Learning to Trace Seiberg Dualities

Dualities play an important role in establishing both microscopic and emergent phenomena in a wide range of physical systems. In practice, though, it can often be computationally challenging to establish when two systems are dual, even when all of the "rules of the game" are well-known. Said differently, when confronted with two systems, how can one efficiently establish that they are in fact dual? In this paper we use machine learning methods to address this question for Seiberg dualities of supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. Mathematically, this involves establishing mutations of quivers, which is in turn a variation on the theme of "learning to unknot". On the one hand, this leads us to a practical tool for establishing the computational complexity of different dualities. On the other hand, it also allows us to study how different network architectures learn how to trace Seiberg dualities. We find that for quivers with a modest number of quiver nodes (of order $10$), different network architectures consisting of transformers and multi-layer perceptrons tend to outperform deterministic algorithms. Supplementing the network by well-established pathfinder algorithms (essentially "Google Maps for quivers") leads to an additional improvement in the efficiency and accuracy of the search strategy. We anticipate that this class of questions can serve as a useful benchmark for frontier AI models applied to theoretical physics.

Exploring Line Bundle Standard Models with Transformers

We propose a Transformer-based Reinforcement Learning architecture, "LB-Explorer", to search for heterotic line bundle standard models arising from compactifications on smooth Calabi-Yau (CY) threefolds. We focus on $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic string theory compactifications on CY with abelian line bundles to produce $\text{SU}(5)\times \text{S}(\text{U}(1)^5)$ symmetry, whose $\text{SU}(5)$ can be further broken to an MSSM-like gauge group using appropriate discrete Wilson lines. We test the LB-Explorer environment on complete intersection Calabi-Yau (CICY) manifolds, though the neural network architecture naturally generalizes to any CY admitting a simplicial Mori cone and a freely-acting discrete symmetry. The LB-Explorer efficiently learns constraints on the line bundle sums, guaranteeing the $E_8$ gauge embedding, anomaly cancellation, poly-stability (supersymmetry), chirality of the spectrum, and the absence of exotic matter. Valid configurations can be subsequently filtered by imposing the missing constraints, such as the equivariant structure of the line bundle sum and further requirements on the particle spectrum. In this direction, we introduce a hybrid architecture incorporating CP-SAT solvers that aims to impose some of the conditions exactly by perturbing solutions found by the LB-Explorer. The versatility and scalability of the LB-Explorer make it a powerful tool for navigating the string landscape with a large number of moduli. The code and tools necessary to reproduce our findings are available at https://github.com/alexmininno/LB-Explorer

Expanding the Weak Gravity Conjecture in AdS Space

In this work, we investigate the extension of our recent proposal for the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) in AdS space to more general effective field theories. We first extend the conjecture to set-ups where moduli are present and we demand that a particle, produced during the decay of an extremal black hole via the Schwinger effect, is repelled close to the horizon of the black hole. We interpret this condition as the universal criterion imposed by the WGC for any background. Interestingly, the constraint imposed by the WGC on the particle spectrum, before the stabilization of the moduli, is independent of the background, resulting in the same bound both in Minkowski and in AdS space. For the case of AdS space, after the stabilization of the moduli, the WGC in AdS space is reproduced due to the formation of a non-singular horizon of the extremal black hole. In that case, the particle spectrum must satisfy the stronger of the two WGC conditions obtained before and after moduli stabilization. Finally, we use these results to argue that a similar version of the tower WGC should also apply to an AdS background.

