Lifetimes and HQE

Kolya Uraltsev was one of the inventors of the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE), that describes inclusive weak decays of hadrons containing heavy quarks and in particular lifetimes. Besides giving a pedagogic introduction to the subject, we review the development and the current status of the HQE, which just recently passed several non-trivial experimental tests with an unprecedented precision. In view of many new experimental results for lifetimes of heavy hadrons, we also update several theory predictions: $τ(B^+) / τ(B_d) = 1.04^{+0.05}_{-0.01} \pm 0.02 \pm 0.01$, $τ(B_s) / τ(B_d) = 1.001 \pm 0.002$, $τ(Λ_b)/ τ(B_d) = 0.935 \pm 0.054$ and $\bar τ (Ξ_b^0) / \barτ (Ξ_b^+) = 0.95 \pm 0.06$. The theoretical precision is currently strongly limited by the unknown size of the non-perturbative matrix elements of four-quark operators, which could be determined with lattice simulations.

Bs mixing observables and Vtd/Vts from sum rules

We consider the effects of a non-vanishing strange-quark mass in the determination of the full basis of dimension six matrix elements for $B_{s}$ mixing, in particular we get for the ratio of the $V-A$ Bag parameter in the $B_s$ and $B_d$ system: $\overline{B}^s_{Q_1} / \overline{B}^d_{Q_1} = 0.987^{+0.007}_{-0.009}$. Combining these results with the most recent lattice values for the ratio of decay constants $f_{B_s} / f_{B_d}$ we obtain the most precise determination of the ratio $ξ= f_{B_s} \sqrt{\overline{B}^s_{Q_1}}/ f_{B_d} \sqrt{\overline{B}^d_{Q_1}} = 1.2014^{+0.0065}_{-0.0072}$ in agreement with recent lattice determinations. We find $ΔM_s=(18.5_{-1.5}^{+1.2})\text{ps}^{-1}$ and $ΔM_d=(0.547_{-0.046}^{+0.035})\text{ps}^{-1}$ to be consistent with experiments at below one sigma. Assuming the validity of the SM, our calculation can be used to directly determine the ratio of CKM elements $|V_{td} / V_{ts} | = 0.2045^{+0.0012}_{-0.0013}$, which is compatible with the results from the CKM fitting groups, but again more precise.

$B_s$-$\bar B_s$ mixing interplay with $B$ anomalies

After reviewing the theoretical uncertainties entering the Standard Model determination of the mass difference of the neutral $B_s$-$\bar B_s$ meson system, $ΔM_s^{\rm SM}$, we discuss the implications of its updated value for new physics models addressing the experimental anomalies in semi-leptonic $B$ decays. Using the most recent FLAG average of lattice results for the non-perturbative matrix elements and the CKM-fitter determination of $V_{cb}$ points to a $1.8 \, σ$ discrepancy in $ΔM_s^{\rm SM} > ΔM_s^{\rm exp}$. Extending the analysis in Ref. [1] we show that the latter tension cannot be easily accommodated within single mediator models, whenever the same mediator is also responsible for the $b \to s \ell \ell$ anomalies.

Theory of Mixing and CP violation

We review the current status of B-mixing observables and point out the crucial importance of a control of the hadronic uncertainties for ruling out or confirming hints of BSM physics. In addition we introduce a rating system for theory predictions for lifetimes and mixing observables, that classifies the quality of the corresponding SM values ranging from no star to ****

Charming new physics in rare B-decays and mixing?

We conduct a systematic study of the impact of new physics in quark-level $b \to c \bar{c} s$ transitions on $B$-physics, in particular rare $B$-decays and $B$-meson lifetime observables. We find viable scenarios where a sizable effect in rare semileptonic $B$-decays can be generated, compatible with experimental indications and with a possible dependence on the dilepton invariant mass, while being consistent with constraints from radiative $B$-decay and the measured $B_s$ width difference. We show how, if the effect is generated at the weak scale or beyond, strong renormalisation-group effects can enhance the impact on semileptonic decays while leaving radiative $B$-decay largely unaffected. A good complementarity of the different $B$-physics observables implies that precise measurements of lifetime observables at LHCb may be able to confirm, refine, or rule out this scenario.

