$a$-potent Schwarz matrices and Bessel-like Jacobi polynomials

We consider the problem of the reconstruction of a Schwarz matrix from exactly one given eigenvalue. This inverse eigenvalue problem leads to the Jacobi orthogonal polynomials~$\{P_k^{(-n,n)}\}_{k=0}^{n-1}$ that can be treated as a discrete finite analogue of Bessel polynomials.

Lattice paths and branched continued fractions. III. Generalizations of the Laguerre, rook and Lah polynomials

We introduce a triangular array $\widehat{\sf L}^{(\alpha)}$ of 5-variable homogeneous polynomials that enumerate Laguerre digraphs (digraphs in which each vertex has out-degree 0 or 1 and in-degree 0 or 1) with separate weights for peaks, valleys, double ascents, double descents, and loops. These polynomials generalize the classical Laguerre polynomials as well as the rook and Lah polynomials. We show that this triangular array is totally positive and that the sequence of its row-generating polynomials is Hankel-totally positive, under suitable restrictions on the values given to the indeterminates. This implies, in particular, the coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity of the monic unsigned univariate Laguerre polyomials. Our proof uses the method of production matrices as applied to exponential Riordan arrays. Our main technical lemma concerns the total positivity of a large class of quadridiagonal production matrices; it generalizes the tridiagonal comparison theorem. In some cases these polynomials are given by a branched continued fraction. Our constructions are motivated in part by recurrences for the multiple orthogonal polynomials associated to weights based on modified Bessel functions of the first kind $I_\alpha$.

Trigonometric identities: from Hermite via Meijer, N{\o}rlund and Braaksma to Chu and Johnson and beyond

Known already to the ancient Greeks, today trigonometric identities come in a large variety of tastes and flavours. In this large family there is a subfamily of interpolation-like identities discovered by Hermite and revived rather recently in two independent papers, one by Wenchang Chu and the other by Warren Johnson exploring various forms and generalizations of Hermite's results. The goal of this work inspired by these two articles is twofold. The first goal is to fill a gap in the references from the above papers and exhibit various trigonometric identities discovered by Meijer, N{\o}rlund and Braaksma between 1940 and 1962 in the context of analytic continuation of Mellin-Barnes integrals and relations between different solutions of the generalized hypergeometric differential equation. Our second goal is to present some extensions of Chu's and Johnson's results by combining them with the ideas of Meijer and Braaksma adding certain sum manipulations and facts from the complex analysis. We unify and systematize various known and new identities and illustrate our results with numerous explicit examples.

On the spectrum of the tridiagonal matrices with two-periodic main diagonal

We find the spectrum and eigenvectors of an arbitrary irreducible complex tridiagonal matrix with two-periodic main diagonal provided that the spectrum and eigenvectors of the matrix with the same sub- and superdiagonals and zero main diagonal is known. Our result substantially generalises some recent results on the Sylvester-Kac matrix and its certain main principal submatrices.

Ratios of the Gauss hypergeometric functions with parameters shifted by integers: more on integral representations

We consider the ratio of two Gauss hypergeometric functions, in which the parameters of the numerator function differ from the respective parameters of the denominator function by integers. We derive explicit integral representations for this ratio based on a formula for its imaginary part. This work extends our recent results by lifting certain restrictions on parameters. The new representations are illustrated with a few examples and an application to products of ratios.

Linear differential operators with polynomial coefficients generating generalised Sylvester-Kac matrices

A method of generating differential operators is used to solve the spectral problem for a generalisation of the Sylvester-Kac matrix. As a by-product, we find a linear differential operator with polynomial coefficients of the first order that has a finite sequence of polynomial eigenfunctions generalising the operator considered by M. Kac. In addition, we explain spectral properties of two related tridiagonal matrices whose shape differ from our generalisation.

Ratios of the Gauss hypergeometric functions with parameters shifted by integers: part I

We consider the ratio of two Gauss hypergeometric functions with real parameters shifted by arbitrary integers. We find a formula for the jump of this ratio over the branch cut in terms of a real hypergeometric polynomial, the beta density and the absolute value of the Gauss hypergeometric function. This allows us to construct explicit integral representations for such ratio when the asymptotic behaviour at unity is mild and the denominator does not vanish. Multiplying the ratio by the aforementioned polynomial, we obtain a function that belongs to a generalized Nevanlinna class for arbitrary values of real parameters. We give an in-depth analysis of a particular case known as the Gauss ratio. Furthermore, we establish a few general facts relating generalized Nevanlinna classes to Jacobi and Stieltjes continued fractions, as well as to factorization formulae for these classes. The results are illustrated with a large number of examples.

Coefficientwise total positivity of some matrices defined by linear recurrences

We exhibit a lower-triangular matrix of polynomials $T(a,c,d,e,f,g)$ in six indeterminates that appears empirically to be coefficientwise totally positive, and which includes as a special case the Eulerian triangle. We prove the coefficientwise total positivity of $T(a,c,0,e,0,0)$, which includes the reversed Stirling subset triangle.

On generalization of classical Hurwitz stability criteria for matrix polynomials

In this paper, we associate a class of Hurwitz matrix polynomials with Stieltjes positive definite matrix sequences. This connection leads to an extension of two classical criteria of Hurwitz stability for real polynomials to matrix polynomials: tests for Hurwitz stability via positive definiteness of block-Hankel matrices built from matricial Markov parameters and via matricial Stieltjes continued fractions. We obtain further conditions for Hurwitz stability in terms of block-Hankel minors and quasiminors, which may be viewed as a weak version of the total positivity criterion.

