Quark number fluctuations at high temperatures

We calculate the second, fourth and sixth order quark number fluctuations in the deconfined phase of 2+1 flavor QCD using lattices with temporal extent Nt=4, 6, 8 and 12. We consider light, strange and charm quarks. We use p4 action for valence quarks and gauge configurations generated with p4 action with physical value of the strange quark mass and light quark mass mq=0.1ms generated by the RBC-Bielefeld collaboration. We observe that for all quark masses the quark number fluctuations rapidly get close to the corresponding ideal gas limits. We compare our results to predictions of a quasi-particle model and resummed high temperature perturbative calculations. We also investigate correlations among different flavor channels.

Quarkonium at Finite Temperature

We discuss properties of heavy quarkonium states at high temperatures based on lattice QCD and potential models. We review recent progress made in lattice calculations of spatial static quark anti-quark correlators as well as quarkonium correlators in Euclidean time. Recent developments in effective field theory approach and potential models are also discussed.

Color singlet and adjoint free energy at finite temperature

We study correlation functions of static quark-antiquark pairs in SU(2) gauge theory at finite temperature. By measuring Polyakov loop correlators and temporal Wilson loops with APE smearing of spatial links we are able to give consistent definitions of the singlet and adjoint free energies at short distances, where the notion of these free energies is meaningful. APE smearing procedure allows to achieve a high degree of overlap in the singlet channel and to reconstruct the adjoint part from the color averaged and singlet free energy.

Entanglement entropy in SU(N) gauge theory

The entanglement entropy of SU(N) lattice gauge theory is studied exactly in 1+1 space-time dimensions and in Migdal-Kadanoff approximation in higher dimensional space. The existence of a non-analytical behavior reminiscent of a phase transition for a characteristic size of the entangled region is demonstrated for higher dimensional theories.

Finite temperature SU(2) gauge theory: critical coupling and universality class

We examine SU(2) gauge theory in 3+1 dimensions at finite temperature in the vicinity of critical point. For various lattice sizes in time direction ($N_τ=1,2,4,8$) we extract high precision values of the inverse critical coupling and critical values of the 4-th order cumulant of Polyakov loops (Binder cumulant). We check the universality class of the theory by comparing the cumulant values to that of the 3D Ising model and find very good agreement. The Polyakov loop correlators for the indicated lattices are also measured and the string tension values extracted. The high precision values of critical coupling and string tension allow us to study the scaling of dimensionless $T_c/\sqrtσ$ ratio. The violation of scaling by <10% is observed as the coupling is varied from weak to strong coupling regime.

Entanglement entropy in d+1 SU(N) gauge theory

We consider the entanglement entropy for a sub-system in d+1 dimensional SU(N) lattice gauge theory. The 1+1 gauge theory is treated exactly and shows trivial behavior. Gauge theories in higher dimensions are treated within Migdal-Kadanoff approximation. We consider the gauge theory in the confinement phase. We demonstrate the existence of a non-analytical change from the short distance to long distance form in the entanglement entropy in such systems (d>2) reminiscent of a phase transition. The transition is manifested in nontrivial change in the RG flow of the character expansion coefficients defining the partition function.

Equilibrium criterion and effective spin models for finite temperature gauge theories

Using the example of the SU(2) gauge theory in 3+1 dimensions we consider the construction of a 3-dimensional effective model in terms of Polyakov loops. We demonstrate the application of an equilibrium self-consistency condition to the systematic analysis of the contribution of various (global Z(2) symmetric) terms in the effective model action. We apply this analysis to the construction of a simple effective action with the minimum necessary number of operators. Such an action is shown to be capable of reproducing relevant observables, e.g. the Polyakov loop ensemble average, within the desired accuracy.

RG decimation study of SU(2) gauge theory

We report on numerical studies of RG decimations in SU(2) gauge theory. We study in particular a class of plaquette actions involving sums of group representations. We measure a number of observables representative of different length scales in order to investigate the transformation of the system under different choices of spin blocking, and examine the flow of the effective action couplings. A need for a projection to some class of effective actions on the configurations resulting from the adopted numerical decimation procedures is demonstrated. A numerical decimation procedure resulting in the effective single plaquette Lagrangian tailored to reproduce different medium/large scale physics is devised.

