense, but also in the function spaces themselves. As an application, we give a simple proof for the denseness of the Schwartz class in such spaces. Some other properties, like Sobolev embeddings, are also obtained via atomic representations.

On 2-microlocal spaces with all exponents variable

In this paper we study various key properties for $2$-microlocal Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces with all exponents variable, including the lifting property, embeddings and Fourier multipliers. We also clarify and improve some statements recently published.
