Bihamiltonian tests for integrable systems associated to rank-$1$ F-CohFTs

Double ramification (DR) hierarchies associated to rank-$1$ F-CohFTs are important integrable perturbations of the Riemann--Hopf hierarchy. In this paper, we perform bihamiltonian tests for these DR hierarchies, and conjecture that the ones that are bihamiltonian form a $2$-parameter family. Remarkably, our computations suggest that there is a $1$-parameter subfamily of the rank-$1$ F-CohFTs, where the corresponding DR hierarchy is conjecturally Miura equivalent to the Camassa--Holm hierarchy. We also prove a conjecture regarding bihamiltonian Hodge hierarchies. Finally, we systematically study Miura invariants, and for another $1$-parameter subfamily propose a conjectural relation to the Degasperis--Procesi hierarchy.

Deformations of the Riemann hierarchy and the geometry of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$

The Riemann hierarchy is the simplest example of rank one, ($1$+$1$)-dimensional integrable system of nonlinear evolutionary PDEs. It corresponds to the dispersionless limit of the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy. In the language of formal variational calculus, we address the classification problem for deformations of the Riemann hierarchy satisfying different extra requirements (general deformations, deformations as systems of conservation laws, Hamiltonian deformations, and tau-symmetric deformations), under the natural group of coordinate transformations preserving each of those requirements. We present several results linking previous conjectures of Dubrovin-Liu-Yang-Zhang (for the tau-symmetric case) and of Arsie-Lorenzoni-Moro (for systems of conservation laws) to the double ramification hierarchy construction of integrable hierarchies from partial CohFTs and F-CohFTs. We prove that, if the conjectures are true, DR hierarchies of rank one are universal objects in the space of deformations of the Riemann hierarchy. We also prove a weaker version of the DLYZ conjecture and that the ALM conjecture implies (the main part of) the DLYZ conjecture. Finally we characterize those rank one F-CohFTs which give rise to Hamiltonian deformations of the Riemann hierarchy.

Open Hurwitz numbers and the mKP hierarchy

We give a natural definition of open Hurwitz numbers, where the weight of each ramified covering includes an integer parameter $N$ taken to the power that is equal to the number of boundary components of a Riemann surface with boundary mapping to $\mathbb{CP}^1$. We prove that the resulting sequence of partition functions, depending on $N\in\mathbb{Z}$, is a tau-sequence of the mKP hierarchy, or in other words it is a sequence of tau-functions of the KP hierarchy where each tau-function is obtained from the previous one by a Bäcklund-Darboux transformation. Our result is motivated by a previous observation of Alexandrov and the first two authors that the refined intersection numbers on the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces with boundary give a tau-sequence of the mKP hierarchy.

Quantum intersection numbers and the Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb{CP}^1$

The notion of a quantum tau-function for a natural quantization of the KdV hierarchy was introduced in a work of Dubrovin, Guéré, Rossi, and the second author. A certain natural choice of a quantum tau-function was then described by the first author, the coefficients of the logarithm of this series are called the quantum intersection numbers. Because of the Kontsevich-Witten theorem, a part of the quantum intersection numbers coincides with the classical intersection numbers of psi-classes on the moduli spaces of stable algebraic curves. In this paper, we relate the quantum intersection numbers to the stationary relative Gromov-Witten invariants of $(\mathbb{CP}^1,0,\infty)$ with an insertion of a Hodge class. Using the Okounkov-Pandharipande approach to such invariants (with the trivial Hodge class) through the infinite wedge formalism, we then give a short proof of an explicit formula for the ``purely quantum'' part of the quantum intersection numbers, found by the first author, which in particular relates these numbers to the one-part double Hurwitz numbers.

Bihamiltonian structure of the DR hierarchy in the semisimple case

Of the two approaches to integrable systems associated to semisimple cohomological field theories (CohFTs), the one suggested by Dubrovin and Zhang and the more recent one using the geometry of the double ramification (DR) cycle, the second has the advantage of being very explicit. The Poisson operator of the DR hierarchy is $η^{-1} \partial_x$, where $η$ is the metric of the CohFT, and the Hamiltonians are explicitly defined as generating functions of intersection numbers of the CohFT with the DR cycle, the top Hodge class $λ_g$, and powers of a psi-class. The question whether the DR hierarchy is endowed with a bihamiltonian structure appeared to be much harder. In our previous work in collaboration with S. Shadrin, when the CohFT is homogeneous, we proposed an explicit formula for a differential operator and conjectured that it would provide the required bihamiltonian structure. In this paper, we prove this conjecture. Our proof is based on two recently proved results: the equivalence of the DR hierarchy and the Dubrovin-Zhang hierarchy of a semisimple CohFT under Miura transformation and the polynomiality of the second Poisson bracket of the DZ hierarchy of a homogeneous semisimple CohFT. In particular, our second Poisson bracket coincides through the DR/DZ equivalence with the second Poisson bracket of the DZ hierarchy, hence providing a remarkably explicit approach to their bihamiltonian structure.

