ESASky : A Science-Driven Discovery Portal for Space-Based Astronomy Missions

In the era of "big data" and with the advent of web 2.0 technologies, ESASky (http://sky.esa.int) aims at providing a modern and visual way to access astronomical science-ready data products and metadata. The main goal of the application is to simplify the interaction between the scientific community and the ever-growing amount of data collected over the past decades from the most important astronomy missions. The ESASky concept is to offer a complementary scientific application to the more-traditional table-oriented exploitation of astronomical data, by allowing a more natural and visual approach and enabling the exploration of astronomical objects across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. To fulfill this goal, ESASky provides a multiwavelength interface to a set of astronomy data from an increasing number of missions and surveys, with the intention of becoming the single-point of entry to perform visual analysis and cross-matching among different energy ranges. A lot of effort has been invested on the design of a user-friendly, responsive Graphical User Interface (GUI) by the definition and optimisation of algorithms running behind each visual feature offered. In this contribution, we describe in detail the design and solutions adopted for the technical challenges arising during the development. We present the data services and features implemented in the latest version of ESASky (v2.1), including a Mission Planning Tool to support current James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) planning, the possibility to search for observations of Solar System Objects (planets, comets and moons) taken by astronomy missions, the integration of the SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS) publication system in the ESASky GUI, and the retrieval of metadata and data products available within a specific region of the sky.

The Grid[Way] Job Template Manager, a tool for parameter sweeping

Parameter sweeping is a widely used algorithmic technique in computational science. It is specially suited for high-throughput computing since the jobs evaluating the parameter space are loosely coupled or independent. A tool that integrates the modeling of a parameter study with the control of jobs in a distributed architecture is presented. The main task is to facilitate the creation and deletion of job templates, which are the elements describing the jobs to be run. Extra functionality relies upon the GridWay Metascheduler, acting as the middleware layer for job submission and control. It supports interesting features like multi-dimensional sweeping space, wildcarding of parameters, functional evaluation of ranges, value-skipping and job template automatic indexation. The use of this tool increases the reliability of the parameter sweep study thanks to the systematic bookkeping of job templates and respective job statuses. Furthermore, it simplifies the porting of the target application to the grid reducing the required amount of time and effort.

Grid porting of Bhabha scattering code through a master-worker scheme

A program calculating Bhabha scattering at high energy colliders is considered for porting to the EGEE Grid infrastructure. The program code, which is a result of the aITALC project, is ported by using a master-worker operating scheme. The job submission, execution and monitoring are implemented using the GridWay metascheduler. The unattended execution of jobs turned out to be complete and rather efficient, even when pre-knowledge of the grid is absent. While the batch of jobs remains organized at the user's side, the actual computation was carried out within the phenogrid virtual organization. The scientific results support the use of the small angle Bhabha scattering for the luminosity measurements of the International Linear Collider project.

Factorizable electroweak O(alpha) corrections for top quark pair production and decay at a linear e+e- collider

We calculate the standard model predictions for top quark pair production and decay into six fermions at a linear e+ e- collider. We include the factorizable electroweak O(alpha) corrections in the pole approximation and QED corrections due to the initial state radiation in the structure function approach. The effects of the radiative corrections on the predictions are illustrated by showing numerical results for two selected six-fermion reactions e+ e- -> b nu_mu mu+ bar{b} mu- bar{nu_mu} and e+ e- -> b nu_mu mu+ bar{b} d bar{u}.

An Integrated Tool for Loop Calculations: aITALC

aITALC, a new tool for automating loop calculations in high energy physics, is described. The package creates Fortran code for two-fermion scattering processes automatically, starting from the generation and analysis of the Feynman graphs. We describe the modules of the tool, the intercommunication between them and illustrate its use with three examples.

Towards high precision predictions for top quark pair production and decay at a linear collider

We report on the progress in work on improving precision of the standard model theoretical predictions for the top quark pair production and decay into six fermions at a linear collider. Two programs have been combined into a single Monte Carlo program: 'eett6f', a MC program for e+e- -> 6f, and 'topfit', a program for electroweak radiative corrections to e+e- -> t\bar t. The MC program is described and preliminary numerical results are shown.
