Geometrothermodynamic description of magnetic materials

We perform a statistical and geometrothermodynamic analysis of three different models of magnetic materials, namely, the translational free model, the spin model, and the mean-field model. First, we derive the fundamental equation for each model, which is then used as input to compute the metrics of the corresponding equilibrium spaces. Analyzing the corresponding geometrothermodynamic curvatures, we conclude that they can be used to describe thermodynamic interaction, stability conditions, and the phase transition structure of the modeled substances. In all the cases, we reproduce their well-known behavior close to the Curie temperature. Moreover, in the case of the model with spin, we found a curvature singularity which corresponds to a novel transition, where a particular response function diverges, indicating the presence of a second order phase transition, according to Ehrenfest classification.

Geometrothermodynamics of van der Waals systems

We explore the properties of the equilibrium space of van der Waals thermodynamic systems. We use an invariant representation of the fundamental equation by using the law of corresponding states, which allows us to perform a general analysis for all possible van der Waals systems. The investigation of the equilibrium space is performed by using the Legendre invariant formalism of geometrothermodynamics, which guarantees the independence of the results from the choice of thermodynamic potential. We find all the curvature singularities of the equilibrium space that correspond to first and second order phase transitions. We compare our results with those obtained by using Hessian metrics for the equilibrium space. We conclude that the formalism of geometrothermodynamics allows us to determine the complete phase transition structure of systems with two thermodynamic degrees of freedom.

Geometrothermodynamics of black hole binary systems

We study a stationary and axisymmetric binary system composed of two identical Kerr black holes, whose physical parameters satisfy the Smarr thermodynamic formula. Then, we use the formalism of geometrothermodynamics to show that the spatial distance between the black holes must be considered as a thermodynamic variable. We investigate the main thermodynamic properties of the system by using the contact structure of the phase space, which generates the first law of thermodynamics and the equilibrium conditions. The phase transition structure of the system is investigated through the curvature singularities of the equilibrium space. It is shown that the thermodynamic and stability properties and the phase transition structure of the binary system strongly depend on the distance between the black holes.

Quasi-homogeneous black hole thermodynamics

Although the fundamental equations of ordinary thermodynamic systems are known to correspond to first-degree homogeneous functions, in the case of non-ordinary systems like black holes the corresponding fundamental equations are not homogeneous. We present several arguments, indicating that black holes should be described by means of quasi-homogeneous functions of degree different from one. In particular, we show that imposing the first-degree condition leads to contradictory results in thermodynamics and geometrothermodynamics of black holes. As a consequence, we show that in generalized gravity theories the coupling constants like the cosmological constant, the Born-Infeld parameter or the Gauss-Bonnet constant must be considered as thermodynamic variables.

On the physical significance of geometrothermodynamic metrics

In geometrothermodynamics (GTD), to study the geometric properties of the equilibrium space three thermodynamic metrics have been proposed so far. These metrics are obtained by using the condition of Legendre invariance and can be computed explicitly once a thermodynamic potential is specified as the fundamental equation. We use the remaining diffeomorphism invariance in the phase and equilibrium spaces to show that the components of the GTD-metrics can be interpreted as the second moment of the fluctuation of a new thermodynamic potential. This result establishes a direct connection between GTD and fluctuation theory. In this way, the diffeomorphism invariance of GTD allows us to introduce new thermodynamic coordinates and new thermodynamic potentials, which are not related by means of Legendre transformations to the fundamental thermodynamic potentials.

Geometrothermodynamics of black holes in Lorentz non-invariant massive gravity

We analyze a static and spherically symmetric hairy black hole solution in non-invariant massive gravity. The formalism of geometrothermodynamics is used to describe the thermodynamic characteristics of this black hole in a Legendre invariant way. For a black hole in massive gravity, the geometry of the space of equilibrium states is computed showing that it contains information about the thermodynamic interaction, critical points and phase transitions structure.

On the ensemble dependence in black hole geometrothermodynamics

We investigate the dependence of thermodynamic properties of black holes on the choice of statistical ensemble for a particular class of Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet black holes with cosmological constant. We use partial Legendre transformations in the thermodynamic limit in order to compare the results in different ensembles, and show that the phase transition structure depend on the choice of thermodynamic potential. This result implies that thermodynamic metrics which are partially Legendre invariant cannot be employed to describe black hole thermodynamics, and partly explains why a particular thermodynamic metric has been used so far in the framework of black hole geometrothermodynamics.

Geometrothermodynamics of five dimensional black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-theory

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of 5D static and spherically symmetric black holes in (i) Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet theory, (ii) Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet theory with negative cosmological constant, and in (iii) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Gauss-Bonnet theory. To formulate the thermodynamics of these black holes we use the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy relation and, alternatively, a modified entropy formula which follows from the first law of thermodynamics of black holes. The results of both approaches are not equivalent. Using the formalism of geometrothermodynamics, we introduce in the manifold of equilibrium states a Legendre invariant metric for each black hole and for each thermodynamic approach, and show that the thermodynamic curvature diverges at those points where the temperature vanishes and the heat capacity diverges.

