Existence and regularity of random attractors for stochastic evolution equations driven by rough noise

This work establishes the existence and regularity of random pullback attractors for parabolic partial differential equations with rough nonlinear multiplicative noise under natural assumptions on the coefficients. To this aim, we combine tools from rough path theory and random dynamical systems.~An application is given by partial differential equations with rough boundary noise, for which flow transformations are not available.

Existence of smooth stable manifolds for a class of parabolic SPDEs with fractional noise

Little seems to be known about the invariant manifolds for stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by nonlinear multiplicative noise. Here we contribute to this aspect and analyze the Lu-Schmalfu{\ss} conjecture [Garrido-Atienza, et al., J. Differential Equations, 248(7):1637--1667, 2010] on the existence of stable manifolds for a class of parabolic SPDEs driven by nonlinear mutiplicative fractional noise. We emphasize that stable manifolds for SPDEs are infinite-dimensional objects, and the classical Lyapunov-Perron method cannot be applied, since the Lyapunov-Perron operator does not give any information about the backward orbit. However, by means of interpolation theory, we construct a suitable function space in which the discretized Lyapunov-Perron-type operator has a unique fixed point. Based on this we further prove the existence and smoothness of local stable manifolds for such SPDEs.

Bifurcation theory for SPDEs: finite-time Lyapunov exponents and amplitude equations

We consider a stochastic partial differential equation close to bifurcation of pitchfork type, where a one-dimensional space changes its stability. For finite-time Lyapunov exponents we characterize regions depending on the distance from bifurcation and the noise strength where finite-time Lyapunov exponents are positive and thus detect bifurcations. One technical tool is the reduction of the essential dynamics of the infinite dimensional stochastic system to a simple ordinary stochastic differential equation, which is valid close to the bifurcation.

Stochastic evolution equations with rough boundary noise

We investigate the pathwise well-posedness of stochastic evolution equations perturbed by multiplicative Neumann boundary noise, such as fractional Brownian motion for $H\in(1/3,1/2]$. Combining the controlled rough path approach with the theory of extrapolation operators, we establish global existence of solutions and flows for such equations. For Dirichlet boundary noise we obtain similar results in the Young regime.

Center Manifolds for Rough Partial Differential Equations

We prove a center manifold theorem for rough partial differential equations (rough PDEs). The class of rough PDEs we consider contains as a key subclass reaction-diffusion equations driven by nonlinear multiplicative noise, where the stochastic forcing is given by a $\gamma$-H\"older rough path, for $\gamma\in(1/3,1/2]$. Our proof technique relies upon the theory of rough paths and analytic semigroups in combination with a discretized Lyapunov-Perron-type method in a suitable scale of interpolation spaces. The resulting center manifold is a random manifold in the sense of the theory of random dynamical systems (RDS). We also illustrate our main theorem for reaction-diffusion equations as well as for the Swift-Hohenberg equation.

Amplitude equations for SPDEs driven by fractional additive noise with small Hurst parameter

We study stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with potentially very rough fractional noise with Hurst parameter $H\in(0,1)$. Close to a change of stability measured with a small parameter $\varepsilon$, we rely on the natural separation of time-scales and establish a simplified description of the essential dynamics. We prove that up to an error term bounded by a power of $\varepsilon$ depending on the Hurst parameter we can approximate the solution of the SPDE in first order by an SDE, the so called amplitude equation, and in second order by a fast infinite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. To this aim we need to establish an explicit averaging result for stochastic integrals driven by rough fractional noise for small Hurst parameters.

On the pitchfork bifurcation for the Chafee-Infante equation with additive noise

We investigate pitchfork bifurcations for a stochastic reaction diffusion equation perturbed by an infinite-dimensional Wiener process. It is well-known that the random attractor is a singleton, independently of the value of the bifurcation parameter; this phenomenon is often referred to as the "destruction" of the bifurcation by the noise. Analogous to the results of [Callaway et al., AIHP Probab. Stat., 53:1548-1574, 2017] for a 1D stochastic ODE, we show that some remnant of the bifurcation persists for this SPDE model in the form of a positive finite-time Lyapunov exponent. Additionally, we prove finite-time expansion of volume with increasing dimension as the bifurcation parameter crosses further eigenvalues of the Laplacian.

Global solutions for semilinear rough partial differential equations

We construct global-in-time solutions for semilinear parabolic rough partial differential equations. We work on a scale of Banach spaces tailored to the controlled rough path approach and derive suitable a-priori estimates of the solution which do not contain quadratic terms.

Warning signs for non-Markovian bifurcations: colour blindness and scaling laws

Warning signs for tipping points (or critical transitions) have been very actively studied. Although the theory has been applied successfully in models and in experiments for many complex systems such as for tipping in climate systems, there are ongoing debates, when warning signs can be extracted from data. In this work, we shed light on this debate by considering different types of underlying noise. Thereby, we significantly advance the general theory of warning signs for nonlinear stochastic dynamics. A key scenario deals with stochastic systems approaching a bifurcation point dynamically upon slow parameter variation. The stochastic fluctuations are generically able to probe the dynamics near a deterministic attractor to reveal critical slowing down. Using scaling laws near bifurcations, one can then anticipate the distance to a bifurcation. Previous warning signs results assume that the noise is Markovian, most often even white. Here, we study warning signs for non-Markovian systems including coloured noise and $\alpha$-regular Volterra processes (of which fractional Brownian motion and the Rosenblatt process are special cases). We prove that early warning scaling laws can disappear completely or drastically change their exponent based upon the parameters controlling the noise process. This provides a clear explanation, why applying standard warning signs results to reduced models of complex systems may not agree with data-driven studies. We demonstrate our results numerically in the context of a box model of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).