From Regular to Irregular: A Unified Origin for Argyres-Douglas Theories

We propose that Argyres-Douglas theories of type $D_p(\mathrm{SU}(N))$ and $(A_{p-1}, A_{N-1})$ - both realizable as Type A class $\mathcal{S}$ theories with irregular punctures - can be obtained via a sequence of mass deformations from a common ancestor: a class $\mathcal{S}$ theory with only regular punctures. Building on our previous work, this result establishes that these theories ultimately originate from 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ orbi-instanton theories compactified on a torus. The requisite 4d mass deformations are realized as tractable Fayet-Iliopoulos deformations on the 3d mirror quiver. The core of our method is a constructive procedure that utilizes the Euclidean algorithm to define a chain of deformations connecting different $D_p(\mathrm{SU}(N))$ theories. By reversing this chain, we recursively build a "parent" star-shaped quiver for any given $(N,p)$. This quiver is the 3d mirror theory of the required class $\mathcal{S}$ ancestor. We substantiate our general claims with several detailed examples that explicitly illustrate the deformation procedure.

Discrete Gauging of 6d SCFTs and Wreathed 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ Quivers

We study the Higgs branch moduli space of certain 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs after gauging their $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Green-Schwarz automorphism. We explain how to read the flavor symmetry of such SCFTs directly from the 6d construction, and we confirm the expectation by computing the Coulomb branch Hilbert series of their $\mathbb{Z}_2$-wreathed 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ magnetic quiver. To perform the latter computation, we explicitly introduce a methodology to determine such Hilbert series for $\mathbb{Z}_2$-wreathed orthosymplectic quivers.

Formulating the Weak Gravity Conjecture in AdS Space

We propose a version of the Weak Gravity Conjecture that applies to AdS spacetime. We find that the condition on the charge-to-mass ratio of a charged particle in AdS$_D$ spacetime is corrected compared to the one in Minkowski spacetime by contributions that depends on the AdS scale and the horizon radius of the extremal Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole charged under the same gauge theory. It is maximized when we consider the largest possible extremal black hole in AdS. We motivate our proposal from the viewpoint of extremal black hole decay and show that the bound on the particle spectrum is given by the critical charge-to-mass ratio beyond which the Schwinger effect can take place. This quantum effect shares the same condition as requiring a particle to satisfy a repulsive force condition at the black hole horizon, so that the extremal black hole can decay without reabsorbing the particle. We discuss the relation of our proposed weak gravity bound with the near-horizon Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. We also comment on the generalization in the case of multiple U(1) gauge theories, providing evidence for a convex hull condition in AdS background.

All Class $\mathcal{S}$ Theories of Type-$A$ Originate from Orbi-instantons

A surprising relation between 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ class $\mathcal{S}$ superconformal field theories of Type-$A$ and 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ orbi-instanton theories is investigated. We find that all of the theories in the former class can be obtained by a series of deformations of the 4d theories arising from compactifying the latter on a torus. This is demonstrated by examining Fayet--Iliopoulos (FI) deformations of the $E_8$-shaped magnetic quivers of the orbi-instanton theories whose body fits into the affine $E_8$ Dynkin diagram with a tail attached. Turning on FI parameters at the appropriate gauge groups leads, in stages, to $E_7$-shaped, $E_6$-shaped, and general star-shaped quivers, where the latter are magnetic quivers for the class $\mathcal{S}$ theory of Type-$A$ on a sphere with punctures. Deforming a suitable star-shaped quiver, one obtains a magnetic quiver of the Type-$A$ class $\mathcal{S}$ theory with general genus and an arbitrary number of punctures. Given such a theory, we also propose the inverse algorithm, thereby determining a parent orbi-instanton theory. This is achieved by uplifting the corresponding magnetic quiver step by step to the star-shaped, $E_6$-shaped, $E_7$-shaped, and $E_8$-shaped quivers, where at each step all of the underbalanced nodes, possessing non-zero FI parameters, are dualized. The latter $E_8$-shaped quiver then characterizes the 6d orbi-instanton theory from which the class $\mathcal{S}$ theory in question originates.