Geometrothermodynamics in Horava-Lifshitz gravity

We investigate the thermodynamic geometries of the most general static, spherically symmetric, topological black holes of the Ho\v{r}ava--Lifshitz gravity. In particular, we show that a Legendre invariant metric derived in the context of geometrothermodynamics for the equilibrium manifold reproduces correctly the phase transition structure of these black holes. Moreover, the limiting cases in which the mass, the entropy or the Hawking temperature vanish are also accompanied by curvature singularities which indicate the limit of applicability of the thermodynamics and the geometrothermodynamics of black holes. The Einstein limit and the case of a black hole with flat horizon are also investigated.

Thermodynamic systems as extremal hypersurfaces

We apply variational principles in the context of geometrothermodynamics. The thermodynamic phase space ${\cal T}$ and the space of equilibrium states ${\cal E}$ turn out to be described by Riemannian metrics which are invariant with respect to Legendre transformations and satisfy the differential equations following from the variation of a Nambu-Goto-like action. This implies that the volume element of ${\cal E}$ is an extremal and that ${\cal E}$ and ${\cal T}$ are related by an embedding harmonic map. We explore the physical meaning of geodesic curves in ${\cal E}$ as describing quasi-static processes that connect different equilibrium states. We present a Legendre invariant metric which is flat (curved) in the case of an ideal (van der Waals) gas and satisfies Nambu-Goto equations. The method is used to derive some new solutions which could represent particular thermodynamic systems.

Curvature as a Measure of the Thermodynamic Interaction

We present a systematic and consistent construction of geometrothermodynamics by using Riemannian contact geometry for the phase manifold and harmonic maps for the equilibrium manifold. We present several metrics for the phase manifold that are invariant with respect to Legendre transformations and induce thermodynamic metrics on the equilibrium manifold. We review all the known examples in which the curvature of the thermodynamic metrics can be used as a measure of the thermodynamic interaction.

Geometrothermodynamics of black holes in two dimensions

We study the properties of two-dimensional dilatonic black holes from the viewpoint of geometrothermodynamics. We show that the thermodynamic curvature of the equilibrium space vanishes only in the case of a flat spacetime, and it reproduces correctly the behavior of the thermodynamic interaction and phase transition structure of the corresponding black hole configurations.

Geometric description of BTZ black holes thermodynamics

We study the properties of the space of thermodynamic equilibrium states of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole in (2+1)-gravity. We use the formalism of geometrothermodynamics to introduce in the space of equilibrium states a $2-$dimensional thermodynamic metric whose curvature is non-vanishing, indicating the presence of thermodynamic interaction, and free of singularities, indicating the absence of phase transitions. Similar results are obtained for generalizations of the BTZ black hole which include a Chern-Simons term and a dilatonic field. Small logarithmic corrections of the entropy turn out to be represented by small corrections of the thermodynamic curvature, reinforcing the idea that thermodynamic curvature is a measure of thermodynamic interaction.

Relativisticlike structure of classical thermodynamics

We analyze in the context of geometrothermodynamics a Legendre invariant metric structure in the equilibrium space of an ideal gas. We introduce the concept of thermodynamic geodesic as a succession of points, each corresponding to a state of equilibrium, so that the resulting curve represents a quasi-static process. A rigorous geometric structure is derived in which the thermodynamic geodesics at a given point split the equilibrium space into two disconnected regions separated by adiabatic geodesics. This resembles the causal structure of special relativity, which we use to introduce the concept of adiabatic cone for thermodynamic systems. This result might be interpreted as an alternative indication of the inter-relationship between relativistic physics and classical thermodynamics.

Geometrothermodynamics of asymptotically anti - de Sitter black holes

We apply the formalism of geometrothermodynamics to the case of black holes with cosmological constant in four and higher dimensions. We use a thermodynamic metric which is invariant with respect to Legendre transformations and determines the geometry of the space of equilibrium states. For all known black holes in higher dimensions, we show that the curvature scalar of the thermodynamic metric in all the cases is proportional to the heat capacity. As a consequence, phase transitions, which correspond to divergencies of the heat capacity, are represented geometrically as true curvature singularities. We interpret this as a further indication that the curvature of the thermodynamic metric is a measure of thermodynamic interaction.

On the local Lorentz invariance in N=1 supergravity

We discuss the local Lorentz invariance in the context of N=1 supergravity and show that a previous attempt to find explicit solutions to the Lorentz constraint in terms of $\gamma-$matrices is not correct. We improve that solution by using a different representation of the Lorentz operators in terms of the generators of the rotation group, and show its compatibility with the matrix representation of the fermionic field. We find the most general wave functional that satisfies the Lorentz constraint in this representation.

Gowdy $T^3$ Cosmological Models in N=1 Supergravity

We investigate the canonical quantization of supergravity N=1 in the case of a midisuperspace described by Gowdy $T^3$ cosmological models. The quantum constraints are analyzed and the wave function of the universe is derived explicitly. Unlike the minisuperspace case, we show the existence of physical states in midisuperspace models. The analysis of the wave function of the universe leads to the conclusion that the classical curvature singularity present in the evolution of Gowdy models is removed at the quantum level due to the presence of the Rarita-Schwinger field.