Discrete multiple orthogonal polynomials on shifted lattices

We introduce a new class of polynomials of multiple orthogonality with respect to the product of $r$ classical discrete weights on integer lattices with noninteger shifts. We give explicit representations in the form of the Rodrigues formulas. The case of two weights is described in detail.

Rigidity of the Hamburger and Stieltjes moment sequences

This paper aims at finding conditions on a Hamburger or Stieltjes moment sequence, under which the change of at most a finite number of its entries produces another sequence of the same type. It turns out that a moment sequence allows all small enough variations of this kind precisely when it is indeterminate. We also show that a determinate moment sequence has the finite index of determinacy if and only if the corresponding finite number of its entries can be changed in a certain way.

Hurwitz-type matrices of doubly infinite series

This paper show that two doubly infinite series generate a totally nonnegative Hurwitz-type matrix if and only if their ratio represents an S-functions of a certain kind. The doubly infinite case needs a specific approach, since the ratios have no correspondent Stieltjes continued fraction. Another forthcoming publication (see Dyachenko, arXiv:1608.04440) offers a shorter improved version of this result as well as its application to the Hurwitz stability. Nevertheless, the proof presented here illustrates features of totally nonnegative Hurwitz-type matrices better.

Hurwitz matrices of doubly infinite series

This paper aims at extending the criterion that the quasi-stability of a polynomial is equivalent to the total nonnegativity of its Hurwitz matrix. We give a complete description of functions generating doubly infinite series with totally nonnegative Hurwitz and Hurwitz-type matrices (in a Hurwitz-type matrix odd and even rows come from two distinct power series). The corresponding result for singly infinite series is known: it is based on a certain factorization of Hurwitz-type matrices, which is absent in the doubly infinite case. A necessary condition for total nonnegativity of generalized Hurwitz matrices follows as an application.

Functions of classes $\mathcal N_\varkappa^+$

In the present note we give an elementary proof of the necessary and sufficient condition for a univariate function to belong the class $\mathcal N_\varkappa^+$. This class was introduced mainly to deal with the indefinite version of the Stieltjes moment problem (and corresponding $π$-Hermitian operators), although it is applicable beyond the original scope. The proof relies on asymptotic analysis of the corresponding Hermitian forms. Our result closes a gap in the criterion given by Krein and Langer in their joint paper of 1977. The correct condition was stated by Langer and Winkler in 1998, although they provided no proper reasoning.

One helpful property of functions generating Pólya frequency sequences

In this work we study the solutions of the equation $z^pR(z^k)=α$ with nonzero complex $α$, integer $p,k$ and $R(z)$ generating a (possibly doubly infinite) totally positive sequence. It is shown that the zeros of $z^pR(z^k)-α$ are simple (or at most double in the case of real $α^k$) and split evenly among the sectors $\{\frac jk π\le\operatorname{Arg} z\le\frac {j+1}k π\}$, $j=0,\dots, 2k-1$. Our approach rests on the fact that $z(\ln z^{p/k}R(z) )'$ is an $\mathcal R$-function (i.e. maps the upper half of the complex plane into itself). This result guarantees the same localization to zeros of entire functions $f(z^k)+z^p g(z^k)$ and $g(z^k)+z^{p}f(z^k)$ provided that $f(z)$ and $g(-z)$ have genus $0$ and only negative zeros. As an application, we deduce that functions of the form $\sum_{n=0}^\infty (\pm i)^{n(n-1)/2}a_n z^{n}$ have simple zeros distinct in absolute value under a certain condition on the coefficients $a_n\ge 0$. This includes the "disturbed exponential" function corresponding to $a_n= q^{n(n-1)/2}/n!$ when $0<q\le 1$, as well as the partial theta function corresponding to $a_n= q^{n(n-1)/2}$ when $0<q\le q_*\approx 0.7457224107$.

On conjectures by Csordas, Charalambides and Waleffe

In the present note we obtain new results on two conjectures by Csordas et al. regarding the interlacing property of zeros of special polynomials. These polynomials came from the Jacobi tau methods for the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem. Their coefficients are the successive even derivatives of the Jacobi polynomials $P_n(x;α,β)$ evaluated at the point one. The first conjecture states that the polynomials constructed from $P_n(x;α,β)$ and $P_{n-1}(x;α,β)$ are interlacing when $-1<α<1$ and $-1<β$. We prove it in a range of parameters wider than that given earlier by Charalambides and Waleffe. We also show that within narrower bounds another conjecture holds. It asserts that the polynomials constructed from $P_n(x;α,β)$ and $P_{n-2}(x;α,β)$ are also interlacing.

On certain class of entire functions and a conjecture by Alan Sokal

In this paper we determine a class of entire functions using conditions on their odd and even parts. Further it is shown that the zeros of members of this class are localized in a very special way. This result allows us to treat a particular case of a conjecture by A. Sokal.

Total nonnegativity of infinite Hurwitz matrices of entire and meromorphic functions

In this paper we fully describe functions generating the infinite totally nonnegative Hurwitz matrices. In particular, we generalize the well-known result by Asner and Kemperman on the total nonnegativity of the Hurwitz matrices of real stable polynomials. An alternative criterion for entire functions to generate a Pólya frequency sequence is also obtained. The results are based on a connection between a factorization of totally nonnegative matrices of the Hurwitz type and the expansion of Stieltjes meromorphic functions into Stieltjes continued fractions (regular $C$-fractions with positive coefficients).