On the ultimate precision of meson mixing observables

Meson mixing is considered to be an ideal candidate for new physics searches. Current experimental precision has greatly increased over the recent years, excelling in several cases the theoretical precision. A possible limit in the theoretical accuracy could be a hypothetical breakdown of quark-hadron duality. We propose a simple model for duality violations and give stringent bounds on such effects for mixing observables, indicating regions, where future measurements of $ΔΓ_d$, $a_{sl}^d$ and $a_{sl}^s$ would be clear signals of new physics. Finally, we turn our attention to the charm sector, and reveal that already a modest duality violation of about $20 \%$ could explain the huge difference between HQE predictions for D-mixing and experimental data.

One constraint to kill them all?

Many new physics models that explain the intriguing anomalies in the $b$-quark flavour sector are severely constrained by $B_s$-mixing, for which the Standard Model prediction and experiment agreed well until recently. The most recent FLAG average of lattice results for the non-perturbative matrix elements points, however, in the direction of a small discrepancy in this observable. Using up-to-date inputs from standard sources such as PDG, FLAG and one of the two leading CKM fitting groups to determine $ΔM_s^{\rm SM}$, we find a severe reduction of the allowed parameter space of $Z'$ and leptoquark models explaining the $B$-anomalies. Remarkably, in the former case the upper bound on the $Z'$ mass approaches dangerously close to the energy scales already probed by the LHC. We finally identify some model building directions in order to alleviate the tension with $B_s$-mixing.

Charming Dark Matter

We have considered a model of Dark Minimal Flavour Violation (DMFV), in which a triplet of dark matter particles couple to right-handed up-type quarks via a heavy colour-charged scalar mediator. By studying a large spectrum of possible constraints, and assessing the entire parameter space using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), we can place strong restrictions on the allowed parameter space for dark matter models of this type.

Double-charming Higgs identification using machine-learning assisted jet shapes

We study the possibility of identifying a boosted resonance that decays into a charm pair against different sources of background using QCD event shapes, which are promoted to jet shapes. Using a set of jet shapes as input to a boosted decision tree, we find that observables utilizing the simultaneous presence of two charm quarks can access complementary information compared to approaches relying on two independent charm tags. Focusing on Higgs associated production with subsequent $H\to c \bar{c}$ decay and on a CP-odd scalar $A$ with $m_A \leq 10$ GeV we obtain the limits $\mathcal{B}r(H\rightarrow c\bar{c})\leq 6.09\%$ and $\mathcal{B}r(H\rightarrow A(\rightarrow c\bar{c}) Z)\leq 0.01\%$ at $95\%$ C. Theory Overview

We set the scene for theoretical issues in charm physics that were discussed at CHARM 2016 in Bologna. In particular we emphasize the importance of improving our understanding of standard model contributions to numerous charm observables and we discuss also possible tests of our theory tools, like the Heavy Quark Expansion via the lifetime ratios of $D$-mesons

On new physics in $ΔΓ_d$

Motivated by the recent measurement of the dimuon asymmetry by the DØ collaboration, which could be interpreted as an enhanced decay rate difference in the neutral $B_d$-meson system, we investigate the possible size of new-physics contributions to $ΔΓ_d$. In particular, we perform model-independent studies of non-standard effects associated to the dimension-six current-current operators $(\bar{d} p)(\bar p^{\hspace{0.25mm}\prime} b)$ with $p,p^\prime= u,c$ as well as $(\bar{d}b) (\barττ)$. In both cases we find that for certain flavour or Lorentz structures of the operators sizable deviations of $ΔΓ_d$ away from the Standard Model expectation cannot be excluded in a model-independent fashion.