Discrete Global Symmetries: Gauging and Twisted Compactification

Discrete global symmetries of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs are studied via two operations: gauging and twisted compactification. We consider gauging of discrete symmetries in several well-known 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs, including $\mathrm{SU}(n)$ SQCD with $2n$ flavors, theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ of type $A_{2n-1}$, and Argyres--Douglas theories of type $(A_N, A_N)$, as well as propose new 4d SCFTs as a result. The wreathing technique, which involves gauging a subgroup of the automorphism group of the quiver diagram of the corresponding 3d mirror theory, is exploited. This allows us to understand several properties of discretely gauged theories, including moduli spaces and how discrete gauging affects the mixed 't Hooft anomaly between the 1-form symmetry and the 0-form flavor symmetry. Many examples are viewed through the lens of the Argyres--Seiberg duality and its generalization. We also examine discrete gauging of $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ SQCD with 4 flavors by various $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ subgroups of the permutation group $S_4$ using the superconformal index. Regarding compactification, we propose a magnetic quiver for 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $\mathrm{SU}(n)$ SQCD with $2n$ flavors compactified on a circle with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ twist. The twisted compactification by non-invertible symmetries of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory with gauge group $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ is revisited. The non-invertible symmetry naturally gives rise to a $\mathbb{Z}_k$ action on the scalar fields parametrizing the moduli space. Upon examining the $\mathbb{Z}_k$ invariant chiral ring of the Higgs branch, we find that, in addition to the largest branch of the moduli space that is expected to be captured by the ABJ(M) theory, there exist in general nilpotent operators that lead to a branch of the moduli space which is a radical ideal.

The Minimal Weak Gravity Conjecture

We examine the minimal constraints imposed by the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) on the particle spectrum of a quantum gravity theory. Towers of super-extremal states have previously been argued to be required for consistency of the WGC under circle reduction. At the same time, there exist classes of theories where no tower of super-extremal particle states below the black hole threshold has been established with current techniques. We resolve this tension by arguing for the existence of a minimal radius for circle reductions of generic quantum gravity theories. Below this threshold, the notion of a circle compactification breaks down, bypassing the need for a tower of super-extremal states to satisfy the WGC after circle reduction. Based on this we propose that if a theory satisfies the WGC at the particle level below the black hole threshold, these states are sufficient for consistency under dimensional reduction, even in absence of a tower of super-extremal particles. Apart from general arguments, we provide independent evidence for this main result in F-, M- and string theory compactifications. According to the Emergent String Conjecture the only exception to the appearance of a minimal radius arises in asymptotically weak-coupling limits for heterotic strings, which aligns with the appearance of a weakly coupled super-extremal tower of particle states. This observation motivates a Minimal Weak Gravity Conjecture which states that towers of super-extremal particles occur if and only if they are required by consistency of the WGC under dimensional reduction.

Comments on Non-invertible Symmetries in Argyres-Douglas Theories

We demonstrate the presence of non-invertible symmetries in an infinite family of superconformal Argyres-Douglas theories. This class of theories arises from diagonal gauging of the flavor symmetry of a collection of multiple copies of $D_p(\mathrm{SU}(N))$ theories. The same set of theories that we study can also be realized from 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ compactification on a torus. The main example in this class is the $(A_2, D_4)$ theory. We show in detail that this specific theory bears the same structures of non-invertible duality and triality defects as those of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{su}(2)$. We extend this result to infinitely many other Argyres-Douglas theories in the same family, including those with central charges $a=c$ whose conformal manifold is one dimensional, and those with $a\neq c$ whose conformal manifold has dimension larger than one. Our result is supported by examining certain special cases that can be realized in terms of theories of class $\mathcal{S}$.

The Asymptotic Weak Gravity Conjecture in M-theory

The tower Weak Gravity Conjecture predicts infinitely many super-extremal states along every ray in the charge lattice of a consistent quantum gravity theory. We show this far-reaching claim in five-dimensional compactifications of M-theory on Calabi--Yau 3-folds for gauge groups with a weak coupling limit. We first characterize the possible weak coupling limits, building on an earlier classification of infinite distance limits in the K\"ahler moduli space of M-theory compactifications. We find that weakly coupled gauge groups are associated to curves on the compactification space contained in generic fibers or in fibers degenerating at finite distance in their moduli space. These always admit an interpretation as a Kaluza--Klein or winding U$(1)$ in a dual frame or as part of a dual perturbative heterotic gauge group, in agreement with the Emergent String Conjecture. Using the connection between Donaldson--Thomas invariants and Noether--Lefschetz theory, we then show that every ray in the associated charge lattice either supports a tower of BPS states or of non-BPS states, and prove that these satisfy the super-extremality condition, at least in the weak coupling regime.