Glauber dynamics of phase transitions: SU(3) lattice gauge theory

Motivated by questions about the QCD deconfining phase transition, we studied in two previous papers Model A (Glauber) dynamics of 2D and 3D Potts models, focusing on structure factor evolution under heating (heating in the gauge theory notation, i.e., cooling of the spin systems). In the present paper we set for 3D Potts models (Ising and 3-state) the scale of the dynamical effects by comparing to equilibrium results at first and second order phase transition temperatures, obtained by re-weighting from a multicanonical ensemble. Our finding is that the dynamics entirely overwhelms the critical and non-critical equilibrium effects. In the second half of the paper we extend our results by investigating the Glauber dynamics of pure SU(3) lattice gauge on $N_τ N_σ^3$ lattices directly under heating quenches from the confined into the deconfined regime. The exponential growth factors of the initial response are calculated, which give Debye screening mass estimates. The quench leads to competing vacuum domains of distinct $Z_3$ triality, which delay equilibration of pure gauge theory forever, while their role in full QCD remains a subtle question. As in spin systems we find for pure SU(3) gauge theory a dynamical growth of structure factors, reaching maxima which scale approximately with the volume of the system, before settling down to equilibrium. Their influence on various observables is studied and different lattice sizes are simulated to illustrate an approach to a finite volume continuum limit. Strong correlations are found during the dynamical process, but not in the deconfined phase at equilibrium.

Model A Dynamics and the Deconfining Phase Transition for Pure Lattice Gauge Theory

We consider model A dynamics for a heating quench from the disordered (confined) into the ordered (deconfined) phase of SU(3) lattice gauge theory. For $4 N_σ^3$ lattices the exponential growth factors of low-lying structure function modes are calculated. The linear theory of spinodal decompositions is compared with the data from an effective model and the Debye screening mass is estimated from the critical mode. Further, the quench leads to competing vacuum domains, which make the equilibration of the QCD vacuum after the heating non-trivial. We investigate the influence of such domains on the gluonic energy density.

Dynamics of Phase Transitions: The 3D 3-state Potts model

In studies of the QCD deconfining phase transition or cross-over by means of heavy ion experiments, one ought to be concerned about non-equilibrium effects due to heating and cooling of the system. In this paper we extend our previous study of Glauber dynamics of 2D Potts models to the 3D 3-state Potts model, which serves as an effective model for some QCD properties. We investigate the linear theory of spinodal decomposition in some detail. It describes the early time evolution of the 3D model under a quench from the disordered into the ordered phase well, but fails in 2D. Further, the quench leads to competing vacuum domains, which are difficult to equilibrate, even in the presence of a small external magnetic field. From our hysteresis study we find, as before, a dynamics dominated by spinodal decomposition. There is evidence that some effects survive in the case of a cross-over. But the infinite volume extrapolation is difficult to control, even with lattices as large as $120^3$.

Dynamics of Phase Transitions by Hysteresis Methods I

In studies of the QCD deconfining phase transition or crossover by means of heavy ion experiments, one ought to be concerned about non-equilibrium effects due to heating and cooling of the system. Motivated by this, we look at hysteresis methods to study the dynamics of phase transitions. Our systems are temperature driven through the phase transition using updating procedures in the Glauber universality class. Hysteresis calculations are presented for a number of observables, including the (internal) energy, properties of Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters and structure functions. We test the methods for 2d Potts models, which provide a rich collection of phase transitions with a number of rigorously known properties. Comparing with equilibrium configurations we find a scenario where the dynamics of the transition leads to a spinodal decomposition which dominates the statistical properties of the configurations. One may expect an enhancement of low energy gluon production due to spinodal decomposition of the Polyakov loops, if such a scenario is realized by nature.

Dynamics of the 2d Potts model phase transition

The dynamics of 2d Potts models, which are temperature driven through the phase transition using updating procedures in the Glauber universality class, is investigated. We present calculations of the hysteresis for the (internal) energy and for Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters. The shape of the hysteresis is used to define finite volume estimators of physical observables, which can be used to study the approach to the infinite volume limit. We compare with equilibrium configurations and the preliminary indications are that the dynamics leads to considerable alterations of the statistical properties of the configurations studied.
