A Riemann-Hilbert representation for Sobolev orthogonal polynomials

In this article we consider polynomials orthogonal with respect to the inner product $$\langle P,Q \rangle_S = \int_{\mathbb{R}}P(x)Q(x) \mathrm{e}^{-V(x)} \, \mathrm{d}x + \lambda\int_{\mathbb{R}}P^\prime(x)Q^\prime(x) \mathrm{e}^{-V(x)} \, \mathrm{d}x$$ where $V$ is a polynomial of even degree (at least four) and positive leading coefficient, and $\lambda > 0$ a constant. The above inner product is a special case of the so-called Sobolev inner product. We show how one can represent the associated Sobolev orthogonal polynomials as a species of Type I multiple-orthogonal polynomial. This correspondence makes use of the WKB asymptotics of a certain second order ODE. From this we may write a Riemann--Hilbert problem for the Sobolev orthogonal polynomials, from which one can deduce a Christoffel--Darboux-type formula for the projection kernel.

Large deviations of the periodic Toda chain

This work establishes a large deviation principle for the spectral measure of the Lax matrix associated to the periodic Toda chain of $N$ particles, subject to a generalised Gibbs measure. This large deviation principle is governed by a rate function which can be regarded as a generalisation of the free energy of the system. Such a large deviation principle is proven both for the model when the momentum is constrained to be zero and when it is allowed to fluctuate. Moreover, the large deviation principle is proven directly at the level of the representation of the generalised Gibbs partition function given in terms of the variables realising the classical separation of variables, \textit{i.e.} rectifying the equations of motion. As such, this work paves the way towards the computation of the thermodynamic limit of dynamical correlation functions in the Toda chain subject to generalised Gibbs ensemble statistics.

Asymptotic expansion of the partition function for $\beta$-ensembles with complex potentials

In this work we establish under certain hypotheses the $N \to +\infty$ asymptotic expansion of integrals of the form $$\mathcal{Z}_{N,\Gamma}[V] \, = \, \int_{\Gamma^N} \prod_{ a < b}^{N}(z_a - z_b)^\beta \, \prod_{k=1}^{N} \mathrm{e}^{ - N \beta V(z_k) } \, \mathrm{d}\mathbf{z}$$ where $V \in \mathbb{C}[X]$, $\beta \in 2 \mathbb{N}^*$ is an even integer and $\Gamma \subset \mathbb{C}$ is an unbounded contour such that the integral converges. For even degree, real valued $V$s and when $\Gamma = \mathbb{R}$, it is well known that the large-$N$ expansion is characterised by an equilibrium measure corresponding to the minimiser of an appropriate energy functional. This method bears a structural resemblance with the Laplace method. By contrast, in the complex valued setting we are considering, the analysis structurally resembles the classical steepest-descent method, and involves finding a critical point \textit{and} a steepest descent curve, the latter being a deformation of the original integration contour. More precisely, one minimises a curve-dependent energy functional with respect to measures on the curve and then maximises the energy over an appropriate space of curves. Our analysis deals with the one-cut regime of the associated equilibrium measure. We establish the existence of an all order asymptotic expansion for $\ln \mathcal{Z}_{N,\Gamma}[V]$ and explicitly identify the first few terms.

A Riemann-Hilbert Approach to Skew-Orthogonal Polynomials of Symplectic Type

We present a representation of skew-orthogonal polynomials of symplectic type ($\beta=4$) in terms of a matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem, for weights of the form ${\rm e}^{-V(z)}$ where $V$ is a polynomial of even degree and positive leading coefficient. This is done by representing skew-orthogonality as a kind of multiple-orthogonality. From this, we derive a $\beta=4$ analogue of the Christoffel-Darboux formula. Finally, our Riemann-Hilbert representation allows us to derive a Lax pair whose compatibility condition may be viewed as a $\beta=4$ analogue of the Toda lattice.

The complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble at weak non-Hermiticity: bulk spacing distributions

We show that the distribution of bulk spacings between pairs of adjacent eigenvalue real parts of a random matrix drawn from the complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble is asymptotically given by a generalization of the Gaudin-Mehta distribution, in the limit of weak non-Hermiticity. The same generalization is expressed in terms of an integro-differential Painlev\'e function and it is shown that the generalized Gaudin-Mehta distribution describes the crossover, with increasing degree of non-Hermiticity, from Gaudin-Mehta nearest-neighbor bulk statistics in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble to Poisson gap statistics for eigenvalue real parts in the bulk of the Complex Ginibre Ensemble.

The complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble at weak non-Hermiticity: edge spacing distributions

The focus of this paper is on the distribution function of the rightmost eigenvalue for the complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble in the limit of weak non-Hermiticity. We show how the limiting distribution function can be expressed in terms of an integro-differential Painlev\'e-II function and how the same captures the non-trivial transition between Poisson and Airy point process extreme value statistics as the degree of non-Hermiticity decreases. Our most explicit new results concern the tail asymptotics of the limiting distribution function. For the right tail we compute the leading order asymptotics uniformly in the degree of non-Hermiticity, for the left tail we compute it close to Hermiticity.

On the number of real eigenvalues of a product of truncated orthogonal random matrices

Let $O$ be chosen uniformly at random from the group of $(N+L) \times (N+L)$ orthogonal matrices. Denote by $\tilde{O}$ the upper-left $N \times N$ corner of $O$, which we refer to as a truncation of $O$. In this paper we prove two conjectures of Forrester, Ipsen and Kumar (2020) on the number of real eigenvalues $N^{(m)}_{\mathbb{R}}$ of the product matrix $\tilde{O}_{1}\ldots \tilde{O}_{m}$, where the matrices $\{\tilde{O}_{j}\}_{j=1}^{m}$ are independent copies of $\tilde{O}$. When $L$ grows in proportion to $N$, we prove that $$ \mathbb{E}(N^{(m)}_{\mathbb{R}}) = \sqrt{\frac{2m L}{\pi}}\,\mathrm{arctanh}\left(\sqrt{\frac{N}{N+L}}\right) + O(1), \qquad N \to \infty. $$ We also prove the conjectured form of the limiting real eigenvalue distribution of the product matrix. Finally, we consider the opposite regime where $L$ is fixed with respect to $N$, known as the regime of weak non-orthogonality. In this case each matrix in the product is very close to an orthogonal matrix. We show that $\mathbb{E}(N^{(m)}_{\mathbb{R}}) \sim c_{L,m}\,\log(N)$ as $N \to \infty$ and compute the constant $c_{L,m}$ explicitly. These results generalise the known results in the one matrix case due to Khoruzhenko, Sommers and \.{Z}yczkowski (2010).
