Explicit Green's Functions and Adjoint Problems for Differential Equations with Linear Functional Perturbations

In this paper we study a functional differential equation subject to two-point boundary value conditions, where the functional dependence is introduced through an operator of the form \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=1}^{l}\gamma_{k}(t)\mathcal{C}_{k}(u), \end{equation*} where $\mathcal{C}_{k}:C(I) \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$, $k=1, \ldots l$, ($I:=[a,b]$) are linear continuous operators and $\gamma_{k} \in \mathcal{L}^{1}(I)$ for all $k=1, \ldots, l$. This formulation encompasses, among others, equations with piecewise constant arguments and those with integral-type dependence. We analyze this class of equations by deducing and characterizing their Green's function, as well as by computing the related adjoint problem. This approach enables us to establish connections among different types of functional equations and to relate equations with piecewise constant arguments to impulsive differential equations and non local boundary value problems. Next, we develop a series of comparison principles and results that allow us to characterize the regions where the Green's function of the original problem and of its adjoint maintain a constant sign. Finally, we illustrate the theoretical finding with representative examples.

Second order periodic boundary value problems with reflection and piecewise constant arguments

In this paper, we analyze a second-order differential equation with a piecewise constant argument and reflection coupled to periodic boundary conditions. Our main contribution is the construction of the related Green's function and a detailed analysis of its properties. In particular, we determine the region in which the Green's function has constant sign, depending on the parameters $m$ and $M$ on which it depends. In some cases, we are able to characterize these parameter values in terms of the first eigenvalue related to suitable Dirichlet problems. Building in these results, we apply the Krasnosel'skii method to establish the existence of solutions for different nonlinear problems, and prove the existence of a positive solution of a perturbed Schrodinger equation.

Reflection equation with piecewise constant argument

In this work, we study nonlocal differential equations with particular focus on those with reflection in their argument and piecewise constant dependence. The approach entails deriving the explicit expression of the solution to the linear problem by constructing the corresponding Green's function, as well as developing a novel formula to delineate the set of parameters involved in the analyzed equations for which the Green's function exhibits a constant sign. Furthermore, we demonstrate the existence of solutions for nonlinear problems through the utilisation of the monotone method. The aforementioned methodology is specifically applied to the linear problem with periodic conditions $v'(t) + mv(-t) + Mv([t]) = h(t)$ for $t \in [-T,T]$, proving several existence results for the associated nonlinear problem and precisely delimiting the region where the Green's function $H_{m,M}$ has a constant sign on its domain of definition. The equations studied have the potential to be applied in fields such as biomedicine or quantum mechanics. Furthermore, this work represents a significant advance, as it is, as far the authors know, the first time that equations with involution and piecewise constant arguments have been studied together.

Spectral characterization of the constant sign derivatives of Green's function related to two point boundary value conditions

In this paper we will study the set of parameters in which certain partial derivatives of the Green's function, related to a $n$-order linear operator $T_{n}[M]$, depending on a real parameter $M$, coupled to different two-point boundary conditions, are of constant sign. We will do it without using the explicit expression of the Green's function. The constant sign interval will be characterized by the first eigenvalue related to suitable boundary conditions of the studied operator. As a consequence of the main result, we will be able to give sufficient conditions to ensure that the derivatives of Green's function cannot be nonpositive (nonnegative). These characterizations and the obtained results can be used to deduce the existence of solutions of nonlinear problems under additional conditions on the nonlinear part. To illustrate the obtained results, some examples are given.

An explicit formula of the parameter dependence of de partial derivatives of the Green's functions related to arbitrary two-point boundary conditions

In this paper we obtain an explicit formula of the parameter dependence of the partial derivatives of the Green's functions related to two-point boundary conditions. Such expression follows as an integral of both kernels times the difference of the corresponding parameters of each Green's function. As a direct consequence, we deduce a simpler proof of the monotony of the constant sign of the partial derivative of a Green's function with respect to a real parameter. As a consequence, we improve the results obtained in \cite{C1}, where the monotone dependence was proved for the constant sign Green's function (not for any ot its partial derivatives) and under weaker assumptions on the Green's function. The arguments are valid for any other types of Ordinary Differential Equations coupled to Nonlocal Conditions. Moreover, analogous ideas could be developed for Partial and Fractional Differential Equations.

