PrecisionSM: an annotated database for low-energy $e^+e^-$ hadronic cross sections

PrecisionSM is an annotated database that compiles the available data on low-energy cross sections of electron-positron collisions into hadronic channels. This database organizes and collects data samples from $e^+e^-$ experiments, which are used as input for the data-driven theoretical evaluation of the muon anomalous magnetic moment, $a_{\mu}$, serving as a precise test of the Standard Model when compared to the experimental measurements of $a_{\mu}$. The database is accessible through a custom website (https://precision-sm.github.io) which contains details about the data samples, such as the treatment of radiative corrections, as well as links to papers on INSPIRE-HEP and to tables on HEPData. The PrecisionSM database was developed within a Joint Research Initiative in the group application of the European hadron physics community, STRONG2020, and is now incorporated into the RadioMonteCarLow2 Working Group (RMCL2 WG) activities, which have the more general goal of improving the theoretical description of scattering processes at $e^+e^-$ colliders. The results of Phase I of the new RMCL2 WG have been published in Aliberti et al, arXiv:hep-ph/2410.22882. In this proceeding, we will report on the status of the PrecisionSM database, which currently contains a list of the dominant $2\pi$ channel as well as $3\pi$ and $\pi^0\gamma$, and on the ongoing work for the other channels and for responsive plots.

Status of the Proton EDM Experiment (pEDM)

The Proton EDM Experiment (pEDM) is the first direct search for the proton electric dipole moment (EDM) with the aim of being the first experiment to probe the Standard Model (SM) prediction of any particle EDM. Phase-I of pEDM will achieve $10^{-29} e\cdot$cm, improving current indirect limits by four orders of magnitude. This will establish a new standard of precision in nucleon EDM searches and offer a unique sensitivity to better understand the Strong CP problem. The experiment is ideally positioned to explore physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), with sensitivity to axionic dark matter via the signal of an oscillating proton EDM and across a wide mass range of BSM models from $\mathcal{O}(1\text{GeV})$ to $\mathcal{O}(10^3\text{TeV})$. Utilizing the frozen-spin technique in a highly symmetric storage ring that leverages existing infrastructure at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), pEDM builds upon the technological foundation and experimental expertise of the highly successful Muon $g$$-$$2$ Experiments. With significant R\&D and prototyping already underway, pEDM is preparing a conceptual design report (CDR) to offer a cost-effective, high-impact path to discovering new sources of CP violation and advancing our understanding of fundamental physics. It will play a vital role in complementing the physics goals of the next-generation collider while simultaneously contributing to sustaining particle physics research and training early-career researchers during gaps between major collider operations.

Flavor Physics at the CEPC: a General Perspective

We discuss the landscape of flavor physics at the Circular Electron-Positron Collider (CEPC), based on the nominal luminosity outlined in its Technical Design Report. The CEPC is designed to operate in multiple modes to address a variety of tasks. At the $Z$ pole, the expected production of 4 Tera $Z$ bosons will provide unique and highly precise measurements of $Z$ boson couplings, while the substantial number of boosted heavy-flavored quarks and leptons produced in clean $Z$ decays will facilitate investigations into their flavor physics with unprecedented precision. We investigate the prospects of measuring various physics benchmarks and discuss their implications for particle theories and phenomenological models. Our studies indicate that, with its highlighted advantages and anticipated excellent detector performance, the CEPC can explore beauty and $\tau$ physics in ways that are superior to or complementary with the Belle II and Large-Hadron-Collider-beauty experiments, potentially enabling the detection of new physics at energy scales of 10 TeV and above. This potential also extends to the observation of yet-to-be-discovered rare and exotic processes, as well as testing fundamental principles such as lepton flavor universality, lepton and baryon number conservation, etc., making the CEPC a vibrant platform for flavor physics research. The $WW$ threshold scan, Higgs-factory operation and top-pair productions of the CEPC further enhance its merits in this regard, especially for measuring the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements, and Flavor-Changing-Neutral-Current physics of Higgs boson and top quarks. We outline the requirements for detector performance and considerations for future development to achieve the anticipated scientific goals.

Radiative corrections and Monte Carlo tools for low-energy hadronic cross sections in $e^+ e^-$ collisions

We present the results of Phase I of an ongoing review of Monte Carlo tools relevant for low-energy hadronic cross sections. This includes a detailed comparison of Monte Carlo codes for electron-positron scattering into a muon pair, pion pair, and electron pair, for scan and radiative-return experiments. After discussing the various approaches that are used and effects that are included, we show differential cross sections obtained with AfkQed, BabaYaga@NLO, KKMC, MCGPJ, McMule, Phokhara, and Sherpa, for scenarios that are inspired by experiments providing input for the dispersive evaluation of the hadronic vacuum polarisation.

The storage ring proton EDM experiment

We describe a proposal to search for an intrinsic electric dipole moment (EDM) of the proton with a sensitivity of \targetsens, based on the vertical rotation of the polarization of a stored proton beam. The New Physics reach is of order $10^~3$TeV mass scale. Observation of the proton EDM provides the best probe of CP-violation in the Higgs sector, at a level of sensitivity that may be inaccessible to electron-EDM experiments. The improvement in the sensitivity to $\theta_{QCD}$, a parameter crucial in axion and axion dark matter physics, is about three orders of magnitude.