New physics effects in tree-level decays

We critically review the assumption that no new physics is acting in tree-level $B$-meson decays and study the consequences for the ultimate precision in the direct determination of the CKM angle $γ$. In our exploratory study we find that sizable universal new physics contributions, $ΔC_{1,2}$, to the tree-level Wilson coefficients $C_{1,2}$ of the effective Hamiltonian describing weak decays of the $b$ quark are currently not excluded by experimental data. In particular we find that Im $ΔC_1 $ and Im $ΔC_2 $ can easily be of order $\pm 10%$ without violating any constraints from data. Such a size of new physics effects in $C_1$ and $C_2$ corresponds to an intrinsic uncertainty in the CKM angle $γ$ of the order of $|δγ| \approx 4^\circ$, which is slightly below the current experimental precision. The accuracy in the determination of $γ$ can be improved by putting stronger constraints on the tree-level Wilson coefficients, in particular $C_1$. To this end we suggest a more refined theoretical study as well as a more precise measurements of the observables that currently provide the strongest bounds on hypothetical new weak phases in $C_1$ and $C_2$. We note that the semi-leptonic CP asymmetries seem to have the best prospect for improving the bound on the weak phase in $C_1$.

Investigating bounds on decoherence in quantum mechanics via B and D-mixing

We investigate bounds on decoherence in quantum mechanics by studying $B$ and $D$-mixing observables, making use of many precise new measurements, particularly from the LHC and B factories. In that respect we show that the stringent bounds obtained by a different group in 2013 rely on unjustified assumptions. Finally, we point out which experimental measurements could improve the decoherence bounds considerably.

$B$-mixing in and beyond the Standard model

We review the status of mixing of neutral $B$-mesons, including a discussion of the current precision of Standard Model (SM) predictions as well as the space that is left for effects of new physics. In that respect we present several observables, which are particularly sensitive to the remaining new physics (NP) parameter space. $B$-mixing can also be used to test the fundaments of quantum mechanics, here we suggest a new measurement of the ratio of like-sign dilepton events to opposite-sign dilepton events. Finally we summarise briefly the status of lifetimes of heavy hadrons. The corresponding theory predictions rely on the same tool - the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE) - as some of the mixing quantities. New experimental data has recently proven the validity of the HQE to a high accuracy. However, the theoretical precision of lifetime predictions is strongly limited by a lack of non-perturbative evaluations of matrix elements of dimension-six operators.

Selected Topics in Heavy Flavour Physics

We review the status of flavour physics in spring 2014. The numerous accurate new measurements of flavour experiments have enabled us to test our theoretical understanding of flavour processes with an unprecedented precision. At first sight the dominant amount of measurements seems to be standard model like. Having a closer look one finds, however, that in most of the observables there is still some considerable space for new effects. In addition many discrepancies are still not settled yet. For further investigations and definite conclusions an improvement of the theoretical precision as well as the experimental one is mandatory.

What did we learn in theory from the $ΔA_{CP}$-saga?

The measurement of CP violation in the charm sector triggered a lot of theoretical activities and re-considerations. Nevertheless currently neither theory nor experiment have reached definite conclusions about the origin of a large CP violating effect in hadronic $D$ decays. We review briefly (part of) the current theory literature and present as the most important outcome of the many investigations initial steps in a long journey to understand the standard model contribution to hadronic $D$ meson decays from first principles as well as various control channels, that can be studied by experiment.

D-meson lifetimes within the heavy quark expansion

Even if new data indicate that direct CP violation in D-meson decays is compatible with the standard model expectation, it has triggered a lot of interest, and charm phenomenology will remain an essential part of new physics searches due to its unique role as a probe for flavor-changing neutral currents among up-type quarks. Charm physics poses considerable theoretical challenges, because the charm mass is neither light nor truly heavy. The heavy quark expansion (HQE) provides a perturbative expansion in the inverse heavy quark mass for inclusive rates. It has proved to be very successful in the B sector, yet its validity for charm decays has often been questioned. We present results of a HQE study of D-meson lifetimes including NLO QCD and subleading 1/m_c corrections. We find good agreement with experimental data, but with huge hadronic uncertainties due to missing lattice input for hadronic matrix elements.