A tale of 2-groups: D$_p$(USp(2N)) theories

A 1-form symmetry and a 0-form symmetry may combine to form an extension known as the 2-group symmetry. We find the presence of the latter in a class of Argyres-Douglas theories, called $D_p($USp$(2N))$, which can be realized by $\mathbb{Z}_2$-twisted compactification of the 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ of the $D$-type on a sphere with an irregular twisted puncture and a regular twisted full puncture. We propose the $3$d mirror theories of general $D_p($USp$(2N))$ theories that serve as an important tool to study their flavor symmetry and Higgs branch. Yet another important result is presented: We elucidate a technique, dubbed ''bootstrap'', which generates an infinite family of $D^b_p(G)$ theories, where for a given arbitrary group $G$ and a parameter $b$, each theory in the same family has the same number of mass parameters, same number of marginal deformations, same $1$-form symmetry, and same $2$-group structure. This technique is utilized to establish the presence or absence of the 2-group symmetries in several classes of $D^b_p(G)$ theories. In this regard, we find that the $D_p($USp$(2N))$ theories constitute a special class of Argyres-Douglas theories that have a 2-group symmetry.

The Asymptotic Weak Gravity Conjecture for Open Strings

We investigate the asymptotic Tower Weak Gravity Conjecture in weak coupling limits of open string theories with minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions, focusing for definiteness on gauge theories realized on 7-branes in F-theory. Contrary to expectations, we find that not all weak coupling limits contain an obvious candidate for a tower of states marginally satisfying the super-extremality bound. The weak coupling limits are classified geometrically in the framework of EFT string limits and their generalizations. We find three different classes of weak coupling limits, whose physics is characterized by the ratio of the magnetic weak gravity scale and the species scale. The four-dimensional Tower Weak Gravity Conjecture is satisfied by the (non-BPS) excitations of the weakly coupled EFT string only in emergent string limits, where the EFT string can be identified with a critical (heterotic) string. All other weak coupling limits lead to a decompactification either to an in general strongly coupled gauge theory coupled to gravity or to a defect gauge theory decoupling from the gravitational bulk, in agreement with the absence of an obvious candidate for a marginally super-extremal tower of states.

Dynamical consequences of 1-form symmetries and the exceptional Argyres-Douglas theories

Higher-form symmetries have proved useful in constraining the dynamics of a number of quantum field theories. In the context of the Argyres-Douglas (AD) theories of the $(G,G')$ type, we find that the 1-form symmetries are invariant under the Higgs branch flow, and that they are captured by the non-Higgsable sector at a generic point on the Higgs branch of the AD theory in question. As a consequence, dimensional reduction of an AD theory with a non-trivial 1-form symmetry to 3d leads to a free sector. We utilize these observations, along with other results, to propose systematically the mirror theories for the AD theories of the $(A_n, E_m)$ type. As a by-product of these findings, we discover many important results: the Flip-Flip duality for all $T[G]$ theories with simply-laced group $G$, including the exceptional ones; the class $\mathcal{S}$ descriptions of exceptional affine Dynkin diagram such that all gauge groups are special unitary; the universality of the mirror theories for $D_{h^\vee_G}(G)$ with $h^\vee_G$ the dual Coxeter number of $G$; and the triviality of the 2-group structure in the $(A_n, E_m)$ theories.