Electric dipole moments and the search for new physics

Static electric dipole moments of nondegenerate systems probe mass scales for physics beyond the Standard Model well beyond those reached directly at high energy colliders. Discrimination between different physics models, however, requires complementary searches in atomic-molecular-and-optical, nuclear and particle physics. In this report, we discuss the current status and prospects in the near future for a compelling suite of such experiments, along with developments needed in the encompassing theoretical framework.

Measurement of the branching fractions of the decays $τ^- \to K^- nπ^0 ν_τ$ ($n = 0,1,2,3$) and $τ^- \to π^- nπ^0 ν_τ$ ($n = 3,4$) by BaBar

We report preliminary measurements of the branching fractions of the decays $τ\to K\, nπ^0\, ν$ ($n = 0,1,2,3$) and $τ\to π\, nπ^0\, ν$ ($n = 3,4$), excluding the contributions that proceed through the decay of intermediate $K^0$ and $η$ mesons. The measurements are based on a data sample of 435 million $τ$ pairs produced in $e^+e^-$ collisions at and near the $Υ(4S)$ peak and collected with the BaBar detector in 1999-2008. The measured branching fractions are $B(τ^- \to K^- ν_τ) = (7.174 \pm 0.033 \pm 0.213) \times 10^{-3}$, $B(τ^- \to K^- π^0 ν_τ) = (5.054 \pm 0.021 \pm 0.148) \times 10^{-3}$, $B(τ^- \to K^- 2π^0 ν_τ) = (6.151 \pm 0.117 \pm 0.338) \times 10^{-4}$, $B(τ^- \to K^- 3π^0 ν_τ) = (1.246 \pm 0.164 \pm 0.238) \times 10^{-4}$, $B(τ^- \to π^- 3π^0 ν_τ) = (1.168 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.038) \times 10^{-2}$, $B(τ^- \to π^- 4π^0 ν_τ) = (9.020 \pm 0.400 \pm 0.652) \times 10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one systematic.

HFLAV $\tau$ branching fractions fit and measurements of Vus with $\tau$ lepton data

We report the status of the Heavy Flavour Averaging Group (HFLAV) averages of the $\tau$ lepton measurements We then update the latest published HFLAV global fit of the $\tau$ lepton branching fractions (Spring 2017) with recent results by BABAR. We use the fit results to update the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element Vus measurements with the $\tau$ branching fractions. We combine the direct $\tau$ branching fraction measurements with indirect predictions using kaon branching fractions measurements to improve the determination of Vus using $\tau$ branching fractions. The Vus determinations based on the inclusive branching fraction of $\tau$ to strange final states are about $3\sigma$ lower than the Vus determination from the CKM matrix unitarity.

Status and progress of the HFLAV-Tau group activities

We report the status and progress of the Heavy Flavour Averaging Group work on the global fit of tau lepton branching fractions, on the lepton universality tests and on the measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vus| using tau lepton measurements. We also review the prospects for improving the precision of the |Vus| measurement.

Determination of |Vus| from the tau lepton branching fractions

We determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix (CKM) element |Vus| in several different ways using updated preliminary HFAG averages for the tau lepton branching fractions and we compare the results with the determinations obtained from the kaon decays and from the unitarity of the CKM matrix.

Predicting the tau strange branching ratios and implications for V_{us}

Hadronic tau decays provide several ways to extract the Cabbibo-Kobashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element V_{us}. The most precise determination involves using inclusive tau decays and requires as input the total branching ratio into strange final states. Recent results from B-factories have led to a discrepancy of about 3.4 sigma from the value of V_{us} implied by CKM unitarity and direct determination from Kaon semi-leptonic modes. In this paper we predict the three leading strange tau branching ratios, using dispersive parameterizations of the hadronic form factors and taking as experimental input the measured Kaon decay rates and the tau -> K pi nu_tau decay spectrum. We then use our results to reevaluate V_{us}, for which we find |V_{us}|=0.2207 \pm 0.0027, in better agreement with CKM unitarity.

Search for $D^0 \to \ell^+\ell^-$ and $D^0 \to γγ$ at BaBar and BESIII

Three searches for rare decays of the charmed $D^0$ meson are presented: a search for $D^0 \to \ell^+\ell^-$ published by the BaBar collaboration using about 468 fb$^{-1}$ of data and two searches for $D^0 \to γγ$, one published by the BaBar collaboration using about 470 fb$^{-1}$ of data, and a second one presented as a preliminary result by the BESIII collaboration using approximately 2.9 fb$^{-1}$. No statistically significant signal has been found, in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.

Status Report from Tau subgroup of the HFAG

The aim of Tau subgroup of the HFAG is to provide average values of the mass and branching fractions of the tau lepton. Using the branching fractions, we present tests of charged current lepton universality and obtain estimates for |Vus|. We also summarize the status of searches for lepton flavor violating decays of the tau lepton.