Random attractors via pathwise mild solutions for stochastic parabolic evolution equations

We investigate the longtime behavior of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with differential operators that depend on time and the underlying probability space. In particular, we consider stochastic parabolic evolution problems in Banach spaces with additive noise and prove the existence of random exponential attractors. These are compact random sets of finite fractal dimension that contain the global random attractor and are attracting at an exponential rate. In order to apply the framework of random dynamical systems, we use the concept of pathwise mild solutions. This approach is essential for our setting since the stochastic evolution equation cannot be transformed into a family of PDEs with random coefficients via the stationary Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.

Global martingale solutions for quasilinear SPDEs via the boundedness-by-entropy method

The existence of global-in-time bounded martingale solutions to a general class of cross-diffusion systems with multiplicative Stratonovich noise is proved. The equations describe multicomponent systems from physics or biology with volume-filling effects and possess a formal gradient-flow or entropy structure. This structure allows for the derivation of almost surely positive lower and upper bounds for the stochastic processes. The existence result holds under some assumptions on the interplay between the entropy density and the multiplicative noise terms. The proof is based on a stochastic Galerkin method, a Wong--Zakai type approximation of the Wiener process, the boundedness-by-entropy method, and the tightness criterion of Brze\'{z}niak and coworkers. Three-species Maxwell--Stefan systems and $n$-species biofilm models are examples that satisfy the general assumptions.

Dynamics of Stochastic Reaction-Diffusion Equations

Stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) represent a very active research field with numerous recent developments and breakthrough results. There are several well-established approaches and methods used to construct solutions for SPDEs, which is always a challenge due to the irregularity of the noise terms that perturb the equation. In applications, such noise terms can quantify the lack of knowledge of certain parameters, finite-size effects, and/or fluctuations occurring due to external perturbations. Since SPDEs have become a key modelling tool in applications, there has been a growing interest in studying their dynamical phenomena. The main goal of this work is to provide a survey on different approaches to solution theory and dynamical properties for SPDEs, which is accessible for a wide community interested in modern methods in stochastic analysis, dynamics and applications.

Random Attractors for Stochastic Partly Dissipative Systems

We prove the existence of a global random attractor for a certain class of stochastic partly dissipative systems. These systems consist of a partial (PDE) and an ordinary differential equation (ODE), where both equations are coupled and perturbed by additive white noise. The deterministic counterpart of such systems and their long-time behaviour have already been considered but there is no theory that deals with the stochastic version of partly dissipative systems in their full generality. We also provide several examples for the application of the theory.

Sample Paths Estimates for Stochastic Fast-Slow Systems driven by Fractional Brownian Motion

We analyze the effect of additive fractional noise with Hurst parameter $H > \frac{1}{2}$ on fast-slow systems. Our strategy is based on sample paths estimates, similar to the approach by Berglund and Gentz in the Brownian motion case. Yet, the setting of fractional Brownian motion does not allow us to use the martingale methods from fast-slow systems with Brownian motion. We thoroughly investigate the case where the deterministic system permits a uniformly hyperbolic stable slow manifold. In this setting, we provide a neighborhood, tailored to the fast-slow structure of the system, that contains the process with high probability. We prove this assertion by providing exponential error estimates on the probability that the system leaves this neighborhood. We also illustrate our results in an example arising in climate modeling, where time-correlated noise processes have become of greater relevance recently.

Rough center manifolds

Since the breakthrough in rough paths theory for stochastic ordinary differential equations (SDEs), there has been a strong interest in investigating the rough differential equation (RDE) approach and its numerous applications. Rough path techniques can stay closer to deterministic analytical methods and have the potential to transfer many pathwise ordinary differential equation (ODE) techniques more directly to a stochastic setting. However, there are few works that analyze dynamical properties of RDEs and connect the rough path / regularity structures, ODE and random dynamical systems approaches. Here we contribute to this aspect and analyze invariant manifolds for RDEs. By means of a suitably discretized Lyapunov-Perron-type method we prove the existence and regularity of local center manifolds for such systems. Our method directly works with the RDE and we exploit rough paths estimates to obtain the relevant contraction properties of the Lyapunov-Perron map.

Local mild solutions for rough stochastic partial differential equations

We investigate mild solutions for stochastic evolution equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion (fBm) with Hurst parameter H in (1/3, 1/2] in infinite-dimensional Banach spaces. Using elements from rough paths theory we introduce an appropriate integral with respect to the fBm. This allows us to solve pathwise our stochastic evolution equation in a suitable function space.

Pathwise mild solutions for quasilinear stochastic partial differential equations

Stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) have become a key modelling tool in applications. Yet, there are many classes of SPDEs, where the existence and regularity theory for solutions is not completely developed. Here we contribute to this aspect and prove the existence of mild solutions for a broad class of quasilinear Cauchy problems, including - among others - cross-diffusion systems as a key application. Our solutions are local-in-time and are derived via a fixed point argument in suitable function spaces. The key idea is to combine the classical theory of deterministic quasilinear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) with recent theory of evolution semigroups. We also show, how to apply our theory to the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto (SKT) model. Furthermore, we provide examples of blow-up and ill-posed operators, which can occur after finite-time showing that solutions can only be local-in-time for general quasilinear SPDEs, while they might be global-in-time for special subclasses of problems.