Systematics of perturbatively flat flux vacua for CICYs

In this paper, we extend the analysis of scanning the perturbatively flat flux vacua (PFFV) for the type IIB orientifold compactifications on the mirror of the projective complete intersection Calabi-Yau (pCICY) 3-folds, which are realized as hypersurfaces in the product of complex projective spaces. We present the PFFV statistics for all the 36 pCICYs with $h^{1,1}=2$ and classify them into two categories of being K3-fibered model and non K3-fibered model. We find that all the K3-fibered models have a significantly large number of PFFV leading to physical vacua by fixing the axio-dilaton by non-perturbative effects, while only a couple of non K3-fibered models have such physical vacua. We have found that there are five pCICY $3$-folds with the suitable exchange symmetry leading to the so-called exponentially flat flux vacua (EFFV) which are protected against non-perturbative prepotential effects as well. Finally we explored the underlying exchange symmetries in the favorable dataset of 7820 pCICYs and have found that there are only 15 spaces which can result in EFFV configurations.

Divisor topologies of CICY 3-folds and their applications to phenomenology

In this article, we present a classification for the divisor topologies of the projective complete intersection Calabi-Yau (pCICY) 3-folds realized as hypersurfaces in the product of complex projective spaces. There are 7890 such pCICYs of which 7820 are favorable, and can be subsequently useful for phenomenological purposes. To our surprise we find that the whole pCICY database results in only 11 (so-called coordinate) divisors $(D)$ of distinct topology and we classify those surfaces with their possible deformations inside the pCICY 3-fold, which turn out to be satisfying $1 \leq h^{2,0}(D) \leq 7$. We also present a classification of the so-called ample divisors for all the favorable pCICYs which can be useful for fixing all the (saxionic) K\"ahler moduli through a single non-perturbative term in the superpotential. We argue that this relatively unexplored pCICY dataset equipped with the necessary model building ingredients, can be used for a systematic search of physical vacua. To illustrate this for model building in the context of type IIB CY orientifold compactifications, we present moduli stabilization with some preliminary analysis of searching possible vacua in simple models, as a template to be adopted for analyzing models with a larger number of K\"ahler moduli.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ Superconformal Field Theories

Superconformal field theory with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry in four dimensional spacetime provides a prime playground to study strongly coupled phenomena in quantum field theory. Its rigid structure ensures valuable analytic control over non-perturbative effects, yet the theory is still flexible enough to incorporate a large landscape of quantum systems. Here we aim to offer a guidebook to fundamental features of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories and basic tools to construct them in string/M-/F-theory. The content is based on a series of lectures at the Quantum Field Theories and Geometry School (https://sites.google.com/view/qftandgeometrysummerschool/home) in July 2020.

Systematics of perturbatively flat flux vacua

In this article, we present a systematic analysis of the so-called perturbatively flat flux vacua (PFFV) for the mirror Calabi-Yau (CY) $3$-folds ($\tilde{X}_3$) with $h^{1,1}(\tilde{X}_3) =2$ arising from the Kreuzer-Skarke database of the four-dimensional reflexive polytopes. We consider the divisor topologies of the CY $3$-folds for classifying the subsequent models into three categories; (i) models with the so-called Swiss-cheese structure, (ii) models with the $K3$-fibered structure, and (iii) the remaining ones which we call as models of "Hybrid type". In our detailed analysis of PFFV we find that for a given fixed value of the D$3$ tadpole charge $N_{\text{flux}}$, the $K3$-fibered mirror CY $3$-folds have significantly larger number of such PFFV as compared to those which have Swiss-cheese structure, while the Hybrid type models have a mixed behavior. We also compute the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants necessary for fixing the flat valley in the weak string-coupling and large complex-structure regime by using the non-perturbative effects, which subsequently reduce the number of physically trustworthy vacua quite significantly. Moreover, we find that there are some examples in which the PFFV are protected even at the leading orders of the non-perturbative effects due to the some underlying symmetry in the CY geometry, which we call as "Exponentially flat flux vacua". We also present a new class of PFFV using the $\mathcal{S}$-duality arguments.