An application of the nonlinear reciprocal transformations in the theory of DR hierarchies

We prove that the DR hierarchy corresponding to the family of F-cohomological field theories without unit considered in a previous work of the first author together with D. Gubarevich can be ``trivialized'', i.e. reduced to two copies of the KdV hierarchy, using a simple nonlinear reciprocal transformation. This gives the first manifestation of a role of nonlinear reciprocal transformation in the theory of integrable systems associated to the moduli spaces of stable curves, beyond the dispersionless limit.

Intersection numbers with Pixton's class and the noncommutative KdV hierarchy

The Pixton class is a nonhomogeneous cohomology class on the moduli space of stable curves $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$, with nontrivial terms in degree $0,2,4,\ldots,2g$, whose top degree part coincides with the double ramification cycle. In this paper, we prove our conjecture from a previous work, claiming that the generating series of intersection numbers of the Pixton class with monomials in the psi-classes gives a solution of the noncommutative KdV hierarchy.

Counting meromorphic differentials on $\mathbb{CP}^1$

We give explicit formulas for the number of meromorphic differentials on $\mathbb{CP}^1$ with two zeros and any number of residueless poles and for the number of meromorphic differentials on $\mathbb{CP}^1$ with one zero, two poles with unconstrained residue and any number of residueless poles, in terms of the orders of their zeros and poles. These are the only two finite families of differentials on $\mathbb{CP}^1$ with vanishing residue conditions at a subset of poles, up to the action of $\mathrm{PGL}(2,\mathbb{C})$. The first family of numbers is related to triple Hurwitz numbers by simple integration and we show its connection with the representation theory of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ and the equations of the dispersionless KP hierarchy. The second family has a very simple generating series, and we recover it through surprisingly involved computations using intersection theory of moduli spaces of curves and differentials.

Integrable systems of finite type from F-cohomological field theories without unit

One of many manifestations of a deep relation between the topology of the moduli spaces of algebraic curves and the theory of integrable systems is a recent construction of Arsie, Lorenzoni, Rossi, and the first author associating an integrable system of evolutionary PDEs to an F-cohomological field theory (F-CohFT), which is a collection of cohomology classes on the moduli spaces of curves satisfying certain natural splitting properties. Typically, these PDEs have an infinite expansion in the dispersive parameter, which happens because they involve contributions from the moduli spaces of curves of arbitrarily large genus. In this paper, for each rank $N\ge 2$, we present a family of F-CohFTs without unit, for which the equations of the associated integrable system have a finite expansion in the dispersive parameter. For $N=2$, we explicitly compute the primary flows of this integrable system.

Open $r$-spin theory II: The analogue of Witten's conjecture for $r$-spin disks

We conclude the construction of $r$-spin theory in genus zero for Riemann surfaces with boundary. In particular, we define open $r$-spin intersection numbers, and we prove that their generating function is closely related to the wave function of the $r$th Gelfand-Dickey integrable hierarchy. This provides an analogue of Witten's $r$-spin conjecture in the open setting and a first step toward the construction of an open version of Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten theory. As an unexpected consequence, we establish a mysterious relationship between open $r$-spin theory and an extension of Witten's closed theory.

Open $r$-spin theory III: a prediction for higher genus

In our previous two papers, we constructed an $r$-spin theory in genus zero for Riemann surfaces with boundary and fully determined the corresponding intersection numbers, providing an analogue of Witten's $r$-spin conjecture in genus zero in the open setting. In particular, we proved that the generating series of open $r$-spin intersection numbers is determined by the genus-zero part of a special solution of a certain extension of the Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy, and we conjectured that the whole solution controls the open $r$-spin intersection numbers in all genera, which do not yet have a geometric definition. In this paper, we provide geometric and algebraic evidence for the correctness of this conjecture.