Green's Functions and Existence of Solutions of Nonlinear Fractional Implicit Difference Equations with Dirichlet Boundary Conditions

This article is devoted to deduce the expression of the Green's function related to a general constant coefficients fractional difference equation coupled to Dirichlet conditions. In this case, due to the points where some of the fractional operators is applied, we are in presence of a implicit fractional difference equation. Such property makes it more complicated to calculate and manage the expression of the Green's function. Such expression, on the contrary to the explicit case where it follows from finite sums, is deduced from series of infinity terms. Such expression will be deduced from the Laplace transform on the time scales of the integers. Finally, we prove two existence results for nonlinear problems, via suitable fixed point theorems.

Relationship of the Green's functions related to the Hill's equation coupled to different boundary value conditions

In this paper we will deduce several properties of the Green's functions related to the Hill's equation coupled to various boundary value conditions. In particular, the idea is to study the Green's functions of the second order differential operator coupled to Neumann, Dirichlet, Periodic and Mixed boundary conditions, by expressing the Green's function of a given problem as a linear combination of the Green's function of the other ones. This will allow us to compare different Green's functions when they have constant sign. Finally, such properties of the Green's function of the linear problem will be fundamental to deduce the existence of solutions to the nonlinear problem. The results are derived from the fixed point theory applied to related operators defined on suitable cones in Banach spaces.

Constant sign Green's function of a second order perturbed periodic problem

In this paper we are interested in obtaining the exact expression and the study of the constant sign of the Green's function related to a second order perturbed periodic problem coupled with integral boundary conditions at the extremes of the interval of definition. To obtain the expression of the Green's function related to this problem we use the theory presented in \cite{CLY} for general non-local perturbed boundary value problems. Moreover, we will characterize the parameter's set where such Green's function has constant sign. To this end, we need to consider first a related second order problem without integral boundary conditions, obtaining the properties of its Green's function and then using them to compute the sign of the one related to the main problem.

Green's function related to a n order linear differential equation coupled to arbitrary linear non local boundary conditions

In this paper we obtain the explicit expression of the Green's function related to a general $n$ order differential equation coupled to non-local linear boundary conditions. In such boundary conditions, a $n$ dimensional parameter dependence is also assumed. Moreover, some comparison principles are obtained. The explicit expression depends on the value of the Green's function related to the two-point homogeneous problem, that is, we are assuming that when all the parameters involved on the boundary conditions take the value zero then the problem has a unique solution which is characterized by the corresponding Green's function $g$. The expression of the Green's function $G$ of the general problem is given as a function of $g$ and the real parameters considered at the boundary conditions. It is important to show that, in order to ensure the uniqueness of solutions of the linear considered problem, we must assume a non resonant additional condition on the considered problem, which depends on the non local conditions and the corresponding parameters. We point out that the assumption of the uniqueness of solutions of the two-point homogeneous problem is not a necessary condition to ensure the solution of the general case. Of course, in this situation the expression we are looking for must be obtained in a different manner. To show the applicability of the obtained results, a particular example is given.

Nonlinear Differential Equations with Perturbed Dirichlet Integral Boundary Conditions

This paper is devoted to prove the existence of positive solutions of a second order differential equation with a nonhomogeneous Dirichlet conditions given by a parameter dependence integral. The studied problem is a nonlocal perturbation of the Dirichlet conditions by considering a homogeneous Dirichlet-type condition at one extreme of the interval and an integral operator on the other one. We obtain the expression of the Green's function related to the linear part of the equation and characterize its constant sign. Such property will be fundamental to deduce the existence of solutions of the nonlinear problem. The results hold from fixed point theory applied to related operators defined on suitable cones.

