Entanglement dynamics and ergodicity breaking in a quantum cellular automaton

Ergodicity breaking is observed in the blockade regime of Rydberg atoms arrays, in the form of low entanglement eigenstates known as scars, which fail to thermalize. The signature of these states persists in periodically driven systems, where they coexist with an extensive number of chaotic states. Here we investigate a quantum cellular automaton based on the classical rule that updates a site if its two neighbors are in the lower state. We show that the breaking of ergodicity extends to chaotic states. The dynamical breaking of ergodicity is controlled by chiral quasiparticle excitations which propagate entanglement. Evidence of nonlocal entanglement is found, showing that these nonthermal chaotic states may be useful to quantum computation.

Dynamics of vortices and drift waves: a point vortex model

The complex interactions of localized vortices with waves is investigated using a model of point vortices in the presence of a transverse or longitudinal wave. This simple model shows a rich dynamical behavior including oscillations of a dipole, splitting and merging of two like-circulation vortices, and chaos. The analytical and numerical results of this model have been found to predict under certain conditions, the behavior of more complex systems, such as the vortices of the Charney-Hasegawa-Mima equation, where the presence of waves strongly affects the evolution of large coherent structures.

Magnetization structure of a Bloch point singularity

Switching of magnetic vortex cores involves a topological transition characterized by the presence of a magnetization singularity, a point where the magnetization vanishes (Bloch point). We analytically derive the shape of the Bloch point that is an extremum of the free energy with exchange, dipole and the Landau terms for the determination of the local value of the magnetization modulus.

Anisotropic dynamics of a vicinal surface under the meandering step instability

We investigate the nonlinear evolution of the Bales-Zangwill instability, responsible for the meandering of atomic steps on a growing vicinal surface. We develop an asymptotic method to derive, in the continuous limit, an evolution equation for the two-dimensional step flow. The dynamics of the crystal surface is greatly influenced by the anisotropy inherent to its geometry, and is characterized by the coarsening of undulations along the step direction and by the elastic relaxation in the mean slope direction. We demonstrate, using similarity arguments, that the coalescence of meanders and the step flow follow simple scaling laws, and deduce the exponents of the characteristic length scales and height amplitude. The relevance of these results to experiments is discussed.

Dynamics and ordering of the nucleationless island formation in heteroepitaxy

We study the morphological evolution of strained islands in growing crystal films by use of a continuum description including wetting, elasticity and deposition flux. Wetting breaks translational invariance, allowing the flux to tune different nonlinear regimes. Increasing the flux, we find first an annealing-like dynamics, then a slower but non-conventional ripening followed by a steady regime, while the island density continuously increases. The islands develop spatial correlations and ordering with a narrow two-peaked distance distribution and ridge-like clusters of islands for high flux.

Nonlinear evolution of a morphological instability in a strained epitaxial film

A strained epitaxial film deposited on a deformable substrate undergoes a morphological instability relaxing the elastic energy by surface diffusion. The nonlinear and nonlocal dynamical equations of such films with wetting interactions are derived and solved numerically in two and three dimensions. Above some critical thickness, the surface evolves towards an array of islands separated by a wetting layer. The island chemical potential decreases with its volume, so that the system experiences a non-interrupted coarsening described by power laws with a marked dimension dependence.

Nonlinear evolution of the step meandering instability of a growing crystal surface

The growth of crystal surfaces, under non-equilibrium conditions, involves the displacement of mono-atomic steps by atom diffusion and atom incorporations into steps. The time-evolution of the growing crystal surface is thus governed by a free boundary value problem [known as the Burton--Cabrera--Franck model]. In the presence of an asymmetry of the kinetic coefficients [Erlich--Schwoebel barriers], ruling the rates of incorporation of atoms at each step, it has been shown that a train of straight steps is unstable to two dimensional transverse perturbations. This instability is now known as the Bales-Zangwill instability (meandering instability). We study the non-linear evolution of the step meandering instability that occurs on a crystalline vicinal surface under growth, in the absence of evaporation, in the limit of a weak asymmetry of atom incorporation at the steps. We derive a nonlinear amplitude equation displaying spatiotemporal coarsening. We characterize the self-similar solutions of this equation.

Vortex sheet dynamics and turbulence

The nonlinear evolution of a vortex sheet driven by the Kelvin--Helmholtz instability is characterized by the formation of a spiral possessing complex stretching and intensity patterns. We show that the power energy spectrum of a single two-dimensional vortex sheet tends to the usual fluid turbulent spectrum, with an exponent of -3. Using numerical simulations and asymptotic methods, we demonstrate the relation between this power law and the singularities in the geometry and vorticity distribution of the sheet.

Effect of step stiffness and diffusion anisotropy on the meandering of a growing vicinal surface

We study the step meandering instability on a surface characterized by the alternation of terraces with different properties, as in the case of Si(001). The interplay between diffusion anisotropy and step stiffness induces a finite wavelength instability corresponding to a meandering mode. The instability sets in beyond a threshold value which depends on the relative magnitudes of the destabilizing flux and the stabilizing stiffness difference. The meander dynamics is governed by the conserved Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, which display spatiotemporal coarsening.
