MACEst: The reliable and trustworthy Model Agnostic Confidence Estimator

Reliable Confidence Estimates are hugely important for any machine learning model to be truly useful. In this paper, we argue that any confidence estimates based upon standard machine learning point prediction algorithms are fundamentally flawed and under situations with a large amount of epistemic uncertainty are likely to be untrustworthy. To address these issues, we present MACEst, a Model Agnostic Confidence Estimator, which provides reliable and trustworthy confidence estimates. The algorithm differs from current methods by estimating confidence independently as a local quantity which explicitly accounts for both aleatoric and epistemic uncertainty. This approach differs from standard calibration methods that use a global point prediction model as a starting point for the confidence estimate.

Kinetic description of charmonium production in high-energy nuclear collisions

We study the evolution of charmonia as they collide with the constituents of the fireball produced in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. The latter evolves in a manner controlled by the equation of state as given by lattice QCD, and is constructed in such a way that the observed hadronic spectra are correctly reproduced. A kinetic description of charmonium interactions with both quark-gluon and hadronic degrees of freedom allows to study in detail the evolution in different regimes, controlled by collision energy, kinematics and geometry. The data collected at the CERN-SPS accelerator are well described and new estimates for J/psi production at BNL-RHIC are presented.

Bound state kinetics in high-energy nuclear collisions

A Lorentz covariant kinetic equation for bound states and their constituents is presented and solved exactly in closed form. It describes in a unified way dynamical formation and dissociation of states such as quarkonia and (anti)-deuterons in the excited medium formed with a high-energy heavy-ion collision.

Fluctuations of the transverse energy in Pb+Pb collisions and J/psi suppression

The observed J/psi suppression in Pb+Pb collisions shows a drop at those large values of the transverse energy E_T which arise from fluctuations. The validity of existing models for J/psi suppression can be extended into this domain of E_T by introducing an ad hoc factor proportional to E_T. We propose a formalism in which the influence of E_T fluctuations on the J/psi suppression can be calculated and discuss the conditions under which the ad hoc factor is obtained.

Rapidity dependence of large-p_t hadron production at RHIC

We study the dependence of parton energy loss (quenching) on rapidity in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions at RHIC. This can provides invaluable information on the density of the medium, which should be more dilute going away from mid-rapidity, thereby reducing the effect of quenching. We predict a clear effect at moderate transverse momenta $\sim$ 3 GeV.

Color degrees of freedom in nuclear collisions and charmonium suppression

In high energy nuclear collisions, the Glauber model is commonly used to evaluate $J/ψ$ suppression due to inelastic interaction with colorless bound nucleons. This requires an effective value for the $J/ψ$-nucleon absorption cross section which is larger than theoretically expected. On the other hand, multiple nucleon-nucleon collisions mediated by color exchange interactions, excite their color degrees of freedom. We investigate the importance of this effect and conclude that the related corrections are important to explain the effective value extrapolated from experiment.

Excitation of Color Degrees of Freedom of Nuclear Matter and $J/ψ$ Suppression

In high energy nuclear collisions, the conventional Glauber model is commonly used to evaluate the contribution to $J/ψ$ suppression originating from the inelastic interaction with colorless bound nucleons. This requires an effective value for the $J/ψ$-nucleon absorption cross section which is larger than theoretically expected. On the other hand, multiple nucleon-nucleon collisions mediated by color exchange interactions, excite their color degrees of freedom. We investigate the importance of this effect and find that these excited states provide a larger cross section for $J/ψ$ absorption. We conclude that the related corrections are important to explain the effective value extrapolated from experiment.

A New Mechanism for J/psi Suppression in Nuclear Collisions

We present new results based on an improved version of the Glauber model, used to describe the nuclear absorption of J/psi in reactions between nuclei at high energy. The excitation of the colour degrees of freedom of nucleons, due to collisions mediated by one-gluon exchange, is taken into account. It is found that the proposed mechanism leads to larger nuclear absorption of J/psi than previously considered.

Reconstruction of the Proton Source in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

We describe a direct method to reconstruct the transverse proton source formed in a relativistic heavy ion collision, making use of experimentally measured proton and deuteron spectra and assuming that deuterons are formed via two-nucleon coalescence. We show that an ambiguity with respect to the source temperature still persists and we indicate a possible solution to the problem.