Existence and uniqueness of positive solutions for nonlinear fractional mixed problems

This paper is devoted to study the existence and uniqueness of solutions of a one parameter family of nonlinear fractional differential equation with mixed boundary value conditions. Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative is considered. An exhaustive study of the sign of the related Green's function is done. Under suitable assumptions on the asymptotic behavior of the nonlinear part of the equation at zero and at infinity, and by application of the fixed theory of compact operators defined in suitable cones, it is proved the existence of at least one solution of the considered problem. Moreover it is developed the method of lower and upper solutions and it is deduced the existence of solutions by a combination of both techniques. In some particular situations, the Banach contraction principle is used to ensure the uniqueness of solutions.

Green's functions for even order boundary value problems

In this paper we will show several properties of the Green's functions related to various boundary value problems of arbitrary even order. In particular, we will write the expression of the Green's functions related to the general differential operator of order 2n coupled to Neumann, Dirichlet and mixed boundary conditions, as a linear combination of the Green's functions corresponding to periodic conditions on a different interval. This will allow us to ensure the constant sign of various Green's functions and to deduce spectral results.

An Alternative Explicit Expression of the Kernel of the One Dimensional Heat Equation with Dirichlet Conditions

This paper is devoted to the study of the one dimensional non homogeneous heat equation coupled to Dirichlet Boundary Conditions. We obtain the explicit expression of the solution of the linear equation by means of a direct integral in an unbounded domain. The main novelty of this expression relies in the fact that the solution is not given as a series of infinity terms. On our expression the solution is given as a sum of two integrals with a finite number of terms on the kernel. The main novelty is that, on the contrary to the classical method, where the solutions are derived by a direct application of the separation of variables method, on the basis of the spectral theory and the Fourier Series expansion, the solution is obtained by means of the application of the Laplace Transform with respect to the time variable. As a consequence, for any $t \ge 0$ fixed, we must solve an Ordinary Differential Equation on the spatial variable, coupled to Dirichlet Boundary conditions. The solution of such a problem is given by the construction of the related Green's function.

On Linear Differential Equations and Systems with Reflection

In this paper we develop a theory of linear differential systems analogous to the classical one for ODEs, including the obtaining of fundamental matrices, the development of a variation of parameters formula and the expression of the Green's functions. We also derive interesting results in the case of differential equations with reflection and generalize the Hyperbolic Phasor Addition Formula to the case of matrices.

Solutions of the first order linear equation with reflection and general linear conditions

This work is devoted to the study of first order linear problems with involution and general linear conditions. We first study the problem in the case of antiperiodic boundary conditions, giving an explicit Green's function for it. Then we move forward to more general linear boundary conditions, focusing on sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness of solution. At the end of the paper we give estimates that ensure the positivity of the solution in the general problems and illustrate these applications with examples.

Solutions and Green's function of the first order linear equation with reflection and initial conditions

This work is devoted to the study of the existence and sign of Green's functions for first order linear problems with constant coefficients and initial (one point) conditions. We first prove a result on the existence of solutions of $n$-th order linear equations with involutions via some auxiliary functions to later prove a uniqueness result in the first order case. We study then different situations for which a Green's function can be obtained explicitly and derive several results in order to obtain information about the sign of the Green's function. Once the sign is known, optimal maximum and anti-maximum principles follow.

Existence results for a linear equation with reflection, non-constant coefficient and periodic boundary conditions

This work is devoted to the study of first order linear problems with involution and periodic boundary value conditions. We first prove a correspondence between a large set of such problems with different involutions to later focus our attention to the case of the reflection. We study then different cases for which a Green's function can be obtained explicitly and derive several results in order to obtain information about its sign. Once the sign is known, maximum and anti-maximum principles follow. We end this work with more general existence and uniqueness of solution results.