Semisimple flat F-manifolds in higher genus

In this paper, we generalize the Givental theory for Frobenius manifolds and cohomological field theories to flat F-manifolds and F-cohomological field theories. In particular, we define a notion of Givental cone for flat F-manifolds, and we provide a generalization of the Givental group as a matrix loop group acting on them. We show that this action is transitive on semisimple flat F-manifolds. We then extend this action to F-cohomological field theories in all genera. We show that, given a semisimple flat F-manifold and a Givental group element connecting it to the constant flat F-manifold at its origin, one can construct a family of F-CohFTs in all genera, parameterized by a vector in the associative algebra at the origin, whose genus $0$ part is the given flat F-manifold. If the flat F-manifold is homogeneous, then the associated family of F-CohFTs contains a subfamily of homogeneous F-CohFTs. However, unlike in the case of Frobenius manifolds and CohFTs, these homogeneous F-CohFTs can have different conformal dimensions, which are determined by the properties of a certain metric associated to the flat F-manifold.

Tautological relations and integrable systems

We present a family of conjectural relations in the tautological cohomology of the moduli spaces of stable algebraic curves of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points. A large part of these relations has a surprisingly simple form: the tautological classes involved in the relations are given by stable graphs that are trees and that are decorated only by powers of the psi-classes at half-edges. We show that the proposed conjectural relations imply certain fundamental properties of the Dubrovin-Zhang (DZ) and the double ramification (DR) hierarchies associated to F-cohomological field theories. Our relations naturally extend a similar system of conjectural relations, which were proposed in an earlier work of the first author together with Gu\'er\'e and Rossi and which are responsible for the normal Miura equivalence of the DZ and the DR hierarchy associated to an arbitrary cohomological field theory. Finally, we prove all the above mentioned relations in the case $n=1$ and arbitrary $g$ using a variation of the method from a paper by Liu and Pandharipande, this can be of independent interest. In particular, this proves the main conjecture from our previous joined work together with Hern\'andez Iglesias. We also prove all the above mentioned relations in the case $g=0$ and arbitrary $n$.

A construction of open descendant potentials in all genera

We present a construction of an open analogue of total descendant and total ancestor potentials via an "open version" of Givental's action. Our construction gives a genus expansion for an arbitrary solution to the open WDVV equations satisfying a semisimplicity condition and admitting a unit. We show that the open total descendant potentials we define satisfy the open topological recursion relations in genus 0 and 1, the open string and open dilaton equations. We finish the paper with a computation of the simplest nontrivial open correlator in genus 1 using our construction.

Open $\mathbb{CP}^1$ descendent theory I: The stationary sector

We define stationary descendent integrals on the moduli space of stable maps from disks to $(\mathbb{CP}^1,\mathbb{RP}^1)$. We prove a localization formula for the stationary theory involving contributions from the fixed points and from all the corner-strata. We use the localization formula to prove a recursion relation and a closed formula for all genus $0$ disk cover invariants in the stationary case. For all higher genus invariants, we propose a conjectural formula.

A formula for the Gromov-Witten potential of an elliptic curve

An algorithm to determine all the Gromov-Witten invariants of any smooth projective curve was obtained by Okounkov and Pandharipande in 2006. They identified stationary invariants with certain Hurwitz numbers and then presented Virasoro type constraints that allow to determine all the other Gromov-Witten invariants in terms of the stationary ones. In the case of an elliptic curve, we show that these Virasoro type constraints can be explicitly solved leading to a very explicit formula for the full Gromov-Witten potential in terms of the stationary invariants.

A conjectural formula for $DR_g(a,-a) λ_g$

We propose a conjectural formula for $DR_g(a,-a) λ_g$ and check all its expected properties. Our formula refines the one point case of a similar conjecture made by the first named author in collaboration with Guéré and Rossi, and we prove that the two conjectures are in fact equivalent, though in a quite non-trivial way.

A generalization of Witten's conjecture for the Pixton class and the noncommutative KdV hierarchy

In this paper, we formulate and present ample evidence towards the conjecture that the partition function (i.e. the exponential of the generating series of intersection numbers with monomials in psi classes) of the Pixton class on the moduli space of stable curves is the topological tau function of the noncommutative KdV hierarchy, which we introduced in a previous work. The specialization of this conjecture to the top degree part of Pixton's class states that the partition function of the double ramification cycle is the tau function of the dispersionless limit of this hierarchy. In fact, we prove that this conjecture follows from the Double Ramification/Dubrovin--Zhang equivalence conjecture. We also provide several independent computational checks in support of it.
